Sir Jim Ratcliffe is set to buy 25% of the club and take control of footballing operations of the Red Devils, and it looks as if he could make sweeping changes when he arrives following the £1.3bn deal. He has already decided to fire chief executive Richard Arnold, whereas director of football John Murtough could be the next Old Trafford casualty.

It has recently been reported that Murtough is holding meetings over potential January transfers for United, however, he could be given a new role by Ratcliffe and INEOS when their investment is ratified, which could be after the winter window. (The Daily Mail)

As a result, a new director of football is seemingly on the agenda for Ratcliffe and co, with Newcastle United’s Dan Ashworth emerging as a top target for the position.

Recent rumours claimed that those at St James’ Park are braced for an approach from Man Utd for Ashworth and have already been looking at possible replacements, which include Bournemouth recruitment expert Richard Hughes. Now, a further update has emerged regarding the Red Devils and Ratcliffe in what is a boost for Ratcliffe.

Dan Ashworth keen on Man Utd move

According to Football Insider reporter Wayne Veysey, new top target Ashworth is now “very keen” on taking the role at Old Trafford, with Man Utd holding behind-the-scenes talks over a possible deal.

The 52-year-old is attracted by the proposition so could end up leaving Newcastle, which he joined back in May 2022 after departing Brighton & Hove Albion.

It looks as if a move to Manchester for Ashworth could materialise, and should that happen, it may come as welcome news to Gary Neville. The Red Devils legend took to X earlier this season to share an interaction he had with Ashworth prior to the Magpies’ 3-0 win at Old Trafford in the EFL Cup.

“On my way up to the gantry last night, I bumped into Dan Ashworth. He transformed the FA’s structure, set Brighton up for this incredible period of success and has now built a strong foundation for the new owners at Newcastle. He’s competent, highly qualified and knows what he’s doing.

England’s Test captain Joe Root has called for clarity over what constitutes an acceptable “Mankad” run-out, after being invited to contemplate a scenario in which England’s World Cup ambitions ended because of cricket’s most controversial dismissal.The issue has again become relevant after Root’s team-mate Jos Buttler, one of England’s trump cards, was run out by bowler Ravi Ashwin during the IPL match between Kings XI Punjab and Rajasthan Royals on Monday.”I think it’s a good warning now and I’m glad it’s not happened to us in the World Cup final for example, or in a World Cup game,” Root said.Ashwin removed the bails after he pulled out of a delivery as Buttler backed up and, although the bowler acted within the Laws, England want clarification before the World Cup begins.Root is confident that England will not indulge in the practice, partly because they are aware of the national outcry that would follow, but nor does he want to outlaw the practice. The top four in the Championship are in a race of their own. However, West Bromwich Albion, in fifth, are desperately trying to stay alive in the fight for automatic promotion but are currently 13 points adrift of Ipswich Town in second.

The Baggies currently boast the second-best defensive record in England's second tier this season but it is the attack that is currently letting head coach Carlos Corberan down, as West Brom rank 12th for goals scored in the division.

Nevertheless, with the January window open, Corberan is reportedly eyeing up attacking reinforcements to bolster his frontline to rectify this issue.

West Brom transfer news – Umut Nayir

According to a report from Turkish journalist Yagiz Sabuncuoglu, West Brom are set to battle it out with fellow promotion rivals Cardiff City over the signing of Fenerbahce frontman Umut Nayir.

The 30-year-old has struggled for game-time this season with the Super Lig giants and has played just 120 minutes in total for Fenerbahce, spread across 12 matches. This comes to just ten minutes per appearance despite the club currently paying him £10k-per-week. Furthermore, Nayir has failed to find the net even once in the 2023/24 campaign.

Having signed for the club on a two-year deal during the summer, Nayir quickly found himself down the pecking order under manager Ismail Kartal as both ex-Premier League stars Edin Dzeko and Michy Batshuayi have rotated the number nine position and have a combined total of 24 goals between them.

With that in mind, it seems as though an exit from Fenerbahce is likely this winter and West Brom could offer the striker the chance to kick-start his career.

Last season, Brandon Thomas-Asante finished as West Brom's top goalscorer in all competitions with nine goals in total in 35 appearances. This season, he is already just one off his record from the previous campaign, having found the net eight times in 25 matches, including seven in the Championship.

The issue for Corberan is that the former Salford City man is heavily relied upon for goals. The Baggies have scored 32 goals in all competitions this term and 25% have been through Thomas-Asante. Additionally, the 25-year-old's backup centre-forward Josh Maja has only managed to convert one opportunity all season in nine matches, offering little to nothing to the team if the first-choice striker doesn't have his shooting boots on.

Nayir could help alleviate this issue. While this season certainly hasn't gone to plan, the Turkey international has been a prolific goalscorer throughout his career and has a much more reliable record than the man he could replace at The Hawthorns, having registered 103 goal contributions in 265 appearances as a professional.

Granted, Nayir is five years older than Maja, but he still boasts more than double the number of goals that Maja has bagged in his entire career. Right now, West Bromwich Albion need goals and the Turkish centre-forward certainly has goals in him, so Corberan shouldn't pass up the opportunity to bring him to the Midlands this winter.
