Azeem Rafiq calls on ECB, politicians to intervene after Yorkshire delay publication of racism report

Former England U19 and Yorkshire captain prompted report after his allegations of racism at the club a year ago

George Dobell18-Aug-2021Azeem Rafiq has called for the ECB and politicians to intervene after Yorkshire further delayed the publication of a report into racism at the club.Rafiq, the former England U19 and Yorkshire captain, provoked the report after his allegations of racism at the club a year ago. At the time, the club said they hoped to complete it by Christmas 2020. As it is, it is understood the 100-page report was sent to Yorkshire officials on Saturday morning (August 14).Rather than publishing it, or even its conclusions and recommendations, ESPNcricinfo understands that Yorkshire instead plan to produce a statement confirming they have received it and are currently reflecting on its contents. It is likely, however, the statement will confirm that several – though not all – of Rafiq’s allegations of institutional racism at the club have been upheld. Rafiq has not been sent a copy of the report or contacted by the authors or the club.ESPNcricinfo has seen much of the evidence and is aware of some of the conclusions. Among the witness statements are reports of multiple Asian players claiming they were called ‘smelly P***’ and a Yorkshire captain routinely using the word ‘n*****.’ More than one age-group coach also reports they were told not to select too many Asian youngsters in their side.Furthermore, the report provides evidence of previous complaints of racism at the club that were not satisfactorily investigated or resolved. Among those complaints was one by Adil Rashid, the England legspinner, who told club officials at the end of the 2017 season about his “concerns about [the] treatment of certain individuals based on race”, in the words of an internal club report. While the club did not hold a meeting to investigate those complaints until the end of August 2018 – ESPNcricinfo has obtained minutes of the meeting from a whistle-blower at the club – it acknowledges that Rashid and Rafiq both expressed concerns.Rashid has so far declined to comment publicly on the episode. At one stage, Yorkshire’s lawyers informed Rafiq that Rashid would be providing evidence against him; a suggestion that was not true.Adil Rashid has subsequently contacted ESPNcricinfo to clarify that, whatever issues he may have had with Yorkshire, they have long since been resolved. He also says he does not remember the detail of what was spoken about at the 2017 meeting which he recalls as an informal conversation at a dinner. The evidence outlining his complaint in 2017 was provided by the club.Yorkshire declined to acknowledge Rafiq’s interviews in which he detailed his allegations of racism at the club until they were carried by ESPNcricinfo on 2 September, 2020. He had previously made similar comments to Wisden.com (on August 17, 2020) and the podcast. While some of those named in the report are well-known players – several of them former players – there are no players currently involved with England sides implicated. Indeed, Rafiq has been full of praise for the support of England’s Test captain, Joe Root, and several former coaches including Paul Farbrace and Jason Gillespie. There is, however, one coach who is currently involved in the England pathway system named in the witness statements. ESPNcricinfo understands this section of the report has been brought to the attention of ECB officials.ESPNcricinfo also understands Yorkshire offered Rafiq a large financial settlement – believed to be in excess of £100,000 – some months ago. He declined as it would have required him to sign a non-disclosure agreement and brought no public acknowledgement of a requirement to change from the club.”It’s a sham,” Rafiq told ESPNcricinfo. “We’ve waited a year for this report and they are still trying to bury it. Surely now is the time for the ECB to become involved?”The ECB’s own anti-discrimination code states that any alleged breach must be investigated and dealt with in a ‘timely’ fashion. Well, it’s been more than a year and no-one has been held accountable and nothing has changed. At some stage, the ECB need to act or, by passively accepting the situation, they are part of the problem.”Why are our politicians not stepping in to ensure this issue is investigated with the transparency it deserves? There’s a Test between England and India in Leeds next week. Do they want the issue of race hanging over it?”This has never been about money for me and it never will be. I want change. I want the next generation to be able to able to play cricket without the abuse I have suffered.”Nothing will get done if we leave it to the club. They wouldn’t have had an enquiry if the media hadn’t forced them into it. Now they’ll try to cover up the conclusions. They’ve had their chance. It’s time for the ECB and politicians to step in.”Yorkshire opened an investigation into Azeem Rafiq’s allegations of racism during his time at the club•Getty ImagesWhile the report is not understood to demand a change in the management of the club, the current incumbents are likely to come under enormous pressure in the coming weeks. One beacon amid the gloom is Roger Hutton, who was appointed as the club’s chair less than 18 months ago, who is not criticised in the report and has emerged as someone determined to improve the club’s record in this area. He is understood to be frustrated by the club’s intransigence and considering his own position.Yorkshire’s issue is that the enquiry – which they claim was independent, but was actually paid for by the club and carried out by individuals chosen by the club – has none of the power of a judicial review. As a result, individuals cannot be named without risking the possibility of legal action. It is understood the terms of reference of the review allow the club’s lawyers to redact any details – including names – which they see fit.Ian Watmore, ECB chair, said: “We respect the independent process behind the review, and the Club’s legal responsibilities to all parties. We also understand the frustration at the length of time this investigation has taken.”Now that the Club has a full copy of the report, we have today written to Yorkshire to formally request a copy, together with a timeline for publication.”It has taken considerable courage for Azeem Rafiq to speak out, and it is right that his experiences should have been thoroughly investigated. We now look forward to receiving a copy of the report promptly to enable us to fulfil our role as the ultimate regulator of the game.”

A new generation of talent is emerging behind Messi and his eternal rival Cristiano Ronaldo, with 17-year-old wonderkid Yamal very much part of that group. He is already a European Championship winner with Golden Boy and Kopa Trophy triumphs to his name.

WHAT GAVI SAID

Fellow La Masia academy graduate Gavi holds Yamal in the highest regard, telling reporters after seeing the youngster star again in a Copa del Rey win over Real Betis: “For me, he’s the best in the world, only behind Messi. Lamine is very talented, the best right now. But it’s foolish to compare him to Messi because there will only ever be one Messi. He’s unique, just as there will only be one Xavi, [Andres] Iniesta, or [Sergio] Busquets. We have to carve our own path.”

Yamal has been eager to distance himself from the Messi comparisons, as he seeks to become a legend in his own right. He will, however, continue to generate such talk for as long as he dominates games in a manner similar to Barcelona’s greatest ever player.

McKenna must unleash "terrific" Ipswich ace to make Phillips even better

Ipswich Town have made a solid start to life in the Premier League. Many people, including BBC Sport’s chief football writer Phil McNulty, believed the East Anglian outfit would finish bottom of the table, and return to the Championship. McNulty claimed it would be ‘some feat if they stay up’ this season.

So far, however, the Tractor Boys are defying all the odds, sitting in 15th with four points from their opening six games, drawing each of their last four outings. Their most recent result was a 2-2 draw against Champions League outfit Aston Villa, an excellent result at Portman Road thanks to two goals from Liam Delap.

There have been some standout players for Kieran McKenna’s side so far this term as they look to battle relegation. One of their most important players has been Manchester City loanee Kalvin Phillips.

Phillips game in numbers vs Villa

It was a massive coup for Ipswich to be able to bring in a player with as high a reputation as Phillips in their first season back in the top flight. Although his time at the Etihad Stadium has not quite worked out, he is still a high-quality player and joined the Tractor Boys on a season-long loan to help with their survival quest.

After taking time to bed into the squad, Phillips has now played three games in the Premier League, starting in them all. He got 90 minutes under his belt away to Brighton and Hove Albion in the 0-0 draw at the Amex, a superb result for the East Anglian outfit.

His best performance in the blue of Ipswich so far came against Villa on Sunday afternoon at Portman Road. The England international completed 69 minutes against Unai Emery’s side and was superb in and out of possession.

He looked much more like the player we saw at Leeds United, constantly involved when his side had the ball. According to Sofascore, he completed 82% of his passes and an impressive five out of seven long balls. The midfielder also won seven from eight ground duels, working hard out of possession.

Phillips is looking as close to his best as he has done since joining Pep Guardiola’s side in 2022. There is one player in the Ipswich squad whom McKenna could unleash to make him perform at an even higher level. That player is Ben Johnson

Why Johnson should start vs West Ham

There might not be a game in which Johnson is more desperate to start this season than his side’s clash on Saturday afternoon. The Tractor boys travel to London for the first time this season and will face the Englishman’s boyhood club, West Ham United.

The Hammers’ loss was Ipswich’s gain over the summer after Johnson left the club on a free following the expiration of his contract at the London Stadium. He made 109 appearances for the club, scoring and assisting two goals apiece. McKenna’s side swooped in to sign him for nothing, an astute pick-up.

According to football scout Antonio Mango, the Ipswich number 18 is a “terrific” player, who is capable of playing multiple positions. He has so far started just one Premier League game, a 4-1 loss away at the Etihad Stadium, and has featured off the bench in two other games.

His versatility and technical quality speak volumes. A right-back by trade, the former West Ham man found himself starting in multiple roles for the Hammers. He possesses the quality on the ball required to invert in midfield from right-back and even started in the middle of the park under David Moyes.

Chalkboard

Football FanCast's Chalkboard series presents a tactical discussion from around the global game.

Unleashing the Hammers academy graduate at right-back ahead of Axel Tuanzebe, who himself has impressed this term, could enhance Ipswich, and Phillips’ performances further.

The pair were teammates last term at the London Stadium, during Phillips’ loan spell. Not only would it raise the technical floor in midfield, always an important factor, but it could even reduce the defensive responsibility on the former Leeds midfielder.

With a more defensive-minded player next to him, Phillips could look to carry the ball further forward and impact the game in the final third, showing off the ability he has in possession even more.

It could well be a masterstroke from McKenna, adding greater balance and technical quality to their side and allowing one of their most talented midfielders a licence to go play higher up at times. Only time will tell if the Northern Irishman makes the move, but unleashing Johnson could be a superb decision for the Tractor Boys.

Talks back on as Man Utd in contact with "exceptional" Ten Hag replacement

Manchester United are back in contact with a potential Erik ten Hag successor as they look to plan for all eventualities, it has been claimed.

Erik ten Hag running out of time

It is no secret that Ten Hag is under massive pressure at Old Trafford, just months after signing a new deal with the Red Devils.

If the FA Cup win against Manchester City papered over cracks in his management, playstyle and results, then the opening part of the 2024/25 Premier League campaign has widened those cracks to chasms.

Man Utd ace who left for only £16m is now outperforming the whole club

Rasmus Hojlund and Joshua Zirkzee have struggled at Manchester United this season.

ByMatt Dawson Oct 14, 2024

His return of eight points in seven games is the worst in Manchester United’s Premier League history, breaking a record he himself set 12 months ago, a clear demonstration that his side are going firmly in the wrong direction.

Currently 14th in the Premier League, Manchester United have won just twice and for his side’s most recent 0-0 draw with Aston Villa he dropped almost all of the signings he has made to date, with Lisandro Martinez, Manuel Ugarte, Casemiro, Matthijs de Ligt, Joshua Zirkzee and Antony all among the substitutes.

Clearly, a decision has to be made soon as United’s early blip threatens to derail their season, and now it seems that the United hierarchy are sounding out replacements once more.

Man Utd back in contact with "exceptional" manager

Now, TBR report that Manchester United have reopened contacts with free agent manager Thomas Tuchel as INEOS are “drawing up contingency plans” should they decide to sack Ten Hag.

Thomas Tuchel

The former Chelsea man, dubbed “exceptional” by Sky Sports presenter Dougie Critchley on X, has been out of work since he was sacked by Bayern Munich at the end of last season and was strongly linked with the Manchester United job over the summer.

Now, it has been reported that talks are back on, and that “Tuchel’s people have had contact once again” from the Red Devils as Ten Hag remains under scrutiny.

On paper, it would certainly be an upgrade; during his time in the Premier League, Tuchel’s Chelsea averaged more points per game, more goals scored, and fewer goals conceded than Ten Hag’s time at Manchester United has currently produced.

England role complicates Man Utd move for Tuchel

One thing that may have prompted a resurgence in talks between Manchester United and Tuchel is the potential vacancy to manage the England national team, with the German firmly in the frame for the job.

Current interim boss Lee Carsley has done little to suggest that he wants or deserves the role on a full-time basis, and German outlet Bild report that Tuchel is “in talks to become the next England manager”, which would prevent him taking up the post at Old Trafford.

The role has been vacant since Gareth Southgate’s departure after a second consecutive EURO final defeat, and the FA will be looking to fill it in the not too distant future, which could leave Tuchel with a choice to make on his future.

For his part, he is thought to be keen on the Manchester United role, but they may have to move quickly to ensure his head isn’t turned by the lure of the Three Lions.

Anjum Chopra: India need more support for Goswami

Former Indian captain says India haven’t addressed the long-standing issue

PTI23-Sep-2021The lack of quality pace-bowling support for veteran fast bowler Jhulan Goswami remains a matter of concern for the India women’s cricket team, thinks former India captain Anjum Chopra.Regarded as one of the greatest fast bowlers of all time in the women’s game, Goswami began her international career nearly two decades ago and, at 38-years-old, is still among India’s frontline pace options.”No bowler to complement for Jhulan… that’s been there for a long, long time,” Chopra told PTI. “That remains a concern for the team, to not have a supporting role alongside Jhulan Goswami. Whereas many teams are looking to field three seamers, we are struggling to field two.”Shikha Pandey was not picked for [the series against] South Africa but went to England [earlier this year]. Meghna Singh is there… it’s also about taking those chances for the players.” Twenty-seven-year-old Singh, a fast bowler, is one of three uncapped players included in the India squad for the ongoing tour of Australia. The Indian team management, including head coach Ramesh Powar and batter Smriti Mandhana, have recently stressed on regularly scoring 250-plus in ODIs, and Chopra said it would take work.”A 250-run target doesn’t happen overnight, we need planning, preparation and skill level to get there. It can be 250-plus, 300 or 350. 250 is now a par score as women’s ODI scores have become higher over the past few years,” Chopra said.Chopra, who was the face of women’s cricket in India and played in six World Cup finals, said she wasn’t thinking too far ahead when asked about next year’s ODI World Cup. India are currently touring Australia, where they are engaged in a series comprising three ODIs – Australia won the first one by nine wickets – three T20Is, and a one-off day-night Test.”The series against Australia has just begun, there are a number of matches to go. World Cup is still far ahead. It’s anybody’s game in the World Cup. The World Cup is the next big tournament and all the preparation is towards that. You need game time towards enhancing yourself.”

Al-Nassr looked the more dominant side right from the off as Stefano Pioli handed Jhon Duran his debut in the AFC Champions League fixture. Duran, who completed his big-money move from Aston Villa to the Saudi Pro League side last week, was paired alongside Cristiano Ronaldo in attack.

The Saudi giants broke the deadlock in the 25th minute courtesy of a long-range strike from Ali Alhassan some 25 yards from goal. Minutes before the half-time whistle, Al-Nassr were awarded a penalty after Sadio Mane's header hit an opposition defender's hand inside the box. Ronaldo took the spot-kick and comfortably found the back of the net to double his team's lead before the break.

Al Wasl desperately tried to pull one back as they dominated proceedings at the start of the second half, however, Ronaldo completed his brace in the 78th minute against the run of play to secure all three points for his side. Mane chased a through ball down the left side before floating in an inch-perfect cross for the Portugal legend to head home. In the dying moments of the game, second-half substitute Al Fatil scored a fourth goal to ensure a dominant victory for his club.

It was Ronaldo's night as the Portugal icon's brace helped Al-Nassr clinch a comfortable win in the AFC Champions League. The veteran forward, who will turn 40 in two days, remained active on the pitch throughout the game and constantly posed a threat on the opposition box.

Al Wasl defender Salem Al Azizi was at fault for conceding the penalty right at the stroke of half-time which allowed the opposition to head into the break with a two-goal cushion. Al Azizi kept his right arm extended as he tried to mark Sadio Mane inside the six-yard box and the ex-Liverpool star's header ended up dropping onto his arm.

Wolves have a dream Kilman replacement in "quality" star who’s out on loan

The past two summers have been frustrating for Wolverhampton Wanderers. The Old Gold have lost several important players, and whilst they have gained a significant sum of money for each of those departed stars, it has certainly had a negative impact on the Midlands club.

In the summer of 2023, Wolves lost Ruben Neves to Saudi Arabia and Matheus Nunes who joined Manchester City. More recently, in the 2024 summer window, Pedro Neto joined Chelsea and, significantly, Max Kiliman left for West Ham United.

Max Kilman for Wolves

It was the latter departure, for £40m, which has had a big impact on Gary O’Neil’s side this term. Without Kilman at the heart of their defence, the Molineux outfit have been defensively shambolic.

Wolves’ defensive stats 2024/25

It has been a very disappointing campaign so far for the Old Gold, but they have been especially underwhelming at the back. Of course, that is partly due to Kilman’s departure. Not only was he club captain, but an ever-present last term as they kept five Premier League clean sheets.

Max Kilman

This term, however, the Old Gold find themselves sitting at rock bottom of the table, conceding the most goals in the English top flight, with 21. In fact, Carlisle United, who are bottom of League Two, are the only side in the 92 who have conceded more goals, letting 23 in so far.

Concerningly for O’Neil, his side are not actually bottom when it comes to expected goals against in the Premier League this term, as per Understat. There are actually three sides ahead of them in that respect; based on the metric, Wolves have just 15.18xGA this term.

They have been equally poor when it comes to their defensive record both at Molineux, and away from home too. They have already conceded ten goals at home this term, and are a third of the way to last season’s tally of 30 already. That included a 6-2 home defeat to Chelsea. It has been a disastrous start.

It has been a desperately disappointing campaign for O’Neil’s team, affected by the loss of Kilman. Whilst they may go searching for a solution to their defensive woes this January, their answer could already lie at the club, in the form of a currently on-loan academy defender.

The Wolves star who could replace Kilman

The man in question here is exciting young defender Nigel Lonwijk. The 21-year-old hails from the Netherlands and has had first-team experience in his native country and in the football league.

Specifically, the youngster has had spells at Wycombe Wanderers and Plymouth Argyle and is currently on loan at Huddersfield Town.

This term, the young Dutch defender has started six out of seven League 1 games for the Terriers, playing 90 minutes in all but one of those, on his debut against Rotherham United. He has also featured in both EFL trophy games, starting and playing 90 minutes. He has been a crucial player for the Yorkshire outfit so far.

A tall defender who stands at 6 foot 3, he was given a glowing review by former Plymouth manager Steven Schumacher. He called the youngster a “real quality player”, claiming that he has a “bright future” in the game.

In the 2024/25 season so far, the centre-back has been impressive for Huddersfield, with the Terriers currently sitting in ninth in the table.

His Sofascore stats show just how well he has performed, averaging 4.3 ball recoveries per game and winning 71% of his duels.

It would certainly be a bold call for O’Neil to recall the youngster this winter. However, given his obvious talent and the fact he has experienced the rough and tumble of the football league, it could be a risk worth taking at the Old Gold look to have an uphill battle for Premier League survival.

Perhaps the Midlands side could have the perfect Kilman replacement already on their books.

Rashid Khan expects spinners to play 'huge role' at T20 World Cup

“As we have seen in the IPL, spinners have brought back their team in the game; I feel that will be same in the World Cup as well.”

Nagraj Gollapudi18-Oct-2021Afghanistan’s strike bowler Rashid Khan believes the 2021 T20 World Cup could belong to spinners. Rashid, who will be playing his second T20 World Cup, said that the spinners are always “effective” on the pitches at three venues in the UAE, where the Super 12s, as well as the semi-finals and final will be played.”Conditions here are always good for spinners and it should be a spinners’ World Cup,” Rashid told . “Doesn’t matter how wickets are prepared here, it is always helpful for the spinners. Spinners will play a huge role in this World Cup. As we have seen in the IPL, spinners have brought back their team in the game. I feel that will be same in the World Cup as well. While his IPL franchise, Sunrisers Hyderabad, finished last on the points table, Rashid had another good season finishing with 18 wickets, the joint-highest for a spinner along with Yuzvendra Chahal and Varun Chakravarthy. Incidentally both Chahal and Rashid were among the top-10 wicket-takers even in the 2020 IPL which was fully played in the UAE as opposed to the just the second leg of the tournament this season.Overall in both IPLs in the UAE, the spinners have played a dominant hand at each of the three venues: in Dubai they have taken 30.8% of the total wickets taken, 30.1% in Sharjah, and 32.1% in Abu Dhabi. All these three venues will host the Super 12 matches as well, starting from October 23, along with the knockouts rounds. If the surfaces are to be on the slower side, Rashid felt a good spinner would always turn it to his team’s advantage. As an example, Rashid cited the low-scoring thriller in Dubai during the league phase of this IPL where Kolkata Knight Riders stuttered before eventually chasing down the Sunrisers’ 115-run target with two balls to spare. All the four spinners – Rashid, Chakravarthy, Shakib Al Hasan and Sunil Narine – played a key role for their teams making scoring difficult on a gripping surface.”On October 3, we played against KKR, they had around four spinners, all of whom bowled at an economy of 4-5 runs per over. Doesn’t matter whatever the kind of wicket is spinners are always effective in UAE conditions. At the same time we need to bowl well as well, it is not just enough to say everything will be done by the wicket. No, no, no.”According to Rashid, Afghanistan, who are in Group 2 along with India, Pakistan and New Zealand, would need to do “lots of hard work” considering all their opponents in the Super 12s are “good players of spin”. Afghanistan have played 14 T20Is at the three venues in the UAE and have won all of them.In the 2016 edition, Afghanistan progressed to the Super 10s’ stage, but could manage just a solitary win when they defended a 123-run target against the eventual champions West Indies.Rashid, who stepped down as captain on the eve of the World Cup, pointed out that for Afghanistan to do well this edition, the batters will have a big responsibility.”As long as you have a good total, if it is a slow track, skiddy, as a spinner it is very, very helpful because you can show your skills there and you can get the wickets. In this World Cup if you bat well, we [Afghanistan] can beat any side.”Read the interview with Rashid Khan

Ahead of United and Spurs facing each other in the Premier League on Sunday, Amorim suggested the pressure on him is far greater than Postecoglou is facing in north London, due to the differing expectations at either club.

AdvertisementAFPTHE BIGGER PICTURE

Ahead of the weekend, United and Spurs sat 13th and 14th respectively in the Premier League table. Neither club is having a good season, well below usual standards, and each manager has faced pressure on their jobs. But the spotlight is arguably greater on United given their record of success in the Premier League era, including multiple cups even in a relatively barren ten-year period, compared to Spurs not winning a league title since 1961 and only lifting one trophy this century.

WHAT RUBEN AMORIM SAID

Amorim said: "I can understand the connection between me and Ange, we have the same problems, but with all due respect I am in a bigger club with bigger pressure. Of course [I feel sympathy for him], especially because he's a good guy, a very good coach and he wants to play football in the right way. That, for me, is a very good thing. We know when we choose this kind of profession it's a lot of good things but then you have to feel that pressure when you don’t win."

The two managers will go head to head at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in Sunday's late afternoon kick-off.
