4-2-3-1 manager who shocked Ten Hag now a "serious" target for Man Utd job

A manager who recently left Erik ten Hag stunned is a "serious" and “interesting” target for Manchester United this summer, according to a new report.

Man Utd manager latest

The Red Devils and Sir Jim Ratcliffe appear to be planning on making a change in the Old Trafford dugout this summer, with Sky Sports reporter Gianluca Di Marzio saying that a decision has been made to say “goodbye to Ten Hag”. A number of candidates appear to be in the frame to take over, including Thomas Tuchel, Mauricio Pochettino, Kieran McKenna and Roberto De Zerbi.

Man Utd hold talks to sign £85m star to replace Harry Maguire

The Englishman is up for sale.

ByCharlie Smith May 22, 2024

“McKenna is the man of the moment in the football world, in the world of coaches, because he is doing great at Ipswich Town. He is the number one choice at Brighton & Hove Albion (to succeed Roberto De Zerbi), but he has also already spoken to Manchester United. At the end of the season, United will say goodbye to Ten Hag.

“Manchester United will also be looking for a new coach. And their targets are McKenna and Mauricio Pochettino. De Zerbi is also on the list, but he has not been in contact with United in recent days. Apparently, the Red Devils are mainly hoping for McKenna: If he goes to Chelsea, United will go for Pochettino. But what is certain: they are saying goodbye to Ten Hag.”

It had appeared as if Pochettino was an option over the coming weeks for United, but Fabrizio Romano recently disputed links to the Argentine: “As for Pochettino, he is open for a new chapter and he feels absolutely ready for any opportunity. Despite reports of Pochettino being appreciated by some key figures at INEOS, there is nothing to say on Manchester United now for Pochettino.”

Football Insider have now provided what they know about the Argentine and a possible move to Manchester however, and it's a pretty significant update from Romano's claims.

Pochettino a “serious” option for Man Utd job

FI reporter Wayne Veysey shared news from a top Man Utd source, revealing that Pochettino is now a “serious and very interesting” option to become the next Man Utd manager.

It is added from sources that Pochettino, who plays a 4-2-3-1 system, is expected to receive offers to return to management over the coming weeks, with United seeing him as a strong candidate due to his Premier League experience with Southampton, Tottenham and Chelsea.

Chelsea manager Mauricio Pochettino.

The 52-year-old’s departure from Stamford Bridge left Chelsea players in shock, and it looks as if he could be a candidate to take over at England this summer as well, should Gareth Southgate depart after the Euros.

Pochettino’s record against Man Utd is somewhat inconsistent, but his most recent game against the Red Devils left Ten Hag stunned. Chelsea scored twice in stoppage time to win a dramatic top-flight fixture 4-3 back in April, with the Dutchman lamenting his side's decision making and claiming they dominated the game.

£100,000-per-week Tottenham player reaches agreement to leave for Europe

A Tottenham player has already reached an agreement with one European club over joining them this summer, with a Spurs summit and club-to-club talks now set to follow.

Spurs expected to undergo summer overhaul in busy transfer window

Ange Postecoglou has publicly stated that his team need to implement drastic change in the months which lie ahead, with reliable journalists like Fabrizio Romano also expecting Spurs to have a busy transfer window.

Club now likely to sell £34m striker as Tottenham make approach for him

Tottenham finished the Premier League season in fifth, qualifying for the Europa League in their first season minus club-record goalscorer and former superstar Harry Kane, with Postecoglou's high-pressing system winning plenty of admirers along the way.

To back Postecoglou and keep evolving the squad, in an effort to turn Spurs into genuine Premier League contenders over the next few seasons, it is believed chairman Daniel Levy is open to offers for up to a dozen members of the squad (Paul O'Keefe).

These player sales will rid Postecoglou of deadwood and potentially bolster his transfer kitty, as it is believed that Spurs want to seriously invest in fresh faces for multiple positions this summer.

"We've got a lot of work to do still on the squad and I don't think we're anywhere near where we want to be," said Postecoglou on bringing in new players.

"It probably will take a little bit more than three windows to get there, for sure. I certainly don't think we're one or two players away from getting to where I want us to be, nowhere near it. Some of that will be natural evolution. Some of it hopefully means we continue to get the improvement we've had this year from some of our players. If that happens over the next 12 months, then we'll be in a great position.

"But you've got to remember, a lot of our group are in their first year of the Premier League. A good chunk of them have been ever-presents, we need them to keep improving at the rate they are. We've still got a lot of work to do with the squad. I think we're a long way away from having one or two players away from getting where we want to be."

One player who may fetch a fairly decent sum, and doesn't appear to be in Postecoglou's plans moving forward, is midfielder Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg.

Hojbjerg agrees to join Fenerbahce from Tottenham

The Dane played a lot of top-flight games last season, but the overwhelming majority of his appearances came from the bench, as he started just eight league matches.

Hojbjerg has been heavily linked with a Spurs exit since last September, and now Turkish news outlet Milligazete (via Sport Witness) claim Hojbjerg has reached an outline agreement to join Fenerbache after talks with their sporting director.

Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg.

The £100,000-per-week midfielder, branded "sensational" in the media for some of his performances, could reunite with Jose Mourinho – and it is claimed that club-to-club talks over the transfer will happen soon.

Situation normal as Pakistan prepare to rise to England challenge again

Azhar Ali’s men start as underdogs, their preferred role in their favourite hunting ground

The Preview by Danyal Rasool04-Aug-2020Big pictureIt’s almost like a normal English cricket summer, isn’t it? England lost the first Test yet again but came battling back in the series, something they do far more frequently than any other Test side. The batting order was rejigged regularly and debated in increasingly repetitive terms. Ben Stokes came good, and James Anderson and Stuart Broad continued to take wickets. Their detractors kept reminding everyone with indefatigable banality these were only home wickets, as most people smiled and nodded. The rain made a persistent enough nuisance of itself to send every Test to the final session on the fifth day, which, of course, lit the touchpaper for the four-day Test debate.Coming into the Pakistan series, England have the distinct, irreplaceable advantage of having played three Tests against high-quality opposition, and no amount of intra-squad matches or net sessions can quite match that for Pakistan. The games against West Indies allowed England to tinker, particularly with the bowling attack, which unearthed an embarrassment of fast-bowling riches, with Broad, Jofra Archer and Anderson all missing a Test without the attack appearing any less menacing. In addition to those three, they have Sam Curran, Mark Wood and Chris Woakes to call upon.Even the top order, which has never really been the same since Andrew Strauss retired eight years ago, showed flashes of encouraging promise against West Indies. Openers Dom Sibley and Rory Burns combined for 460 runs across the three Tests, each batsman averaging over 45. Lower down, Joe Root may not have got the runs he’d desired but Ben Stokes more than made up for that, scoring over 90 between dismissals and demonstrating he was an automatic pick even if a niggle keeps him from bowling, as it well might in the first Test. Jos Buttler got a half-century. Hell, even Broad did.Pakistan, meanwhile, have hung around the UK since before that West Indies series began, keeping confined amongst themselves and, by historical standards, generating impressively little gossip fodder. The conversations in the squad have revolved entirely around tactics, team combination, player form, and, of course, whether or not Fawad Alam will finally get to play. The side last played a Test in February, with no competitive cricket on offer since the PSL was put on hold before the semi-finals. There has almost been an air of – whisper it softly should you dare – professionalism about how the build-up has gone.England has always seemed to Pakistan a barometer of the state of its cricket; performances here, brilliant or disastrous, have been accepted as representative of the quality of the side. Pakistan tours to England have served as the most useful waypoints for a digestible history of the nation’s cricket, encapsulating most of the recurring themes so distinctly redolent of Pakistan cricket. From perhaps Pakistan’s greatest underdog moment in 1954 to the domination of the fast bowlers in the 80s and 90s, bitter controversy in 2006 and disgrace in 2010, Pakistan’s presence in England has always seemed to put fate on notice. They will hope the headlines they make remain strictly confined to the back pages, and with the side they have, there’s no reason that won’t happen. Babar Azam has only ever played one Test in England, and is a vastly improved Test cricketer from the one whose fluent half-century was ended by injury two years ago. In Shan Masood, Pakistan have found an opener whose technique and temperament both look to have finally come into their own, and he has the runs to prove it. Azhar Ali, appointed captain last year, also has at his disposal arguably the most exciting Pakistan fast-bowling trio in a decade; Shaheen Afridi, Mohammad Abbas and Naseem Shah all boast match-winning Test performances in their nascent careers.Ali’s side may lack experience and be decisive underdogs, but when has that ever stopped Pakistan in England? Joe Root’s, in turn, may well be heavily fancied, but that isn’t a tag they have worn as lightly as they might have wished.Naseem Shah bowls under the watchful eye of Waqar Younis•Getty Images

Form guide(last five completed matches, most recent first)England WWLWW (last five completed matches, most recent first)
Pakistan WWDLLIn the spotlightJoe Root is almost guaranteed to be the most classical Test batsman on either side in just about any series, but that isn’t quite the case this time around. Opposition vice-captain Babar Azam has seen his red-ball career flourish just as Root’s phenomenal career numbers have begun going the other way. You could almost trace the trend to the last time Pakistan toured England, when a 23-year old Babar played his only Test in England. Since that encounter, Root has averaged 38.48 between dismissals, nearly ten runs down on his overall career average. Babar’s numbers, meanwhile, have soared, his average a stratospheric 68.52 over the same period, 23 runs up from his career mean. The Pakistan batsman has outscored his English counterpart in the centuries department, too, five to Root’s four in fewer than half the innings. There was talk of the famous Fab Four taking on a fifth member in Babar, but the England skipper will have to better his most recent numbers to ensure he doesn’t drop out of it altogether.Team newsEngland have announced an unchanged 14-man squad to the one that was chosen for the deciding Test against West Indies. Root suggested in his pre-match press conference one of Mark Wood or Jofra Archer would play, while Stuart Broad’s place in the playing party appears certain. The final balance of the side will be determined by Ben Stokes’ ability to bowl, having been managing a quad niggle during the Windies series. If England err on the side of caution, then Zak Crawley will again be the fall guy, with the rest of the middle order moving up one slot.England (possible) 1 Dom Sibley, 2 Rory Burns, 3 Joe Root (capt), 4 Ben Stokes, 5 Ollie Pope, 6 Jos Buttler (wk), 7 Sam Curran/Chris Woakes, 8 Dom Bess, 9 Stuart Broad, 10 Mark Wood/Jofra Archer, 11 James AndersonHead coach Misbah-ul-Haq looks to be leaning towards playing two legspinners, which would seem to rule out Fawad Alam. It would, however, leave the lower middle order somewhat vulnerable, in spite of Shadab Khan’s competence with the bat, and with a 16-man squad, there’s plenty of flexibility to work around it.Pakistan (possible): 1 Shan Masood, 2 Abid Ali, 3 Azhar Ali (capt), 4 Babar Azam, 5 Asad Shafiq, 6 Fawad Alam/Shadab Khan, 7 Mohammad Rizwan(wk), 8 Yasir Shah, 9 Shaheen Afridi, 10 Mohammad Abbas, 11 Naseem ShahPitch and conditionsEngland were forced to practise indoors on the eve of the game due to rain, and there is more expected for the first couple of days. The weather is expected to brighten up over the weekend, though. The fast bowlers on either side in the West Indies series found plenty of swing at Old Trafford, with specialist offspinners Rakheem Cornwall and Dom Bess playing less of a role than both sides’ respective selectors might have hoped.Stats and trivia Of the 10 Tests Pakistan have won in England since 1987, eight were played in London. Old Trafford, the venue of the first Test, played host to one Pakistan Test win in this period (in 2001), with the other success coming at Headingley in 1987. Pakistan’s other two victories in England were also in London, at The Oval in 1954 and Lord’s in 1982. James Anderson needs 11 wickets to become the first fast bowler to 600 Test dismissals. Anderson has only ever taken 11 wickets in a Test once – against Pakistan in 2010 Quotes”He’s very skilful, looks like he has a lot of pace. You can speak to as many people as you want, but until you get out there and face him, you can’t really know what it’s going to be like”

Zak Crawley says reaching a century makes all the hard work 'worth it'

Young batsman describes ‘unbelievable feeling of elation’ as long, lonely nets flash before his eyes

George Dobell21-Aug-2020Zak Crawley experienced “an unbelievable feeling of elation” the moment he reached a maiden Test century on the first day of the final Test against Pakistan.Crawley, the 22-year-old from Kent, has earned a reputation as one of the hardest workers in game. But the moment he reached the milestone, he says his career “flashed before my eyes” and he knew all the hard work was worth it.”I could see the nets,” he said. “I could see all the times I’ve gone to hit balls on my own. You do question yourself when you’re in a run of ducks.”But it all seemed worth it. It was a feeling that it was all worth it.”It’s the best feeling I’ve had on a cricket field. Just how I imagined it. It was an unbelievable feeling of elation out there and it makes you want it more. Hopefully there are a few more to come after this.”Zak Crawley eases into a drive•Getty Images

Crawley, who had only three first-class centuries heading into this game, admitted he experienced some nervous moments as the milestone approached; not least when the tea interval was taken when he had 97.”I was really nervous,” he said. “It was good I didn’t see tea coming because I might have tried to play a big shot. I wouldn’t have chosen to be on 97 at tea.”As it was, he brought up his hundred in the first over after the break with a punch through the covers off Mohammad Abbas.”I was on 99 with one ball of the over left and I didn’t want to have to wait an over on 99,” he said. “So I was determined to play a shot to that ball.”To find the gap and to run two and come back knowing I had my first Test hundred… I was trying to stay calm but inside I was absolutely buzzing.”Early in Crawley’s career, he realised he had improvement to make against spin bowling, so he paid for himself to travel to Mumbai where he took part in a training camp. At other times, he has travelled to Perth to work with renowned batting coach, ‘Noddy’ Holder and spent a couple of winters playing Grade cricket.”I try to go over to Perth every year,” he said, “I’ve been four or five times. I’ve enjoyed working with Noddy. He’s a brilliant coach and I love the way he talks about the game.”I do as much work as I can with Rob Key over the summer. I try to see him once a month to stay in check. He has a great cricket brain.”I did go out to India, but most of the lads have done that. I’m no different. There’s been a lot of hard work, but I wouldn’t swap it for anything, I’ve enjoyed it. It feels worth it now.”

Maresca excited to work with £60,000-per-week Chelsea ace, really rates him

New Chelsea head coach Enzo Maresca is said to be excited by the prospect of working with a £60,000-per-week member of his squad and is believed to rate him extremely highly.

Chelsea announce Maresca as new head coach to replace Pochettino

It's been common knowledge for quite some time that Maresca has been lined up to succeed Mauricio Pochettino, but the west Londoners officially confirmed the Italian's arrival from Leicester City on Monday.

Chelsea ready to bid £85m for "extraordinary" ace to lead Maresca's project

He would be an exciting addition to the Blues’ squad.

ByTom Coates Jun 3, 2024

After guiding Leicester to the Championship title and automatic promotion at the first time of asking, Maresca has swapped the King Power for Stamford Bridge and will commence his new role on July 1.

Maresca put pen to paper on a five-year deal with the option of a further year, with journalist Ben Jacobs sharing further background on why he was the "unanimous" choice for Chelsea's board in a thread on X.

"Chelsea confirm Enzo Maresca as their new head coach. It’s a five-year contract with a club option of a further year. Former Chelsea goalkeeper Willy Caballero joins as Maresca’s assistant. Maresca was the unanimous choice from Chelsea’s leadership," wrote Jacobs.

"Maresca stood out because of his possession-based style. Experience in English football seen as key. Chelsea struck by his 'champions mentality'. Maresca is also understood to have displayed extensive squad knowledge at interview and was impressed with the talent and balance at the club.

"Maresca's thirst for knowledge impressed Chelsea's hierarchy. He even started watching last season's games whilst on holiday in Marbella ahead of getting the job. Maresca has already asked for data access to provide performance analysis on every player from youth level to the the first team, as well as full details of everyone working at Cobham. This meticulous approach was the same at Leicester."

Reports suggest that Maresca is planning to make Cole Palmer the vocal point of his Chelsea side, as the former Man City backroom coach plots to build his own-look Blues side after Pochettino's reign.

He's also set to have a say in the transfer market, with Maresca said to be a big fan of Inter Milan striker Lautaro Martinez for his forward line.

Maresca can't wait to work with Chelsea keeper Robert Sanchez

Now, as per Fabrizio Romano, it is believed that Maresca has taken a real liking to £60,000-per-week goalkeeper Robert Sanchez.

The former Brighton ace signed last summer and has suffered his fair share of criticism following his debut campaign at the club, but Maresca really rates Sanchez and can't wait to work with him at Chelsea.
