Everton Keen On Deal To Sign "Appalling" £20k-p/w Defender

Everton are interested in completing a summer deal to sign West Ham United defender Ben Johnson, according to reports.

What's the latest on Johnson to Everton?

The Irons right-back is an academy graduate at the London Stadium having worked his way up through the youth ranks to become a regular feature of David Moyes' first-team squad, recording 83 senior appearances to date. However, the 23-year-old will be out of contract at the end of next season, meaning that he will become a free agent should he not be offered fresh terms to extend his stay by this time next year.

Claret and Hugh has reported that the E20 outfit were looking to negotiate a new deal with the Premier League starlet last Christmas, but decided to hold off due to the poor form he was displaying at the time in the hope that things would change for the better. But with that not being the case, the hierarchy are now open to offers during the upcoming window.

The Toffees were credited with a strong interest in the England U21 international back in January, with Sean Dyche claimed to have personally green-lighted a move, and despite a deal failing to materialise at the time, it sounds like the boss is ready to take a second bite of the cherry in the weeks and months ahead.

According to Football Insider, Everton remain "keen" to wrap up a deal with West Ham and secure the services of Johnson ahead of the 2023/24 season. The Merseyside outfit are set to enter the market for defensive reinforcements and have identified the £20k-per-week ace as a "top target".

Everton, who are "still in pursuit" of the full-back, believe that he is a "top-class operator" whose ability to play on both flanks makes him an "attractive" option for the board.

West Ham United defender Ben Johnson.

Should Everton make an offer for Johnson?

Johnson hasn’t featured in any of West Ham’s last seven Premier League games – being completely omitted from the squad for four of those, showing that he’s perhaps not good enough to warrant a place in the first team. Therefore, we think Everton should avoid this move at all costs.

The Europa League participant has made just 20 tackles since the start of the season, ranking him the tenth-lowest player for the Hammers, and going forward, he has recorded only one shot, which is the lowest of any of West Ham's outfield players to have featured this term, as per FBref.

With a meagre three goal contributions to his name in 83 senior appearances under Moyes, Johnson’s display against Brighton & Hove Albion last month saw him labelled “appalling” and “so far short of the quality required” by talkSPORT broadcaster Tom Rennie, and we do not believe he is the profile of player that Dyche should be looking to sign come the summer, regardless of the club’s league status.

Reporter Slams "Horrendous" Player vs Man City

Arsenal reporter Charles Watts criticised midfielder Thomas Partey for his role in Manchester City's opening goal at the Etihad on Wednesday evening.

What did Watts say about Partey?

The Gunners travelled to City looking to end their three-game run without a win in the Premier League and continue their push for the title, with Mikel Arteta giving Partey the nod once again in a three-man midfield alongside captain Martin Odegaard and Granit Xhaka. However, things didn't go to plan for the visitors, who found themselves a goal down early on after Kevin de Bruyne's early effort. John Stones doubled the home side's advantage just before the interval, with De Bruyne netting his second and City's third shortly after the restart and Erling Haaland scoring a fourth in injury time.Partey, who was making his 35th appearance of the season in all competitions, was criticised for his part in the opener, with centre-back Rob Holding also slammed in the media for his display, despite scoring a consolation goal late on.Watts took to Twitter to describe Partey's tracking of De Bruyne's run as "horrendous", adding that Aaron Ramsdale should also have done better with the shot. Members of the media also felt that Partey put in an "embarrassing performance" on the whole for a "fourth game in a row".

Arsenal's Aaron Ramsdale andThomasParteylook dejected.

How was Partey's performance?

It was certainly an evening to forget for the Gunners, with City now just two points behind the league leaders with two games in hand.As per SofaScore, Partey ended with a match rating of 6.7/10, slightly above Arsenal's player average of 6.48/10. The Ghanaian gave away possession on six occasions, committed three fouls and picked up a yellow card. However, he did make two tackles, registered a key pass, won eight of his 13 duels and completed 100% of his attempted dribbles. It wasn't a performance to shout about, but he did outperform a number of his teammates, but his action in City's opener is what led to plenty criticism from Watts.

Chelsea: Winless run slammed as ‘worst form ever’

Chelsea's current run of results under Frank Lampard is the worst form in the history of football, Paul Merson has claimed.

What's going on at Chelsea?

Lampard has lost all five games in charge as interim manager, despite the club investing heavily in the last two transfer windows, and he is the fourth head coach – permanent or temporary – Chelsea have had all season, after Thomas Tuchel, Graham Potter and Bruno Saltor.

With Chelsea still yet to reach 40 points and having to face Arsenal, Manchester United, Manchester City and Newcastle in their final six games, there is a real danger that they could finish the season even closer to the bottom three.

Chelsea have scored just once under Lampard, which was a deflected effort from Conor Gallagher in a game they eventually lost to Brighton, and there appears to be no solution in sight.

Speaking on Sky Sports, Merson claimed that given the level of investment into the squad, who finished third last season, this current dismal run is the worst seen at any level of football, as there are quality players in the side who are currently incapable of finding the back of the net.

"I'm not exaggerating here, this is the worst run in the history of football. And I know people will go 'oh, some teams have gone 25 games without a win like lower league or wherever or in other countries' – not with talent like this," he stated.

"When you've got talent like this, who are top international footballers, and you could put out two teams, and they're on a run like this, I would have to say it's the worst run in the history of football for the talent they have."

Can Chelsea recover next season?

Mauricio Pochettino is expected to take over from Lampard at the end of the season, and the club will hope that he can have more success than Potter in getting the best out of what is a sizeable squad.

The main problem in recent weeks has been a lack of goals, and without a recognised quality centre-forward, this could continue into next season if it is not addressed.

If Chelsea are able to trim their large squad and inject some proven attacking quality up front, then they may be able to get back on the right track, but it may prove to be a difficult job for Pochettino.

All of their managers have struggled with the heavy influx of signings this season, and a lot of departures may be necessary in order to keep control of the chaos within the squad.

There have been reports that the dressing room is too full, and it is impossible to give everyone their desired game time given how many players are currently in the squad.

Whilst there is quality within their ranks, it seems unlikely that their form will recover before Pochettino replaces Lampard.

BCCI opens application process for head coach

The BCCI has set June 10 as the deadline for interested candidates to apply for the role of India’s head coach

Selectors to pick Zimbabwe and West Indies tour squads on Monday

India’s selectors will meet on Monday in Mumbai to pick the squads for the tours of Zimbabwe and West Indies. Asked if senior players would be rested for the tour, BCCI president Anurag Thakur said the decision would be taken by Sandeep Patil-led selection panel. “Let the selectors decide that,” Thakur said. “Before any tour if any player wants to take rest they convey it to the BCCI and the selection committee. Even if the selection committee wants to experiment with new players they take the senior players into confidence.”

The BCCI has set June 10 as the deadline for candidates to apply for the role of India’s head coach. An interim coaching staff is likely to be put in place for the limited-overs series in Zimbabwe in June, with the aim of appointing new long-term coaches by the time Virat Kohli’s team reaches the Caribbean for a four-Test series against West Indies, scheduled for July-August.The contracts of team director Ravi Shastri, batting coach Sanjay Bangar, bowling coach B Arun and fielding coach R Sridhar – who had comprised India’s coaching staff since the ODI series in England in 2014 – expired after the World T20 in March. In 2015, the BCCI had appointed a three-man advisory committee comprising Sachin Tendulkar, Sourav Ganguly and VVS Laxman to look for a head coach. That panel panel was disbanded when Ganguly took over as president of the Cricket Association of Bengal. It is understood that the BCCI failed to find a suitable replacement for Ganguly, thus stalling the coach-selection process.”We will advertise for the post of coach today,” Anurag Thakur said at his first media briefing after being elected BCCI president on Sunday. “And by June 10 anyone who is willing to take up post of coach, they can apply to the BCCI. The candidate will be finalised after that.”Thakur said the BCCI was looking for a long-term coaching staff with the 2019 World Cup as the team’s main goal. “Currently our team is No. 2 in Test and T20, and No. 4 in ODIs and women’s cricket. We will take every step or whatever is possible to make Team India No.1 in all forms of cricket.”Asked to explain the delay in appointing a head coach, Thakur said: “If you have to go for the best you can’t go with limited choices. So we are keeping it open.”Thakur also said the previous members of the coaching staff – Shastri, Bangar, Arun and Sridhar – were all eligible to apply for the job. “Of course, yes. It is open for everyone whether [it is] the current support staff, [or] from outside India or within India, anyone who is keen to be a coach with Indian team or take other responsibilities – bowling, batting, fielding coach or the head coach – all these positions would be available.”Thakur also praised Shastri and his specialist staff, saying they had done a “good job in the past and the team had performed well under their leadership”.According to Ajay Shirke, who was appointed BCCI secretary during its special general meeting on Sunday, the BCCI’s call for applications was an extension of its recently launched “transparency initiative”. “We are just widening the net so that everybody feels they can be part of the Indian coaching staff if they are judged to be the best,” Shirke said.Asked if the team director’s position would be done away with, or whether it would remain in conjunction with a head coach and other support staff, Thakur said the BCCI would make a decision based on the number of applications it received. “Once we see how many people are interested in taking up that job, what is the talent available and who could be the best coach for Indian cricket team then you can take the final decision after that.”

Gary Neville Issues NUFC Warning Over PIF Report

Newcastle United have been warned by Sky Sports pundit Gary Neville amid the recent reports surrounding a potential move for Neymar in the summer.

Do Newcastle want to sign Neymar?

Defeat on the weekend has put the brakes on Newcastle's push for a spot inside the top four with Liverpool closing the gap down to just three points.

Eddie Howe's men will have the opportunity to potentially increase their margin back to six points when they play their game in hand over the Reds.

With the target now firmly set on playing Champions League football next season, the calibre of players being linked with a potential move to Tyneside has increased.

Indeed, reports are now claiming the Saudi-based owners would be keen on the possibility of bringing the Brazilian star, Neymar, to St James' Park.

There is the suggestion that Paris Saint-Germain could be open to the notion of selling Neymar in the upcoming summer window with Newcastle keen to add at left-wing.

However, speaking on his own podcast, Gary Neville has warned Newcastle that this may not be a possible signing which would benefit the club:

(23:05) "That would scare me to death, that sort of signing, not because I mean Neymar's a sensational player. But I think Eddie Howe all of a sudden would sort of have a circus. Eddie Howe doesn't need a circus up here.

"You know, you think about what Newcastle are at this moment in time they're building, they've got foundations, what you don't want to do is basically go and disrupt that."

"Eddie Howe and Dan Ashworth are going to have to be strong I think. They're going to have to be strong with the ownership who may want an acceleration [in calibre of signings]."

Should Newcastle sign Neymar?

The notion of signing a player of Neymar's calibre can potentially be viewed as the moment when Manchester City signed Robinho back in 2008.

It is a deal which perhaps not many people could see happening, but it would certainly put the Toon on the map when it comes to their ambition for the future.

The Brazilian is a player who has won enough trophies to fill out a number of cabinets from his time at Santos, Barcelona and PSG.

Newcastle manager Eddie Howe.

His ability on the ball is something which almost any club would welcome at their club with the Brazilian ranking inside the upper second percentile for shot-creating actions per 90 minutes (via Fbref).

Broadcaster Damien Bartonek has hailed the 31-year-old as a "magician" and it is clear to see why when he has provided over two (2.21) successful take-ons per game this season.

However, this is a player who could potentially bring a number of off-field issues to what appears to be a tight-knit Newcastle side.

The £946k-per-week star has reportedly not been shy of speaking his mind to senior officials at the club in front of the squad which is something which would surely rock the current Newcastle side.

Adding to his issues off the field, the Brazilian is not a player who has proven reliable on the pitch with yearly injury issues seeing him miss significant game time.

Of course, the signing of Neymar would be a real statement for Newcastle, but it could certainly present a host of issues too.

South Africa need win to stay in touch

South Africa need a win to keep pace with the West Indies and Australia as the triangular series moves towards its pointy end

Confident West Indies take on shaky South Africa

Big PictureA first-up win by West Indies over South Africa was something of a surprise, but their victory over Australia in St Kitts showed that Jason Holder’s side are genuine contenders for the triangular series title, particularly as injury worries have depleted both opponents. Having squandered a winning position against Australia, South Africa now find themselves in the unedifying position of needing to catch up with West Indies, on a small ground that clearly suits the block-and-bash style of Johnson Charles, Marlon Samuels, Kieron Pollard and others. In defeating Australia, West Indies ran up a mighty differential in fours and sixes – the hosts’ 32 boundaries towered over the 21 managed by the visitors. What’s more, Charles and Andre Fletcher reached the rope seven times inside six overs, before Usman Khawaja and Aaron Finch had done so even once. So it is clear that to restrict West Indies, South Africa’s pacemen and spinners need to find the right lines and lengths to jam their big hitters and prevent further barrages.A lack of batting depth and balance has been South Africa’s major worry for quite some time in limited-overs matches. While Quinton de Kock, Hashim Amla and AB de Villiers are undoubtedly world-class players, there is too little behind them to allow for freedom of expression. Amla has been outspoken in stating that the top four need to do the heavy lifting, and it will require partnerships of considerable heft to achieve that against Sunil Narine, who confused South Africa completely in scooping six wickets during their earlier meeting.Form guideWest Indies WLWLL (last five completed games, most recent first)
South Africa LWLWWIn the spotlight Even during West Indies’ warm-up matches for this tournament, Darren Bravo was making starts. Scores of 24, 21, 30, 19 and 39 suggest an engine that is revving up nicely without quite hitting the desired gear. Each of the three most recent innings have included the odd glorious stroke, followed by a dismissal at a time when Bravo should have been about to dominate. No one can question Bravo’s talent or commitment to his side but, after Marlon Samuels’ spinal innings against Australia on Monday night, the bar has been set for the kind of performance West Indies need from their left-handed No. 3.Much like Bravo, Quinton de Kock has made a trio of starts in his matches so far, without going on to anything substantial. Given the slowish conditions faced in the Caribbean, it is quite an advantage to be able to get started against the new ball, and a privilege de Kock has enjoyed without making the most of it. Additionally, given that South Africa’s batting lacks the depth of West Indies and Australia, there is more responsibility than usual on the top four to produce.Team news The combination that restricted and then defeated Australia on Monday should be set to turn out again, though Sulieman Benn did appear to pick up a niggle while fielding.West Indies (probable) 1 Johnson Charles, 2 Andre Fletcher, 3 Darren Bravo, 4 Marlon Samuels, 5 Denesh Ramdin (wk), 6 Kieron Pollard, 7 Carlos Brathwaite, 8 Jason Holder (capt), 9 Sulieman Benn, 10 Sunil Narine, 11 Jerome TaylorChris Morris is fit again and may press Kyle Abbott for his place. Morne Morkel is yet to play a game in the tournament.South Africa (probable) 1 Hashim Amla, 2 Quinton de Kock (wk), 3 Faf du Plessis, 4 AB de Villiers (capt), 5 JP Duminy, 6 Farhaan Behardien, 7 Wayne Parnell, 8 Kagiso Rabada, 9 Kyle Abbott, 10 Aaron Phangiso, 11 Imran TahirPitch and conditions The Warner Park surface is swifter than that of the Providence Stadium, but it showed signs of tiring during the previous match. It also took some spin in the evening.Stats and trivia West Indies last won consecutive ODIs when they defeated Pakistan and Zimbabwe at the World Cup in February last year West Indies haven’t won consecutive games against South Africa since an ODI series in the Caribbean in 1992Quotes “As a team we have always backed ourselves for somebody in the top six to take it through and bat as deep as possible. Obviously we are very disappointed after our last game. We got ourselves into a very good position to win it and we didn’t quite take it through.
“I think there can be a little bit of improvement. We are always looking to improve our fielding … and I think we are looking to improve on where we bowl in the first 10 overs and things like that.”

Man United Make Approach To Sign 23 y/o "Phenomenon"

Manchester United have reportedly made an enquiry to sign RB Leipzig defender Mohamed Simakan.

What’s the latest Man United transfer news involving Simakan?

The Red Devils appear to be on the hunt for defensive reinforcements this summer, with Napoli’s Kim Min-jae a target. Reports in recent days have claimed that United have now tabled a contract offer to the South Korea international following talks with his representatives.

However, with Erik ten Hag approving exits for Harry Maguire and Victor Lindelof and Eric Bailly also set to be sold, another centre-back could be required at Old Trafford, with Simakan seemingly another target.

Journalist Santi Aouna took to Twitter in the last 48 hours to provide an update he’s heard on Simakan. He said that the Red Devils have made contact for the Frenchman alongside Arsenal, while also name-checking the move for Kim.

“Understand Arsenal and Manchester Utd have enquired for Mohamed Simakan. Many English clubs are interested. Talks still ongoing between MU and Kim Min-Jae. The Red Devils have presented their project and also financial proposal.”

Mohamed Simakan

Who is Simakan?

Simakan is primarily a centre-back but can also play as a right-back or as a holding midfielder and appears to be at the top of his game with a career-high €28m Transfermarkt valuation.

The 23-year-old has been with Leipzig since 2021 after leaving Strasbourg and was hailed as a "complete centre-back" by football talent scout Jacek Kulig.

"One of the most underrated young defenders in Europe. Strong, fast, versatile, and very good on the ball. Complete centre-back who can also play as a right-back. Reminds me of young Lilian Thuram."

Simakan has played as a right-back and centre-back this season, contributing to an impressive 11 goals in all competitions. His versatility could therefore make him a shrewd signing at Old Trafford, possibly rivalling Kim, Raphael Varane and Lisandro Martinez at centre-back, while also providing cover at right-back and in midfield. It looks as if this could be a deal to keep an eye on, although the Red Devils may need to pip Arsenal to Simakan’s signature.
