Durham held at bay as Ateeq Javid thrives on promotion to open

ScorecardDropped catches proved expensive for Durham after the visitors chose to bowl first on day one of their Specsavers County Championship match against Leicestershire at the Fischer County Ground, Grace Road.Paul Collingwood, captaining Durham for the last time away from their Chester-le-Street home, put down both Harry Dearden and Neil Dexter, both times at first slip, though Dexter should already have been dismissed first ball, Michael Richardson shelling a relatively straightforward chance at third slip.Had Richardson held the chance, off Matt Salisbury, Leicestershire would have been 139 for 5 and struggling. As it was Dexter and Dearden went on to compile a partnership of 77 for the fifth wicket in just 17 overs before Leicestershire’s lower order and tail took their score past 300.In the absence of captain Paul Horton, unavailable due to personal reasons, Ateeq Javid was promoted to open. He and academy graduate Sam Evans put together a partnership of 31 for Leicestershire’s first wicket before Evans was leg before to a delivery from Chris Rushworth which seamed back in to the young right-hander.With the bowlers struggling to cope with the strong southerly wind, Colin Ackermann hit Barry McCarthy for successive boundaries before the Ireland international had his revenge with a delivery that moved away just enough to find the edge.Javid was dismissed shortly after reaching his half-century, his highest score for Leicestershire, leg before to a Rushworth delivery which seamed back, and though Mark Cosgrove showed signs of finding some sort of form in going to 37, he was also beaten on numerous occasions, particularly by Rushworth, before being bowled pushing across the line at a delivery from Salisbury.Dexter’s good fortune enable he and Dearden to repair the innings before Dexter eventually went leg before on the front foot to Gareth Harte with the score on 216 shortly before tea, and when Dearden edged a loose drive at Mark Wood without further addition to the score, Durham might have hoped to have their opponents all out for around 260.But Lewis Hill, in company with Ben Mike, Callum Parkinson and Gavin Griffiths, guided Leicestershire to a third batting bonus point.

Leeds could repeat Pontus Jansson masterclass with £20m swoop

Leeds United faced the unenviable task of turning the ship around to gain positive momentum after they were relegated from the Premier League at the end of last season.

The Whites kicked off their summer with the appointment of Daniel Farke as the club's new head coach and then overhauled the squad with a host of incomings and outgoings.

Rodrigo, Jack Harrison, Max Wober, Robin Koch, and Luis Sinisterra were among those to depart, either permanently or on loan, and that opened the door for new arrivals to come in.

Jaidon Anthony, Ilia Gruev, Djed Spence, Joel Piroe, Joe Rodon, Glen Kamara, Sam Byram, Karl Darlow, and Ethan Ampadu were all snapped up to bolster their Championship promotion hopes.

Leeds defender Sam Byram.

The Yorkshire-based outfit are currently third in the table after 16 games and are eight points off the top of the table, which suggests that the club's summer business has had a positive impact.

Rodon, in particular, has been an impressive addition to the group and there is now some speculation over whether or not he could have a future at Elland Road beyond his current loan.

Leeds United transfer news – Joe Rodon

According to a report from TEAMtalk, Leeds may have the opportunity to sign the central defender on a permanent basis if they are promoted to the Premier League this season.

The outlet has claimed that Tottenham Hotspur are 'open' to the possibility of cashing in on the Wales international next summer, which suggests that he is not a part of Ange Postecoglou's long-term plans in London.

It is stated that Spurs could hold out for a fee within the region of £20m for the ex-Swansea City star, having paid an initial fee of £11m to sign him back in 2020.

Leeds defender Joe Rodon.

He is currently on a season-long loan from the top-flight side and Farke recently confirmed that the towering enforcer will remain at Elland Road until the conclusion of the campaign, at least.

When asked about the possibility of a recall during the January transfer window, the Whites boss stated that the defender will stay with the club and hailed his performances to that point as "brilliant".

Whilst there is a long way to go in the season, there is now the potential for Leeds to repeat the masterclass they played with Pontus Jansson by securing a permanent deal for Rodon.

The Sweden international initially signed for the club on loan from Serie A side Torino ahead of the 2016/17 Championship campaign before being snapped up permanently for a reported fee of £3.5m the following year.

Jansson's Leeds career in numbers

He hit the ground running in England with a sublime debut season in the second tier as the impressive defender displayed his fantastic defensive qualities.

The Torino loanee played 34 Championship matches throughout the year and ended the term with a staggering 10.4 clearances per game for the team, which was at least 2.5 more per outing than any of his teammates managed.

This showed that his positioning and reading of the game was a level above the other defenders at the club as he was in the right place at the right time to clear the danger more often than anyone else.

Jansson also made 3.4 tackles and interceptions per clash as the fantastic battler showcased his ability to win possession back on a consistent basis.

Former Leeds defender Pontus Jansson.

His dominance at the back was also on full display as the Swedish titan won 67% of his duels, and 73% of his battles on the ground, throughout the season.

These performances convinced Leeds to pay £3.5m to sign him in 2017 and the central defender went on to play another 81 Championship games across the subsequent two seasons.

His form for Marcelo Bielsa in his final campaign for the Whites between 2018 and 2019 was particularly eye-catching. He ranked second within the squad for both tackles (2.4) and interceptions (2.3) per match, whilst also leading the way with his 4.2 clearances per outing.

Eventually, Leeds opted to cash in and make a profit on Jansson as Brentford swooped to seal his signature for a reported fee of £5.5m in 2019, which represented a £2m profit after just two years of being in Yorkshire on a permanent deal.

Rodon could now follow in his footsteps by signing permanently after an impressive year on loan, as the Welsh gem has been in superb form so far this season.

Rodon's season in numbers

The 26-year-old colossus, who was recently lauded as "terrific" by international and former Spurs teammate Ben Davies, has hit the ground running for Farke this term.

A red card for two bookable offences against Hull in September was a rare moment of vulnerability from the fantastic ace, who has contributed to the club's excellent defensive record.

Only Leicester (ten) have conceded fewer goals than Leeds (16) after 16 matches and this illustrates how impressive the defence, and the structure around it, has been, with Rodon at the heart of the backline.

The Welsh ace has featured in 13 of the club's Championship games and contributed with two tackles and interceptions combined per match, whilst also being within the top 31% of players in his position at that level for clearances (4.59) and blocks (1.5) per 90.

He has displayed his dominance with a duel success rate of 61%, which shows that opposition forwards have rarely been able to get the better of him in physical contests.

Rodon has also been an important part of Leeds' control in possession as the central defender is a reliable passer. In fact, he currently ranks within the top 13% of his positional Championship peers with a pass accuracy of 89.7% this season.

The Wales international also played 15 Premier League games for Tottenham earlier in his career and has, therefore, already had a taste of top-flight football in this country, which could be useful experience to have if the Whites win promotion this term.

Therefore, Leeds could secure an excellent deal and repeat their Jansson masterclass by signing an impressive central defender on a permanent deal after a fantastic loan spell at Elland Road, if Rodon carries his form on throughout the rest of the campaign and helps the side to return to the top table.

Wolves can find surprise Pedro Neto replacement in academy star

Wolverhampton Wanderers responded to a disappointing loss at Sheffield United with an enthralling home win over Tottenham Hotspur last time out, Gary O'Neil's men getting the better of Spurs with two late stoppage time strikes to win 2-1 at Molineux.

This captivating victory was secured without Pedro Neto even being present for the Old Gold, the Portuguese assist king absent for Wolves ever since pulling up with a hamstring injury against Newcastle United.

This injury concern had the potential to completely derail the team overall, Neto notching up an impressive seven assists from ten games before this unfortunate knock was sustained.

Pedro Neto

His presence was sorely missed in the 2-1 defeat at Bramall Lane, but back in front of the home faithful last time out, Pablo Sarabia stepped up to the mark with an impactful cameo to fill Neto's void. The Spaniard would help himself to a goal and an assist, that assist drawing him closer to Neto's total with five.

When Neto is nursed back to full fitness, there will be concerns that Wolves' number seven could be poached by a bigger club especially if he immediately picks back up from where he left off.

Instead of pursuing a replacement that would break the bank if he was to depart, O'Neil could look towards Owen Hesketh coming through the youth ranks at Molineux as a cost-effective alternative – the 21-year-old midfielder dazzling Premier League 2 defenders with his performances as a playmaker this season.

Hesketh's statistics at youth level

Operating as a central attacking midfielder primarily, but more than adept to slot in at left wing to fulfill a Neto style role, Hesketh has four goals and one assist from eight Premier League 2 games to date.

It's not been a standout season that's come from the blue for the young Wales U21 international however, a regular performer at youth level for Wolves since joining the Academy structure in 2019 from Manchester City.

The 21-year-old even won Academy Player of the Season two years back for his consistently impressive displays, coincidentally winning this accolade in the same year which Pedro Neto picked up the same award for his first-team efforts.

The similarities don't stop there either, with Hesketh's weaving runs and ability on the ball to pick out teammates with ice-cold precision bearing a resemblance to Wolves' star-man at senior level.

Hesketh's style of play

Carrying a more obvious goalscoring threat than Neto – who had only netted one goal himself before his untimely injury – Hesketh is a far more clinical presence in attack when an opportunity comes his way on top of being a creative spark.

In the EFL Trophy this campaign for the Wolves U21s, Hesketh managed to score against Notts County and didn't look out of place against the tricky League Two team whatsoever.

Played into space by teammate Owen Farmer, Hesketh showed no nerves to simply feather the ball home for the opening strike of the match at Meadow Lane.

Hesketh was a constant livewire throughout, shades of Neto's game coming out in his performance particularly in his efforts to evade markers trying to contain him by cleverly timing a perfect run into space – one of those runs nearly paid off with his second goal of the contest, only for the side-netting to intervene.

Labelled as a "talented individual" by Academy manager for football Jon Hunter-Barrett recently after penning a new deal with Wolves, the 21-year-old will hope his time to shine in the first-team picture will come soon.

With Nathan Fraser promoted to the first-team ranks in September – the potent striker at youth level named on the bench by O'Neil versus AFC Bournemouth – Hesketh will pray he's the next in line for a chance to succeed in the senior squad.

If the Welshman did succeed, he could well be the natural successor for Neto if Wolves' number seven does decide to move onto pastures new in 2024 – thus saving the club millions after negating the need to seek out a costly replacement.

Newlands ball-tampering "disappointing but not surprising"

Players being treated as commodities by Cricket Australia and living in a ‘gilded bubble’ in-part created an environment for the ball-tampering

Players being treated as commodities by Cricket Australia and living in a ‘gilded bubble’ in-part created an environment for the ball-tampering scandal in South Africa, according to the Ethics Centre Review into Australian cricket. The review states that “the evidence suggests that Newlands was not an aberration – a cultural ‘outlier’. Rather, it is an extreme example of a latent tendency growing out of the prevailing culture of men’s cricket in Australia – especially (but not exclusively) at the elite level.”The review quoted one respondent stating that the events in Newlands were “disappointing but not surprising”.The review canvassed responses from many elite players who felt they were treated as “commodities” or “assets” and “their ‘measure is recorded in runs made, wickets taken, matches won, world rankings. They count for little – perhaps for nothing – outside of those metrics”.The review found that “in turn, players have internalised the belief that winning is the only thing that matters. For example, a number of elite players made it clear that they would not challenge the bad behaviour of a gifted player – in case doing so would put the player off their game – making the difference between a win or loss.”The review explicitly states, “when the quality of an individual cover drive matters more than a person’s character, then it is difficult to sustain the case for investing in personal integrity.”The new Australia coach Justin Langer, appointed in the midst of the review being undertaken, has been quoted on a number of occasions as wanted to pick players based on their “character over cover drives”.The review also found that the elite pathway for male players reaching the pinnacle of Australian cricket has put them in a ‘gilded bubble’ that is “isolated from the lifeblood of cricket – the multitude of less gifted players who comprise the bulk of the game: and ordinary Australians who make up the game’s fan base.”But the review noted that ‘gilded bubble’ was not just made up of the Australian team but the entire high performance program featuring coaches and support staff.”Unfortunately, the focus on winning and the success of the Australian Men’s Team has pushed the rest of Australian cricket into a subservient role,” the review states. One story of a groundsman preparing a practice pitch over an extended period of time, only to see an elite bowler deliver seven balls before stopping due to reaching their management ‘quota’, highlighted the bubble.”This kind of behaviour speaks of the gross disrespect to those who are not natives of the ‘gilded bubble’,” the review states. “It sets an example in which the ends justify the means. It invites the development of a culture of exceptionalism in which the normal standards of decency do not apply.”Those living within the ‘gilded bubble’ would probably be horrified to realise that this is how their conduct is experienced and judged. They might assume that others understand that none of it is meant to be ‘personal’. That all is done in the service of a greater good – the success of cricket as a whole.”

Tottenham academy gem "out for up to six weeks" in "massive" injury blow

It has been a reported that a Tottenham prodigy has been ruled out "for up to six weeks" through injury.

Spurs injury crisis worsens for Postecoglou

Spurs manager Ange Postecoglou is already having to cope with a plethora of injuries, as the club suffer a real absentee crisis right now. James Maddison, Micky van de Ven, Richarlison, Ryan Sessegnon, Manor Solomon, Ashley Phillips, Pape Matar Sarr and Rodrigo Bentancur are all currently on the treatment table, dealing Postecoglou a real problem as we head in to the hectic festive period.

Coupled with a suspension for Cristian Romero, that's nine Spurs players who are currently unavailable to feature as the Lilywhites squad is stripped to its bare bones.

Ange Postecoglou

"Yeah, that's a pretty good summation," said Postecoglou on Spurs' injury list. "We have got eight (injuries), Bentancur nine, we had a couple of suspensions today and we've only got a squad of 25. You do the sums and that's what we've got.

"We lost Ashley Phillips during the week as well. It is just the situation we're in at the moment, but we'll get through it. It might take a little while, but we'll get through it and as long as we show the same intent and play the football we did today, I've got no doubt when we come out the other side, we'll be a very good football team."

The north Londoners take on Premier League champions Man City next, with more tough matches against West Ham and Newcastle United coming soon after the Blues.

George Abbott "out for up to six weeks" at Spurs

Now, according to independent Tottenham news account Lilywhite Rose, who regularly breaks news on the Spurs academy, the injury crisis is also sweeping beneath the first team.

In-form striker Mikey Moore has apparently been sidelined for over a month after picking up a calf injury on international duty, and it now appears highly-rated young midfielder George Abbott has been sidelined too.

The England Under-18 international will apparently be "out for up to six weeks" with an injury in what is a "massive blow" for him.

"Understand George Abbott will be out for up to six weeks with an injury," wrote Lilywhite Rose insider John Wenham.

"Massive blow for the hugely talented England youth international who made his first team debut away to Leeds last season. Wishing you the best George."

Abbott's debut for the Spurs first team came under interim boss Ryan Mason, who spoke of the importance surrounding giving youth an opportunity.

George Abbott – fact file (via Transfermarkt)

Date of birth – August 17, 2005

Place of birth – London

Height – 1.75m

Position – defensive midfield

Foot – right

"I would say the most important thing is to have people who have energy, who feel that pride to wear this shirt," said Mason after handing Abbott his debut (via tribalfootball).

"Those two lads that came on I said it to them afterwards that they are an example of what an academy player should look like in terms of their work rate.

“I've been in the academy, I know both of them very well and that's not a gift for either of them. That's hard work, consistently every day, doing it right, so they deserve that moment and I really value young players in any squad, because when you've got a player that feels the club and knows what it's like to represent the football club it can be powerful."
