Pakistan have to raise game in Nairobi

The ICC was meant to be a regulatory body, the game’s supremo

Omar Kureishi28-Aug-2002The ICC was meant to be a regulatory body, the game’s supremo. It was never intended that it should itself go into marketing. It is, as if, a civil aviation authority decides to float its own commercial airline. It was bad enough that the ICC should have set up a private detective agency by way of an Anti-Corruption Unit to combat match-fixing, a vote of no-confidence in the police of the respective cricket playing nations, will it be long before the ICC goes into the business of manufacturing cricket equipment?I recall, with some horror, ICC’s plans to take cricket to Disneyland. Mr Jagmohan Dalmiya was then at the helm of the ICC and there was much talk of the globalization of the game. Globalization was not then the ‘dirty’ word it has now become. The world may have become a global-village but the heads of the village are the same, old multinationals and the villagers themselves the cheap-labour work-force.It is necessary to provide this background so that the contract row can be put into perspective. However, it is resolved, one fact has emerged that the cricket world is a shadowy one and the cricket boards have been less than open with the players. The contracts that they have been asked to sign and which affect their livelihood were sprung on the players and there was an innuendo of coercion. When the cricket boards signed on board the merchant-ship of the ICC, were they unaware that many of the players would be affected by the ‘ambush’ marketing clause? It is no secret that the players have sponsors of their own and, of all persons, Mr Dalmiya who now heads the BCCI, should have known this and being a businessman, should have seen that there would have been a conflict of interest in the ICC contracts. Good management is about preventing fires and not about putting them out when they have started.Sunil Gavaskar said on ESPN that the main problem was that the Indian players did not have an Association and in his loud-thinking recommended that the subcontinent players should get together and form a collective-bargaining association. This is all very well but in the impasse created by the Indian government in not allowing the Indian team to play against Pakistan, the Indian players have remained silent. Not a word of support for the Pakistan players who have been financially affected because there is no cricket between the two countries. On the contrary, people like Kapil Dev have been at the forefront of backing the Indian government’s boycott of cricket with Pakistan nor have they said a word about the refusal of countries like Australia to tour Pakistan. All this has seriously hurt the finances of the PCB and is bound to affect the earnings of the Pakistan players. Some show of solidarity with Pakistan cricket would have been welcome. But this is a different matter but it does create road-blocks in finding a common cause. But it is a matter of principle and I have backed the players in the present row. There is one aspect that I find intriguing. There seems to be some resentment in our psyche that cricket stars should be making so much money, as if, by doing so they are defiling the game and are being unpatriotic in the bargain. We don’t seem to resent lawyers and doctors and accountants making money. Somehow, we feel that because cricketers represent the country that should be honour enough. In our heart of hearts, we have not accepted that cricket is a profession. When the question of paying Test cricketers match fees first came up in Pakistan, this was many many years ago, the then Pakistan cricket board was headed by a civil servant and in a column I had asked him whether as a civil servant he drew a salary? If Sachin Tendulkar has become a very rich man, it is because he has cashed in on his talent, he hasn’t robbed a bank or received back-handers for awarding government contracts. While making money, Tendulkar gives the cricket public a great deal of joy. I know of many who make fortunes but give no joy at all to anybody except themselves. The cricket boards should back their players against the ICC’s bid to go into business for itself. The ICC contract is bad in law and is a violation of the right of players to earn a living. The ICC is not a business concern. The Australians have named a full strength team for the Test series against Pakistan to be played at, not one, but two neutral venues, Colombo and Sharjah. The Waugh brothers are included and Steve Waugh retains the captaincy. On paper, it is a terrific side and it should be a very good series.Obviously, we are disappointed that the home series will be played away from home and we will have to watch it on television. One way of compensating the cricket public in Pakistan is for Pakistan to win the series. But in order to do so, Pakistan will have to match Australia in mental toughness. The Australians play their cricket hard and they play to win. But before Pakistan takes on Australia in a Test series, there is the triangular in Nairobi and Pakistan will be up against Australia. All one can say is that Pakistan will have to raise their game several notches. The way that Pakistan played at Morocco will not do. Pakistan will be strengthened by the return of Shoaib Akhtar but it was not Pakistan’s bowling that was wanting in Morocco. It was the batting and the key, one feels, will be Inzamam-ul-Haq. It is important that big man runs into form. And one hopes that this time Saeed Anwar will not be dropped to make way for Shoaib Malik. The Australians will not allow Imran Nazir the freedom he needs and he will have to devise means to break free. It will be a supreme Test for him, a choice between abandon and a more circumspect shot selection. No one questions his talent.

Interest intensifies over Brennan Johnson

Interest is growing in Nottingham Forest attacking midfielder Brennan Johnson this summer.

What’s the talk?

That’s according to a report by The Athletic, who claim that a host of clubs, including Brentford, Barnsley, Leeds United and Leicester City, have shown interest in the 20-year-old ahead of a potential move in the summer transfer window.

The Athletic have previously reported that Chris Hughton’s side would demand a fee of around £10m in order to part with the Wales international, with Johnson having signed a new contract at the club back in 2019, a deal that is believed to still have two years left to run.

Hughton must not sell

Considering just how badly Forest struggled to find the back of the net last season, integrating the attacking midfielder who thrived while on loan at Lincoln City last term into the Forest side next year would certainly appear to go a long way to addressing these goalscoring issues.

Indeed, over his 43 League One appearances for Michael Appleton’s side last term, the 20-year-old scored 11 goals, registered 13 assists and created four big chances for his teammates, as well as taking an average of 2.3 shots and making 0.7 key passes per game.

These metrics saw the £2.5k-per-week youngster earn a seasonal SofaScore match rating of 6.98, ranking him as Lincoln’s sixth-best performer in the third tier of English football, playing a huge role in seeing the Imps reach the League One play-off final.

Johnson also impressed in the domestic cup competitions, scoring a further two goals and providing one assist over his five appearances in the FA Cup and EFL Trophy, taking his haul for the season to a highly impressive 13 goals and 14 assists in all competitions.

As such, regardless of whether or not Forest receive an offer of £10m for the man Sabri Lamouchi dubbed an “unbelievable” player this summer, Hughton should not even consider accepting a bid for the Welshman in the coming months, as Johnson could well prove to be the spark that fires the Garibaldi back towards the top end of the second tier table next time around.

SAFC fans love Patterson news

Sunderland fans are delighted by the news that Anthony Patterson has signed a new contract with the Stadium of Light outfit.

Last season was not what many will have expected or wanted for the Black Cats. They did pick up the EFL Trophy and looked as though they would earn promotion to the Championship from League One automatically at one point. However, a poor run of form saw them condemned to the play-offs, and they then lost in the semi-finals to Lincoln City.

For Lee Johnson and his team, there can be no mistakes next term – promotion is once again the prime objective. It seems the Black Cats are already putting together their preparations, with 21-year-old goalkeeper Patterson being given a contract to stay the the club (safc.com).

The news was shared on Twitter by the club’s official Twitter account, and it attracted plenty of attention from the supporters. They took to the social media platform to share their thoughts.

`Best chance ever'

We have come here to win and if we don’t win, we haven’t achieved our mission

Haydn Gill01-Sep-2002We have come here to win and if we don’t win, we haven’t achieved our mission.Hendy Springer isn’t mincing his words ahead of today’s Red Stripe Bowl final between title-starved Barbados and Jamaica. But winning will not be easy. Jamaica are very worthy opposition and I’ve got a lot of respect for them and I am sure they have a lot of respect for us, the Barbados coach added.Mindful of the fact that Barbados have not lifted a regional limited-overs Cup, Shield, Trophy, Bowl or whatever since 1988, Springer and his 14 players know that a drought of 14 years is too long for a nation which boasts of such a rich cricketing history. It will be an unprecedented 13th final for Barbados, who are seeking a fourth title, which is a huge difference to the 17 they hold in first-class championships. They return to Kaiser Sports Club on the scenic north coast of Jamaica, where they so narrowly failed to win the Bowl last year in a highly-competitive final against Guyana, with the knowledge that it is going to be no cake-walk in trying the overcome the fierce, unbeaten Jamaicans. But one man who feels that this is Barbados’ time is captain Courtney Browne. If we don’t win this year, I don’t know when we’ll win it again. That’s the honest truth. This is the best chance we’ve got of winning the Bowl.None of these Bajans would have been at Sabina Park when the Malcolm Marshall-led Barbados last won a regional limited-overs title in a heart-stopping final at Sabina Park nearly a decade-and-a-half ago.But those like Browne, Philo Wallace and Floyd Reifer would have been there when Barbados were emerging as runners-up in the 1992, 1994 and 1995. And all but Vasbert Drakes, Dwayne Smith, Antonio Mayers and the sidelined Wallace were at Kaiser last season when the final was lost to Guyana by six wickets and 19 balls.Having finally broken the 11-year, ten-match, non-winning streak against Guyana in Friday’s semifinal, Barbados must feel they are on their way to claiming another piece of elusive material.Everything is in place. The first thing that we had to do was get to the final and we are there. It’s just a matter of sticking to the team plan and coming out and working hard as a unit, Browne said. After such a monumental achievement against Carl Hooper’s men, Barbados are bound to be on top of the world but they will not allow themselves to become complacent against opponents who have been the only ones to beat them thus far in the competition.Jamaica beat us in the preliminaries, so I don’t think there will be any room for complacency, Springer said. We’ve just got to come, work really hard and go one step up from the performances and we should come out on top.It was a comment mirrored by Browne. You are playing in Jamaica against Jamaica and everybody is going to be backing Jamaica. There is no time for complacency, Browne said.Barbados are also almost certain to retain the same 11 in light of Dale Richards’ knee injury. Unquestionably the most devastating batting team in the competition, they have passed 280 four times, including that remarkable final-round preliminary match when their 287 for seven in 47 overs was still 20 short of Jamaica’s 308 for five in 50 overs. We are lucky in the respect that we have played against Jamaica before, Springer said. We’ve seen how they perform. We can look at the form sheet of the guys who are playing, whereas with Guyana we just had to look at the scores from a distance. With Jamaica, it may be a lot easier to plan for them, but the execution will be the important link.Jamaica have beaten everyone they have faced and three of their matches have even ended just after 3 p.m. with the semifinal win against Trinidad and Tobago also finishing well inside the distance. As they seek their first title since 1999, they can expect the support of a packed ground of about 6 000 fans. The Jamaicans will be very challenging, Browne said. They are a very young and energetic team. They have a good attitude towards the game. For us to beat Jamaica, our attitude has got to be right and spot on.

West Brom keen on signing Jack Hendry

West Brom are reportedly interested in making a move for centre-back Jack Hendry this summer, despite him only just moving clubs.

The Lowdown: Ismael looks to make his mark

The Baggies may have suffered relegation from the Premier League last season, but there is now some positivity in the air at The Hawthorns.

The appointment of Valerien Ismael as manager seems an exciting one and he will now be eyeing up new signings to take his team forward.

The Latest: Hendry linked with surprise move

According to The Daily Mail, West Brom are ‘showing an interest’ in snapping up Hendry, even though he only joined KV Oostende for £1.8m from Celtic earlier this week.

The Belgian club are thought to be happy to make an immediate profit on the Scotland international, demanding £5m for his services.

Ismael is keen to sign a ball-playing centre-back and Hendry could be that man, having made one appearance at Euro 2020 this summer and been a target for the new Baggies boss when he was in charge at Barnsley.

The Verdict: Could be a great signing

Hendry could be a great signing for West Brom, ticking so many of the boxes which Ismael may be looking for in a new signing.

He is a towering presence at 6 foot 4, winning an average of three aerial duels per game for Oostende in the Jupiler Pro League last season, while Alexander Blessin, his manager at the Belgian club, hailed him as a “natural leader” in defence.

He is also strong in possession, completing 85.1% of his passes last term, which suggests he could thrive in Ismael’s style of play if the manager is looking for ball-playing defenders.

In other news, some West Brom fans have been reacting to a fresh transfer rumour that has emerged. Read more here.

Rangers dealt Ozcan blow

A fresh twist has emerged about Rangers target Salih Ozcan, one which looks like it will end any chance of the player making a move to join Steven Gerrard at Ibrox this summer.

What’s the talk?

According to Kicker, as relayed by GGFN, Rangers target Salih Ozcan is poised to put pen to paper on a contract extension with Koln this week, ending speculation over his future. Koln manager Steffen Baumgart held talks with the midfielder and convinced him that remaining with the Bundesliga outfit was the best option for him, with a deal now in place to keep him at the club.

Earlier this month, Kicker reported that Rangers were interested in a swoop for the German. At the time, Ozcan was prepared to see out of his contract and leave on a free transfer at the end of the month, as he was said to be keen to experience a new league. However, he now looks set to reject the chance to sign with the Scottish giants to stay put in Germany.

Gerrard will be gutted

Gerrard will be gutted by this fresh twist in the club’s pursuit of Ozcan. The 23-year-old signing a new contract with Koln seemingly puts an end to their chances of landing him in the current transfer window and they will now need to look elsewhere for targets. This is a shame because Ozcan could have been an excellent addition to the former Liverpool midfielder’s squad.

Ozcan has already racked up over 100 appearances in the Bundesliga and 2. Bundesliga during his short career to date, highlighting his experience at the top level. He has also dipped his toes into European football, with five starts in the Europa League for Koln in 2017 – suggesting that he could have been a useful player for Rangers in Europe next season.

However, it is worth mentioning that Ozcan did not enjoy a successful 2020/21 campaign for Koln. He started 15 games for the club in the Bundesliga, with a further 13 substitute appearances, and averaged a disappointing WhoScored rating of 6.28, but he has previously performed much better than he did last year.

The £3.15m-rated dynamo had found his rhythm the previous season with Holstein Kiel on loan, though. In 26 starts for the 2. Bundesliga outfit, Ozcan produced five goals and seven assists from central midfield and averaged an exceptional WhoScored rating of 7.08.

This shows that he is capable of putting in superb performances at a good standard, which is why Gerrard will be frustrated that he now looks set to miss out on a bargain deal for the midfielder.

AND in other news, Rangers handed boost over “fabulous” beast compared to Kante, Gerrard will be buzzing…

Rangers miss out on Rafael Santos Borre

Rangers have officially missed out on signing Rafael Santos Borre after Eintracht Frankfurt announced his signing, which is a blow for Steven Gerrard as he could’ve been a stellar addition to his squad at Ibrox.

The Bundesliga side announced his signing on a four-year deal from River Plate on a free transfer on Monday, which brings an end to Rangers’ reported hopes of bringing him in.

Would he have improved Gerrard’s squad?

Whilst Gerrard can boast a plethora of attacking talent in his squad for next season, the £15.3m-rated Santos Borre could have added some real Champions League quality ahead of Rangers’ return to Europe’s elite competition next season.

During his time at River Plate, the Colombia international would contribute an impressive 56 goals and 18 assists in 149 appearances, including eight goals in just 13 Copa de Liga appearances last season.

A player of Santos Borre’s quality would surely have found the net regularly with Rangers when you consider that they managed 92 goals in just 38 league appearances last season, so it is a shame for Gerrard that he is moving to Germany this summer.

Atletico Madrid manager Diego Simeone praised Borre’s development since his move to Argentina after struggling during his time in Spain, saying:

“The truth is that we have not talked about the issue of Borre. He is breaking it there in River, I am happy for him.

“He came very young (to Atletico) and the truth is that his growth has been tremendous – phenomenal.”

Could he have replaced Morelos?

Alfredo Morelos has been regularly linked with a move away from Ibrox in recent seasons, with Porto seemingly the main contenders to sign El Bufalo this summer.

[snack-amp-story url=”https://www.footballfancast.com/web-stories/read-the-latest-rangers-transfer-rumours-and-news” title=”Read the latest Rangers transfer rumours and news!”]

The 24-year-old has been superb for Rangers since joining the club from HJK Helsinki in 2017, contributing 94 goals and 43 assists in 194 appearances for the Teddy Bears in his four seasons at Ibrox.

He is also Rangers’ record goalscorer in Europe, which suggests that if he were to leave ahead of the 21/22 campaign, a proven goalscorer would have to be signed as his replacement if Gerrard’s side want to succeed in European competition.

[freshpress-quiz id=“593776″]

It is hard to ignore the similarities between Santos Borre and Morelos given that they are the same age and nationality, but if the Rangers star does depart this summer, Rangers will have to look elsewhere for a replacement for El Bufalo.

And, in other news… Rangers handed huge boost with Ibrox “warrior”, Gerrard surely delighted

Experience shows through in early stages of Christchurch club cricket

After four rounds of two-day games in the Christchurch senior men’s competition it is the experienced players who are once again coming to the fore

28-Nov-2002After four rounds of two-day games in the Christchurch senior men’s competition it is the experienced players who are once again coming to the fore.Generally speaking ball has dominated bat, which is the norm at this time of year when outfields are traditionally slow and pitches favouring the seam bowlers. There have, however, been a few exceptions to this rule, which is not surprising given the fact that TelstraClear Black Caps have had their most extended run playing club cricket for quite a number of years. With the bat, East Shirley’s Craig McMillan is the top two-day run scorer, amassing 222 runs at an average of 76. He also tops the averages. Shanan Stewart of Riccarton is the only other batsman to score over 200 runs. He has 202 at a 40.40 average.Other leading two-day run scorers include Michael Papps of East Shirley (188 runs at 47), Andy McDowell (188 at 37.60), Paul Wiseman of HSOB (180 at 45), Steven Knox of St Albans (166 at 27.67) and Gary Stead of Riccarton (147 at 73.50).With the ball, Stephen Cunis of St Albans tops the two-day aggregates with 22 wickets at 7.82. His team-mate Chris Harris is second on the list and also heads the averages with 20 wickets at a traditionally miserly 4.85 per wicket. Wade Cornelius of Lancaster Park/Woolston is close behind Cunis and Harris with 19 wickets at 9.37.Other leading players include: Chris Martin of St Albans (16 wickets at 11.63), Bobby Chilton of Marist (15 at 12.47), Ryan Burson of East Shirley (14 at 13.07) and Shane Bond of HSOB (12 at 8.37).With the gloves it is Aaron Johnstone of St Albans who leads the way. He has a total of 17 dismissals, made up of 15 catches and two stumpings. Carl Solomons of Lancaster Park/Woolston, who has moved to Christchurch from Blenheim, has 14 dismissals, all of which have been catches.
