West Ham’s near-death experience should perk them up

West Ham play Astra Giurgiu night looking to exorcise the ghosts of a trip to Malta.

The Hammers narrowly avoided embarrassment on penalties last week as they went through at the expense of Birkirkara. This time Slaven Bilic will be hoping that his side manage to do a more professional job against the Romanian outfit this time around.

Last week’s jaunt to Malta was indeed a fiasco for the Hammers and their new boss, and the thought of not taking the chance to give their stately old Boleyn Ground a proper European send off this season is a horrible one. But the travails of last week might just be the tonic that forces West Ham into action.

For Premier League clubs in Europe, the qualifying rounds are very dangerous places. There isn’t much to gain – you already expect to be playing in Europe come September – but there’s an awful lot to lose. It’s not just going out of the competition early, it’s starting your season off in terrible fashion (just ask Hull how it worked for them), and it’s the pride lost, the fact that some minnows from a nation you didn’t even know played football slaughtered your side in full view of the whole world. Not even pulling a sickie will get you out of the workplace conversations about that one.

[ffc-gal cat=”west-ham” no=”5″]

Premier League clubs in the the qualifying rounds are like prize stallions, everyone wants to draw them and to see them in action, but everyone really expects them to wipe the floor with the opposition. So being dumped out in the qualifying round is a terrible thing to suffer.

But there are other things to take into account. For one thing, starting your competitive fixtures in mid-July is madness – there’s no time for a proper pre-season, the competitive European fixtures become more like friendly run-outs, and instead of travelling around Eastern Europe, your manager should be finishing up deals for new signings and getting things sorted for the rest of the season.  All of these things are factors in the fiasco endured by West Ham last week, but it might actually be a blessing in disguise.

Maybe West Ham will take the next few European tasks less lightly than perhaps they took the Maltese test. Maybe the Premier League stallion from East London will perk up a bit more at the thought of trips around the continent on Thursday nights. Maybe what West Ham went through in Malta was a footballing act of gingering, a cruel way of making a horse lift its tail high and perform better. It’s certainly not pleasant, but for West Ham it might just do the job.

With Bilic on the sidelines, looming large over the players and metaphorically wielding a big stick – or ginger root – they shouldn’t slip up. After coming so close to utter embarrassment at the hands of a team that are only charitably described as minnows, maybe West Ham will liven up and embrace the Europa League now.

Once bitten, twice shy, West Ham will not want to go through that again.

But relief now turns to action. It’s all well and good to talk about how the Irons can use that relief to spur them on, but now they need to actually do it. Like a man who has had a near-death experience, West Ham have pledged to turn their lives around and make every moment count, taking nothing for granted.

Two more ties to get through and West Ham will be in the Europa League group stages and it will be job done for now. They need to use Malta and the fear of failing to spur them on to victory night.

Maybe it will exorcise the ghosts of last week.

Emre Can shows Jordan Henderson isn’t Liverpool’s only option at the base of midfield

Safe to say, general opinions of Jordan Henderson on Merseyside have taken a downturn over the last few seasons, but particularly since Jurgen Klopp began to transform him into Liverpool’s anchor man.

The England international was never amongst the most riveting of footballers anyway, but the defensive midfield role has simplified his game to a glaringly monotonous level – one that has lead many Liverpool fans to ask what he actually contributes to the team, at least while on the pitch.

The overriding justification for Henderson’s continued presence, though, is the fact Liverpool’s only true out-and-out holding midfielder left for Lazio in the summer – ever-underrated Brazilian Lucas Leiva – rendering the Liverpool skipper the best-fitting square peg for a round hole. However, that’s not completely true – something shown by the 5-0 win over Swansea City on Boxing Day.

With Henderson injured, Emre Can took up defensive duties at the base of midfield and although Swansea offered incredibly little in terms of attacking verve, it was the German international who snuffed out the few advances they made on the break while keeping things tidy in possession.

Indeed, Can finished up with the most tackles of any player on the pitch, six, while winning two aerial duels, recording two interceptions and making the most touches of any Reds player excepting centre-backs Joel Matip and Ragnar Klavan.

It was a calm, calculated and committed performance from the 23-year-old, who Transfermarkt value at £19.8million.

So, Liverpool fans, who is the best option for the deep-lying role in Liverpool’s midfield? Let us know by voting below…

Lanzini & Arnautovic epitomise West Ham’s drastic improvements under David Moyes

To say David Moyes has had an instrumental impact on West Ham’s season would be a bit of an understatement. From his twelve Premier League fixtures in charge, the Irons have taken seven more points, scored seven more goals and conceded five goals less than they managed in their eleven games under Slaven Bilic at the start of the season. But more than mere statistics, the biggest positive is how the quality of football has vastly improved at both ends of the pitch – largely because Moyes is getting the absolute best out of West Ham’s most talented players.

And with no duo does that ring truer than Marko Arnautovic and Manuel Lanzini, West Ham’s biggest offensive and biggest creative threats respectively. Under Bilic, the pair found just one assist and not a single Premier League goal between them from a combined 13 outings. From their 22 with Moyes at the helm, on the other hand, they’ve netted eight times and laid on the same number of assists.

With Andy Carroll absent through injury, Arnautovic and Lanzini found themselves directly combining to great effect as a front two against Huddersfield on Saturday, in a performance that goes down as West Ham’s deadliest and most convincing yet during Moyes’ tutelage. Albeit capitalising on some criminal defending from David Wagner’s side, the Austrian and the Argentine bagged three goals and two assists, while taking five shots at goal, creating six chances and completing a whopping eight dribbles.

It was a fine counter-attacking performance from Arnautovic and Lanzini, but also one that highlighted the drastic improvements West Ham’s playing personnel have made since Moyes took charge. Back in October, Arnautovic was being lamented as the biggest flop of the season and Lanzini was struggling to produce consistently; now they’re arguably the most frightening double-act in the bottom half.

Bookies cut odds of Vardy to Everton, fans react

Both the January and summer transfer windows are commonly know as ‘silly season’ due to the bizarre and outrageous rumours that do the rounds.

This latest link may not be completely baffling, but some Everton fans are struggling to believe that the club will sign Leicester City striker Jamie Vardy.

Bookmakers SkyBet have shortened their odds of a deal to 8/1, making the Toffees outside favourites to nab the Premier League winner’s signature.

Vardy caught the attention of the football world when he scored 24 goals to help Leicester do the unthinkable and lift the league title.

Since then, the England international has been named in the media as a target for numerous clubs.

While there are no concrete suggestions that Everton are interested in Vardy, the bookies seem to think that it would not be hugely shocking if a deal was struck.

The betting market has certainly got the fans talking, with many of the Everton following expressing their thoughts on Twitter.

Newcastle United fans tweet thoughts on Schurrle speculation

Everton fans are unconvinced by Mangala after shaky debut

Everton found themselves in defensive chaos against Arsenal on Saturday, defeated 5-1 at the Emirates in the English Premier League.

Sam Allardyce’s team were no match for a resurgent Gunners side, undone by their new signings Henrikh Mkhitaryan and Pierre-Emerick-Aubameyang, alongside hat-trick hero Aaron Ramsey.

Toffees supporters were left fuming by the performance and had harsh words for the debuting Eliaquim Mangala, who looked lost in the Everton defensive line across the 90 minutes.

On loan from Manchester City, Mangala was theoretically brought in to improve the Everton defence but will need rapid improvement if he is to win over his new fans in the weeks and months to come.

It’s unlikely they’ll have to worry about relegation, but supporters expect them to compete with most of the teams in the top-flight given their transfer outlay over the last 12 months.

Can Mangala start to turn things around at home to Crystal Palace next week?

Hit or Miss? Everton’s signings under Steve Walsh

According to a from The Guardian published earlier this month, Steve Walsh’s tenure as Everton’s Director of Football could come to an end after just four transfer windows at the helm.

The last two have seen Everton shell out an incredible £200million, described by The Guardian as the costliest recruitment drive in the club’s history and the sixth-biggest spend of any team in Europe during that period, but the Toffees have suffered from an imbalanced squad – which many would argue was the underlying factor behind a torrid start to the campaign that saw Ronald Koeman dismissed in October.

Successor Sam Allardyce has weighed in as well, questioning the mental strength of the club’s signings and claiming they haven’t gelled as such an expensively assembled collection of high quality footballers should. Accordingly, Walsh’s position is said to be under review as criticism continues to grow.

But how many of Everton’s signings under Walsh have been complete disasters, and how many have actually proved to be good additions for the Mersyside club? We’re giving Toffees fans the chance to have their say on each acquisition by rating them as a transfer hit or a transfer miss…

Idrissa Gueye

The tough-tackling midfielder was snapped up from Aston Villa for just £7.1million following their relegation and has only rarely been left out of the starting XI when fit, particularly in the Premier League. But he hasn’t always protected Everton’s defence as well as expected and poor discipline has cost the Toffees dearly at times.

Dominic Calvert-Lewin

Arguably Steve Walsh’s best value-for-money purchase, Dominic Calvert-Lewin looks set for an incredibly bright future having already lifted the U20 World Cup with England and enjoyed runs in the starting XI under Ronald Koeman, David Unsworth and Sam Allardyce. He’s still lacking consistency though and has struggled to lead the line on his own at times.

Jordan Pickford

He’s been the undisputed No.1 since arriving at Goodison Park but Jordan Pickford’s performances have divided opinion. Even when bearing in mind the paltry efforts of those in front of him, the England international has conceded a staggering amount of goals, only keeping clean sheets in eight games. £25million is a heck of a sum to pay for a goalkeeper, especially one who appears perpetually hindered by his modest 6 foot 1 stature.

Ademola Lookman

Certainly an exciting asset but Ademola Lookman hasn’t quite made his way into the starting XI since arriving from Charlton Athletic in January 2017. Seemingly not content with a bit-part role on Merseyside, the promising winger is now on loan at Red Bull Leipzig for the remainder of the season.

Morgan Schneiderlin

A key player during Koeman’s time at Southampton, Morgan Schneiderlin had all the makings of a smart addition when he reunited with the Dutchman at Goodison Park. But the French enforcer has struggled for form – and even a place in the starting XI – and looks a shadow of the player who once earned a big-money move to Manchester United.

Davy Klaassen

Probably Everton’s biggest disappointment from the summer window. Davy Klaassen arrived with a preceding reputation from his time in the Eredivisie but has hardly made a mark on Merseyside, managing just 13 appearances across all competitions. Perhaps the Dutchman can fight his way back into the starting XI in time for next season, but it’s going to be a challenge.

Sandro Ramirez

He was one of the best strikers in La Liga last season but now finds himself loaned out to Sevilla after failing to fill Romelu Lukaku’s almighty void. Sandro Ramirez never looked like the right fit for the Premier League or Everton and there are understandable doubts over whether he has any future on Merseyside. On the other hand, the club will surely make a profit on his original transfer fee which was sourced through a cheap release clause.

Wayne Rooney

Wayne Rooney has been arguably Everton’s best player this season, albeit struggling to truly influence games at times, but his preference for the No.10 role has created an endless selection headache also involving Gylfi Sigurdsson and has been key to the imbalance within the squad. Aged 32 and certainly past his best, Everton’s short-term gain in signing Rooney as part of the Lukaku deal has created more significant long-term issues.

Cuco Martina

It’s pretty obvious Cuco Martina will never be the greatest full-back to grace Goodison Park but capable of playing on either side of the defence and picked up without a transfer fee, he’s proved a useful acquisition at times this season. Then again, the former Southampton man’s lack of quality has been painfully evident and clearly had an impact on Everton’s modest defensive record this term.

Gylfi Sigurdsson

We’re still waiting for Everton’s club-record signing to reproduce the level of form he showed at Swansea City, where his dead ball deliveries and finishes from long range kept the Welsh outfit in the top flight. That’s no doubt a consequence of how poorly assembled this Everton squad is though, rather than a question of the Iceland international’s ability, and most Toffees fans will be optimistic of seeing more from Gylfi Sigurdsson next season.

Nikola Vlasic

A relative unknown before Everton snapped him up from Hadjuk Split but Nikola Vlasic has shown real promise during his early outings for the Toffees, the 20-year-old impressing as part of both the midfield and the attack in different systems and under different managers. There’s still a long way to go but £10million is a modest investment for a promising young player in this day and age.

Ashley Williams

It’s safe to say Everton fans haven’t exactly warmed to Ashley Williams and his performances at times have been nothing short of catastrophic, with the Toffees often paying the price for the Welshman’s individual errors. But he wasn’t a particularly costly acquisition and has been involved in the most clean sheets of any signing under Steve Walsh – 24 from 71 appearances.

Cenk Tosun

Cenk Tosun was billed as the Romelu Lukaku replacement Everton failed to find during the summer but he’s endured a difficult start to life under Sam Allardyce, not being used in three of the six games he’s been available for since arriving at Goodison in January. The Toffees gaffer already appears unconvinced by the former Besiktas star.

Theo Walcott

A signing that appeared more Allardyce than Walsh-inspired, Theo Walcott’s enjoyed a strong start to his Everton career and has already given them some much-needed penetrative threat in attack. Toffees fans will be expecting a good end to the season too, with the England international’s place at the World Cup hanging delicately in the balance.

Michael Keane

Rated as one of the best defenders in the Premier League this time last season, Everton spent big on Michael Keane but are yet to truly reap the rewards. Injuries have been a factor too but the England international just hasn’t quite looked himself in Toffees colours and the form he produced for Burnley remains some way off. Nonetheless, Keane’s shown what he can do in the top flight and can still improve at 25 years of age.

In Focus: No surprise that QPR aren’t interested in selling Sean Goss

As reported by The Daily Record, Rangers boss Graeme Murty has been blasted by QPR manager Ian Holloway after admitting he would love to sign Sean Goss on a permanent basis.

What’s the story?

After another impressive performance in the Scottish Premiership this week, Murty admitted he would love to add Goss to his squad this summer, despite Queens Park Rangers’ insistence that he is not for sale.

That’s provoked a furious reaction from Loftus Road boss Ian Holloway, claiming Murty is ‘out of order’.

As quoted by The Daily Record, Holloway said:

I’d rather talk to Graeme about that myself because he is out of order talking about my player. He’s my player, nobody else’s. It’s not right he’s talking about trying to buy one of my players when that player is not for sale.

Strong words indeed and no doubt not great for Rangers fans who have been growing quite attached to the talented 22-year-old.

Is Goss worth the fuss?

It’s no surprise that Ian Holloway is feeling protective about one of his talents given the way he’s started his Rangers career. At QPR he struggled to make an impact, but is showing at Ibrox exactly why he’s been a highly-rated talent for a number of years.

He may not be the flashiest of players but he’s been a driving force in the heart of the Light Blues’ midfield, winning plaudits with supporters, some of whom have even dubbed him the best midfielder in Scotland.

Still improving with every game, he’s a valuable asset and not one that QPR are likely to give up cheaply. He was sent north of the border to get first team games under his belt and rather that it being a potential route to a Loftus Road exit, it appears the player is definitely in Holloway’s plans.

Everton fans react as club tweet asks if Cenk Tosun will score again this weekend

Everton Football Club posted a question asking if January signing Cenk Tosun will score again on Saturday on their official Twitter account on Monday, and Toffees fans were quick to react.

The £27m striker opened his account for the Merseyside outfit with a goal in his side’s 2-1 defeat against Burnley at Turf Moor last weekend having been handed his first start since January by manager Sam Allardyce, who continues to be an unpopular figure among the Goodison Park faithful.

The Turkey international, who had been desperate to make an impact for his new club, was then replaced in the 68th minute by Oumar Niasse, and he will hope that finding the net is enough to give him another opportunity when the Toffees host Brighton and Hove Albion on Saturday.

Everton supporters took to social media to give their thoughts on the question posed by the club, and while one replied “if fat Sam plays him”, another asked “can Sam Allardyce be sacked by Friday?”

Here is just a selection of the Twitter reaction…

West Ham United to freeze price of 2018-19 season tickets, fans react

West Ham United are in danger of dropping into the Championship, and even though the club do not yet know which division they will be playing in next season, they have taken steps with regards to season tickets.

In an announcement made via the club’s official website, the Hammers confirmed that the price of season tickets will not change for the 2018-19 campaign.

However, for holders in Band 5 there will be an increase from £289 to £320 for adults.

In most cases, this news would be met with happiness from the fans, but due to the club’s current predicament, the supporters are not thrilled.

Recently, the fans have been questioning the future of manager David Moyes, with some thinking that Fulham boss Slavisa Jokanovic would be a good replacement.

As it stands, the East London outfit are just three points above the relegation zone with nine games left to play.

To make matters worse, the club have suffered back-to-back 4-1 defeats, and they take on Burnley at the London Stadium this weekend in the hope of getting back to winning ways.
