Skipper Ben Brown scored his 20th first-class century as Sussex’s LV= Insurance County Championship match against Glamorgan at Hove ended in a draw.Brown got to three figures with a six off Tim van der Gugten and immediately declared Sussex’s second innings on 263 for 6, setting Glamorgan a target of 275 to win in 51 overs.Off-spinner Jack Carson took three wickets and there were still ten overs remaining when Kiran Carlson top-edged a sweep to leave Glamorgan 131 for 5, but Andrew Salter and Dan Douthwaite stood firm, taking their side to 154 for 5 when the players shook hands after two balls of the final over.Stuart Meaker had removed opener David Lloyd for 17 in his fourth over with the new ball, courtesy of a smart catch at second slip by Aaron Thomason, and after tea Carson took his tally of Championship wickets to 31, making him Sussex’s leading-wicket taker in the competition.Colin Ingram (27), Billy Root (12) and Carlson (23) all perished to catches by fielders clustered around the bat while opener Joe Cooke, who faced 89 balls for his 19, failed to pick Will Beer’s googly. But Salter, promoted from No.10, stood firm, absorbing 58 balls in his 19 not out. Both sides took 12 points, meaning Sussex will finish either fifth or sixth while Glamorgan have the chance to end third if they can beat Northamptonshire in their next match starting on Sunday.Related

Brown had earlier extended his fifth-wicket stand with Ali Orr to 100 before opener Orr’s impressive innings ended the ball after they had reached their milestone when he was leg before to David Lloyd’s inswinger for 80, made off 193 balls with ten fours. It was an excellent effort by the 19-year-old left-hander who has made half-centuries in his first two Championship innings.Dan Ibrahim (17) was leg before hitting across the line at van der Gugten but Brown and Beer upped the tempo after lunch, adding 65 for the seventh wicket in 11.1 overs as the field spread and Glamorgan waited for the declaration.Brown’s second hundred of the season came off 134 balls, the second 50 taking 53 deliveries. He hit six fours and deposited van der Gugten over midwicket before going to his century later in the same over. Glamorgan’s most successful bowler was van der Gugten, who finished with three for 44.
Liverpool is abuzz with Arne Slot's side's imminent Premier League clash against Brentford, who will give Anfield a first taste of action for the season, but sporting director Richard Hughes will have most of his attention on the week ahead in the market.
The 2024 summer transfer window has entered its final week, and Liverpool remain the only outfit across Europe's top seven leagues to have refrained some strengthening their first team.
Still, Fabrizio Romano has hinted that the Reds could be set to bring in a new signing or two before the end of the month, with Slot inheriting an abundantly talented squad from Jurgen Klopp but one that fell by the wayside toward the end of the 2023/24 campaign and could use some fresh life.
Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp bows out
Should Joe Gomez be sold, Liverpool will need a new defender, with the 27-year-old attracting interest from a host of Premier League outfits and being valued at £45m by his club. Sepp van den Berg has already completed a £25m transfer to Brentford and the perfect new arrival might just be in the pipeline.
Liverpool transfer news
As per Football Insider, Liverpool are monitoring Bayer Leverkusen's Piero Hincapie, with the young centre-back having been on the club's radar for quite some time.
Hincapie was a core part of the Leverkusen side that completed an invincible domestic campaign last year, winning the Bundesliga and DFB-Pokal titles, and would be a significant coup for Slot's side.
Bayer Leverkusen defender Piero Hincapie.
The 22-year-old is understood to have a £50m price tag but Liverpool's lack of activity throughout the summer months suggests that the funds are available to complete such a deal, with outgoings strengthening Anfield's financial accord even more.
What Piero Hincapie would bring to Liverpool
FSG's natural hesitance to launch high-money bids for players that wouldn't immediately walk into the first team is a well-known fact on Merseyside, but Hincapie could prove to be an exception to that rule.
While he's not the finished product and would perhaps not displace Ibrahima Konate or Jarell Quansah as captain Virgil van Dijk's undisputed, nailed-on partner in central defence, there's enough there to speak of the importance of getting the deal done.

As you can see, he has much to learn before he is playing with the kind of polished, world-class swagger of Van Dijk, but he still impressed with his ball-playing quality and of course, featured in a defence that concluded the term without tasting defeat – and winning the league trophy besides.
Also, as per FBref, the Ecuadorian already ranks among the top 9% of centre-backs across Europe's top five leagues over the past year for assists, the top 14% for shot-creating actions, the top 8% for passes attempted, the top 14% for progressive passes, the top 1% for progressive carries and the top 14% for tackles made per 90.
He has the properties that Slot admires, capable of playing through the lines and driving forward himself to instigate attacking sequences and add to the central overload that the Dutch tactician loves to charge his swift-passing, control-focused brand of football.
Tipped to become “one of the world's best centre-backs” by journalist and U23 scout Antonio Mango – who also dubbed him an "absolute beast" – Hincapie would be a wonderful addition to the team, and would actually be the perfect replacement for Gomez.
Joe Gomez upgrade
Bayer Leverkusen have picked up where they left off under Xabi Alonso, winning the DFL Supercup before scoring a last-gasp winner in their gripping Bundesliga opener against Borussia Monchengladbach on Friday night.
Hincapie has already proven his qualities and continual growth toward the upper end of Europe's defensive titans, winning 80% of his duels last time out.
Gomez offers a defensive versatility that is astounding in its scope, having featured across the backline under Klopp last year, but this is a new era and Hincapie offers greater distribution, as well as carrying some of the talents that Gomez offers too.
Liverpool defender Joe Gomez
Hincapie, moreover, is a competent left-back, impressing when moonlighting down the flank in the past. Liverpool have Trent Alexander-Arnold and his electric understudy Conor Bradley on the other side of the backline, so it's hard to imagine that Gomez would receive too much game time in his natural position.
The England international also won only 48% of his ground duels in the Premier League last season. While Gomez showcased many redeeming qualities after a wretched 2022/23 campaign, earning a Three Lions recall and leading writer Joel Rabinowitz to praise his “renaissance”, he's not irreplaceable.
Hincapie's 5.14 progressive passes per 90 over the past 12 months also stands above Gomez's 4.88 per 90, emphasising further suitability within the new way of life at Liverpool.
Gomez is also the club's longest-serving player after joining from Charlton Athletic for £3m as a teenager in 2015, so perhaps the time is right to part ways and issue in some new blood.
Hincapie is a talented player with so much potential yet to be realised, and given that he offers the kind of style that enhance Slot's system, it seems like a bit of a no-brainer, with Liverpool in need of at least one signing to ensure that the new era goes off without a hitch.

“People are starting to realise that uncapped bowlers are good enough to take responsibilities of death bowling”

For Harshal Patel, being asked to bowl at the death in a T20 game is to be in a “privileged position”, one that he says he has worked hard to earn after being a bit of a journeyman in the IPL since 2012. The first shot at the new responsibility has gone well for him, as he returned 5 for 27 for the Royal Challengers Bangalore against the Mumbai Indians, but Patel knows, and understands, that it won’t always be so – “it goes the other way around as well at times”.”It is one of those aspects of the game where you are in a position to win the game for your team and is a privileged position to be in,” he said in a virtual interaction with the media on Tuesday. “Obviously, it goes the other way around as well at times – it can dent your confidence – but I look at as a privilege and a positive.”Death bowling is something I’ve worked on for a while for a long period of time, and I am confident enough now to take all that practice into the game.”Related
How Harshal found a new gear (with a little help from Ponting)
Harshal Patel goes from doing bit roles to being the main man
He did that in the opening game of IPL 2021, not only returning a five-for, but bowling three of his four overs and picking up all five wickets in the final five overs of Mumbai Indians’ innings. While Patel has shone the brightest, he hasn’t been the only non-international Indian quick to be given the big job this season. The Delhi Capitals bowled Avesh Khan against the Chennai Super Kings, and the Rajasthan Royals and the Punjab Kings threw the ball to Chetan Sakariya and Arshdeep Singh respectively during their contest on Monday.A bit of a trend? Or just a matter of being early days of teams trying to get their combinations right?”Most of the teams have started looking at what the bowler is doing during the practice games and how good they are at their execution regardless of what their stature is – whether they are capped, uncapped, international players and so on,” Patel said. “But I think it is a good trend, which people are starting to realise that even the uncapped bowlers are good enough to take responsibilities of death bowling, and I think we’ll see more of that going forward.”Patel’s victims last Friday were Hardik Pandya, Ishan Kishan, Krunal Pandya, Kieron Pollard and Marco Jansen, all strikes where he outsmarted the batsmen. Patel explained that bowling to Virat Kohli and AB de Villiers, among others, in the nets has given him the required confidence of landing it right in matches.”Every time you bowl to these greats of the game in the nets, you realise that the margin of error is very little,” he said. “That allows you to become more and more concise in your execution, and when you execute against these guys then it gives you a lot of confidence; if you can do it against the best, then you can do it in any game situation.”Away from the IPL, Patel had a most impressive 2019-20 domestic season, with 52 wickets and 292 runs in the first-class Ranji Trophy for his state Haryana, to go with 374 runs and 19 wickets in the T20 Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy. But he couldn’t quite squeeze into the Delhi Capitals playing XI. He managed just five matches for them last season, and acknowledged that the move back to the Royal Challengers has been a big positive.”I have more opportunities here [with the Royal Challengers], and am being put into difficult situations, and thus have more opportunity to showcase my skill,” he said. “[The move] is a welcome decision from my side because I knew that with KG [Kagiso Rabada] and [Anrich] Nortje in that team, I wasn’t going to get the opportunity that I am getting here.”So it’s always great to be in a team where I can showcase my skills and where I have the privilege of being put into difficult situations. When you come out of those difficult situations, you grow as a cricketer.”

Aston Villa put in an enterprising performance last weekend against West Ham United to get the news season off to a dream start. The Villans came away from a tough trip to the London Stadium with all three points thanks to an impressive 2-1 victory, in a huge season for the club; they will play in the Champions League for the first time since its rebrand in 1992.
Indeed, it was goals from debutant Amadou Onana and Jhon Duran, who has been embroiled in a summer of transfer controversy, that gave them the win. The Columbian was close to joining the Hammers during the transfer window, but a move did not materialise. Those goals came either side of a Lucas Paqueta penalty, but Villa held on to get all three points.
Aston Villa striker Jhon Duran
The Villans’ first home game of the season, on Saturday evening, will see them host Arsenal in one of the toughest fixtures of the season. The Gunners will be hoping they can finally break their streak of consecutive second-place finishes and win the Premier League this season.
However, matchdays are not just the sole focus at Villa Park for the moment. With the transfer window still open until the 30th of August, Villa may well look to add to their eight signings and have actually been linked to one of the Gunners’ players.
Aston Villa target Arsenal defender
The player in question here is Arsenal and Scotland international left-back Kieran Tierney. The former Celtic star has struggled to find a permanent place in Mikel Arteta’s side over the past few seasons, and could now leave the club this summer.
According to a report from Caught Offside, the Villans are one of the sides linked with the Scot this summer. The report states that there is ‘confirmed interest in the player’ from his former manager in North London, Unai Emery.
Arsenal defender Kieran Tierney.
However, the former Celtic defender has interest from right across Europe. The Bhoys are one of the clubs interested in bringing their former defender back to the club, with Premier League side Newcastle also considering a move, as well as Spanish trio Girona, Sevilla and Valencia.
In terms of a price for Tierney, the 27-year-old is reportedly available anywhere between a fee of £25m and £30m, a price that ‘will be considered suitable’ by technical director Edu and his colleagues.
Why Tierney would be a good signing
Last season, Tierney had a loan spell in La Liga, at Spanish outfit Real Sociedad. However, it was an incredibly frustrating campaign for the defender, who picked up three different injuries, meaning he played just 27 games in all competitions. 20 of those appearances came in the Spanish top flight, with the Scot grabbing two assists along the way.
Kieran Tierney
Should he make the move to Villa Park, it would see a reunion with former boss Emery. The Spaniard – who signed the defender on a £25m deal from Celtic in 2019 – coached him for just nine games, but the 27-year-old still managed to get two assists, and it could certainly be considered a short but sweet partnership.
However, Emery would not be the only reunion for Tierney should he make the move to Villa Park. He would, of course, get the chance to play with Villans captain and Scotland teammate John McGinn. The left-back has played with the 29-year-old midfielder 40 times in total for Scotland, and the pair have combined for four goals in that time.

McGinn plays as a false winger on the left-hand side for Villa, tucking inside when his side have the ball to act as a number 10. Should he link up with the Arsenal defender at club level, it would see the pair form a partnership down the left wing, with Tierney having the licence to overlap his international teammate down the left-hand side.
This could be the start of a deadly partnership between the pair, who already have the foundations of a relationship on the pitch thanks to their exploits together for Scotland. Given the fact they have already combined for four goals, it could be a fruitful partnership from a goalscoring point of view, too.
Scotland left-back Kieran Tierney.
The 29-year-old Villa captain was impressive in front of goal last season. He played 35 times in the top flight last term, finding the back of the net on six occasions, and grabbing four assists. It is certainly a run of goalscoring form he could improve on further should he continue the productive relationship with Tierney.
Tierney was described as a “warrior” by legendary left-back and Arsenal invincible Ashley Cole, and for around £30m, could be a smart pickup for Villa before next Friday’s deadline.
Although he has struggled with injuries throughout his career, the left-back is still a player of great quality. Given his experience playing under Emery, and established partnership with McGinn, he could be an astute signing by the Villans as the deadline fast approaches.

The allrounder is working her way back at international level but has an outstanding record in the 50-over format
Andrew McGlashan01-Apr-2021Meg Lanning expects Ellyse Perry to play a more significant role in the ODI series against New Zealand than she did in the T20Is, but also stressed the importance of building a varied attack around the young pace bowlers who are coming through. On her return to international cricket after the hamstring injury which ended her T20 World Cup last year, Perry batted at No. 6 and bowled just one over in the two completed matches. Her innings in Hamilton alongside Ash Gardner was a useful contribution to the partnership that got Australia over the line, but it has been her limited role with the ball that has sparked debate.”She’s played a massive role for us particularly in ODIs over the last five years and has an exceptional record,” Lanning said. “I dare say she will play a bigger role, there’s more overs to bowl as well. She’ll get her chance throughout the series.”People who can bat long periods of time and make those match-winning contributions are extremely important to have in your side. Ellyse has shown over a long period of time that she can do that so she’ll play a really big role for us.”Related

Her bowling returns in the WBBL and WNCL were underwhelming and in the latter competition she was working on some tweaks to her run-up which have taken time to settle. She took a wicket in the one over handed to her in Napier but significantly was not given the last of the match when New Zealand needed nine to win.On the studio coverage prior to the final match, Mel Jones suggested that in a shortened game Perry could be surplus to requirements. Ultimately she was picked in the XI, becoming the most capped T20I player in the process, but it highlighted that the next phase of Perry’s career could require an evolution, especially in the shortest format.”The interesting one for me is…there’s a bit of weather around and if the overs get reduced a bit I’m looking at this team line-up and I actually think it’s Ellyse Perry that’s coming out,” Jones said on . “She’s batting at six, normally you average seven or eight deliveries if it’s reduced, and if they aren’t going to use her with the ball who do you bring in.”It’s just that anomaly where her bowling hasn’t quite hit the straps yet so Meg isn’t turning to her as a first choice.”The allrounder has made tweaks to her run-up in recent months•Getty Images
Fellow analyst Elyse Villani added: “Not sure how many times Ellyse Perry’s name would have been up in terms of potentially not playing so it’s not something Australia have really had to deal with before.”As it was, rain prevented a chance of seeing whether Perry would have an impact on a 13-over game, but the three-match ODI series takes her back to the format where she is ranked the No. 1 allrounder and holds a batting average of 52.10 – she has not batted lower than No. 4 in an ODI since 2014 – and where bowling-wise there could be a chance to settle into a spell.”Ideally if you are an option in all three phases of the game then that allows you to bowl more overs,” Lanning said of Perry’s T20 role. “That’s something we’ve spoken with Ellyse about, think she’s been working really hard on her bowling and consistency coming back from a serious injury…but ultimately for me it just comes down to match-ups and the game situation in terms of who I go to. She’s definitely there as an option.”The fast bowling side of things is the area at the moment where we’ve got a couple of new players in Tayla [Vlaeminck] and Darcie [Brown]. It’s been really exciting to see. Ellyse still has a really big role to play for us but the more variety we can have that will play a big role for us moving forward. So it’s been great to see those young players take the game by scruff of the neck and really be aggressive.”Ellyse is extremely competitive…she works extremely hard on her game and I’m sure she’d love to be batting higher and bowling more overs. She’s doing everything she can to get herself into that position. It’s been great to have her back, she’s very experienced and hope to see the best of her in the one-day series.”
