Arsenal losing "superb" £60m gem could be as big a mistake as Gnabry

Arsenal are flying this season and have a real chance to end their two-decade Premier League title drought, but Tuesday night's draw at home to Bayern Munich in the Champions League was far from ideal.

Mikel Arteta's side went into the game as favourites, but brilliant performances from Harry Kane, Leroy Sané and Serge Gnabry punished the Gunners.

While it's always painful for Arsenal fans to watch Kane score at the Emirates due to his previous allegiances, it was probably just as painful watching Gnabry slot home the opener, given that he used to be a Gooner himself before being sold too soon.

Bayern Munich forward Serge Gnabry.

The German's departure is often considered one of the club's worst transfer decisions in recent years, although there is another soon-to-be superstar that Arsenal could rue losing in the past.

Serge Gnabry's post Arsenal career

After years of failing to make an impression at the Emirates and a disastrous loan move to West Bromwich Albion, Gnabry was sold to Werder Bremen in the summer of 2016 for just £4.25m, with one goal and two assists to his name in 18 first-team appearances at Arsenal.

In his first season back in Germany, the Stuttgart-born gem scored 11 goals and provided two assists in 27 games, enough for Munich to step in and spend around €8m – £7m – to secure his signature.

The following season, the German giants sent him out on loan to fellow Bundesliga side TSG Hoffenheim, where he scored ten goals and provided seven assists in 26 appearances.

The 2018/19 season brought with it his first opportunity to impress in a Bayern shirt, and impress he did.

In 42 appearances that year, the former Gooner found the back of the net 13 times and provided nine assists, meaning he averaged a goal involvement every 1.9 games.

The 28-year-old has a seriously impressive haul of 86 goals and 52 assists for FC Hollywood in 235 appearances and has won all there is to win in club football despite suffering consistent injuries over the last five years.

It would be hard to consider Arsenal's decision to sell the incredible winger in 2016 as anything other than a massive mistake, and it looks like something similar might have happened again.

Michael Olise's post Arsenal career

Yes, the potential superstar in question is Crystal Palace winger Michael Olise, who was part of Arsenal's academy system in 2009.

Now, the one thing that the north Londoners can cling to here is that they won't be the only 'big six' club with eggs on their faces if the young Frenchman goes on to have the career that many are expecting him to have. He was also part of Chelsea's youth setup and spent a short period with Manchester City.

The 22-year-old ace got his chance to play first-team football at Reading, making his debut for the senior side in the 2018/19 season. However, he really made a name for himself two years later when he scored seven goals and provided 12 assists in just 44 games for the then-championship club.

It was a campaign that impressed the Eagles, who swooped in with an £8m offer and brought him to Selhurst Park in July 2021, where he has since excelled and shown his previous sides just what they let go.

In his first season with the club, the "superb" gem, as talent scout Jacek Kulig described him, scored four goals and provided eight assists in just 31 appearances. In the following campaign, he added another two goals and 11 assists to his tally in 40 games.

This year has been tough for the Hammersmith-born winger, as injury has seen him miss large chunks of the campaign. However, he has still scored six goals and provided three assists in just 12 games, meaning that when he's playing, he is averaging a goal involvement every 1.3 games.

Ultimately, given how well he has played in the Premier League over the last couple of years, his potential, and the interest from clubs such as Manchester United, it looks like Olise – who has a reported £60m release clause – might just be another Gnabry on Arsenal's track record.

Shikhar Dhawan picks up shoulder injury, doesn't open for India

The opener is part of India’s T20I squad, which is scheduled to fly out tomorrow to New Zealand

India are yet to take a call on Shikhar Dhawan after he left the field clutching his left shoulder during the ODI series decider against Australia in Bengaluru on Sunday.Dhawan fell on his left shoulder in the fifth over of the match as he dived to stop an Aaron Finch drive at cover point. Nitin Patel, the team physio who attended to him, took him off the field.Dhawan was immediately sent for an X-ray. When he returned to India’s dressing room, he was seen with his left arm in a sling. Virat Kohli said at the post-match press conference that Dhawan was in “no position to strike the ball.”A BCCI spokesperson said reports of Dhawan’s scans had been received by the physio and “he will be assessed overnight, before a final update of his injury will be issued”.KL Rahul, who made a match-winning 52-ball 80 from No. 5 in the second ODI in Rajkot, opened instead of Dhawan. His partner Rohit Sharma, incidentally, had also bruised his shoulder while fielding during the Rajkot ODI and was a doubt for the Bengaluru game.In the same game, Dhawan had bruised his ribcage after trying to negate a Pat Cummins delivery, but continued to bat on and make 96 in India’s series-levelling victory. He spent the entire duration of the Australia innings off the field to take care of the injury.Dhawan has hit a purple patch in recent times, scoring 52, 74 and 96 in his three most recent international innings. In November, he picked up a freak injury – “a deep cut on his left knee” – during a Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy T20 game for Delhi against Maharashtra. Originally picked for the series against West Indies, he was later withdrawn as the medical staff felt he needed more time for his stitches to come off and the wound to heal.As things stand, Dhawan is part of India’s T20I squad for the tour of New Zealand starting January 24. India are set to fly out of Bengaluru early on Monday to Auckland via Singapore.

A maioria é corintiano, meu marido é corintiano.

Clement ditches Goldson & Lundstram in predicted Rangers lineup

Glasgow Rangers take a break from Premiership action this weekend as they look to book their place in the Scottish Cup final.

Philippe Clement will lead his side out at Hampden Park against Hearts on Sunday afternoon with the hopes of reaching a second domestic cup final of the season.

Clashes against the Jambos at the national stadium are becoming a recurring theme. The 2022 Scottish Cup final saw the Gers secure a 2-0 win, while they also prevailed in the League Cup semi-final earlier this season, seeing off the Tynecastle side 3-0 before defeating Aberdeen in the final.

Perhaps a break from top-flight action comes at precisely the right time for the Light Blues, as they have failed to win their previous three Premiership matches.

Clement will be expecting a big performance after a woeful display in Dundee during midweek, with changes to the starting XI looking extremely likely.

With this in mind, here's a look at who could be unleashed for Rangers as they travel to Hampden for the third time this season…

1 GK – Jack Butland

Jack Butland

Despite an impressive debut campaign for Rangers, Butland has conceded six goals in his previous three matches and would dearly love another clean sheet against the Jambos.

Across his two Scottish Cup games this season, Butland has conceded zero goals. While Rangers will have to play a lot better on Sunday compared to during the week, if Butland can maintain his recent form, then they will find it hard to get through him.

2 RB – James Tavernier

James Tavernier for Rangers.

The captain, alongside Connor Goldson and John Lundstram, have failed to show the desired leadership qualities when the pressure is on, culminating in the defeat to Ross County and the draw against Dundee.

He may have scored 24 goals and chipped in with ten assists, but if he can't get the club firing over the next few weeks, it won't count for much if they don’t win any of the two remaining trophies of the season.

3 CB – John Souttar

John Souttar

The Scot has been solid in recent weeks, despite some bad results for the Light Blues. Against Dundee, he made three tackles, three clearances and wasn’t dribbled past during the entire game.

Souttar also finished the game with a 90% pass success rate and his distribution from the back will be key to Rangers building momentum against his old side.

He will keep his place in the starting XI, but he will have a different partner…

4 CB – Leon Balogun

Leon Balogun

Goldson will drop to the bench for the semi-final having delivered a few shaky performances recently. Against Dundee, he was given a match rating of just 5/10 for his display by Glasgow World

Balogun has barely featured since suffering a facial injury against Livingston in February, but he should return to the lineup against Hearts at Hampden.

5 LB – Dujon Sterling

Dujon Sterling

Ridvan Yilmaz is still injured, while Borna Barisic simply can't be trusted in a game of this magnitude, indicating that Sterling will retain his place on the left side of the defence.

Against the Dens Park side, the Englishman won four of his six contested duels along with making two key passes, showing his strength in one-on-one battles while also trying to make things happen going forward.

6 CM – Mohamed Diomande

Mohamed Diomande for Rangers.

The Ivorian suffered a thumb injury against Celtic and thus missed the subsequent games against County and Dundee due to undergoing surgery, but Clement will have him available against Hearts.

In his first 12 games, Diomande has scored twice for the Gers and could certainly offer more going forward than Lundstram, who is far too static at the base of the midfield.

7 CM – Nicolas Raskin

Rangers midfielder Nicolas Raskin

At Dens Park, Lundstram lost possession 12 times while being dribbled past on two occasions, failing to offer anything meaningful during the game.

This could see him being dropped for the semi-final as Nico Raskin may come back into the starting XI.

The Belgian has started just three league matches thus far in 2024, being hauled off at half-time in two of them, but it is surely time for him to show Clement exactly what he can do.

8 RW – Abdallah Sima

Abdallah Sima

Usually deployed on the left wing, Sima scored against Celtic a few weeks ago by operating on the right flank, and he will likely start there against Hearts.

Overall, the on-loan star has netted 16 goals in what has been a wonderful temporary spell at Ibrox, emerging as one of their finest attacking players.

If the price is right, could Clement perhaps secure him on a permanent deal this summer?

9 AM – Todd Cantwell

Todd Cantwell

The Englishman will be deployed in his usual number ten slot, but he will have to improve massively against Hearts.

He was hooked after just 56 minutes in midweek following a display which saw him complete just 18 passes, make two key passes and win only one duel throughout his time on the pitch.

Clement will unleash him once again this weekend, and if he can hit top form, Hearts could suffer.

10 LW – Rabbi Matondo

Rangers winger Rabbi Matondo.

The £3m signing from 2022 has scored two stunners in his previous four league matches, which surely merits a start against Hearts.

His goal against Celtic salvaged a point when it looked like a defeat was imminent, but he had been used as a sub during the previous two matches.

If he starts at Hampden, he could terrorise the Hearts backline without a shadow of a doubt.

West Brom could gift “versatile” star one last chance if Johnston leaves

West Bromwich Albion will be thanking their lucky stars that they gambled on signing Celtic loanee Mikey Johnston in the January transfer window, with the slick Hoops winger becoming an instant fans' favourite at his new loan club.

He wasn't quite at his spell-binding best against Sunderland last match, with West Brom falling to a disappointing 1-0 loss in the Championship to Mike Dodds' topsy-turvy Black Cats, but he will still be one of the first names on Carlos Corberan's team-sheet until he moves back to Scotland.

West Brom are already looking for replacements to fill the eventual void left behind by the 24-year-old when he links back up with Brendan Rodgers' side at the end of the campaign, seen in their reported interest of Oxford United winger Josh Murphy.

Yet, this situation with Johnston could offer up a final last chance saloon for this forgotten Baggies man who has starred in spurts out on loan at Cardiff City from down the left wing.

One last chance for forgotten West Brom man

Karlan Grant could well want to come back off his loan spell with the Bluebirds and fight for his spot in Corberan's XI, having shown his quality occasionally in the Welsh capital.

The 26-year-old has helped himself to six goals and three assists from 40 games in all competitions, fading in and out of games under Erol Bulut but impressing all the same in some key moments.

Often deployed as a striker in the West Midlands, Grant switching to playing down the wings for Cardiff predominantly – and mainly the left wing – has seen his game improve in Wales and could give him a final chance to shine back at his parent club subsequently.

Grant's performance against Hull City at the start of this month would have been encouraging viewing for Corberan, the 26-year-old bagging Cardiff's only goal of the contest in a 3-1 defeat but he looked lively and energetic down the channels.

It could be a risk trying to bed Grant back in after it was made abundantly clear to him that his Spanish Baggies manager didn't really want him, but with the news that Johnston might not stick around in the West Midlands past his impactful loan stint, all options should be assessed.

Karlan Grant's West Brom future

Grant was once a well-liked figure at the Hawthorns, tearing Championship defences to pieces with blistering attacking displays.

The 2021/22 season for Grant in a West Brom strip was the former Huddersfield Town man at his vibrant best and also his goalscoring best for the Baggies, firing in 18 strikes from 44 second-tier games before his time in the West Midlands started to go sour.

As can be seen above, Grant has excelled down the left-hand side at West Brom in the past, with the Baggies more than content with sticking by Brandon Thomas-Asante in the centre-forward spot.

Still, with former Baggies player Carlton Palmer praising Grant as a "versatile" player when discussing his original loan switch to Cardiff, there might be a way back for the 26-year-old if West Brom need an additional body up top as well as down the channels.

West Brom forward Karlan Grant.

There will no doubt be a number of crunch talks with Grant this summer over his immediate West Brom future, with one outcome being he is given another shot at redemption in the absence of Johnston.

West Brom could ease Johnston exit with "fantastic" free transfer

West Bromwich Albion will hope this potential incoming is as effective as Mikey Johnston next season.

Moises Henriques' 31-ball 72 ends Melbourne Stars' unbeaten run

The Stars rested two of their leading pace bowlers and Glenn Maxwell held himself back until it was almost gone

The Report by Daniel Brettig20-Jan-2020Melbourne Stars are beatable after all – they just need to give their opponents a generous helping of assistance to do so. The Stars rested two of their leading pace bowlers Nathan Coulter-Nile and Jackson Coleman from the BBL match at the SCG, and then their captain Glenn Maxwell withheld himself from the contest until the Sydney Sixers were defending a required rate of more than 14 an over. The result, which ended the Stars’ winning streak at eight games, also served to strengthen the Sixers’ hold on a place in the tournament finals. They were driven to victory in large part by a percussive innings from the home side’s captain Moises Henriques, who hammered no fewer than eight sixes while adding 114 in 50 balls with the ever-elegant James Vince.Moises Henriques hit a 31-ball 72•Getty Images

Ben Dwarshuis, Tom Curran and Nathan Lyon then played their part with the ball, although it was a halting innings from the out of sorts Nic Maddinson that played a large part in ensuring the Stars would depart Sydney without their ninth win on a row.Sixers halted by lightningOvercast and sultry conditions at the SCG made for a somewhat tacky surface to begin with as the Stars bowled first. Dan Worrall’s opening spell brought some useful sideways movement, though when he pitched up, he slipped obligingly into Daniel Hughes’ hitting zone. It was lightning that first caused a suspension in play, before rain followed as the skies opened up from the west of Sydney – storms that had seen Melbourne and also Canberra drenched in hail stones over the past 24 hours. When the sky cleared, the Sixers were left with 10.5 overs left for 14 in total, with the presence of all 10 wickets in hand offering the possibility of some score enhancement from Duckworth Lewis Stern. Hughes and Josh Philippe were unable to resettle, and fell in the space of the same Sandeep Lamichhane over, bringing Henriques to the middle to join Vince with nine overs remaining.Henriques the hammerIt was “80s night” at the SCG, an intriguing concept for a format of the game that had its origins in the early 2000s. Henriques, though, was to provide the perfect homage with an innings of bludgeoning power that recalled Ian Botham on an afternoon out for Somerset, or perhaps Lance Cairns and his shoulderless bat against Australia at the MCG. His first target was Lamichhane, taking the 11th over of the innings for 24 runs with the help of a couple other clean hits from Vince. Henriques added to the moment by batting without any headgear.Marcus Stoinis gave the Stars a chance with a quick fifty•Getty Images

The replacement pace bowlers Jonathan Merlo and Lance Morris were then taken to task, as 15 and then 26 came from overs 12 and 13. Henriques raced to 72 from 30 balls, with the promise of more in the last. But Worrall returned with another excellent over, slightly reducing the Sixers’ tally by conceding just four and ending Henriques’ stay. Vince’s slipstream 41 had been little less impressive, though both batsmen benefitted from the greasy ball skidding nicely onto the bat.Waiting for MaxwellGiven the steep target and the limited overs available, a promotion for Maxwell to No. 3 or even top of the order might have been under consideration. However, there appeared at least some desire from Maxwell as captain to grant opportunities to others, meaning Hilton Cartwright opened up with Marcus Stoinis. They did well enough, piling on 35 from the opening three overs including a brutal 22 from Jackson Bird’s second, but when Cartwright gloved Dwarshuis behind, the former Sixer Maddinson found himself trying to find form under considerable pressure. What followed was a maiden from Dwarshuis, and then a series of increasingly desperate attempts by Maddinson to hit his way out of trouble until he was bowled by the left-armer for a tortured 16 off 18 balls in the 10th over. By this time the required rate was beyond 14 an over, setting up a scenario that guaranteed either another set of Maxwell fireworks or a vital victory for the Sixers as they sought to firm up their place in the BBL finals.Stoinis fires but too little too lateWith Maxwell momentarily thrown by his receipt of an accidental beamer from Dwarshuis, Stoinis raised his sights with 55 required from 18 balls. Nathan Lyon’s first three balls of the 12th over went four, six, six, but as he looped higher and shorter, Stoinis got underneath one for Henriques to hold a steepling catch. With Nick Larkin now for company, Maxwell tried to rouse himself, but an outlandish 27 were still required off the last over.It was far too many, with Larkin and Maxwell out to skied catches from the first two balls of an over delivered creditably by Curran. The Stars’ winning streak was duly ended at eight games, though it was hard to deduce exactly how much to take out of the result given its various vagaries, not least the shape of the visitors’ batting order.
