We built pressure on them to get runs, and got wickets – Akshay Wakhare

The Vidarbha offspinner said that if their batsmen could get off to a good start, there would be no stopping the team in the Irani Cup

Sreshth Shah in Nagpur12-Feb-2019″Keep things simple” at all times. That’s the mantra Vidarbha’s bowlers used on the first day of their Irani Cup match against Rest of India, and the one that earned them rewards, according to off-spinner Akshay Wakhare. At one stage after lunch, Mayank Agarwal and Hanuma Vihari had set RoI’s base towards a mammoth first-innings score when they were 171 for 1, with both batsmen nearing centuries. But disciplined bowling from Vidarbha meant nine wickets fell for only 159 more runs. After Agarwal and Vihari had started well, the spinners found their rhythm to systematically dismantle a team whose batting looks powerful on paper. What worked for Vidarbha was their decision to switch to attritional cricket. Ajinkya Rahane could hit no boundaries in his 38-ball stay, and after his wicket in the 50th over, the RoI batsmen could find the fence only 13 more times.”After the start they got, I think our bowlers applied themselves really well to make a comeback,” Wakhare said after the first day’s play. “When Rahane came, we decided to focus bowling on maidens during that period. We built pressure on the batsmen to score runs, and that’s how we got his wicket.”Wakhare, himself, had the brightest bowling figures on the day, although two of his three scalps were lower-order batsmen. The top-order batsman that he dismissed – the hard-hitting Ishan Kishan – fell to a specific plan to bait him into throwing his wicket away.”Ishan Kishan is basically a hitter, he never does defense, we know that,” Wakhare said. “We’ve been playing for 3-4 years together so we know how he plays. I had very simple plans, bowl away from him, don’t give him easy runs and he will try something.”That plan forced Kishan to try and clear the cover-fielder, but with the ball turning away from him, all he could do was splice a simple catch to the infielder. The turn was prominent as the day’s play progressed, and Wakhare said that the pace of the spin bowler determined how much (or little) the ball turns in Nagpur. In all, the spinners accounted for seven RoI wickets.”At first, we thought it was going to turn if spinners bowl fast, but it wasn’t like that,” Wakhare said. “You had to look to bowl slow to extract spin here.”For Vidarbha, though, the job has just begun. On a pitch that has had an average first-innings score of just under 400, a result is always likely.Wakhare felt that Vidarbha’s opening pair holds the key to their success, and that if they manage to consolidate well on the second morning, then Vidarbha would be favourites to defend their Irani Cup title, despite the line-up lacking Wasim Jaffer, who is sitting out with injury.”The batting wicket is very good,” Wakhare said. “If we get a good opening stand, then there’s no stopping us.”

Arsenal’s "unpredictable" £69m target could be as good as Sanchez

With Mikel Arteta seeking to bolster his attacking options in the new year, recent reports have indicated that the Arsenal boss could look to the Serie A market in order to snap up a high-profile January recruit.

Arsenal transfer news

According to Italian outlet, TuttoJuve, the Gunners are believed to be among a raft of clubs who are showing an interest in Juventus sensation, Federico Chiesa, with the likes of Liverpool, Newcastle United and Tottenham Hotspur also keen on the 26-year-old.

The report suggest that the Old Lady could consider cashing in on the wing wizard if they are to receive an offer of around €80m (£69m), with the former Fiorentina man currently having just 18 months left to run on his existing deal in Turin.

The belief is that the Bianconeri are still hoping to extend the forward's deal by a further year until 2026 in order to help ward off any interest, although failure to secure that extension could well have Arteta and co sniffing around, either next month or over the summer.

Federico Chiesa's style of play

While the north Londoners remain firmly in the title equation, it is fair to say that the frontline hasn't been firing on all cylinders of late, with Bukayo Saka currently leading the way with just eight goals in all competitions, while Gabriel Martinelli, for instance, has just four goals from his left-wing berth.

Bringing in increased competition in that role in the form of Chiesa could then represent an ideal scenario for those at the Emirates, with the Italy international the type of "unpredictable" talent who can help to wreak havoc on opposition defences – as hailed by former Azzurri striker, Antonio Di Natale.

Mbappe-like striker 1 of 5 players Arsenal could sign instead of Ivan Toney

Arsenal could turn to one of these alternatives rather than signing Ivan Toney in 2024.

ByMatt Dawson Dec 25, 2023

Having seen much of the last few years impacted by injury, the Euro 2020 winner is beginning to find his feet again in Max Allegri's side, recording a respectable haul of five goals and two assists in 15 Serie A games this season.

What is also interesting to note about the £153k-per-week speedster is his apparent likeness to a former Arsenal star, Alexis Sanchez, with the pair sharing a number of statistical and stylistic similarities, as per FBref.

That comparison between the two forwards – who can both operate off the left or through the middle – is best illustrated by their shared creative threat, with Chiesa ranking in the top 5% among his European peers for shot-creating actions, as well as in the top 12% for progressive passes per 90.

Sanchez, meanwhile, ranks in the top 6% for those same two metrics respectively, while also ranking in the top 15% for successful take-ons per 90 as a marker of his continued brilliance at beating his man – something which Chiesa ranks in the top 8% for.

While the Chilean – who currently plies his trade for Inter Milan after leaving Marseille over the summer – may no longer be in his pomp at the age of 35, he is still a noteworthy figure to be likened to due to his prior heroics in north London.

After signing from Barcelona in 2014, the explosive ace went on to score 80 goals and provide 45 assists in 166 games in all competitions, showing himself to be a truly "class, class player" – as lauded by his ex-Barca boss, Pep Guardiola in 2017.

If Chiesa is to follow in Sanchez's footsteps and move from an elite European club to the Emirates, perhaps he can also take on a talismanic role at the forefront of Arteta's side – as his 5 foot 7 counterpart previously did under the great Arsene Wenger.

Yorkshire snatch tie after vital Tattersall-Bresnan stand

Tim Bresnan and Jonny Tattersall resurrected Yorkshire, who scrambled a bye from the final ball for a share of the spoils

ECB Reporters Network19-Apr-2019A wonderful match came down to the final ball with former Warwickshire spinner Josh Poysden needing to find two runs to secure a Yorkshire victory. He swished and missed – but the batsmen scrambled a bye to bring the scores level. It was a pulsating match in which Warwickshire amassed 270 for 8, a solid total but one which appeared no more than par on a good batting pitch. Tim Ambrose provided their backbone with a well-worked 77 but without Adam Hose (absent with a hand injury sustained in the nets the day before the game) and Ian Bell (foot injury) in the top order, too many others got in then got out.It looked a very good total after Henry Brookes and Chris Woakes reduced Yorkshire to 33 for 4. A superb sixth-wicket partnership of 138 in 24 overs between Tim Bresnan and Jonny Tattersall then kept their side alive before a game which fluctuated fascinatingly all day – a tribute to the format – finished all square. Fifty-over cricket was the winner.Warwickshire, put in, lost Ed Pollock to the 11th ball when Bresnan rattled his off stump. Bresnan then removed the other opener Dom Sibley, caught by wicketkeeper Tattersall.A fine spell of 7-0-17-0 from captain Steve Patterson kept a brake on the scoring before Adil Rashid removed Sam Hain, stumped by Tattersall. While Ambrose settled, Will Rhodes moved fluently to 43 against his former county before tickling a leg-side offering from Mathew Pillans to the wicketkeeper.Liam Banks, on his List A debut, made a punchy 31 off 28 balls but when he and Woakes hoisted Poysden to long-off in quick succession, the innings lost momentum when it needed to be gathering it. Ambrose’s 24th List A half-century was ended by a catch at deep midwicket and Yorkshire, who had piled up 379 in their North Group opener two days earlier, could reflect on a decent job done. They were less happy when four down in the 11th over. Brookes hit the stumps of Tom Kohler-Cadmore and Adam Lyth and Woakes had Harry Brook caught in the gully and the in-form Gary Ballance taken at cover. David Willey and Tattersall added 56 in 11 overs before Willey spliced a pull at young seamer George Panayi to mid-on.That was 89 for 5 but Tattersall and Bresnan both advanced to 56-ball half-centuries to take their side into the last ten overs with 80 required. The sixth-wicket pair brought the chase down to 44 needed from five when both fell in three balls, Tattersall bowled by Jeetan Patel and Bresnan caught by Patel at cover off Woakes. It came down to 10 needed from the last over, delivered by Brookes and when Patterson swiped the second ball for four, suddenly the Vikings were favourites again. With three needed from three balls, Pillans holed out to mid-off, but the batsmen crossed, leaving Patterson on strike. A single brought Poysden down to face his first ball against his former club – and a bye meant a fine match concluded in a tie.

Greenwood future currently uncertainBarcelona interested in forwardCould offer Vitor Roque to Man UtdWHAT HAPPENED?

Greenwood's future remains uncertain as he heads towards the end of his loan season with Getafe. Manchester United have agreed to take up an option to extend his contract until 2026 which gives the Red Devils options, according to. One such scenario could see Barcelona offer youngster Vitor Roque in exchange for Greenwood, with the Brazilian struggling for minutes in Catalonia. However, Manchester United would prefer a straight sale.

AdvertisementTHE BIGGER PICTURE

Barcelona president Joan Laporta has asked Getafe about Greenwood after seeing the forward score eight times and pick up six assists in La Liga. The club's summer transfer business maybe restricted due to their ongoing financial difficulties, but Greenwood could be available cheap and a summer exit for Vitor Roque does appear likely. The Brazilian's agent Andre Cury has hit out at Xavi and Barca for his lack of game time following his arrival in January from Athletico Paranaense. Vitor Roque has made just two La Liga starts for Barca, and Cury has claimed he will seek a permanent transfer if Xavi's side ask him to go out on loan.

WHAT GETAFE HAVE SAID

Getafe chief Angel Torres spoke about Greenwod's future recently in an interview with Radio Marca. He said: “If it was up to the lad, his parents and the club, I think he would continue for another year.

“Regarding Manchester United, the news that we have from last week, where the sporting director went to England to see some games and was with them, is that, if a good offer comes along, they would want to sell because he is not going to go back there.

"We’ll have to wait until the end of June. The people and the coach are very happy with him. I think he will remain with us for another season, or at least until January. He is a good footballer.”

Celtic in Old Firm race for Scott McKenna this January

Celtic are hoping to lure Scottish centre-back Scott McKenna to Parkhead as Brendan Rodgers seeks to bolster his defence this January.

In the Scottish Premiership, Celtic's defensive record is strong. The Hoops, eight points clear at the top of the table, have only let in 15 in their first 22 matches. The only team to have conceded fewer is their Old Firm rivals, who also have two games in hand.

However, against stronger opposition in the Champions League, Brendan Rodgers' side have looked more exposed. Across their six matches, Celtic conceded 15 times, and that was a big part of the reason why they finished bottom of their group and exited Europe altogether heading into the new year. Only Belgian side Antwerp (17) conceded more in that phase, and so it's not particularly surprising that the club are seemingly intent on bolstering their backline in January.

McKenna emerges as Celtic target

According to Sky Sports, both Celtic and arch-rivals Rangers are interested in Scott McKenna of Nottingham Forest. Forest have made him available for transfer this month, paving the way for a battle between the Old Firm clubs.

There's a possibility that McKenna could move north of the border on loan first, and then join his new club on a permanent deal come the summer when his Forest contract expires.

McKenna started Forest's first five Premier League games this season, but hasn't featured at all since. In December, the Daily Mail's Sami Mokbel revealed that the club had banished him from first-team training ahead of an anticipated January exit. Even the sacking of Steve Cooper and the arrival of Nuno Espirito Santo as his replacement has failed to bring about an improvement in his situation.

Rodgers could get his man from 2018

It's a surprise to see McKenna treated this way. Signed in 2020 from Aberdeen, he's played 105 games for Forest, nearly half of which (51) came in 2021/22 as they achieved promotion back to the English top flight. The centre-back was instrumental in that achievement, winning man of the match when they beat Huddersfield in the play-off final (Sky Football).

He remained an important figure last season as Forest prolonged their return, starting 20 of the 25 games for which he was available, but now he's been completely frozen out.

Celtic want to sign Lawrence Shankland ahead of four Premier League sides

He’s been on a fantastic run of form this campaign…

BySean Markus Clifford Jan 5, 2024

He'll be a familiar name for Celtic fans given his time with Aberdeen and his international career with Scotland, which now spans 30 caps (including one at the last European Championship). Manager Rodgers will certainly be familiar too, having made an attempt to bring him to Parkhead during his first stint as Celtic boss in 2018.

According to Football Scotland, Aberdeen rejected an initial £3.5m bid, and then Celtic refused to return with a better offer. Two years later, when he got his move to England, they may have thought that the ship had sailed, but with McKenna still of a decent footballing age at 27, Rodgers could finally get his man. If it is to be an initial loan, then it could come down to which Glaswegian club is willing to pay a greater share of his Forest wages, and which offers him a more significant role in the squad.

Bavuma 104 trumps Smuts' 121 to help Lions complete double

Chasing Lions’ lofty score, Smuts played a virtual lone hand with a boundary-laden century that took his team to within touching distance of victory

The Report by Liam Brickhill05-May-2019Both captains scored hundreds, but JJ Smuts’ 121 off 60 was not enough to better Temba Bavuma’s 104 off 63 and the Lions won the final of the CSA T20 Challenge by 11 runs at the Wanderers.Chasing Lions’ lofty 203 for 4, Smuts played a virtual lone hand with a boundary-laden century that took his team to within touching distance of their target after they had been down and out at 161 for 8 with 18 balls remaining. But Smuts would not be stopped, storming to a 51-ball hundred in the 18th over – beating his own record of 54 deliveries for the fastest T20 hundred by a Warriors batsman. With only No. 11 Sithembile Langa for company going into the penultimate over with 34 needed from 12 balls, Smuts turned down three singles in a row and then smashed 16 off the next four – including a no-ball above waist height that was lifted cleanly over the leg side for six. That left Warriors needing an improbable 18 from the last over, bowled by Migael Pretorius, but when Smuts cracked the first ball over long-on for his seventh six, Warriors might have dared to dream. But Smuts top-edged the next delivery, and though Nono Pongolo and Reeza Hendricks collided in the outfield while trying to take the catch, Pongolo was able to hang on, bringing a heart-stopping finale to an end. Pongolo’s catch under pressure ensured that Lions secured their second trophy of the season, having also won the 4-Day Franchise Series in similarly nail-biting fashion in January. It meant that Smuts’ century was upstaged by Bavuma’s maiden century in T20s that set up what was ultimately a winning total. Bavuma’s efforts were ably backed up by Rassie van der Dussen, who contributed 73 runs off 41 balls to a record 165-run third wicket stand that set up Lions’ innings after they were put in to bat by Warriors and slipped to 30 for 2.Van der Dussen’s knock, which included three fours and five massive sixes, continued his trend of vital runs in T20 tournament finals. He also scored 59 not out to guide Jozi Stars to victory in the inaugural Mzansi Super League last year and contributed a vital, unbeaten 44 in the final of the Global T20 Canada last year.Smuts’ and van der Dussen’s partnership beat the long-standing record of 154 held by Henry Davids and Benji Hector for Cape Cobras against Eagles in Kimberley in 2006-07. It was also the second-highest stand for any wicket in the franchise T20 tournament, with the pair especially brutal on Langa, thrashing him for 69 in four overs, another competition record and one that surpassed the 0 for 57 by Junior Dala for Titans against Knights in 2016-17.Set a massive task in chasing down the second-highest total of the tournament on a late-season track, Warriors looked like they were going to roll over even before the chase could get going as the outstanding left-arm spinner Bjorn Fortuin, one of the stars of the competition and its leading wicket-taker, ripped through their top order. He was well supported by Pretorius as the match appeared to be headed for an early finish. Smuts finally found some support from Onke Nyaku, who contributed 27, as they added 73 for the sixth wicket to get the score to 129.Although there was not much support from there, Smuts took the game till the last over, aided by that expensive 16-run penultimate over from Lizaad Williams. But Pretorius enticed the vital false stroke with just 12 needed and Pongolo held on to the skier from the key batsmen to end Smuts’ valiant knock and send Lions into delirium.

Arsenal missed out on the Premier League title this season in heartbreaking fashion, however, they are looking to put their misery away quickly and prepare for next season. As such, Mikel Arteta has asked the club to sign a striker as a priority before the start of their pre-season tour.

As per The Independent, the two names that are prominent on Arsenal's shortlist are Newcastle United's Alexander Isak and Ajax's Brian Brobbey. They also have Sporting striker Viktor Gyokeres on their list as a possibility but they may face competition for his signing from Chelsea.

In regard to Isak's situation, the Gunners know that Newcastle may not want to sell the Swede this summer and are therefore preparing other options.

DID YOU KNOW?

During the January transfer window, Arsenal tried to sign Brentford's Ivan Toney to fortify their goalscoring abilities, however, the club was thrown off by the Bees' asking price of £100 million ($127m) and therefore decided to move on to other targets and are unlikely to target him again this summer.

Chelsea hold talks over move to sign £30m "star" who could cover for James

Chelsea are gearing up for a busy end to the January transfer window and could make an offer for a new player who has caught the eye at Stamford Bridge due to his versatility.

Chelsea January rumours

So far, the Blues have been relatively quiet in the market, with the focus so far being on outgoings. However, Mauricio Pochettino did seem to admit last month that winter window signings were on the cards.

"The Sporting Director and us, we are always talking and assessing – if we need to do something, we'll be ready," said Pochettino on January transfers at Chelsea.

"The pressure is always to bring young talent, and we have different types of targets – with experience, without experience, some younger than others and that's what it takes to provide the team with what it needs.

"We need to be open to describing the situation. Always communication is really good with the owners, we're sharing everything. It's about sharing ideas; we need each other to express our vision in a way that's a positive statement for the club. If we need to add, we do it together, in a way that takes the best decision for the club."

There have been plenty of rumours regarding a new striker arriving, with Napoli’s Victor Osimhen appearing to be the top target in 2024, although five alternative forwards have been offered to the club as short-term solutions.

Additions at the back could also be made, with full-backs Ben Chilwell and Reece James struggling with injury and Ian Maatsen heading out on loan. Manchester United’s Luke Shaw emerged as a possible target last week, but it looks as if a move for Southampton’s Kyle Walker-Peters could be made before the deadline.

Chelsea hold Walker-Peters talks

According to TEAMtalk, Chelsea have held talks with Walker-Peters’ agent over the chance of a possible January deal. The report claims that a bid could now be made for his services and there ‘is some belief from sources close to the player that he could be available for £30m this month’.

It is believed that ‘his ability to play at both right and left-back is attractive to Chelsea’ and the fact he could cover for James and Chilwell is ‘pushing the Chelsea board to make a decision over his future’.

Labelled a Saints “star” by reporter Alfie House, Walker-Peters has shown his versatility this season in the Championship by turning out as a left-back, attacking midfielder and right-winger on occasions alongside his regular right-back role.

The 26-year-old has even contributed to four goals in 26 second-tier games and has been Southampton’s best defensive performer this season, as per WhoScored.

Farke could land dream Summerville partner as Leeds push for £25k-p/w ace

The January transfer window has just over a week left to run and Leeds United are yet to make a signing to bolster Daniel Farke's playing squad.

It has been a relatively quiet window for the Whites so far as they have allowed two first-team players to depart and sent Darko Gyabi on loan to Plymouth Argyle.

Djed Spence was sent back to parent club Tottenham Hotspur at the start of the month, five months earlier than expected, and Luke Ayling joined Middlesbrough on loan until the end of the season in search of regular game time.

Leeds are currently vying to land automatic promotion back to the Premier League at the first attempt, as shown in the table above, and they could improve their chances of being successful by adding more quality to the group before the window slams shut.

Signing a proven Championship performer who has experience winning the division, for example, could give them a boost, which is why emerging links to Burnley's Manuel Benson should be exciting for supporters.

Leeds pushing to land Premier League forward

According to Belgian journalist Sasha Tavolieri, the Whites are 'pushing' to secure a deal to sign the Clarets forward before the end of the window.

The reporter claims that the club are keen on a swoop for the Premier League attacker and will move 'until the end' to bring him to Elland Road this month.

However, there is no mention of whether it would be a permanent transfer for the impressive winger or, instead, a loan with an option to buy in the summer.

Manuel Benson

Tavolieri adds that Leeds expect Wilfried Gnonto to join Premier League side West Ham United, as they view the move as 'likely', and have identified Benson as his replacement.

The Italy international wanted to move on from the club last summer and went as far as to hand in a transfer request in August 2023 after the Whites turned down four offers from Everton.

Leeds rejected up to £25m from the Toffees and the young forward eventually remained at Elland Road and was integrated back into the first-team squad.

It now remains to be seen how much they value the 20-year-old ace at this month and how much West Ham are willing to pay for his services.

If Leeds do cash in on Gnonto and replace him with Benson, Farke could land a dream partner for Crysencio Summerville on the opposite flank to the Dutch whiz.

Opposition defences could be terrified when they come up against the pair as they are both outstanding Championship operators who can cause constant problems in the final third.

Crysencio Summerville's Championship excellence

The 22-year-old sensation has been in terrific form since the club were relegated from the Premier League and has spearheaded their attack this season.

Summerville has showcased his quality in front of goal with 12 strikes in 24 Championship appearances. No other Leeds player has hit double figures for goals, with Dan James and Joel Piroe both in second place with nine.

Leeds duo Daniel Farke and Crysencio Summerville.

In fact, the impressive forward currently ranks within the top 4% of attacking midfielders and wingers within the division for non-penalty goals (0.52) per 90 this term, despite racking up 0.36 non-penalty Expected Goals per 90.

This shows that he has been one of the best goalscoring wingers in the league and has been efficient with his finishing, as the Leeds star has outperformed his npxG.

Summerville has also been a superb creator for his side with seven assists and 13 'big chances' created for his teammates – second only to Georginio Rutter's nine assists and 18 'big chances' created within the squad.

The sublime whiz ranks within the top 1% of his Championship positional peers for shot-creating actions (6.82) and the top 3% for Expected Assisted Goals (0.37) per 90 respectively.

These statistics show that he is a fantastic scorer and creator of goals from a left wing position, which is what Benson could be for Farke on the right flank.

Benson's Championship track record

The £25k-per-week wizard joined Burnley from Royal Antwerp in the summer of 2022 and enjoyed a terrific debut season in English football.

Vincent Kompany's side romped their way to promotion and won the Championship title in the process, with Benson playing a valuable role in that success.

The left-footed whiz, who was described as a "beautiful" player by journalist Josh Bunting, played in 33 of their 46 matches and caught the eye with his ability to score goals and create high-quality opportunities for his fellow forwards.

Benson racked up 11 goals in those 33 outings, despite only being a starter in 14 games, and ranked within the top 1% of attacking midfielders and wingers in the division for non-penalty goals (0.66) per 90.

The Belgian talent, who was only provided with 0.24 npxG per 90, was one of the best attackers in the Championship when it came to scoring from open play at a consistent rate.

He was also an impressive creator for his teammates from the right flank. Benson ranked within the top 4% of his positional peers for both shot-creating actions (4.53) and Expected Assisted Goals (0.25) per 90 for Burnley.

These statistics show that the Clarets magician is a proven Championship performer who has the quality to be one of the best in the division when it comes to scoring goals from open play and creating quality opportunities for his fellow attackers on a regular basis.

Therefore, Farke could land a dream partner for Summerville as the wing duo could terrify opposition full-backs with their immense quality in the final third, which is why this could be a fantastic signing for the Whites if they are able to pull it off.

Tony Palladino bowls Derbyshire back into the match with 3 for 3

Visitors bowled out for 139 but 35-year-old seamer puts them back on track

ECB Reporters Network27-May-2019Tony Palladino bowled his side back into the match after Derbyshire had been dismissed for just 139 in their County Championship match against Leicestershire at the Fischer County Ground.Veteran seamer Palladino ended the day having taken three wickets and conceded only three runs from nine overs of medium-paced swing bowling, ensuring a remarkable day’s cricket finished roughly even. He was following the example of Leicestershire’s quartet of seamers, who had earlier taken full advantage of the cloudy conditions.Mohammad Abbas took 3 for 38 and Chris Wright 3 for 39, while Dieter Klein and Will Davis took two wickets apiece on a pitch which, while offering occasional slight assistance to the bowlers, was far from the minefield the scores might suggest.Billy Godleman and fellow opener Luis Reece were made to work for every run by the accuracy of Abbas and Wright, but having seen off Abbas, the visitors lost their first wicket when Klein swung a quick delivery back into Reece and won a leg before decision.Godleman followed without another run being added, edging Wright low to first slip where Paul Horton held the catch. The Leicestershire skipper held his second catch when Davis found the edge of Middlesex loanee Tom Lace, and soon afterwards Abbas got the reward his earlier efforts had deserved when Alex Hughes edged an outswinger to wicket-keeper Lewis Hill. There was hope for Derbyshire in the form shown by Wayne Madsen, the experienced right-hander stroking eight boundaries in going to an unbeaten 39 at lunch, but he lost partner Harvey Hosein soon after the break, leg before to a full, straight delivery from Wright before himself being given leg before to an Abbas delivery that seamed sharply back.Matt Critchley was caught chest-high by Colin Ackermann at second slip off Abbas, Anuj Dal held at the second attempt by Harry Dearden at third slip off a full delivery from Wright, and Palladino clipped Davis straight to Hassan Azad at square leg before Ravi Rampaul top-edged an attempted hook at Klein to Wright at long leg.Leicestershire’s batsmen fared no better, however. Horton was unfortunate, under-edging a wide delivery from Palladino on to his off-stump, but Ateeq Javid was palpably leg before to a straight delivery before Mark Cosgrove edged a Reece ball that bounced more than he expected low to first slip.Ackermann’s dismissal, leg before playing across the line to Palladino, came shortly before bad light ended play seven overs early, a further ten overs having been lost earlier to showers.
