Jacob Ramsey has proven his worth at Villa

Aston Villa have a number of fantastic young players and are well known for developing and nurturing young talent such as Jack Grealish, who the club sold for £100m to Manchester City in the summer.

Another young player could now be following in the footsteps of his midfield predecessor, as Jacob Ramsey continues to make an impressive mark on the first team under new manager Steven Gerrard.

According to Transfermarkt, the midfielder’s value has increased tenfold from this time last year, going from a market value of £1.35m in December 2020 to £13.5m now, which is an incredible leap for a player of his age and a testament to the progress he has made in 2021.

Gerrard has not been shy in praising the 20-year-old during his short time working with him at Villa Park, labelling him a “fantastic talent” in a press conference as he said: “He’s already a force. I think he’s a fantastic talent. At such a young age, you can see he plays with maturity, he’s got a really good game understanding and I think he’s further ahead than I was at 20.”

The former Rangers boss even predicted international call-ups for the youngster, adding to his aforementioned comments in the conference: “Without putting too much pressure on the kid – you can see him moving through the international age groups at speed – if he keeps consistency in his game, I think he can go all the way to the top.”

One of Ramsey’s most notable performances this season came against Norwich City a couple of weeks ago, when he scored a wonder goal to open the scoring at Carrow Road against former Villa boss Dean Smith’s relegation-battling Canaries.

According to SofaScore, the goal wasn’t the only outstanding contribution he made to the match, with an 86% pass accuracy and 70% duels won on the night.

Villa fans will surely be buzzing at the prospect of Ramsey playing and developing under Gerrard, who is on the exclusive Premier League Hall of Fame list for his incredible achievements during his 18 seasons in midfield for Liverpool. The youngster can gain invaluable coaching and knowledge in his position from his manager and improve even further over the course of 2022.

Wolves: Lage makes Neves admission

Bruno Lage is not shy when it comes to talking in depth about his plans for his players and his visions for the future of Wolves ever since he became the manager in the Summer of 2021, and in his most recent interview he makes his feelings clear on one particular player.

What’s the story?

In an interview with a Portuguese news outlet, the Wolves manager has made it very clear that Ruben Neves will remain a Wolves player as many clubs have been rumoured to register their interest with the midfielder.

In quotes obtained by The Mirror, Lage said;

“Ruben feels this is his second home – and happiness comes with that.

“That’s good, but it’s another thing to convince him to stay. It’s not about a contract or money. It’s about creating a big team that fights for different things.

“We want to push younger guys, like Ruben, to the next level.”

Both Manchester United and Arsenal have been linked to the 24-year-old, but it seems that Lage has set out to send a message to other clubs interested in securing the Wolves star’s signature with the comments in this interview, and clearly see’s a bright future in the current team for Neves.

Fans will be buzzing

Fans will be buzzing to hear the Wolves manager is keeping Neves firmly in his plans at the club, as the £36m-rated star has been involved in the Wolves journey to success, from the Championship all the way up to their current position in the top half of the Premier League table where they now compete for European football spots.

Neves joined the club back in 2017 when the club was in the Championship, competing for promotion, which saw them win the league impressively with 99 points on the board and 30 wins, in which Neves played a key part with 42 appearances, six goals and one assist.

The following season, Wolves qualified for the Europa League in their first campaign back in the Premier League, again with Neves being influential in creativity from his midfield position providing four goals and bagging three assists for the side.

Overall, the midfielder has cemented himself as a fan favourite in the team with 194 appearances, 21 goals and 11 assists in his career at the club, being part of all the highs and lows Wolves have faced over the last four years and at just 24 years old it is clearly important to Lage that he remains with the club to continue their journey.

Considering his importance to Lage’s side and indeed his influence at Molineux, fans will no doubt be delighted that his future could still be in the Midlands.

Warne backs Clarke as Twenty20 captain

Shane Warne has thrown his support behind Michael Clarke as captain of Australia’s Twenty20 team despite Clarke’s own struggles with the bat

Cricinfo staff13-May-2010Shane Warne has thrown his support behind Michael Clarke as captain of Australia’s Twenty20 team despite Clarke’s own struggles with the bat. Warne believes Clarke’s record as the leader of the side – in 13 games he has never led his side to defeat – is ample justification for him being in the starting line-up.As a batsman, Clarke has battled to adjust to the tempo of the shortest format and is averaging 12 at the World Twenty20. However, he has captained an unbeaten Australia into the semi-finals after they bowed out in the first round last year, and Warne was impressed with Clarke’s leadership.”At the moment he is captain of the Twenty20 side and he is doing a bloody good job,” Warne told AAP. “I think they are playing a good brand of cricket. I think what you are seeing is him maturing – he is becoming a good leader and good player.”Clarke has been praised for his attacking captaincy in the Caribbean, where he has backed his aggressive fast men and the legspinner Steven Smith, giving them fields that target wickets and not just containment. The former captain Steve Waugh said Clarke fully deserved his place in the side.”Form’s temporary, class is permanent,” Waugh said in the . “He’s a good enough player to adapt to that form of the game. I don’t see that as a big issue right now. A lot of people are saying he needs to up the ante but if he’s encouraging players around him and getting the best out of them that’s great for the team. He scores quick enough in my mind to be successful at T20.”Of the 40 leading run scorers in Twenty20 internationals, Clarke has the lowest strike-rate of 102.07 and he has also comfortably struck the fewest boundaries among that group. However, none of the leading captains in Twenty20 internationals come close to his winning ratio of 95.83%.

Rust-free England target improvement

It was comfortable in the end, but for the first four days of the Lord’s Test, England were made to graft for their rewards against a Bangladesh team that exceeded expectations

Start time 11.00am (10.00GMT)Big PictureSteven Finn claimed nine wickets on a flat deck at Lord’s, but the pacier Old Trafford wicket could be much more to his liking•Getty ImagesIt was comfortable in the end, but for the first four days of the Lord’s Test, England were made to graft for their rewards against a Bangladesh team that exceeded expectations, and even dominated significant passages of a match that most observers had expected to be over long before the end of the Bank Holiday weekend. But thanks to the bold endeavours of Tamim Iqbal, who blazed a thrilling century from 94 balls, and Shahadat Hossain, who became the first Bangladeshi to etch his name on the honours boards with five first-innings wickets, the underdogs emerged with credit from an entertaining encounter. All the same, the final margin of victory was emphatic – England hurtled home by eight wickets, having enforced the follow-on and knocked off their target of 160 in a single session – and as Andrew Strauss admitted after the match, he expects better from his charges in this week’s second Test, now that they have worked off their early-season rust. In Jonathan Trott, they have a batsman in a rich vein of form following his under-rated 226 in the first innings, while Steven Finn is the talk of Manchester following his nine-wicket haul on a typically flat Lord’s deck. Old Trafford is renowned for its pace and bounce, and if he finds the right length to exploit the conditions, another fat haul could be heading his way.Seeing as Bangladesh claimed six wickets in their entire Test campaign in 2005, and managed to lose two matches inside seven sessions on that ill-fated trip, the extent of their development has already been showcased. The challenge now is to build on the foundations that they laid in the Lord’s Test, and try their utmost to hang in for a draw – a result that would represent a major step towards their acceptance as a top-flight Test nation. Given the gung-ho style in which they go about their work, however, that might be expecting too much, but a fighting performance would still put them in a good frame of mind for the three ODIs that follow at the start of next month.Form guide (last five completed matches)England WWWLDBangladesh LLLLL
Watch out for…Steven Finn has never played a first-class match at Old Trafford – in his brief career, Middlesex have habitually been wallowing in the second division, out of contact with the top-flight Lancastrians – but when quizzed on the conditions, his eyes lit up at the prospect of playing at a pace-friendly venue where Steve Harmison produced arguably the last great performance of his England career, against Pakistan in 2006. As Finn’s Middlesex mentor, Angus Fraser, pointed out, the benefits of honing his technique on puddings is that he will be all the more ready to cash in when conditions are in his favour. After three Tests of hard graft, this match could be bonanza-time.Mushfiqur Rahim made his Test debut on the 2005 tour, and acquitted himself well during the recent home series with a battling 95 in the second innings at Chittagong. Scores of 16 and 0 at Lord’s last week were a disappointment, but they do not detract from a high-calibre cricketer who has the mindset to bat for long periods, not to mention a diminutive 5’2″ frame that cannot help but disrupt bowlers’ lengths. He will want to sign off from this series with a significant contribution.Team newsThe four-bowlers-versus-five question reared its head midway through the Lord’s Test, at a time when England were struggling to dislodge an obdurate Bangladeshi top-order, but it’s unlikely that any changes to the balance of the side will be unveiled for this match, especially now that the likeliest candidate to bat No. 7 in a five-man attack, Tim Bresnan, is sitting out the game with a stress fracture in his foot. Ajmal Shahzad is getting used to being leapfrogged in the final XI, but having waited patiently for his chance, he could well make his debut at the expense of the late inclusion to the squad, Ryan Sidebottom.England (probable) 1 Andrew Strauss (capt), 2 Alastair Cook, 3 Jonathan Trott, 4 Kevin Pietersen, 5 Ian Bell, 6 Eoin Morgan, 7 Matt Prior (wk), 8 Ajmal Shahzad, 9 Graeme Swann, 10 James Andeson, 11 Steven FinnBangladesh’s top-order batsmen acquitted themselves as best they could at Lord’s, with significant contributions from Nos. 1 to 4. More will be expected of the middle order at Old Trafford, particularly the captain and wicketkeeper axis of Shakib Al Hasan and Mushfiqur Rahim, but it is the bowling that will be the greatest concern to Jamie Siddons and the Bangladesh thinktank. Aside from Shahadat, the seamers were ineffectual at Lord’s, and Shafiul Islam will come into the side at the expense of either Rubel Hossain or, more likely, the Lord’s debutant, Robiul Islam, with the second spinner, Abdul Razzak, also an option. Tamim, meanwhile, gave Bangladesh a minor scare when he missed training on Wednesday, but he is expected to be passed fit despite the ongoing concerns over his injured wrist.Bangladesh (probable) 1 Tamim Iqbal, 2 Imrul Kayes, 3 Junaid Siddique, 4 Jahurul Islam, 5 Mohammad Ashraful, 6 Shakib Al Hasan (capt), 7 Mahmudullah, 8 Mushfiqur Rahim (wk), 9 Shafiul Islam, 10 Rubel Hossain, 11 Shahadat HossainPitch and conditionsManchester is not renowned for the most cheerful weather in the world, but the sun has been shining in recent days and the balmy conditions will doubtless be a boon to the Bangladeshis, who visibly struggled whenever the clouds took hold at Lord’s. However, if Old Trafford’s wicket plays up to its trampoline reputation, it will doubtless be a challenge come rain or shine.Stats and Trivia Their dominance isn’t quite as comprehensive as it used to be, but England are still the only Full Member nation never to have lost an international match against Bangladesh Bangladesh have only played one previous international fixture at Old Trafford, and that finished up as a ten-wicket defeat in June 2005, as Australia exacted emphatic revenge for their humiliation at Cardiff in the preceding week.Quotes”I know the way I bat sometimes looks fantastic, and sometimes looks ugly, but I am happy with the way I play my natural game.”
“They are definitely getting closer because more of their batsmen have the belief they can get decent scores. But, like most sides, if you keep chipping away and pressurising them, eventually you will see a collapse of some sort.”

Arsenal eyeing Aubameyang replacement

Arsenal are reportedly leading the race to sign Alexander Isak this month, according to reports…

What’s the word?

Catalan outlet El Nacional (via the Daily Mail) claim that the Gunners are in pole position to sign the Real Sociedad striker as manager Mikel Arteta looks to replace Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and Alexandre Lacazette.

The 22-year-old could make his move to the Emirates Stadium this month as the LaLiga outfit do not want to sell to a direct rival, with Barcelona also said to be interested.

Isak has a €90m (£75m) release clause at the Reale Arena, though Transfermarkt value the 31-cap Sweden international at around half that figure (£36m).

Bye-bye Aubameyang?

Aubameyang has not played for the north London giants since the 6th of December after being stripped of the captaincy and it’s thought that the club are willing to listen to offers for him during the January transfer window, as per Sky Sports.

A disciplinary issue is what has caused the 32-year-old’s demise at London Colney and with him set to continue to earn a whopping £350k-per-week over the next 18 months, it’s no wonder that the Gunners want him gone sooner rather than later.

Isak seems like a very wise replacement and one that could instantly make his mark at Arsenal.

The Swedish sensation has been in electric form once again this campaign, delivering seven goals from 21 appearances, across the Spanish top-flight and the Europa League.

That builds on last season’s tally of 17 goals in 34 league games.

After earning the division’s ‘Young Player of the Year’ award that campaign, Isak caught the eye at Euro 2020, where former Manchester United defender turned pundit, Rio Ferdinand, praised his ability.

“This kid, Isak, he was a problem today for the defenders in the Spain team,” he said during BBC’s coverage of Sweden vs Spain (via football.london). “He was a nuisance. He showed today why he’s got Young Player of the Year in La Liga. He was the outlet.”

Meanwhile, fellow ex-pro Gary Lineker has previously dubbed him an “exceptional talent”.

On the above evidence, Arteta would surely love to replace his controversial former captain with a player of Isak’s calibre. It’ll now be on Edu Gaspar and co to get it done.

The later they leave the Spaniard’s striker situation, the trickier things will get.

Umar blitz sets up Pakistan victory

It can’t bring back the World Twenty20 trophy, but Pakistan extracted some sort of revenge on Australia in their first meeting since the semi-final in St Lucia

The Bulletin by Brydon Coverdale at Edgbaston05-Jul-2010
Scorecard and ball-by-ball detailsUmar Akmal’s 64 set up Pakistan’s win•Getty ImagesIt can’t bring back the World Twenty20 trophy, but Pakistan extracted some sort of revenge on Australia in their first meeting since the semi-final in St Lucia. Again, a vigorous Umar Akmal half-century set up Pakistan’s innings but this time their bowlers, led by Mohammad Aamer, did enough to strangle Australia’s run-rate and deny Michael Clarke’s men, who couldn’t chase down 168.In May, it took something special from Michael Hussey to drive Australia into the decider against England, as he monstered the 18 needed off the last over, bowled by Saeed Ajmal. This time, Ajmal fittingly collected the final wicket and was mobbed by his team-mates as Australia fell to a 23-run defeat, their first loss to Pakistan in any format in their past 13 meetings.Umar set up the victory with the fastest Twenty20 international half-century by a Pakistan player, a 21-ball effort that brought the thousands of Pakistan fans at Edgbaston to their feet. Their 167 for 8 looked competitive but gettable, and when David Warner scythed five boundaries from Shoaib Akhtar’s first five balls, Australia appeared to be in charge. But once the field went back, and Shahid Afridi and Umar Gul came on, the runs dried up. Gul delivered yorker after yorker, and Afridi altered his pace and angle to keep Warner and David Hussey guessing during their 52-run stand. Hussey had 34 from 28 balls when he skied Afridi to mid-on, and Warner followed in the next over.Warner’s 41 from 31 was more restrained than his usual Twenty20 efforts, with the attack on Akhtar his only period of dominance. Ajmal, the unlucky man asked to bowl the final over in St Lucia, deceived Warner with a ball that went straight on, beat the bat and crashed into the stumps. That brought Michael Hussey to the crease, but there were no heroics this time. The Australians needed some top-order support for Warner; instead, Michael Clarke’s dismal Twenty20 batting record continued. He was caught for 5, trying to force Abdul Razzaq through cover and it is now eight innings since he has scored better than a run a ball in a Twenty20 for his country.Aamer (3 for 27) began the strong bowling effort by trapping Shane Watson lbw in the first over of the chase, before he returned to snare the key wickets of Cameron White and Steven Smith. With every wicket the Pakistan fans roared and blasted on their air horns, just as they had during Umar’s batting blitz. The highlight of his 64 was a pair of sixes straight down the ground off Smith, but his ability to the find the gaps and invent ways of scoring was remarkable. It takes a brave man to paddle sweep a Dirk Nannes full toss off middle stump, but Umar made it look like the most logical selection of stroke and ran the ball to the fine-leg boundary. He departed in the 19th over, bowled by Shaun Tait, but by then he’d done enough. Umar was the star, but he had good support from Shoaib Malik in a 51-run stand that included 20 off one over, as Malik launched a stinging attack on David Hussey’s offspin.Malik was out in unusual fashion when he edged a slow bouncer behind off Nannes and the batsmen took a cheeky single, only for replays to show that Tim Paine had completed the catch diving forward. Pakistan looked like they might not even bat out their overs after they stumbled to 47 for 4 in the eighth over.Umar’s recovery won Pakistan the game, and earned him the Man-of-the-Match award. There was no world trophy on offer, but the win will give Pakistan confidence ahead of their long tour of England. And a confident Pakistan is a dangerous Pakistan.

Tanguy Ndombele could yet stay at Spurs

Tanguy Ndombele could still remain a Tottenham Hotspur player past January 31st despite reports suggesting otherwise…

What’s the word?

The Frenchman, who cost a club-record £55m in the summer of 2020, was booed by supporters in last weekend’s FA Cup third-round triumph over Morecambe.

As the jeers got louder, Ndombele got slower as he was substituted in the 69th minute, all whilst the side were still 1-0 down to the League One minnows.

After the match, transfer guru Fabrizio Romano delivered an update on his future, claiming that “Tottenham are looking for a solution to sell or loan out Tanguy Ndombele in January,” whilst The Athletic believe the 25-year-old is hopeful for a move away.

However, according to Sky Sports reporter Lyall Thomas, Ndombele isn’t unhappy at the club and he could yet stay despite the controversy.

“I’ve done plenty of probing around on this – to see if there’ll be any potential suitors out there for him. The kind of level of club that could potentially pay that money, certainly – let’s obviously talk hypothetically first about any permanent options for him – they’re not desperate for that position,” he revealed to the ‘Last Word on Spurs’ podcast this week.

“I just don’t think there’s the options out there for him this month, Ndombele. And I’ve been told by sources close to the player as well that he’s not unhappy at Spurs, despite his body language the other day.”

Likely to stay?

It would seem that Ndombele is more likely to stay than go right now and that’s hardly a surprise given his reported £200k-per-week wages – who on earth is going to pay that, along with a transfer fee, for a player that has failed to cut it in the Premier League for quite some time?

He missed the midweek defeat to Chelsea in the Carabao Cup but weirdly, manager Antonio Conte hinted at the decision being from above his head. “It was a technical decision, but before to take the decision, I don’t take the decision if I don’t consult the club, there is the club line and I have to follow the club line,” he claimed after the game.

If Conte is still keen to use him and the player isn’t actually unhappy behind the scenes at Hotspur Way, as Thomas suggests, then you’d imagine there are going to be several sections of the Lilywhites’ faithful absolutely fuming.

Once the crowd turns against you in that manner, there is surely no way back but we’ve been here before with Ndombele. He reportedly wanted out under Jose Mourinho. He reportedly wanted out under Nuno Santo. And now here we are with a third successive manager.

It’s no wonder the fans have given up with their club-record signing. He arrived with so much promise from Lyon, only to deliver ten goals and nine assists in 91 appearances, via Transfermarkt.

That means he has a direct contribution once every 4.7 matches, which isn’t good enough for an attacking playmaker.

All in all, there won’t be many pleased with this behind the scenes bombshell from the Sky Sports journalist. With a little over two weeks to go, only time will tell if Ndombele will remain a Spurs player for the foreseeable future.

AND in other news, Spurs eye 1st Jan signing in “crazy” £7.2m-rated beast, he could be Conte’s next Pirlo…

Andre Adams returns for Auckland

Auckland have signed allrounder Andre Adams as their principal overseas professional for the 2010-11 domestic season

Cricinfo staff29-Jul-2010Auckland have signed allrounder Andre Adams as their principal overseas professional for the 2010-11 domestic season. He will be available to Auckland for the Plunket Shield, Twenty20 and one-day competitions.”We’re delighted to welcome him back,” Auckland chief executive Andrew Eade told the . “His experience will be a huge asset for the team and because he’s been part of the Aces setup he will fit in immediately.”Adams had made his debut for Auckland in the 1997-98 season. In his last domestic first-class competition for the side in 2007-08, Adams took 29 wickets at an average of 8.27 before leaving to represent Nottinghamshire. In 108 first-class games, Adams has taken 430 wickets at 24 apiece, and scored three centuries.

Everton open talks with Fabio Cannavaro

Everton are on the hunt for their new manager to lead the club out of a tumultuous season so far that has left the club teetering on the edge of the relegation zone just four points clear of the drop in 16th right now, and Farhad Moshiri is wasting no more time after the most recent defeat to Aston Villa at Goodison Park on Saturday afternoon.

What’s the word?

According to TuttoSport via Sport Witness, Everton manager candidate, Fabio Cannavaro has made an ‘excellent impression’ on Moshiri and Bill Kenwirght during ‘preliminary talks’ for the potential of taking on the role as the next manager at Goodison Park.

The report states that discussions opened on Wednesday between the Italian legend and the Everton board, with Cannavaro believing it could be the ‘turning point’ in his career.

Sky Sports have reported a number of names in the running for the Premier League job, including Wayne Rooney, Frank Lampard, Graham Potter, who ruled himself out early on, and Roberto Martinez who had the move blocked by the Belgian FA.

Better suited than Benitez

Although the 48-year-old’s CV does not match up to that of former Toffees manager Rafa Benitez, he does come with a better career win rate that is currently 55% compared to the Spaniard’s 49%.

Despite his lack of managerial know-how at an elite level, the Italian, who was hailed an “icon” by Leonardo Bonucci, still brings from his long and successful career some invaluable experiences, winning the Ballon d’Or, World Cup and two La Liga titles to name a few of his impressive accolades.

This winning mentality that Cannavaro has earned and developed throughout his playing career could have a great and unique influence on the Everton team who are clearly lacking confidence and inspiration which has translated into their performances, causing a downward spiral that has led to their ongoing demise in the Premier League with just five wins from 20 games.

Successful players who turn their hand to management, have gone onto great things when given the opportunity to manage at an elite level, with Zinedine Zidane the perfect example of a hugely successful winner as a player turning into a managerial success, and Cannavaro could find the right path with Everton if he was given the opportunity to manage the side.

Moshiri will need to make a decision on the direction for the Merseyside club soon, as Toffees fans fury boiled over this weekend with supporters becoming aggressive in the stadium by throwing bottles at players, protests in the stands and even fans approaching Bill Kenwright after the defeat on Saturday.
