Board chief Nazmul Hassan says franchises must fall in line even as seven of the eight team owners join forces to protest

Comilla Victorians are the defending BPL champions•BCB
The next edition of the Bangladesh Premier League (BPL) will not be a franchise-run affair and, instead, be owned by the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB), following a clash between the board and six of the seven existing team owners, Dhaka Dynamites being the only exception. The update came from Nazmul Hassan, the BCB president, who announced in Dhaka on Wednesday that if franchises were not willing to stick to the rules of the BPL, the board was happy to “take the load of running the BPL” on its own.”We were supposed to rework the agreements with the franchises this year. We have met them in between, we have had lots of meetings, and they have made a number of demands. But these are in direct conflict with the BPL model we have been working with. It’s not possible to accommodate the demands,” he said. “Some of them don’t want two editions of the BPL in one year [the last one was played in January-February this year, and the next is scheduled to start in December].”They haven’t said they won’t play, but they don’t want it, because of the pressure of putting it together twice. We have considered everything, and decided to host the next BPL on our own. We won’t have franchises.”ESPNcricinfo understands that the big issue was Shakib Al Hasan, Bangladesh’s premier cricketer, opting to sign up with Rangpur Riders earlier this year from Dhaka Dynamites. As such, the franchises had the option of signing four players from outside the player draft, which made Shakib’s switch, as well as that of other prominent players Tamim Iqbal and Mushfiqur Rahim, fine. But, it is believed, the Dhaka franchise was not happy about losing its star player, and wanted changes in the rules.”Apart from Dhaka Dynamites, everyone wanted the same thing. Shakib left Dhaka, so they couldn’t accept it,” Ishtiaque Sadeque, CEO of Rangpur Riders, told ESPNcricinfo. “We all wanted the old rules to stay, that’s all.”Now the BCB wants to run the BPL like a Dhaka Premier League. That’s a joke. We have been spending crores to bring the best players from overseas. Let’s see what the BCB do. Wait and watch.”Hassan, however, refused to accept that Shakib’s transfer to Rangpur was in accordance with the rules, which have largely been fluid since the tournament began. “You can’t get a player from another team if you suddenly want to. That’s a basic principle. And Shakib knows this better than anyone else. He plays a lot outside Bangladesh. If he suddenly says he won’t play for [Sunrisers] Hyderabad this year and play for Chennai [Super Kings] instead, is that possible? It’s not. But in Bangladesh, all this happens. We will put a stop to that.”ALSO READ: Jayawardene, Moody criticise frequent rule changes in BPLThe battlelines have clearly been drawn, but Hassan was gung-ho about the BCB running the show, somewhat along the lines of the Australian Big Bash League, where Cricket Australia is the owner of the competition.”BCB will own all the teams. You can compare it to the Big Bash, it will be the same format,” Hassan said. “The same teams will be there, but the management will be the BCB’s. We will pay all the salaries, we will arrange the hospitality, the travel, everything. I think everyone will be satisfied with this. The team owners who didn’t want to play will also be happy. The ones who were worried about losing money will be even happier. They will save all the money.”I can’t say right now if this will be the future. If it’s needed, the BCB will remain in charge. We have a set of rules, and we will outline more rules going forward. If someone wants to join, they can. But no one can join the BPL and then refuse to accept the rules.”Hassan also explained that it was crucial from the BCB’s point of view to host the next edition of the BPL in December-January, because March 17, 2020 is the birth centenary of ‘Bangabandhu’ Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, the father of the nation, and BPL would flag off the celebrations.”We want to begin the celebrations with cricket. We will dedicate this edition of the BPL to Bangabandhu,” Hassan said. “It will be called the Bangabandhu BPL, and if a sponsor comes along, that name will be added to the title.”We are happy to have team sponsors. The names might change depending on what the sponsors want. We will try to maintain some logic – Dhaka, Khulna, Chattogram, these names will stay. And if the teams, because they have sponsors, want to buy foreign players directly, that’s up to them. If someone wants to bring an expensive coach, they can. The sponsors must be kept happy too.”

Newcastle United have been one of the unluckiest sides with injuries so far this season, with Eddie Howe's side often looking thin in key areas with multiple players struggling during key periods.
Players such as Sven Botman, Joelinton and Harvey Barnes have all been absent for large spells this campaign, with boss Howe, having to sometimes resort to youth.
The injuries have subsequently had a hit on the Magpies' league position, with the club sitting in eighth place heading into this weekend's round of fixtures, with European football at St James' Park for a second consecutive season unlikely.
However, the injuries to key players have allowed some younger members of the Newcastle first-team to gain valuable minutes and develop with one player in particular starting to look like the real deal.
How much Lewis Miley cost Newcastle United
Youngster Lewis Miley came through Newcastle's academy, with the boyhood Magpies fan costing the club nothing – which could result in a hefty profit in the years ahead.
He's often featured in a three-man midfield for Howe's side, with the midfielder fitting straight into the side – showing no evidence of his tender age of just 17.
Since his first start against Bournemouth in November, Miley has made 16 consecutive appearances for Howe's side, with the 17-year-old impressing at St James' Park.
The youngster scored his first goal for his boyhood club during the 3-0 victory over Fulham, with Miley rapidly adapting to the physical demands of the Premier League.
The goal against Fulham made the 17-year-old the club's youngest-ever goalscorer in the Premier League, with the youngster cementing himself in Magpies history. He truly is the "unbelievable" player that teammate Sean Longstaff describes him as.

Lewis Miley's market value in 2024
Just four months on from his first-team debut, his market value has skyrocketed to £26m as per CIES Football Observatory, with this just the beginning of Miley's rise to potential stardom. That's an impressive valuation given his tender age and one that according to CIES, surpasses Harvey Barnes, Tino Livramento, Callum Wilson and Nick Pope among others.
Former Newcastle United striker Alan Shearer is the latest pundit to heap praise on the 17-year-old, with Shearer saying:
“He just looks natural, he looks very comfortable. Other than looking at his baby looks, if you didn’t know who or what he was you would think he has been around for years, the way he was strutting around the pitch and closing down and the balance he had on the ball. "
Newcastle United legend Alan Shearer.
Although it's still very early days for the teenager in terms of his professional career, it certainly does look as though he could be a huge asset for the Magpies in the years to come.
When delving into Miley's stats in the Premier League this season, he excels despite his tender age, with the youngster winning 2.5 tackles per 90 this season, a stat that is better than 30% of midfielders in the Premier League this season.

He also averages four progressive passes received per game, with Miley operating as the furthest forward out of the Magpies' three-man midfield.
The praise for Miley is justified, with the midfielder having the world at his feet. However, the club need to keep developing him and giving him consistent game time in order for him to reach his potential.
An uncertain build-up owing to security concerns resulted in little marketing, and it may have directly impacted ticket sales
Danyal Rasool in Karachi29-Sep-2019
Associated Press
One-day internationals returning to Karachi after ten years. A washout denying fans a chance of watching any cricket on Friday. This city prides itself as the most cricket-mad city in the country. Tickets should have been snapped up, right? Wrong.ESPNcricinfo understands only around 20% of tickets have been sold so far. Anecdotal evidence made it clear that the uptake wasn’t as swift as the PCB might have been hoping. It was made official when they announced ticket holders for the abandoned first ODI could attend either of the two remaining games. Moreover, the same applied to ticket holders for the second ODI; common sense would suggest if either of the games were anywhere near full houses, that would have been impossible to guarantee. It isn’t that fans in Karachi have fallen out of love with the game, though with demand much higher for the T20s in Lahore despite higher prices, there are suggestions the ODI game might be harder to market in Pakistan despite fans having limited opportunities to see any international cricket. The series was beset by several obstacles before it got off the ground, which hindered PCB’s advertising campaign. The on-off nature of the series would have put Ross and Rachel – of TV show fame – to shame; it is easy to forget that just over a fortnight ago, the Sri Lankan government said they had received credible information of a terror threat to the Sri Lankan team. The PCB received a nod from Sri Lanka Cricket only a week before the first ODI, making it a bigger challenge for PCB’s marketing department to put campaigns together for a series that, on paper, hadn’t taken off until that point. Similarly, selling tickets that may have had to be refunded was tricky. It is understood that the provincial government hasn’t assisted with advertising and marketing the series like they did for the Pakistan Super League final and the three T20Is they hosted against West Indies in 2018.Then there was the squad Sri Lanka actually sent. With ten top players pulling out citing security concerns, Sri Lanka’s squad is, to put it mildly, second string. When the West Indies played three T20Is in Karachi last year, some players chose not to tour, resulting in heavily one-sided games. The prospect of the same occurring during this ODI series cannot be ruled out, and may well have played a part in so many fans choosing to stay away. The was provided by Karachi’s weather. A city that sees very little rain, and almost none at this time of the year, was pounded all week by heavy downpours that might have made Sri Lanka’s players feel they were still at home.Karachi’s roads are famously unprepared to handle rainwater and facilities at the ground, while decent, were no match for the forces of nature they had to unexpectedly reckon with. With the weather forecast suggesting, accurately after all, that Friday would see yet more rains, there was little incentive for fans to get their tickets, and consequently not many subjected themselves to braving the heavy security and dark skies to turn up on match day. There are a number of reasons for sluggish ticket sales, but Pakistan needs fans to turn up. Especially if the whole idea of bringing cricket back is to avoid the ugly spectacle of high-quality cricket being played in front of near-empty stands in the UAE, and to give the nation’s cricket-deprived fans an opportunity to watch their team play. Much of what’s happened to suppress demand isn’t the PCB’s fault, but as they will know all too well, it is very much their problem.

Leeds United underwent a big summer of changes at the end of the 2022/23 campaign as they were relegated from the Premier League and dropped back down to the Championship.
49ers Enterprises officially completed their full takeover of the club from Andrea Radrizzani, who had been the majority owner since 2017, in July of last year.
They took over during a difficult period as they had to navigate the transition back to second division football, and they appear to have handled it brilliantly.
Daniel Farke.
German head coach Daniel Farke was brought in and currently has Leeds in third place in the Championship, which means that the club are on course to secure promotion back to the top-flight.
The 49ers also had to deal with a host of first-team players moving on as Tyler Adams and Rodrigo were sold on permanent deals, whilst the likes of Jack Harrison, Robin Koch, Max Wober, Rasmus Kristensen, and Marc Roca, among others, were sent out on loan.
Jack Harrison's future at Leeds
It remains to be seen whether or not any of the players sent out on loan at the start of the season have a future at Elland Road beyond the summer.
Football Insider did recently report, though, that Harrison wants to complete a permanent move away from Yorkshire at the end of the season, having settled in well with Everton in the Premier League.
The Toffees swooped in to secure his services on loan without an option to buy last year, which means that Sean Dyche's side do not have an agreement with the Whites to sign him on a permanent basis.
Everton's loan forward Jack Harrison.
It was stated that the English winger wants to remain in the Premier League for the 2024/25 campaign and beyond, but does not want to be there with Leeds even if Farke's side win promotion from the Championship.
Football Insider, however, added that Everton's pending takeover from 777 Partners could impact how much the Toffees are prepared to pay for Harrison.
No option to buy in the loan deal does mean that Leeds can look elsewhere and offer the former Manchester City prospect out to interested parties, should they bring more money to the table than the Merseyside outfit.
His market value has soared in recent years and 49ers could hit the jackpot by cashing in on him this summer, particularly when you consider how much the club initially paid to sign him.
How much Leeds paid for Jack Harrison
The Whites splashed out a fee of £11m to sign Harrison from Premier League giants Manchester City, who he failed to make a single appearance for, in the summer of 2021.
That move came after the impressive winger had spent three years on loan at Elland Road, two of which came in the Championship under Marcelo Bielsa.
Former Leeds winger Jack Harrison.
He endured an underwhelming first season with the club in the second tier with a return of four goals and three assists in 37 league appearances.
Harrison followed that up, however, with six goals and eight assists in 46 matches as Leeds won the title with Bielsa to secure promotion to the Premier League.
The talented whiz then hit the ground running in the top-flight with eight goals and eight assists in 36 games throughout the 2020/21 campaign.

As you can see in the table above, the Leeds star was effective in front of goal with more strikes than 'big chances' missed, and could have been frustrated with his teammates as they did not make the most of the chances that he created.
His form was impressive enough to convince the Whites to splash £11m on him and that has turned out to be a fantastic move by the club, as his value has soared in recent years.
Harrison remained a regular starter for the Yorkshire-based outfit during the 2021/22 and 2022/23 campaigns after his loan was made permanent.
He racked up eight goals, one assist, and three 'big chances' created in 32 starts throughout the first season, which was followed by a return of five goals, seven assists, and nine 'big chances' created in 34 starts last term.
However, his attacking contributions were not enough to keep Leeds afloat in the Premier League as they were relegated last summer, which led to his move to Everton.
Jack Harrison's current market value
At the time of writing (29/02/2024), FootballTransfers have his Expected Transfer Value (xTV) at a whopping €34m, which works out as around £29m.
This means that his value has soared by 164% from the initial £11m that Leeds paid Manchester City to secure his services almost three years ago.
His soaring market value suggests that Leeds could have the opportunity to hit the jackpot by selling him for a hefty profit on that £11m fee this summer, whether that is to Everton or another club.
The aforementioned report from Football Insider stated that Harrison does want to leave the Whites permanently and stay in the Premier League, which suggests that a move at the end of the season could materialise. However, it remains to be seen exactly how much a team will be prepared to pay for him.
He has enjoyed a solid campaign with the Toffees so far and offered a decent threat at the top end of the pitch for Dyche since his move to Merseyside.
The 27-year-old winger, who was hailed as "relentless" earlier this season by journalist Joe Thomas, has racked up three goals and three assists, along with five 'big chances' created, in 19 Premier League starts.
Harrison currently ranks within the top 20% of Premier League midfielders for non-penalty goals (0.17) and the top 21% for assists (0.17) per 90 respectively.
This shows that he has been above average as both a scorer and a creator of goals from a midfield position for the Toffees so far this term.
The 49ers could now hit the jackpot by striking gold with Harrison's current market value in the summer if they can rake in a big fee from Everton, or another club, for the superb speedster, who has proven himself to be a reliable performer in the Premier League.
