FSG have made first Liverpool move to sign "top talent" in £85m+ transfer

Liverpool have made an early move as they prepare for life without Jürgen Klopp and are lining up a potentially massive transfer this summer, it has been claimed.

FSG preparing for post-Klopp Liverpool

A summer of change awaits Anfield at the end of this season. Long-time boss Klopp is calling time on his stint in the technical area after nine years in the Premier League, leaving the Merseyside outfit on the hunt for a new manager.

Having transformed the Reds from also-rans to a Premier League powerhouse during his time at Anfield, the legacy of the German will be hard to live up to, and he could yet end his final season with three trophies.

Michael Edwards is returning to the club, but in a new CEO role rather than as sporting director, with Richard Hughes having been recruited from Bournemouth to take up that position.

There promises to be serious change on the pitch too, with both Joel Matip and Thiago Alcantara out of contract and likely to leave as free agents, while the core players remaining from Klopp's greatest successes (namely Andy Robertson, Virgil van Dijk, Alisson and Mo Salah) are all the wrong side of 30 years old.

Salah in particular has been the subject of heavy interest from Saudi Arabia, and Al-Ittihad could re-ignite their interest in the Egyptian as he heads into the final 12 months of his contract in north-west England, having seen a £150m offer turned down last summer. But it isn't all doom and gloom at Anfield.

Liverpool eyeing new poster boy

Now, it has been reported that Liverpool are among the clubs to have 'requested information' on young Shakhtar Donetsk midfielder Heorhij (Georgiy) Sudakov, making the first move ahead of a potential summer deal for the 21-year-old.

Sudakov is expected to be the next big thing out of the Ukrainian giants, with Mykhaylo Mudryk having joined Chelsea in January 2022 from the same outfit.

Shakhtar Donetsk midfielder Georgiy Sudakov.

According to TuttoJuve's Mirko Di Natale, five Premier League clubs including Liverpool have been keeping tabs on Sudakov, who has grabbed three goals and an assist in 14 top flight outings and has featured in each of Shakhtar's Europa League and Champions League games.

Also thought to be keen are Arsenal, Manchester CIty, Manchester United and Newcastle United, but any club that signs him will be willing to fork out an eyewatering 100m euros (£85m), which is reportedly where his release clause stands.

For that money, scout Ben Mattinson believes that any club would be getting one of the best talents that the Ukrainian club have ever produced, claiming that the midfielder is 'the latest top talent they've produced and he may be one of their best', armed with 'quality ball-striking', 'technical ability' and 'press resistance'.

Any move for Sudakov would likely be reliant on departures, with the centre of the pitch clogged up as things stand with all of Ryan Gravenberch, Curtis Jones, Harvey Elliott, Alexis Mac Allister and Dominik Szobozslai fighting it out for spots either side of Wataru Endo.

It would also likely require a major sale given the hefty asking price. However, at just 21-years-old he could be shrewd investment as the Reds gear up for another period of dominance under a new boss.

A spectacular collapse from Western Australia has handed Queensland top spot on the Marsh Cup table.Chasing 268 for victory on a drop-in surface at Metricon Stadium, WA were cruising at 3 for 218 needing 51 from 40 balls with seven wickets in hand. Shaun Marsh and Cameron Bancroft had shared a partnership of 152 before Marsh holed out in the 39th over for 89. But Marcus Stoinis joined Bancroft and the chase appeared under control before Bancroft also holed out recklessly in the deep for 72 to spark a stunning downslide.WA lost 7 for 24 in 28 balls. Hilton Cartwright was run out after Stoinis created a mix up with a yes-no call in the 46th over. Nathan Coulter-Nile chipped the next ball to mid-off to put WA in all sorts of trouble. Stoinis had faced 13 dot balls in his innings of 23 off 29. He picked out Usman Khawaja at cover with a drive struck at catchable height off Michael Neser in the 47th and the game was all but gone.Neser and Mark Steketee took the last three wickets between them in six balls to leave WA bowled out 26 runs short with 11 deliveries left.Earlier, Marnus Labuschagne continued his outstanding form with 87 from 89 balls to underpin Queensland’s total of 268 on a surface that required patience. He entered behind a brilliant platform set by Max Bryant. The youngster smacked eight fours and a six in his 64 from 51 balls during a 97-run opening stand with Khawaja. The innings stalled a touch when Bryant fell, with the Bulls losing 3 for 15. Khawaja was caught behind for a scratchy 31 and then a mix-up between Joe Burns and Labuschagne left Burns stranded, and out for 1.Labuschagne got good support from debutant Bryce Street. Boundaries weren’t easy to come by but the pair accumulated well to set the Bulls up for a competitive total. Neser and Ben Cutting were able to capitalise with some excellent late hitting to lift the total to 268 after Labuschagne holed out in the deep with 14 balls remaining in the innings. Stoinis finished with 4 for 50, claiming three wickets in the final over of the innings. With the result, Queensland leapfrogged WA to reclaim the top spot on the table with three rounds remaining.

Aston Villa target is now "set to say goodbye" to his club this summer

As Aston Villa prepare for the potential of Champions League football next season, Unai Emery's men have already lined up an experienced defender to join the ranks this summer.

Villa excel in spite of crisis in defence

Despite currently sitting fourth in the Premier League table, Villa have not been without their fair share of struggles this season. The Midlands outfit have been without a number of their key players for much of the season and have had to adapt as a result.

The Midlands club have come a long way.

ByTom Cunningham Mar 24, 2024

Tyrone Mings was Villa's first casualty of the season with the 31-year-old stretchered off during the Villans' opening match against Newcastle. It transpired that the defender had suffered an anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injury that means that he will not return until pre-season at the earliest.

Mings' usual partner in the centre of defence, Ezri Konsa, has also suffered injuries of his own, with the Englishman spraining his knee in February, only just returning in recent weeks. Konsa spent much of his time on the treatment table at Villa Park joined by Pau Torres. The Spanish centre back missed the first month of 2024 due to injury and has only managed to return to regular action in recent weeks.

With the clear issues plaguing Villa's defence in mind, it is clear as to why Emery is now eyeing up a move for a seasoned European defender.

Hermoso to say "goodbye" to Madrid this summer

As first reported by Sport Witness, it is claimed that Aston Villa are set to open negotiations for Spanish defender Mario Hermoso. The Villans have boasted a long-standing interest in bringing the 28-year-old to the West Midlands with the side intending to open negotiations with the central defender very soon.

This latest development suggests that Hermoso has decided on his future, with the player reportedly "set to say goodbye" to the Spanish capital this summer. The 28-year-old is out of contract at the end of the season and has attracted suitors from across Europe.

Aston Villa transfer target Mario Hermoso in action for Atletico Madrid.

Joining Villa in the pursuit for Hermoso are Italian giants Juventus and Inter Milan, however previous reports suggest that Unai Emery's side are leading the charge to secure his services. With Villa looking set to compete in the continent's premier competition for the first time in over four decades, bringing a man who has made 28 Champions League appearances would be far from the worst idea.

If Villa can tempt Hermoso to move this summer it would represent a major coup for the Midlands outfit. Not only would Villa be acquiring a player with bags of experience at the highest level, but they would also possess a defender that slots into Emery's style of play with ease.

As shown in the table above, Hermoso is a central defender who is as comfortable starting attacks as he is stopping them. In a modern game in which the top sides rely heavily on having defenders who can carry and progress the ball, you would find few better options than the Atletico Madrid man.

With Villa's transfer spending potentially hamstrung by financial fair play regulations, bringing in a defender of Hermoso's quality for free would be an incredible bit of business for NSWE.

Rashid Khan, Phil Salt lift unbeaten Adelaide Strikers to top of the table

The Melbourne Renegades remained at the bottom of the points table after suffering their fourth loss in a row

The Report by Sreshth Shah29-Dec-2019On a difficult batting surface, the packed Sunday crowd at the Docklands witnessed two enterprising half-centuries from Phil Salt and Aaron Finch, but a back-breaking 13th over in the Melbourne Renegades chase saw them succumb to a fourth defeat in a row, this time against the Adelaide Strikers. The Strikers’ win lifted them to the top of the BBL points table while defending champions Renegades remained at the bottom. The match also witnessed a bizarre moment when umpire Greg Davidson stole the spotlight in the 17th over of the chase. With Rashid Khan appealing for a plumb lbw against Beau Webster, Davidson raised his finger towards his head before pulling it back and scratching his nose instead. The Strikers fielders, who were already celebrating, were left dumbfounded while Webster had to turn around after beginning his walk towards the pavilion. But in the end, the moment did not cost the Strikers much.Getty Images

Salt repays the faithAfter scores of 0, 2 and 14 in his first three games for the Strikers, Salt’s chances to impress were running out. But he made amends on Sunday, thanks in part to the width offered by Harry Gurney and Richard Gleeson early on. He struck seven consecutive fours off seven legal deliveries across the third and fourth overs, preferring the midwicket region in particular. He pushed on after Jake Weatherald’s dismissal to Kane Richardson for 6, and helped the Strikers to 1 for 58 after six overs. Runs flowed for Salt in the company of Alex Carey when the quick bowlers were on, but the introduction of spin from both ends turned the screws on them. Soon after Salt reached his fifty in 23 balls, he was caught and bowled by legspinner Cameron Boyce for a 26-ball 54.Spin, Richardson lead Renegades fightbackOnce the in-form Jonathan Wells joined Carey in the ninth over, the Strikers relied mainly on singles and twos as they couldn’t find the boundary as frequently as they would have liked, with the unusually slow outfield playing tricks with the batsmen. Dan Christian and Will Sutherland, playing his first game of the season, bowled tidy spells and the lack of boundaries eventually got the better of the Strikers’ batsmen. Carey holed out to deep midwicket off Boyce for 41 in the 17th over, and Wells followed in the next over when he was caught off Richardson at the long-on boundary.Khan’s promotion over Cameron White in the batting order boosted the Strikers’ run rate. He swung hard against the fast bowlers at the death, finding top edges that flew over the boundary. He struck Richardson for two fours and as many sixes for a 16-ball 25, but the Strikers could manage only 6 for 155. Three wickets in his second spell saw Richardson finish with 4 for 33, his second four-for in three games.Unlucky 13th for RenegadesA second fifty in a row from Finch set the base well for the Renegades chase. After Sam Harper fell for an 14-ball 11, Finch found his groove against the fast bowlers, especially Cameron Valente. He used the bottom hand to shovel boundaries across the sluggish outfield. Finch reached his half-century off 38 balls on the first ball of the 13th over, but things changed remarkably in the next five deliveries.First came Khan’s brilliance from point. Finch looked to pinch a single, but Khan’s rapid throw brought the stumps down at the non-striker’s end to send the Renegades captain back. Next ball, Marcus Harris flicked Wes Agar’s length delivery to the fielder at deep midwicket. The horror over for the Renegades ended when Christian was run-out for a duck courtesy Salt’s direct hit from mid-on. In the space of five balls, the Renegades were reduced from 2 for 88 to 5 for 89.With the middle order well and truly exposed, the Strikers captain Carey brought Khan back for his second spell, and Sutherland failed to pick his googly and was bowled for 1 in the 15th over. Two overs later came the incident with umpire Davidson, and at the end of Khan’s spell, the Renegades needed 40 off 18.Webster teases the home fansWith the Renegades six down and needing north of 13 per over in the last three overs, the responsibility to see the team through fell on Webster, the last recognised batsman in the side. Making full use of the reprieve in Khan’s over, Webster clattered 14 in the 18th over off Peter Siddle and brought the equation down to 26 from 12. But he failed to repeat it in the 19th as Agar went full and wide to concede only three runs. Valente – defending 22 in the final over – closed the game out for the Strikers with two wickets. Salt aptly took the winning catch off the final ball of the innings, but Khan collected the Player-of-the-Match award for his runs, the Finch run-out and his 2 for 15 from four overs.
