Gautam Gambhir to retire from all cricket

The former India opener was highest scorer in two World Cup finals, and also led Kolkata Knight Riders to two IPL titles

Top-scoring in two World Cup finals stuff of dreams – Gambhir

Former Indian opener Gautam Gambhir is set to retire from all cricket, calling time on a career that began in 1999-2000, and has lasted almost two decades. His last match will be Delhi’s Ranji Trophy match against Andhra at his home ground, Feroz Shah Kotla, beginning on December 6.Gambhir announced his retirement through a video on social media. He admitted he had been “contemplating” and “dreading” quitting the game, but the “negative noises” were only increasing everyday, eventually forcing him to take the call. “It slapped me hard when I got those three ducks in a row in the 2014 IPL,” Gamhir said. “Then again when I had a dreadful tour to England the same year. In 2016 I was on my knees again. I was dropped after Rajkot Test match against England. I was searching for my confidence in that deep, dark pit but I could only lay my hands on the same sharp, disturbing noise. It said the same: ‘IT IS OVER GAUTI’.”Gambhir’s last appearance for India came in the first Test of the home series against England in late 2016. Overall, Gambhir, 37, played 58 Tests, scoring 4154 runs at an average of 41.95, including nine centuries and 22 fifties. He played 147 ODIs, scoring 5238 runs at an average of 39.68 and a strike-rate of 85.25. Gambhir also played 37 T20Is, scoring 932 runs at a strike-rate of 119.02.Gambhir was part of two World Cup triumphs for India, top-scoring in both finals. He made 75 in the 2007 World T20 final, when India beat Pakistan by five runs. In the 2011 World Cup final, batting at No.3, he scored 97 to revive India after Virender Sehwag and Sachin Tendulkar had fallen early. MS Dhoni sealed the title with a six while his batting partner Yuvraj Singh finished as Player of the Tournament, but India might not have crossed the finish line without Gambhir’s steely presence in the top order.ESPNcricinfo

Gambhir formed one of India’s most stable and durable opening partnerships in world cricket with Sehwag, the duo putting on a record (for India) 4412 runs in 87 innings together from 2004 to 2012. Their tally is the fifth best for any pair of openers in Test cricket. Gambhir was also part of the India team that ascended to the No.1 spot in Test cricket in 2009 under MS Dhoni, and his rich vein of form in 2008 and 2009 earned him the ICC Test Player of the Year award in 2009.Between 2008 and 2010, Gambhir made at least one half-century in 11 consecutive Test matches, equalling the record of Vivian Richards, who had achieved the same feat in 1976-1977. In that period, Gambhir also hit centuries in five consecutive Tests in 2009-10, the joint second-longest such streak. In 2009, he was ranked the No.1 batsman in Test cricket in the ICC’s rankings. During this period, Gambhir also played what is commonly regarded as his greatest Test innings, staying at the crease for 643 minutes while making 137 when India were following-on against New Zealand in Napier. Gambhir’s vigil let India draw the Test and complete a rare series win against New Zealand.Gambhir also led India in six ODIs, a five-match series against New Zealand in late 2010, and a solitary ODI against West Indies in December 2011.Though Gambhir could not make a comeback to the India side after 2016, he continued to play domestic cricket for Delhi. He enjoyed being the mentor more than the performer, and even declined captaincy allowing younger players like Rishabh Pant and Nitish Rana to take leadership roles. However, the old fears returned to haunt him when Gambhir struggled at the start of IPL 2018 after returning to Delhi Daredevils, having been released by Kolkata Knight Riders – a team he had led to IPL titles in 2012 and 2014. Gambhir said he realised then his “time was up” and he could fight no further. “After more than 15 years of cricket for my country I want to retire from playing this beautiful game.”Gambhir said the memories he would cherish were the happier ones, none bigger than being the highest scorer in the two World Cup finals he played in. He also looked back fondly on being part of the No.1 Test team, and winning the triangular CB series in Australia in 2008. “This may sound a little wishful but I’ve seen wishes come true,” he said. “Two World Cups, highest run-getter in the final of both of these games is the stuff dreams are made of.”Somewhere on the top is being the No. 1 Test team in the world. A trophy I’ll look at very fondly is the one I got for being awarded the ICC best Test batsman of the year in 2009. For a purist like me, it is a reward for somewhat knowing where my off stump was. The historic series win in New Zealand and the CB series in Australia will be reflected upon fondly. But I hope the current Indian team Down Under can overshadow our feats.”Among his other domestic accomplishments, Gambhir led Delhi to the Ranji Trophy title in 2007-08. He was also looking forward to the final chapter of his cricketing journey being at his home ground. “It is all coming to an end from where it started at Feroz Shah Kotla. I am a big one on loyalty. I am glad that I could finish with teams that I started my journey with. In this case ending with both Delhi Daredevils and Delhi domestic side has given me immense satisfaction.”Gambhir said he had always valued “timing” in his game and that had gone missing, signalling it was time to move on. “As a batsman I have always valued timing. I know the time is just right. I am sure it’s sweet as well. Goodbye and good luck.”

Seamers to the fore as West Indies put up their Dukes

England coach Trevor Bayliss hopes the use of a specially designed Dukes ball “plays into our hands”

England coach Trevor Bayliss hopes the use of a specially designed Dukes ball “plays into our hands” in the Test series against West Indies. The ball, adapted to cope with abrasive Caribbean surfaces, appears to stay hard and swing for longer. England had their first look at it during the warm-up games at the 3Ws Oval and enjoyed it to the extent that they claimed 30 wickets in two days. Their swing bowlers appeared to find movement almost all day.The use of the ball could become controversial by the end of the series. ESPNcricinfo understands that the former West Indies coaching regime, headed by Stuart Law and Nic Pothas, were keen to use a Kookaburra ball in this series on the basis that England have a history of struggling to gain much movement with it. They were also keen to play on slower, lower surfaces, such as in Guyana, in the hope of negating England’s seamers and exploiting a perceived weakness in their batting. But Johnny Grave, the CWI chief executive, decided on a different approach. He reasoned that the newly adapted Dukes ball, specially designed for use in the Caribbean after consultation between the manufacturer and CWI officials, would provide faster-moving, more entertaining cricket and avoid some of the attritional encounters seen between these sides in recent years. With several thousand England supporters expected in the Caribbean over the coming weeks, providing that attractive cricket – or at least cricket where the bowlers are in the game more often than has sometimes been the case in the past – has been prioritised. At the same time, groundstaff have been instructed to prepare pitches with some pace and life. With the England attack containing James Anderson and Stuart Broad – two men with 998 Test wickets between them – that would appear to be a gutsy move, though Grave would argue West Indies have a potent fast bowling attack of their own and that it is vital to provide a spectacle if supporters of either side are to be encouraged to attend.

Last year, West Indies played five Tests at home, using a batch of Dukes balls. Seam bowling was dominant in series against Sri Lanka and Bangladesh, with Shannon Gabriel and Jason Holder taking 28 wickets apiece at averages of 15.64 and 12.00 respectively.”The boys say the ball is still swinging late in the innings,” Bayliss said after England’s warm-up games in Barbados. “We have swing bowlers in our group, so hopefully that plays into our hands. It means it will move longer when we bat too, though, so we will have to be aware of that.”Partly as a result of the ball, England are prepared to field an attack containing just one spinner. As things stand, that is expected to be Moeen Ali, with three seamers, Anderson, Broad and Sam Curran, forming the basis of the attack alongside seam-bowling allrounder Ben Stokes. They will not take a first look at the surface at the Kensington Oval until Monday, however, so are prepared to draft a second spinner – almost certainly the left-armer Jack Leach – into the side instead of Curran if it looks as if there will be less help for the seamers than anticipated.”We’re pretty close to deciding our team,” Bayliss said. “We’re probably down to a 12, but we’ll wait until we get to the Test ground to see the conditions. It will either be two spinners and two quicks plus Stokes, or one spinner and three quicks, plus Stokes.”West Indies named spinners Roston Chase and Jomel Warrican in their squad but are currently expected to play only one of them in an attack containing four seamers. They, too, however could change their mind after looking at the pitch. As things stand, it appears the first day of the series at the Kensington Oval will be a complete sell-out. Cricket in the Caribbean – everywhere, really – faces some challenges. But the decline in its popularity is often overplayed.

Depois de ter goleado por 5 a 1 o Remo na partida de ida, nesse sábado (30) a equipe de Goiânia conseguiu outro triunfo, dessa vez por 3 a 2, que apenas ratificou a sua terceira conquista do torneio na história.

Leeds could accept transfer offer for "special" Wilfried Gnonto in January

Leeds United could accept an offer for one of their first-team stars in January as Daniel Farke aims to continue his side's promotion push, according to a recent report.

Leeds United 1-1 Coventry City

In a lively match at Elland Road on Saturday, Leeds and Coventry City shared the spoils and took a point apiece after Crysencio Summerville's opener was ruled out by a reply from Bobby Thomas eight minutes later.

Making it two games without a victory for the Whites in the Championship, Farke's men remain third in the table with 42 points from their 22 fixtures played; however, Southampton lurk just below them on goal difference following a 4-0 victory over Blackburn at St Mary's Stadium.

In his post-match press conference, Farke didn't hide his frustration after failing to take three points against the visitors, saying:

"Disappointment and frustration. When you win a point you see positive aspects but after this game it feels like two points dropped. When you judge the game, we should have won. We did more than enough."

"I don't want to talk about the positives. Coventry put everyone who could defend on their teamsheet. They left their creative players out. It was clear that they would sit very deep. You have to be relentless until you open them. We did this with a fantastic goal. The problem is we didn't bury the game."

One flashpoint during proceedings came at the end, where Summerville refused to shake Thomas' hand at the conclusion of the game, leading to something of a brawl between the two sets of players on the field in which several key men had to intervene.

Now, one of the men involved in the scenes at full-time, Wilfried Gnonto, who restrained Summerville before getting involved in an altercation of his own, could now be allowed to depart Elland Road in the January transfer window.

Wilfried Gnonto could leave Leeds…

According to Football Insider, Leeds United could sell Italy international Gnonto in January and use the funds to invest further in their playing squad. The former FC Zurich man has struggled for regular football under Farke and is being monitored by several clubs from the Premier League and his native Italy.

The 20-year-old is under contract at the Whites until 2027 and previously agitated for a move earlier this year and was removed from first-team activities; however, he has since returned to the fold to try and help his side's promotion push.

Labelled "special" by former coach Michael Skubala, the Verbania-born man has made 17 appearances in all competitions this term, registering one goal and a solitary assist (Gnonto statistics – Transfermarkt).

Looking ahead, cashing in on Gnonto could be a productive way of being able to bankroll new signings that could earn promotion at Leeds, making this one to watch.

Ben Dunk, Marcus Stoinis, bowlers flatten inept Adelaide Strikers

Stars impressively adjusted to slower conditions with a well-crafted batting performance followed by disciplined bowling to comprehensively outplay Strikers

The Report by Tristan Lavalette23-Jan-2019A rejuvenated Melbourne Stars impressively adjusted to slower conditions with a well-crafted batting performance followed by disciplined bowling to comprehensively outplay Adelaide Strikers in the first-ever BBL match in the regional Victorian town of Moe.After being sent in, Stars built a strong target of 2 for 167 on a slow and low Ted Summerton Reserve surface on the back of a century opening stand by Ben Dunk and Marcus Stoinis. In reply, Strikers never looked threatening as their struggling batting line-up embarrassingly succumbed in the back-end, losing 6 for 11 in 22 deliveries. The accurate Stars attack was led by the red-hot Stoinis, who once again completed a stirring all-round performance. It was a crucial victory for a full-strength Stars, who moved to a 5-5 record and won their second in a row since the return of key players from national duty. Reigning champions Strikers (4-6) are in danger of missing the playoffs after losing their third straight match.Dunk and Stoinis lay strong platformThere was much intrigue over the pitch and both teams opted for a conservative approach in a game of cat and mouse. In-form Stoinis started watchfully and had an early reprieve with Colin Ingram dropping a tough catch at cover in the first over.Dunk, however, was keen to get out of a form slump after averaging just 18 in the tournament leaving his position under scrutiny ahead of the contest. He rediscovered his touch by smoking several boundaries through the off-side to get off to a flyer. He was soon matched by Stoinis, who had scored just eight runs off his first 13 balls before upping the ante by boldly attacking Strikers’ main weapon Rashid Khan. Forced to come on in the Powerplay, Rashid was unable to tap into his bag of tricks against the confident Stoinis who slammed a pair of boundaries to signal his intent. With Rashid’s potency stymied, Strikers’ struggling attack was bereft of ideas as they continued to miss the services of veteran Peter Siddle to national duty. Dunk, fittingly, notched his second-half century of the tournament with a six over extra cover in the 13th over and Stoinis reached the landmark just three balls later – his third in his last four BBL innings.Strikers’ – who were wicketless in a hammering last start against Hobart Hurricanes – drought ended when Stoinis holed out off Khan in the 14th over, but the 113-run opening partnership had the Stars perfectly poised to compile a mammoth total.Ben Dunk puts the ball into the leg side•Getty Images

Stars unable to get into overdrive on slow surfaceStars’ expected huge total never quite materialised with the latter overs relatively sedate. The spin of Rashid and Liam O’Connor slowed the runs down momentarily after Stoinis’ dismissal before Dunk launched out against pace.Relishing the extra zip from big quick Billy Stanlake, Dunk whipped over the deep square leg boundary and he relished the short ball tactics from the Strikers’ quicks. Handscomb, meanwhile, showcased his liking against spin with a masterful sweep to the boundary off Khan, who finished with the unusually expensive figures of 1-32 from four overs.Scoring quickly wasn’t easy on a slowing wicket conjuring low bounce and Handscomb hogged much of the strike at the death before being run out on the final delivery after making 36 off 22 balls.Stars were impressive but they left plenty of firepower in the shed with Strikers undoubtedly relieved not having to bowl to Glenn Maxwell.Lehmann fires after Weatherald’s unlucky dismissal Alex Carey started perfectly with a boundary off the first ball of the innings bowled by Maxwell before disaster struck Strikers in the fourth over when Jake Weatherald was unluckily run out at the non-striker’s end after Jackson Bird got his hand onto the ball in his follow through.Back in the lineup after being dropped earlier in the tournament, Jake Lehmann came out at No. 3 and was immediately aggressive. In a surprising move, legspinner Adam Zampa came on in the sixth over – much like Rashid in Stars’ innings – and was promptly smashed for 13 runs with Lehmann hitting a couple of belligerent boundaries.Strikers were on course until Carey holed out off Stoinis in the seventh over.Stars run through inept Strikers Just like earlier in the day, runs became increasingly difficult to score on a surface playing tricks with a Stoinis delivery in the 11th over rearing and requiring Lehmann to sway out of the way.Much of Strikers’ hopes rested on Lehmann and in-form Ingram. However, the latter couldn’t get going and holed out in the 12th over with the required run-rate spiralling out of control. Lehmann fell to a slower Dwayne Bravo delivery in the 14th over and the Strikers then crashed ensuring their title defence hangs in the balance.

Spurs could finally ditch Dier by signing £15m titan who’s like Gabriel

Tottenham Hotspur rebounded from a recent crisis with a convincing 4-1 victory over Newcastle United in the Premier League, and Ange Postecoglou will now look ahead with optimism.

The Australian manager had engineered a stunning start to the campaign after his summer appointment, with Spurs winning eight of their opening ten fixtures before the recent slump, with the injury-ravaged squad struggling to maintain their solidity.

Tottenham Hotspur manager Ange Postecoglou.

But still just seven points off first-placed Liverpool after 16 matches, Tottenham could undoubtedly surprise a few and construct a first-class streak over the coming months.

Reinforcements will be needed, however, with the strengthening of the defence taking precedence down the N17.

Tottenham transfer news – Jonathan Tah

According to Spanish reports, Tottenham have entered the race to sign Bayer Leverkusen centre-back Jonathan Tah, with the 27-year-old eager to try his hand (or foot, more precisely) in the Premier League.

Leverkusen, led by Xabi Alonso, have surprisingly leapt into pole position in the Bundesliga this term, currently three points ahead of Harry Kane's Bayern Munich, and Tah has been instrumental, starting 13 of the 14 fixtures.

German centre-back Jonathan Tah.

The 6 foot 5 Germany international is out of contract in 2025 and the appropriate time to cash in might be drawing near, with Kicker reporting that his sale could be granted for €18m (£15m).

Jonathan Tah's style of play

The 21-cap international has remarkably scored four goals from 20 appearances across all competitions this season, also completing 5.7 ball recoveries and 4.1 clearances per game, as per Sofascore.

As per FBref, Tah ranks among the top 3% of centre-halfs across Europe's top five leagues over the past year for pass completion and the top 17% for goals scored per 90.

The table above also portrays the similarity to some of Europe's foremost ball-playing defenders, with the likeness to Arsenal's Gabriel Magalhaes of particular note.

gabriel-jesus-arsenal-chelsea-premier-league-edu-arteta-perrformance-raya

The Brazilian has been described as a "beast" by ex-FOX reporter Robert Lus and was integral in Arsenal's rise last season, starting all 38 Premier League matches and completing 90% of his passes, making 3.2 clearances per game and winning 71% of his ground duels.

Tottenham could mirror their neighbours' success should Tah join the fold, he would be a big upgrade on Eric Dier, who is out of contract in June and clearly not in Postecoglou's favour within the backline.

How Tah compares to Eric Dier

Once described as a "defensive battleship" by one-time teammate Christoph Kramer, Tah is far better suited to Tottenham's new style under Postecoglou's stewardship than Dier is, with the England international's chances of earning a contract extension somewhat infinitesimal at this point.

Dier, aged 29, has only featured twice this season and sat recent fixtures against Aston Villa and Manchester City out, with Postecoglou opting for full-backs Emerson Royal and Ben Davies to form the central defensive axis.

Eric Dier for Tottenham

While Dier has been something of a stalwart for Tottenham, he looks incongruous in Postecoglou's system, with his ranking among the bottom 46% of positional peers for pass completion and the bottom 8% for progressive passes per 90 illustrating this.

With Tah's crispness in possession and knack for finding space in the area to strike home, he would be a brilliant addition, complementing star duo Van de Ven and Cristian Romero and continuing the rebuild.
