West Indies still hold whip

The third Cable & Wireless Test went through a succession of contortions on the third day yesterday but it would have taken the elasticity of an Indian yoga master to have turned it on its head

Tony Cozier05-May-2002The third Cable & Wireless Test went through a succession of contortions on the third day yesterday but it would have taken the elasticity of an Indian yoga master to have turned it on its head. For all the sudden twists and turns, the West Indies remained as strongly placed as when they routed India for 102 on the opening day. They extended their lead to 292 before lunch after captain Carl Hooper and Shivnarine Chanderpaul duly completed their second centuries and their second double-century stand of the series and in spite of the customary collapse of their tailend, the last six wickets falling for 18.Inevitably, they had to contend with more tenacious resistance from the Indian batsmen on an ideal pitch than in the feeble first innings. But they recovered their composure after a chaotic second session to remove the top four in the Indian order for 169 by close, called seven overs before schedule, just past 6 p.m.It left India, with a tail as negligible as their own, still 123 short of avoiding another heavy defeat at Kensington Oval where they have been beaten in six of their previous seven Tests.Rahul Dravid and Sachin Tendulkar, the two whose records place them in the elevated company of modern batsmen with averages above 50, have already gone cheaply. And India’s chances of protecting their 1-0 lead in the series now lies with the last of their specialist batsmen, captain Saurav Ganguly and V.V.S.Laxman.They spent the last 23 overs of the day together in a partnership of 51 and resume this morning. But had Ramnaresh Sarwan been able to cling on to sharp chances at short-leg before either had scored neither as difficult as one he held earlier in the same position and had Laxman’s edged catch to the ‘keeper off Pedro Collins at 15 not been negated by a no-ball, the match might well have been over already.India’s slim hopes of getting back into contention flickered more than once as they summarily despatched Ridley Jacobs and the four fast bowlers after removing Hooper for 115 and followed with their best opening partnership for the series of 80 between Shiv Sunder Das and Wasim Jaffer. The three-quarters of an hour in which the West Indies’ first innings folded and the two hours of the second session provided an anxious period for the home team that again raised doubts over whether they have the resources and resolve to make the most of an advantage, even one as overwhelming as this. The diminutive Das, shell-shocked after his several failures on tour, was alarmingly dropped off Dillon’s chest-high lifter by Stuart Williams, low down at fourth slip, when three. While Cameron Cuffy kept the pressure on with maiden after maiden his figures at close, 18-15-3-0, were scarcely believable Collins especially fed Jaffer’s obvious strength off the backfoot through the off-side.The slim right-hander kept peppering the boundary between point and extra-cover and, even when he slapped a Collins long-hop low to the swooping Sarwan at extra-cover, third umpire Billy Doctrove wasn’t persuaded by the television replays that the catch had carried.Jaffer was then 35 and it took Das’ misplaced optimism over a single to cover and Chanderpaul’s swift pick-up and direct underarm hit to end his innings with a run out.India were 85 for one at tea but the West Indies clearly regrouped during the interval. The remarkable Cuffy, the aggressive Dillon and the more accurate Collins pinned down Das and Dravid to such an extent on resumption that they could only eek out 16 from 13 overs. The pressure duly told.Das’ dismissal might have been freakish but Dravid and Tendulkar were victims of the new West Indian intensity. In the second over of a new spell, Adam Sanford drew a drive at a wide ball from Dravid and Jacobs lunged to his right to gather a difficult catch.Right away, Ganguly stabbed his second ball into and out of Sarwan’s grasp but the miss was quickly forgotten in the cacophony from 10 000 voices that greeted another cheap Tendulkar dismissal.Defending on the back foot against Dillon, he was taken on the pad and not even the Mormon Tabernacle Choir could have matched the decibels when umpire Ashoka deSilva nodded his head and raised his finger on the appeal.Tendulkar has now had scores of nought, nought and eight in his last three innings. It was to be the last West Indian success for the day but their stranglehold had been scarcely eased. It was loosened briefly after Hooper was out an hour and a half into the day.The skipper, 70 at the start, finally fell to a skied off-side catch from off-spinner Harbhajan Singh for 115, while the left-handed Chanderpaul was unbeaten 101 before Jacobs and the bowlers capitulated in familiar fashion. It was a continuation of the prolific form the two Guyanese brought into the series with a stand of 293 in the drawn first Test in Georgetown when Hooper compiled 233 and Chanderpaul 140, the highest Test scores for each. Now they recorded their second hundreds in a series for the first time, Hooper also passing 400 in a series for another first.Hooper had overcome an uncertain start and a lucky break from the third umpire on a television replay for run out at 15 the previous day. Since then, not much missed the middle of the bat.He proceeded to his 12th Test hundred with three rasping off-side boundaries in the same over off the left-arm swing bowler Asish Nehra whose inconsistency was punished by both batsman.Chanderpaul was 91 when Hooper’s innings of five-and-three-quarter hours was ended as his attempt for a 19th four skewed off the leading edge.Recent experience would have alerted him to the necessity of gathering the nine runs needed for his fourth Test hundred as quickly as he could. The last six West Indian wickets in the series had contributed 38, 65 and 51 and he just managed to get to his landmark before his partners deserted him.Jacobs continued the batting woes of wicket-keepers in the series by edging his fourth ball to the keeper off Nehra, who soon bounced out Dillon.Harbhajan, otherwise ineffective on the true pitch, then removed Pedro Collins and No.10 Adam Sanford with successive balls.Cuffy denied him his second Test hat-trick by edging a single past slip, but he promptly and comically ran himself out at the non-striker’s end, scampering for a run that Chanderpaul refused and then stumbling as Harbhajan broke the stumps. On the ground where he recorded his first Test hundred in the corresponding Test against India five years ago, Chanderpaul’s innings of six hours, 10 minutes were chanceless and authoritative. The West Indies won then in a tight finish. They should so do again with much more comfort.

Villa could sign a new Dublin in Tammy Abraham

Aston Villa boss Dean Smith could sign the club’s new Dion Dublin in Chelsea striker Tammy Abraham.

What’s the story?

Reports in recent weeks have linked Dean Smith’s side with a move for the £50k-a-week earning striker in this upcoming summer transfer window, and there has now been an update on the club’s pursuit.

According to Football Insider, while Abraham is on the list of striking targets the club has, Smith is not actually fully convinced by the England international.

The report adds that “the manager does not regard Abraham as a top-quality finisher”, while the £40m Chelsea are apparently demanding is also said to be likely out of reach for Villa.

Shades of Dublin

Standing at an imposing 6 foot 3, Abraham is an inch taller than Dublin, and just like the former Villa striker, is a real “handful” up front.

In fact, speaking after he watched him score against Swansea back in the Championship, Smith himself said: “Tammy is a handful and he knows better than me that he should have been walking away with the match ball tonight. But he scored the winning goal, he’s a hell of a talent. Tammy put in a hell of a shift up front on his own and proved he is a fine player.”

Called the “real deal” by another former Villa boss in Tim Sherwood, Abraham’s previous experience in working with Smith would likely see him hit the ground running at Villa Park, and he could bring the kind of physicality and power that Dublin brought to the table.

As per Sofascore, he is very much someone who does his best work in the penalty area given his heat-map, while he won an impressive 56% of his duels in the air last season in the Premier League – to put that in context, another Villa former player, Christian Benteke who’s renowned for his heading, only won marginally more with 57%.

Villa fans still have fond memories of Dublin’s time at the club, and they could see real shades of the now 52-year-old in Abraham.

Meanwhile, Villa could land a bargain Buendia alternative in this “special” star…

BankWest and WACA declare mutual end to partnership

The Western Australian Cricket Association (WACA) and BankWest have mutually agreed that the 15-year-sponsorship agreement between them will not be extended.

Western Australia Cricket Association20-May-2002The Western Australian Cricket Association (WACA) and BankWest have mutually agreed that the 15-year-sponsorship agreement between them will not be extended.BankWest became associated with the WACA in 1987 as part of an arrangement to provide funding for the redevelopment of the WACA Ground and long-term sponsorship, including naming rights sponsorship of the BankWest Lillee Marsh Stand. BankWest subsequently became naming rights sponsor of the WACA’s Sunday League limited overs competition called the BankWest Cup.BankWest Group Managing Director Terry Budge said that during the 15-year sponsorship, BankWest had contributed nearly $3 million to support and develop West Australian cricket.”It has been a rewarding relationship and I’d like to think it has contributed to the success of our teams and players and the underlying strength of cricket in this State”, Mr Budge said.WACA President Brian Rakich acknowledged BankWest s contribution to WA cricket.”The WACA is sad to see BankWest go and would like to thank them for their support of WA Cricket during the past 15 years”, Mr Rakich said.”The initial sponsorship was vital to the WACA at a time of the major redevelopment of the Ground which brought night cricket to Western Australia and facilitated the entry of the West Coast Eagles into the national competition.”BankWest provided the commercial funding facility which enabled the WACA to fund the redevelopment. They have been an important partner for the WACA over these past 15 years.”I’d also like to say thank-you to BankWest on behalf of the tens of thousands of West Australians who have benefited from BankWest’s support of our great sport during that time”

Celtic urged to appoint Michael O’Neill

Celtic’s pursuit of Eddie Howe turned into something of a farce.

After the Bhoys initiated advanced talks with the Englishman, it was all on the backroom staff he wanted to bring with him to Parkhead.

However, with a deal looking so close to completion, it collapsed with Celtic forced to look elsewhere.

What’s the word?

Celtic have moved swiftly on an alternative with Australian coach Ange Postecoglou being targeted instead.

He’s reportedly in advanced negotiations with the Hoops but the board are still being urged to consider other options.

Speaking to Sportsound (via Glasgow Times), Pat Bonner declared that they should be aiming to hire someone with experience of the British game.

He said: “I’m looking down the list of people that are there. Maybe Michael O’Neill? I would take him.

“I would go for those guys that know the British game, know the Scottish game as well as the European game.

“He’s somebody that’s in Australia and in Japan. He is in a different environment, different place. Without being disrespectful, when you are in that environment you do not think about European football too much, unless dealing with agents.”

A good alternative

If you were to write down a list of managers then you’d be well placed to expect a fair few of them to have been linked with the Celtic job.

Their hunt for a new head coach has been going on for as long as three months now when Neil Lennon resigned back in February.

If the board did want to go for someone with experience of the British game there’d be few better choices than O’Neill for what the club needs.

Trevor Sinclair touted him for the Bhoys earlier this season, commenting: “I would look at Michael O’Neill. He’s done a fantastic job with the Northern Ireland national team, he’s done a superb job with Stoke City.”

The 51-year-old has done a very credible job with the Potters, taking them from near relegation in England’s second-tier to a spot just outside the play-offs.

When he first walked through the door, they were sat rock bottom of the Championship but he steered them to a 15th placed finish last term. Stoke then ended the current campaign in 14th; a slight improvement.

O’Neill was also excellent with Northern Ireland. He took them from a nation ranked as low as 129th in FIFA’s World Rankings to a team that made the last 16 of the last European Championships.

When your team is in a crisis, O’Neill seems well placed to be effective. Celtic aren’t quite battling relegation but after a trophyless campaign, they need someone who is able to come in and steady the ship.

AND in other news, “Unbelievable” 49 y/o wants to rival Postecoglou for Celtic job, fans must be buzzing…

Pirlo could unlock Andre Gomes at Everton

It has been suggested recently that Andrea Pirlo is on Everton’s shortlist to replace Carlo Ancelotti at Goodison Park this summer, and if the 42-year-old were to get the job, he could be the man to unlock Andre Gomes in this Toffees side.

According to Calciomercato, Pirlo is one of the names being considered to step up as Ancelotti’s replacement after the 61-year-old returned to Real Madrid this week, with the former looking likely to make a swift return to management after being sacked by Juventus recently.

During his playing days, Pirlo was renowned as an incredible passer of the ball who was extremely composed in possession and could dictate games with apparent ease.

He favoured a possession style of play during his time with Juventus, as only Sassuolo averaged more possession per game than the Old Lady in Serie A last season, which suggests that he would deploy a similar tactic with the Toffees.

This could lead to Gomes having a resurgence of form, with the former Barcelona midfielder having struggled for consistent form during his time at Goodison Park, with his 6.46 average rating from WhoScored last season ranking him as the 18th-best performer in the Toffees’ squad.

However, his passing success rate of 85.3% was the fourth-best of any Everton player with at least 10 appearances in the Premier League last season, which emphasises that he is one of their more talented players on the ball.

Gomes seems to lack the energy to push forward from midfield and contribute in attack, so if he were redeployed by the 42-year-old in ‘the Pirlo role’ as a deep-lying playmaker, he could then become a lot more effective in this Everton side.

Whilst the horrific ankle injury the Portuguese midfielder suffered in 2019 has largely scuppered his form, he has shown glimpses of his ability, with former Toffees goalkeeper Nigel Martyn full of praise for his performance against Leeds last season, saying: “He’s a very composed footballer, looks very good on the ball, intelligent and knows which space to run into. His passing’s very good, his tackling’s very good – he’s a great all-round footballer.”

Ancelotti was also complimentary of the midfielder’s performance that night, saying: “In my opinion, the best player on the pitch was André Gomes…technically, physically, tactically. This is the real André Gomes, the one we need.”

Therefore, with Pirlo’s guidance, the £18m-rated Gomes could start producing these performances on a much more regular basis for Everton, which could see him re-establish himself as a key player at Goodison Park next season if the 42-year-old gets the manager’s job.

Everton manager update on Pellegrini

Everton have reportedly contacted Manuel Pellegrini about potentially becoming their new manager.

The Lowdown: Everton still searching

The Goodison Park faithful are still searching for a coach to replace Carlo Ancelotti, who has left the Merseyside club to go and manage Real Madrid.

As per the Daily Mail, Nuno Espirito Santo is still the overwhelming favourite to take charge, but Rafa Benitez, Christophe Galtier, Graham Potter and Roberto Martinez have also been named as potential successors to Ancelotti.

The Latest: Everton eye Pellegrini

According to the Daily Mail, Pellegrini has emerged as another potential target for the Toffees, and has been contacted by intermediaries over the vacant manager’s job.

The news outlet also recalls that Farhad Moshiri spoke to him back in 2016 when he was looking for a replacement for Martinez, who is now the boss of the Belgium national team and will be taking charge of them in Euro 2020.

The Verdict: Pellegrini a good option

Pellegrini is certainly a good option for the Blues, having already shown his credentials in the Premier League by winning the title with Manchester City back in the 2013/14 season.

More recently, the Chilean has done very well with Real Betis, guiding them to a sixth-placed finish in La Liga and thus gaining a UEFA Europa League spot.

At 67 years of age, having also managed the likes of Real Madrid and West Ham United, Pellegrini is clearly very experienced, and so would emulate Ancelotti in this sense.

However, there are other good candidates, and so EFC should not rush into such a decision just yet, with plenty of younger and fresher options perhaps more enticing.

Barbados Cricket Association records operating loss

For the second straight year, the Barbados Cricket Association (BCA) has recorded an operating loss of close to half-million dollars

19-Jul-2002For the second straight year, the Barbados Cricket Association (BCA) has recorded an operating loss of close to half-million dollars. And the deficit has come in spite of more than $300 000 in revenue from its newly-introduced lottery.Draft financial statements obtained by the WEEKEND NATION revealed the BCA incurred a loss of $456 098 for the fiscal year ending March 31, 2002.This follows a shortfall of $657 344 the previous year when the BCA recorded its biggest loss in more than a decade.Additionally, the BCA’s auditors say they have been "unable to confirm or verify by alternative means the amount of $248 498 included in the balance of $1 161 164 due from the West Indies Cricket Board (WICB)."Accordingly, we were not able to determine whether any adjustments might be necessary to the balance from the WICB revenue, excess expenditure for the year and accumulated funds."The financial statements, which are to be presented at the July 30 annual general meeting at Sherbourne Conference Centre, are certain to be debated vigorously among members of the largest and most respected sporting association in the island.During the year under review, the BCA did not increase its revenue, the figure dropping from $2 324 744 to $2 309 382.The lottery, which started in mid-February, brought in $333 333 and advertising returns went up by close to $50 000, but revenue from sponsorship, rental of boxes and subscriptions all declined by substantial amounts.Another area where revenue decreased was from the share of gate receipts from international matches during the 2000 home season. The BCA’s share from WICB was $30 063 compared with $114 157 the previous year. The BCA managed to decrease its expenditure by $216 608, but it is significant to note it spent $237 685 in legal and professional fees.

Leeds United: Whites linked with move for Leo Hjelde

Leeds United are interested in a move for Celtic wonderkid Leo Hjelde, as reported by the Yorkshire Evening Post.

The Lowdown: Leeds United prepare for 2021/22

Acquiring some established first-team players may well be on the agenda at Leeds this summer, but bringing in young talent and allowing them a platform to flourish will be equally important to transfer guru Victor Orta and co.

A healthy streamline of quality young talent from the academy could prove very fruitful under a coach like Marcelo Bielsa, and this train of thought may be particularly applicable to Leeds United’s latest documented pursuit.

The Latest: Leeds interested in Hjelde; could join Under-23 set up

Leeds United have supposedly earmarked Celtic defender Hjelde as an ideal fit for their Under-23 set up [Yorkshire Evening Post].

Oliver Casey looks set to finalise a permanent move to Blackpool [OneFootball], while the Norwegian youth international could be one of three or four younger domestic signings that the Yorkshiremen are looking to tempt towards Elland Road [Yorkshire Evening Post].

Southampton are said to also have had a previous interest in the former Rosenborg BK man [HITC].

The Verdict: Hjelde would be an exciting acquisition

Undoubtedly, 17 year-old Hjelde would be a smart addition that would please Leeds United supporters.

Full of potential and promise, he made 12 appearances on loan at Ross County in the second half of 2020/21, registering a solitary goal [Transfermarkt], and was famously tipped as ‘the next Van Dijk’ by then Staggies manager John Hughes, illustrating his abundance of talent as a footballer [BBC].

Under the correct management, there is every chance the prodigy could develop into an established Premier League defender in the coming years if that comparison is even close to accurate, so signing him now for a relatively low fee – he has just one year left on his Celtic contract – could be a really wise move from Orta.

In other news, Leeds United have been offered the chance to sign a Ivory Coast international.

Thorpe still keen to tour Australia

Graham Thorpe has indicated that he still wants to be considered for England’s tour of Australia

Stephen Lamb31-Aug-2002Graham Thorpe has indicated that he still wants to be considered for England’s tour of Australia. Thorpe, who has taken a complete break from cricket since the Lord’s Test against India five weeks ago, has asked for more time before committing himself to the trip.Thorpe told the Daily Telegraph: “I’ve not really spoken to anyone on a regular basis since Lord’s, so I want to see what kind of vibes I’m getting from the selectors.”I’m well aware that I haven’t played for a month, so I’m not looking forassurances. But I don’t want to muck them around either and would like to know where I stand.”The England captain, Nasser Hussain, today confirmed that he has had discussions with Thorpe about the issue this week.”We spoke in messages for about three days and I spoke to him at length for the last couple of days,” Hussain explained.”He has said to me he would like to go to Australia, but there are still problems he has to sort out and Graham has to convince himself and the selectors that he can get through.”My hunch is that only Graham knows. Then the selectors have to decide if he is right mentally to get through the whole thing.”Thorpe returned home early from England’s tour of India last winter. With the Ashes squad due to be announced on September 10, there is little time left to discuss the Surrey batsman’s possible inclusion.
