Murali and SLC involved in war of words

SLC and Muttiah Muralitharan have traded caustic verbal blows following an altercation between Murali and the Sri Lanka team manager over Murali’s consulting role with the Australia side

Sri Lanka Cricket and Muttiah Muralitharan have traded caustic verbal blows following an altercation between Murali and the Sri Lanka team manager. SLC has made a formal complaint to Cricket Australia over the altercation, and has also contended Murali had conducted centre-wicket training at the Pallekele ground without permission. With consternation about Murali’s role as spin-bowling consultant with Australia already high at SLC, a rumour began to circulate that Murali had influenced the preparation of a turning pitch at the P Sara Oval for Australia’s practice match last week. Having represented Tamil Union Cricket Club for much of his career, the P Sara Oval was effectively Murali’s home ground. It is a venue where he commands substantial respect.Sri Lanka would have preferred Australia to play their practice match on a seaming deck at odds with the surfaces that would be prepared for the Tests. Yet, Australia spinners Steve O’Keefe and Nathan Lyon shared 12 scalps in that game, on a surface that had begun to take significant turn by day three.Having caught wind of the suggestion that he was responsible for the nature of that pitch, Murali said he confronted Charith Senanayake, whom he believed to be the source of the accusation. Murali denies having had any influence over the preparation of the P Sara pitch. Senanayake denies having sparked the rumour.”Charith has accused [me] and told the media that I have cut the grass on the pitch to help Australia’s spin bowlers to take the wickets in the three-day game. That’s a lie,” Murali said. “When I met him I asked him: ‘We played together and respected each other, why are you telling lies?’, he told me that they have just made an inquiry.”The Tamil Union wicket was made at the time by Janaka Sampath, who is the SLC board curator. They should clarify from him what actually happened, rather than going on rumour.”Tempers are understood to have spilled over during the exchange. SLC was eventually notified, and on Monday, its president Thilanga Sumathipala said the board was “deeply disappointed” by Murali’s actions and had lodged a complaint with CA.”There are two problems here,” Sumathipala said. “The first is that Charith Senanayake has made a complaint that he had been berated. The second is that a certain training session for the Australia players at Pallekele had been carried out without permission.”We’re very disappointed because Murali is a player the board spent a lot of effort saving. We saved him three times. From a professional standpoint, there is no problem with him working with the Australian team. But the issue here is an ethical one. We’ve named the trophy the Murali-Warne Trophy.”And I remember once when we went to Kandy with Murali, he was on a truck and there was so much support for him that it took four hours for him to get home. Kandy is his hometown, and he’s now had to coach an opposition team at Pallekele. Regardless of professionalism, we’re very hurt by this.”SLC vice-president Mohan de Silva attempted to calm tensions, stating the board had not lost respect for Murali, but others within the cricket establishment had continued to express their dismay. When Sri Lanka’s sports minister also expressed “disappointment” over him taking the Australia job, Murali reacted by admonishing the board for casting aspersions upon his “ethics”, and drew attention to his substantial body of humanitarian work.”About two years ago, the board headed by Nishantha Ranatunga asked me to do some work with the spinners and I said yes, and I went and worked with the Sri Lankan spinners for 10 or 15 days,” Murali said. “Since then no Sri Lankan board has asked me to do any job. If they had asked me before the [Australia] series to be a consultant, I would have said yes. They didn’t want me, and someone else wanted me. How could I be a traitor to this country? Australia asked me to coach for the entire series, but I told them I can only do 10 days because I don’t want to be in the opposition dressing room during the match in Sri Lanka, that’s not ethical.”Sri Lankan people have done a lot for me, and I think I have done a lot for them as well. Along with a friend I’ve opened the Foundation of Goodness, where every year we help 50,000 families. We built 1000 houses after the tsunami. Cricket-wise, through the foundation, we made about 30-40 wickets in the Northern and Eastern provinces. We hold an annual reconciliation tournament. We do more than what Sri Lanka Cricket does, with our own funds.”Murali said Sri Lankans pursuing coaching opportunities with other countries was a result of their being unfairly treated by the SLC.”These people who are accusing me should go and look in the mirror [and compare] what they are doing to the country and what I am doing. The other fundamental wrong is that when our players become brilliant coaches, the board chases them off. I’m talking about Chandika Hathurusingha, Chaminda Vaas, Marvan Atapattu, Mario Villavarayan, and Thilan Samaraweera, who went to Australia. These people are all working in different countries where they are valued more than they are here.”What we do is bring all the top coaches from abroad when we already have the talent. We are not using it. Am I the traitor or are they the traitors? When they pay also – the foreign coaches are paid so much more than the Sri Lankan coaches.”Murali was also incensed by how much had been made of his association with Australia in particular, a role which he felt offered personal vindication given his travails in Australia during his career. He had initially worked with the Australia spinners during a series in the UAE in 2014, before being approached again ahead of this series.”I know in ’95 and ’96 I had problems against Australia, and the whole of Sri Lanka backed me. I thought that when Australia asked me to coach, that’s them saying that I don’t do anything wrong – that I am correct and they were wrong at the time. That’s their proving it by asking me to train their spinners.”Does SLC think that just because I coach Australia for 10 days, Australia will win? If that’s the case I am the best coach in the world, and Sri Lanka should hire me every time, and we will win every time.”Former Sri Lanka captain Kumar Sangakkara tweeted in support of Murali on Monday evening. “Murali is a great son of Sri Lanka and he doesn’t have to defend himself. He loves his country,” Sangakkara wrote. “He is free to consult or coach anyone. If SLC had ever asked him to coach Sri Lanka, he always will. His consultancy with anyone is a way he can give back to the game.”He has given his best to his country on the field and off. He is always available for his country, all they have to do is ask. We [should be] proud of him. If any Sri Lankan spinner walks up to [Murali] and asks him about bowling, he will be the first to spend as much time as needed to help. Free.”

Liverpool "Will Be There" To Sign £153k-p/w "Top Talent"

Liverpool “will be there” to sign Bayern Munich midfielder Ryan Gravenberch should he become available during the upcoming transfer window, according to journalist Fabrizio Romano.

Is Ryan Gravenberch leaving Bayern Munich?

The Netherlands international only arrived at the Allianz Arena last summer and has made 32 appearances during his debut season, but despite his contract still having another four years remaining, he’s only recorded two starts in the Bundesliga so could be looking to seal a switch away that will give him more regular game time.

Back in April, 90min reported that FSG and Jurgen Klopp had asked to be given updates on the 21-year-old’s situation, before The Mirror claimed that the hierarchy had already held a positive meeting with their target’s representatives, including his father.

Since then, TuttoMercatoWeb have suggested that the Reds have submitted a proposal for the maestro and would be willing to “shell out” €50m (£43m) to secure his services, and an update on both parties’ stance has now been revealed.

Are Liverpool signing Gravenberch?

Speaking to GiveMeSport, Romano stated that Bayern currently aren’t open to letting Gravenberch go, but if they happened to change their mind, Liverpool would be waiting in the wings to swoop in and bring him to the Premier League. He said:

"They don't want to negotiate at this stage, so if at some point this summer, Bayern will decide to put him on the market and to negotiate, Liverpool will be there for sure. Otherwise, I think it's going to be complicated because, as of today, Bayern have no intention of opening talks."

Bayern Munich midfielder Ryan Gravenberch.

Liverpool are reportedly closing in on the signing of Brighton and Hove Albion midfielder Alexis Mac Allister, but Gravenberch is another name that appears to be on the central shortlist so he could follow in his footsteps to make the imminent transition to Anfield.

The 6 foot 3 “top talent”, as lauded by football scout Jacek Kulig, is naturally stronger in the attacking aspect of his game having posted 69 goal contributions (36 goals and 33 assists) in 220 appearances throughout his career, not to mention that he also ranks in the 96th percentile for shot-creating actions so is a real threat going forward. And, Rafael van der Vaart has even said that the midfielder is better than Jude Bellingham "in every way".

The Amsterdam native, who is pocketing £153k-per-week and has the flexibility to operate in five different positions, will additionally know what it takes to compete and be successful at the highest level having won eight trophies since bursting onto the scene for club and country, so he’d be able to match the winning mentality of the current squad already on Merseyside.

Rangers Could Sign Goldson Heir In 6 ft 6 Titan

Michael Beale faces a crucial summer transfer window in charge of Glasgow Rangers as they look to wrestle back the Premiership title from their Old Firm rivals.

Beale’s two January signings, Nicolas Raskin and Todd Cantwell, have enjoyed positive starts to life at Ibrox – having been "playing well" , according to their manager – and if there are a few more signings like this during the summer, the majority of the supporters will be happy heading into 2023/24.

There could be moves for players across all areas of the pitch and Danish centre-back Thomas Kristensen has been touted for a switch, according to Danish outlet BTSporten (via the Scottish Daily Express), as the Gers have ‘watched’ him in the hopes of luring the player to Scotland.

Aged just 21, he has plenty of years left in the tank and over time, he could certainly become the ideal heir to Connor Goldson at the heart of the defence.

Could Rangers sign Thomas Kristensen?

Goldson has been a mainstay in the first team since joining in 2018, missing only 14 games through injury or illness, although 11 of those have come this season and with the defender looking like he will miss the last few matches of this term with a hip injury, Beale may surely look to the market for a prospective heir for the Englishman.

He won't be going anywhere, anytime soon, especially with three more years on his contract, however, the niggling injuries this term may go on to have a detrimental effect over his next few years in the game.

Journalist Barry Anderson dubbed Kristensen as “one of several young players with potential on their radar” when the club were first linked with the defender, suggesting Beale is looking at building his team with an influx of young talent.

The 6 foot 6 colossus has enjoyed a solid campaign for Danish side AGF, averaging a Sofascore rating of 7/10 across 20 Superliga matches, while he has won 59% of his total duels (4.2 per game), made 3.5 clearances, 1.9 interceptions and 1.3 tackles per game along with taking 64.7 touches each match, suggesting that he is extremely comfortable on the ball and is strong in the tackle, winning more duels than he has lost.

Rangers managerMichael Beale

The towering Dane ranks first in the squad for interceptions, second for clearances and seventh for tackles per game this season, underling how important he is to the side despite his tender age.

Moving to Scotland certainly wouldn’t faze him given his contributions for AGF this season and Beale could well uncover an ideal Goldson heir in the process.

Northants defy off-field troubles to extend T20 dominance

Such is Northants’ dominance in T20 cricket this year that it might take until the winter for them to face a real challenge.Certainly they encountered little resistance at Edgbaston. Although the teams went into the match equal on points at the top of the North Division, Birmingham were 25 for 5 after 37 deliveries and there is no way back from that. It’s a little premature to suggest Northants have one foot in the quarter-finals, but they are very handily placed. But, by the time winter comes, the discussion over the future shape of the domestic T20 tournament will be coming to fruition. As things stand right now – and these things change like manifesto promises – the most likely result of those discussions is a two-division competition involving all 18 first-class counties and a system of promotion and relegation. It could start as early as next year, though 2020 and the advent of a new TV deal remains a more likely timeframe. The broadcasters would focus on the top division.Which all sounds pretty simple, doesn’t it?Except such is the desire to ensure the product – yes, it’s a horrible word, but we have to be realistic – looks right, that the argument over how to populate the top division could become complex. While you might think that simply picking the quarter-finalists of the previous season was the most meritocratic solution, there are those who think the division should be decided by ground size. That way, they argue, the product will appear more glamorous on TV and the potential for extra revenue from ticket sales increases. It is, in essence, a way of introducing city cricket through the back door. But if the new-look competition does start next year Northants, in particular, cannot be denied. So consistently impressive has their T20 form been over the last few years – they won the competition in 2013 and reached the final in 2015 – that any formation that does not include them (and the other ‘small’ counties who are out-performing their city neighbours with big grounds and even bigger senses of entitlement) will lack integrity. Merit must remain the only method for qualification.A similar discussion occurred ahead of the first year of the Premier League. Cambridge United were, at the time, the club with the small stadium that threatened to win promotion. As it was, they fell away and most of their best players were cherry-picked by bigger clubs. Northants supporters will be familiar with the sensation.Northants do have an issue with ticket sales, though. While Surrey, who could find themselves in the lower division, have sold 122,247 NatWest Blast tickets this season, Northants have sold just 16,477. Not for the first time, the cricket side of the club is being let down by the business side.Ticket sales have fallen off drastically around the country in the last couple of weeks. From a high point, a month ago, where they were up 26 percent on 2015 levels (which was, in itself a record year), the relentlessly wet weather (and, perhaps, the rival attraction of the football) has reduced this figure to 8 percent. The plan to start the competition several weeks later in 2017 may help, but the last few weeks might prove a reminder that, if this competition is held in a window, it is a hostage to fortune. It could be ruined by a spell of wet weather the like of which we have just experienced. What Northants provide – in T20 cricket, at least – is a glorious reminder of the ability of sport to transcend financial muscle. So here, despite fielding a makeshift opening attack of part-time pros (Richard Gleeson combines his playing role with a community coaching role at the Lancashire Cricket Board, while Moin Ashraf has been signed on a short-term contract to cover for injuries to Rory Kleinveldt and Stone), they thrashed a side with a budget the like of which they can only dream.Birmingham, remember, have such a strong squad that they feel able to leave out players of the class of Varun Chopra (who scored an unbeaten 97 in his only T20 innings this season) and Jonathan Trott (who remains the highest T20 run-scorer in the club’s history, despite hardly having played for several years). Indeed, if you added up the salaries of those left out – and you could include Boyd Rankin, Tim Ambrose, Ian Westwood, Keith Barker and Chris Wright – it might not fall far short of the entire Northants’ salary bill. The better side won here. While Northants produced some moments of great skill – Richard Levi seemed to defy gravity as he leapt high into the air to take as sharp a slip catch as you could wish to see to dismiss Laurie Evans – Birmingham had what might politely be called a shocker: Jeetan Patel’s drop at cover to reprieve Josh Cobb on 1 was museum-quality awful.Perhaps they were a little unfortunate. Batting first on a pitch that had been under cover for much of the time since it was used for last week’s ODI, Gleeson gained just enough movement to trouble the batsmen. Luke Ronchi edged a beauty that left him, Ian Bell missed one that may have nipped in and Sam Hain, frustrated at his lack of progress, top-edged a desperate heave. Had the match not been reduced to 16 overs a side due to rain, Birmingham may well have struggled to see out their overs.Northants, recognising the tricky conditions, did not try to win with overs to spare. Instead Ben Duckett – a home-grown player who could well go on to represent his country – and Cobb, the third-highest scorer in the competition this season, played intelligent, mature innings. There were 21 balls to spare when Cobb clipped the boundary through mid-wicket that clinched the win. Cricket’s version of the Leicester City story continues.

Glamorgan run chase threatens Worcestershire promotion hopes

Worcestershire must overturn a Glamorgan run chase on the final day at New Road to keep their promotion challenge bouyant

Graham Wagg’s first five wicket haul of the season and a record-equalling performance by keeper Mark Wallace enabled Glamorgan to finally dismiss Worcestershire for 393 on day three of the Specsavers County Championship clash at New Road. But fine knocks from England Lions batsman Joe Clarke (98) and vice-captain Joe Leach (65 not out) enabled the promotion-chasing home side to set a 277 target although the pitch remains batsmen-friendly.Then Leach struck an early blow for the home side as Nick Selman was caught behind without a run on the board – his third successive duck as Glamorgan closed on 16 for 1Wagg finished with 5 for 90 from 33 overs of toil in the scorching heat while Wallace matched his own and Colin Metson’s Glamorgan record of nine dismissals in a see-saw match. However the individual highlight of the day was teenager Lukas Carey pulling off one of the catches of the season to deny Clarke a fifth first class century of the campaign. Clarke pulled a delivery from Wagg which looked to be sailing over the square leg boundary for six. But Carey, 19, stuck out his right hand and held onto the ball at full stretch on the edge of the rope to end Clarke’s fine knock. The home side had resumed on 150-2 – and within two overs had lost two wickets as Tom Fell and Tom Kohler-Cadmore were dismissed.Fell had failed to add to his overnight 65 when he drove hard at Wagg and nicked through to Wallace. Kohler-Cadmore completed a pair when he pushed forward to Michael Hogan and was also caught behind.Worcestershire, who trailed by 117 runs on first innings, were then effectively 35 for 4 but Clarke and Ross Whiteley responded with a fifth wicket stand of 104 in 36.1 overs.Clarke looked in particularly fine form until Carey’s stunning catch and Whiteley was dismissed in bizarre fashion by Wagg’s next delivery. The left hander ducked under a Wagg delivery but left his bat upright periscope-style and the ball ballooned off it into the hands of Wallace. Ben Cox and Ed Barnard were both trapped lbw to Craig Meschede and Wagg who completed a five wicket haul.Leach and Jack Shantry provided further resistance in a ninth wicket stand of 56 with the former going to his half century with a six over long-on off Owen Morgan.

Liverpool: £10m Beast Could Be Van Dijk 2.0 At Anfield

Liverpool are reportedly interested in signing Chelsea centre-back Levi Colwill this summer and the Englishman could be the next Virgil van Dijk in Jurgen Klopp's side.

Could Liverpool sign Colwill?

It was reported by Football Insider last month that the Reds were plotting to sign the 20-year-old after another fine season away from Chelsea, this time helping Brighton earn a spot in Europe for the first time in their history.

The talented young centre-back had first caught the eye on loan with Huddersfield Town in the Championship last season, helping the Terriers to the playoff final before their defeat against Nottingham Forest, making 31 appearances in the second tier.

Tottenham Hotspur and Manchester City are also credited with an interest in the Englishman, who could be the next top talent to leave Stamford Bridge without ever really getting a chance in the first team.

90min reported last year that Chelsea valued Colwill at £40m which suggests that nearly a year on, the Blues could demand a significant fee for the exciting defender this summer.

Does Colwill play like Van Dijk?

While the report suggests that Liverpool have been scouting Colwill throughout the season, Klopp got a first-hand experience of his quality earlier in the season when Brighton cruised to a 3-0 win over the Reds at the Amex Stadium.

Alan Shearer suggested that the youngster "didn't put a foot wrong" during Match of the Day's coverage, while his 7.5 Sofascore rating from the game suggests that he was easily able to deal with Liverpool's front two of Mohamed Salah and Cody Gakpo.

The former managed no shots on target and no successful dribbles when up against the Brighton loanee, in a display that was arguably reminiscent of Van Dijk's dominance over Premier League attackers in recent seasons at Liverpool.

Coincidentally, according to FBref, the Dutchman is the third-most similar player to Colwill when compared to other centre-backs across Europe's top leagues.

This season has seen the two register remarkably similar statistics with regard to 15-30 yard passes completed per 90 (both 39.2), aerial duels won (74.1% vs 74.2%) and tackles per 90 (both 0.6).

Colwill is clearly a defender who is comfortable in possession and is rarely bested by attacking players, as he has been dribbled past just 0.3 times per game in the Premier League so far this campaign.

If the 20-year-old can be brought to Anfield this summer, he could learn from Van Dijk and potentially emulate the Dutchman in the future, as he looks to have a huge amount of potential and is already very similar to a man recognised among the best centre-backs in the world.
