A report has shed light on Arsenal and their plans to cover for the injured Jurrien Timber, with news emerging on Man City defender Joao Cancelo.
Who will Arsenal sign?
The north Londoners have already sealed deals for goalkeeper David Raya, club-record signing Declan Rice, forward Kai Haverz and the aforementioned Timber – but an injury to the latter man could force them to dip back into the market.
Timber, who suffered an anterior cruciate ligament injury during Arsenal's opening game of the Premier League season last weekend, requires surgery and could even be out for around seven months.
The news comes as a hammer blow for manager Mikel Arteta who was set to benefit from the Dutch defender's real versatility as an inverted full-back, but it's now back to the drawing board for Arsenal's manager.
Arteta, in light of Timber's injury, has hinted to the press that his side could indeed look to the transfer market in search of a solution.
"It’s a huge blow, especially for him having just joined the club to have the injury that he has is a huge disappointment for him," Arteta said on Timber at his most recent media conference.
"It’s true that he was giving us very different things in terms of what we could do on both sides, but again, these things happen, and we have to be prepared for that.
"We are always open and we have to always be open to react if something happens, not only with an injury but with the market as well and that’s what we are doing."
Before the signing of Timber, City's Cancelo was heavily linked as a target for the full-back role, with reports previously suggesting that Arteta is a big admirer of the player.
Now, a fresh report has shed light on the situation as La Liga champions Barcelona chase a deal for the Portugal international.
Indeed, 90min claim "Arsenal have also now opened negotiations" for Cancelo, holding talks with the player's representatives, in a bid to beat Barca to his signing.
It is believed Arsenal "pose a threat" to Barca's transfer plans around Cancelo and this does indeed come following the Timber blow, as Arteta's men could "go back into the market" to find cover.
Any transfer for the City defender would be a loan, but Pep Guardiola and co are pushing for a mandatory buy clause of around £51 million to be inserted into the deal.
How good is Joao Cancelo?
The 29-year-old was once a mainstay and key player for Guardiola at Eastlands, having played a pivotal role during their 2020/2021 and 2021/2022 title-winning campaigns.
City legend Paul Dickov once called Cancelo one of the best full-backs in world football whilst lauding his "unique" style.

"He’s been outstanding. He’s assisting and scoring goals himself and for me he’s the best full-back, in terms of creating stuff, and how important he is to the team,” Dickov said.
"We’ve got some of the best players in the world in their positions and to not be relying on one player is remarkable. With the ability to finish too, that's unique."

Eu sou o presidente, enquanto eu for presidente, eu decido as coisas do clube – completou.
M Vijay and Virat Kohli added 283 for the third wicket, utterly dispiriting Sri Lanka until Lakshan Sandakan gave them something to cheer with two quick wickets late in the day
The Report by Karthik Krishnaswamy02-Dec-20172:12
Chopra: Vijay showed he’s India’s No. 1 opener
In deference to the Indian team management’s wishes, there was grass on the Feroz Shah Kotla pitch, but Virat Kohli, at the toss, wished there could have been more. It certainly wasn’t enough to turn New Delhi into Newlands, and India, instead of fighting for survival against snarling South African fast bowlers, settled into a typically subcontinental bat-first, bat-big pattern against a limited Sri Lanka attack, facing more spin (59 overs) than seam (31) on day one.For most of the day, Sri Lanka had nothing to cheer as M Vijay and Virat Kohli added 283 for the third wicket, their partnership an exhibition of relentless self-control and a hunger for runs that never tipped over into greed. India rattled along at more than four an over, and as the shadows lengthened, it seemed as if India would end the day only two down. But wristspin can do strange things, and Lakshan Sandakan, whose figures at that point read 20.5-0-109-0, sent down a deliciously-flighted wrong’un, slanting it across Vijay and asking him to reach out to drive. He didn’t pick the direction of turn, groped for the ball, and missed, dragging his back foot out of the crease in the process. Niroshan Dickwella, quick and nimble, did the rest.In his next over, Sandakan repeated the trick against Ajinkya Rahane. The line was a little wider this time, but again the ball landed on that perfect length, broke in the direction the batsman did not anticipate, and again Dickwella removed the bails with the batsman’s toe on the line. India had gone from 361 for 2 to 365 for 4. Sandakan, whose bowling until that point had made Sri Lanka yearn for the control of the absent Rangana Herath, was now doing what he had been picked to do.Still, this was India’s day. At stumps, Kohli was batting on 156, his third hundred in a row and the quickest – he only took 110 balls to reach three figures – of his 20 in Tests. In the process, he also became the fourth-quickest Indian batsman to 5000 Test runs, getting there in his 105th innings.Until the moment of Sandakan’s transformation, Vijay and Kohli had looked utterly secure. Aside from a couple of clearly not-out lbw shouts, their dominance had gone unchallenged, and, in an indictment of the two specialist spinners, the one bowler who had come remotely close to creating chances was the part-time offspinner Dhananjaya de Silva. On 122, Vijay drove early and sent the ball looping towards midwicket rather than the intended direction of cover; it fell just short of the diving Dinesh Chandimal. Then, on 154, he sent an uppish flick in the same direction. This time it eluded the fingertips of the debutant Roshen Silva. In between, de Silva also found Kohli’s leading edge, which fell between the bowler and mid-off.Bowling exclusively from around the wicket, de Silva ended the day with figures of 0 for 45 in 15 overs. Sandakan and Dilruwan Perera finished with a combined 3 for 207 from 44 overs. The foundation of Kohli’s innings was his supreme reading of the spinners’ length, and thereafter his footwork to pounce on marginal lapses. Before lunch, for instance, he took a massive stride out to a good-length ball from Lakshan Sandakan and bisected wide mid-on and deep midwicket with a whip of his wrists. On 68, he went the other way, deep into his crease, to shorten the length of an otherwise decent Dilruwan Perera delivery and bring his wrists into play once more to find the gap between short fine leg and deep square leg.For the quicker bowlers, a “good” length was a fairly small area on this pitch. When they strayed remotely off that area, Kohli and Vijay were quick to put the ball away. Vijay gave a good demonstration of this with a pair of boundaries in the 23rd over, off Lahiru Gamage: a cover drive, followed by a wristy on-drive, both off balls that were far from half-volleys. Kohli, meanwhile, raced from 43 to 55 courtesy three fours off one Gamage over, the pick of them an on-the-up drive through the covers.Vijay went to tea on 101, and resumed with a flurry of attractive boundaries – an inside-out cover drive off Dilruwan, a square-drive off Gamage, a reverse-paddle off Dilruwan. He would only hit one more four after that, though, as he took the singles on offer and made sure he would do everything in his power to keep his quest for that long-yearned-for maiden double-hundred alive. This time, it would really take a good ball to get him out. This hadn’t been true of Shikhar Dhawan and Cheteshwar Pujara, who both got off to breezy starts before falling against the run of play.Once it became clear there was little help in this pitch for the quicks, Dhawan and Vijay were quickly on their way, driving freely on the up and hitting eight fours in the first ten overs. Sri Lanka brought on spin as early as the eighth over, and Dilruwan continued to worry his team with his inconsistent lengths, Dhawan picking up two fours behind point in his first two overs. But he grew a little greedy, and picked out deep square leg with a top-edged sweep on 23. Suranga Lakmal briefly lost the ball in the hazy atmosphere, and lost a shoe while hurriedly changing direction, but managed to hold on.It was Dilruwan’s 100th Test wicket. He might not be the most frugal of spinners, but he has the knack of taking wickets – his 100th had come up in his 25th Test, and no Sri Lankan had got there quicker. Muttiah Muralitharan had taken 27 Tests. In walked Pujara, whose last four partnerships with Vijay read 107, 178, 102 and 209. They seemed to be continuing from where they left off in Nagpur, while scoring twice as quickly, and Pujara in particular was putting the bowlers through the shredder, hitting four fours in the space of three overs, including two back-foot whips off marginally short balls from Dilruwan. But this time, the partnership would only get as far as 36.Lahiru Gamage broke it, Sri Lanka profiting from the same plan that had brought them Pujara’s wicket in the second innings in Galle in late July. Then, he had flicked a full ball from Lahiru Kumara to leg gully. Now, he tucked one off his legs in the same direction, just uppishly enough for Sadeera Samarawickrama to take a sharp catch falling to his left.

West Ham are running out of time to complete some more summer transfer business, but journalist Fabrizio Romano has dropped a key update regarding potential incomings.
Will West Ham make more signings?
The Hammers are absolutely flying at the moment, sitting second in the Premier League table after picking up seven points from a possible nine so far this season.
Saturday's 3-1 victory away to much-fancied Brighton was a hugely impressive result for West Ham, having won by the same scoreline at home to Chelsea in the previous fixture, and things appear to be heading in the right direction.
While losing Declan Rice to Arsenal was disappointing early on in the summer, the east Londoners are spending those funds extremely wisely, bringing in Edson Alvarez, James Ward-Prowse and Mohammed Kudus, among other signings.
The hope is that more business will be conducted before the summer transfer window closes on Friday, though, and Sevilla striker Youssf En-Nesyri has emerged as a primary target.

Will West Ham sign Youssef En-Nesyri?
Speaking to Caught Offside, Romano claimed that En-Nesyri could still make a move to West Ham later this week, also providing an update on their pursuit of Ibrahim Sangare:
"It is true that En-Nesyri is one of the targets on West Ham’s transfer list for the remainder of the window. Talks are taking place to get the deal over the line but nothing is done yet as they are still negotiating while I’m writing.
"Sticking with West Ham, Sangare is a target for the Hammers but the player is on the transfer lists of many clubs, so it is not an easy one to get done at this stage."
This is another encouraging update from a West Ham perspective, with En-Nesyri someone who could make David Moyes' side even more formidable moving forward, having been a key figure for Sevilla.
The 26-year-old has scored 55 goals in 159 appearances for the La Liga, tasting Europa League glory with them twice in 2019/20 and 2022/23, not to mention netting 17 times in 61 caps for Morocco, including scoring twice at the 2022 World Cup.

Interestingly, Moyes has raved about En Nesyri in the past, speaking highly of him in a newspaper column during the World Cup, saying, "in Youssef En-Nesyri they have a centre forward who is an incredible good runner and gives them an outlet."
The fact that the West Ham boss singled him out suggests that he would love him at the London Stadium, and he has all the attributes to lead the line for years to come, acting as a long-term replacement for Michail Antonio.

His aforementioned goalscoring record for Sevilla shows that he can thrive in one of Europe's top league, with his international tally also outlining his pedigree, and if he ends up in a Hammers shirt, it would complete an excellent summer of transfer business, more than making up for the loss of the influential Rice.
Time is certainly running out if West Ham are to get their man, but snapping him up would be another signal of intent, with a European finish in the Premier League having to be the aim this season.

Liverpool's summer transfer window has not quite gone off without a hitch, with a mass midfield exodus now compounded by murmurings of Saudi Arabian interest in the treasured Mohamed Salah.
Alexis Mac Allister, Dominik Szoboszlai and Wataru Endo have been signed to restructure and revive the centre, but Jurgen Klopp's side still feels a little short in several departments.
While bolstering the left-back position might not be Liverpool's most pressing concern, it's certainly not out of the question for a bid to be lodged, with Juventus' rising star Andrea Cambiaso reportedly on the Reds' radar.
Are Liverpool signing Andrea Cambiaso?
That's according to Calciomercato, who claim that Liverpool – alongside Nottingham Forest and Tottenham Hotspur – are interested in signing the 23-year-old defender before the transfer window closes next Friday on September 1st.
Read the latest Liverpool transfer news HERE…
Intriguingly, Cambiaso can play both defensively and higher up the pitch, with his dynamism aligning with Klopp's affinity for flexible, multi-functional players.
The player is valued at £14m, as per Football Transfers.
How good is Andrea Cambiaso?
While Klopp's players are usually rigid in their role on the pitch, he leans towards these more 'dynamic' individuals to mould them to his own creation.
This can be said of Gini Wijnaldum, Roberto Firmino, James Milner; the list goes on, and Cambiaso, with his crisp passing, creativity and tenacity, might prove to be an astute purchase for the Anfield side.
Robertson remains the No. 1 in the left-back role, but the Scotland captain has not provided the usual air of imperiousness of late, and the Reds bosses appear to have one eye on securing an heir.
The 29-year-old has unquestionably been a bona fide revelation for the Merseyside outfit since signing from Hull City for £10m in 2017, making 269 appearances, posting 63 assists and playing a central role in the illustrious success of recent years.
Andrea Cambiaso
The 61-cap international, however, has been described as "poor" by writer James Nalton for his uncharacteristically subpar showings towards the back end of last season.
The £30k-per-week Cambiaso, while by no means the finished article, could prove to be the ultimate heir to a stalwart and beloved figure at Anfield, with the Italy U21 international impressing on loan at Bologna last year, making 32 league displays, providing three assists and being heralded as "on fire" by talent scout Jacek Kulig for his superlative showings.
He opened his seasonal account with aplomb this term, earning a Sofascore rating of 7.8 as the Old Lady dispatched Udinese 3-0 in Serie A, providing a sumptuous looping assist for Adrien Rabiot's goal, making two key passes, completing a remarkable 97% of his passes and winning two tackles.
Journalist Josh Bunting remarked on the "impressive" performance, and with such a rounded skill set, Cambiaso could well thrive as a first-rate full-back for years to come, ranking among the top 17% of positional peers across Europe for assists, the top 10% for pass completion, the top 23% for successful take-ons and the top 20% for tackles per 90, as per FBref.
His natural penchant for eye-catching ball-playing and dynamism in his craft tantalises a successful career for the rising Italian star, and while Robertson is unlikely to be going anywhere just yet, Cambiaso is possibly the perfect solution to replace the distinguished Scotsman, when that time does come.
‘Fifties won’t take us anywhere, we will need hundreds on this pitch, says Sri Lanka batsman
Karthik Krishnaswamy in Kolkata18-Nov-2017Angelo Mathews has reason to be pleased with his comeback innings after an injury layoff that forced him to miss Sri Lanka’s historic series win over Pakistan in the UAE last month. He also has reason to be slightly miffed with himself. Having ground his way to 52 on a green, seaming Eden Gardens pitch to help his side move within sight of India’s first-innings total of 172, he chased a full, wide ball from Umesh Yadav and spooned a catch to cover. At the end of the day’s play, Mathews said he had been trying to keep the scoreboard moving during that passage of play, but could have avoided playing that shot.”I don’t think there was lapse of concentration. I was looking to score runs,” he said. “It’s just that it stopped a little bit, but no excuse. I should have left it alone, maybe.”I was looking to score runs. You can’t hang in there forever. On this wicket you will get a good ball and you tend to get out. All in all it’s about runs. You have got to score runs. It won’t be pretty. You can’t be fluent on this wicket. You have got to grind and try and score runs.”Mathews added 99 for the third wicket with Lahiru Thirimanne to move Sri Lanka to 133 for 2, but both fell soon after getting to their half-centuries to bring India back into the contest. They faced some difficult spells from Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Mohammed Shami and Umesh Yadav, and Mathews called all three of them “world class”.”They keep coming at you,” he said. “You can’t relax. If you see, the loose balls were very few. As I said, they are top-class bowlers. Credit to Thirimanne for the way he played. But 50s won’t take us anywhere. We need to try and score hundreds on this wicket.”Injuries have dogged Mathews right through the last year or so, and he felt this was a sign that the non-stop cricket he had played in the three previous years had caught up with him.”It has been a quite a frustrating year for me with injuries, going in and out of the side,” he said. “It’s not easy, you know, when you don’t have the same rhythm. I had a good three years of cricket from 2013 onwards; I guess it’s taking a toll on my body.”I have to manage my workload. It comes with experience as well. I have played a few more games than the rest of the boys. You have got to prepare mentally but you know it is not going to be easy here. India is a fantastic team and you have to be on the top of the game to compete against them.”Mathews has also given up captaincy and – for now, given all his fitness issues – bowling. Having endured a lean run with the bat in recent times, Mathews said he would need to raise his game to keep pulling his weight as a specialist batsman.”I can’t be thinking of me being the premier batsman and former captain,” he said. “All are equal. We have to go out there and take responsibility and try and score as many runs as possible. Fifties are not going to do any good to anyone. Not for me and not for my team.”If we get a start we need to go on to get a big one. It was a challenging wicket. All three fast bowlers bowled well. It comes with experience as well. I have played 70-odd Test matches and with experience you get to know how to get about things.”
