Biggest deal since Rice: Arsenal chasing move to sign their next Henry

Over the last couple of years, the Arsenal hierarchy have splashed the cash in the transfer market to hand boss Mikel Arteta the best chance of being a success in the Premier League.

This summer alone, the club forked out nearly £100m in new signings, with Mikel Merino and Riccardo Calafiori joining from Real Sociedad and Bologna respectively, alongside David Raya after his loan move was made permanent.

However, the transfer business has appeared to pay off in the opening weeks of the new season, with the Gunners currently sat in third, level on points with Manchester City and just a point off leaders Liverpool.

Arteta’s side remain unbeaten in all competitions, drawing once and winning the other in their two Champions League meetings with Atalanta and PSG so far.

The supporters will be hoping that they can continue their excellent run after the ongoing international break, aiming to close the gap to top spot but also build on their impressive European start.

Injuries are yet to massively affect the side, but the Spaniard will be hoping that midfielder Martin Odegaard will be edging closer to a return to first-team action after missing each of the last seven games in all competitions after suffering an ankle issue on international duty.

However, one midfielder has been key for the Gunners this season, looking to be worth every penny of his big-money fee that the club forked out for his signature last summer.

Declan Rice’s stats for Arsenal

Last summer, Arsenal were looking to build on their second-placed Premier League finish after eventually missing out on the title despite leading the way for the vast majority of the campaign.

They subsequently decided to dip into the transfer market to try and bolster Arteta’s side ahead of the 2023/24 season – spending some serious money in the process.

Undoubtedly, the biggest deal completed during that window was the signing of midfielder Declan Rice from West Ham United for a club-record deal and one that set the record for the highest fee paid for an English player.

The Gunners paid a fee of £105m for the 25-year-old, surpassing the £72m they paid for winger Nicolas Pepe back in 2019 – a move that was a complete failure, with the attacker departing the club on a free transfer just a couple of years later.

However, the England international has been a phenomenal addition, making 60 appearances since his move to North London – scoring eight times in the process.

He’s bagged some key goals including against rivals Manchester United in stoppage time, whilst topping off a 6-0 victory against former side West Ham United last season.

Rice has brought the added quality needed for such a long period in midfield, but also having a positive effect in attacking areas, as demonstrated by his goalscoring tally since his record transfer to the Emirates.

He’s become the perfect box-to-box option for Arteta, providing a constant figure in the heart of the side, allowing the club to be competitive in the Premier League and potentially ending their two-decade wait for a league triumph.

However, his deal could potentially be eclipsed with the club targeting a move for a player in a position that they have been desperately trying to bolster in recent months.

Arsenal eyeing move for “world-class” talent

During the summer, Arsenal were chasing a striker for long periods of the window, with various options linked with a move to the capital, but ultimately they were unable to complete any deal for a new central option.

Players such as Benjamin Sesko and Victor Osimhen were both touted with moves to join Arteta’s side, but the latter pursued a move to Saudi Arabia which failed to materialise, whilst the former decided to stay put at RB Leipzig.

However, according to talkSPORT, the Gunners have a ‘long-standing interest’ in a deal to sign striker Alexander Isak from Newcastle, and could potentially be handed a boost in their pursuit of the 25-year-old.

The “world-class” Sweden international, as dubbed by boss Eddie Howe, scored 21 league goals last season and has put multiple teams on red alert after stalling any potential new contract at St James’ Park, with no obvious sign of any progression in talks with the Magpies.

He does remain under contract until the summer of 2028, but his unwillingness to agree to a new deal could force Howe’s side into offloading their star player to avoid losing him on the cheap.

Any potential deal could eclipse the fee paid for Rice in 2023, with the talkSPORT report claiming that Arteta’s side are expected to push for a new number nine.

He could follow in the footsteps of one Arsenal legend, who captured the hearts of many during his time as a player in North London.

Transfer Focus

Mega money deals, controversial moves and big-name flops. This is the home of transfer news and opinion across Football FanCast.

Why Isak could be Arsenal’s new Henry

Thierry Henry will arguably go down as one of the best Premier League players of all time after his eight-year stint at Arsenal which saw him score 228 times for the club – the highest of any player in their history.

He caught the eye with his ability to glide past defenders before finishing effortlessly, with his all-round attacking quality often on display for the supporters.

The £11m fee former boss Arsène Wenger paid for him back in the summer of 1999 looked to be an absolute bargain given his impact at the club – cementing himself as a legend forever.

However, in 2024, Arteta has the opportunity to sign his own version of the Frenchman in Isak with the Swede possessing very similar qualities to the now 47-year-old.

His 6 foot 3 frame could be deceiving, but he’s elegant with the ball often gliding past players as Henry did, with his finishing ability in the final third up there with the very best in the world – potentially catapulting the club to the Premier League title.

Isak’s current boss Howe, has also waxed lyrical about his starman, drawing comparisons between the Newcastle number 14 and the iconic Henry, who also donned the same number during his time in North London.

Whilst the deal would undoubtedly cost the club a pretty penny, any transfer for Isak would transform Arteta’s forward line – handing him the added ammunition that he’s been craving over the last few months.

His ability in the final third is demonstrated by his goalscoring tally from last season, with the 25-year-old outscoring every current Arsenal player in the Premier League last season.

Fewer touches than Onana: 4/10 Man Utd star was even worse than Garnacho

Manchester United’s miserable run of form continued on Sunday afternoon with a controversial 2-1 defeat away to struggling West Ham United.

Erik ten Hag’s side might count themselves unlucky not to come away with a result, but they now find themselves 14th in the Premier League with just 11 points on the board.

United dominated the first 45 minutes but did not manage to find the back of the net. They came close on several occasions, with Diogo Dalot missing one of the easiest chances imaginable, firing over the bar when he had an open net to aim for.

In the second half, the momentum completely swung. After a dominant first period from the Red Devils, it was Julen Lopetegui’s Hammers who were on top.

Their pressure paid off, and Crysencio Summerville gave them the lead in the 74th minute. United fought back, and Casemiro equalised just seven minutes later.

However, with moments left on the clock, the home side were awarded a penalty after Danny Ings was deemed to be kicked over by Matthijs de Ligt. It was a controversial call, but meant West Ham got all three points after Jarrod Bowen slotted home the winner from the spot.

On a disappointing day in East London for United, there were some players who particularly struggled, including Alejandro Garnacho.

Garnacho’s stats vs. West Ham

Making his 100th senior appearance for the famous club, Garnacho had a day to forget at the London Stadium. Although he was involved in the game throughout, he missed some crucial chances and lost the ball for the Hammers’ opener.

The first of those misses came a matter of minutes into the game. Bruno Fernandes won the ball for United and squared it to his Argentine teammate in the penalty box, who proceeded to rattle the crossbar. He also fired a shot wide moments later, which he had looked to bend into the far right corner from the left-hand side of the box.

Indeed, the 20-year-old received a rating of just 5/10 for his performance at the London Stadium. Goal journalist Richard Martin described the youngster’s performance as ‘lively but really wasteful’.

His stats after the game confirmed how frustrating an afternoon it was for United’s number 17. Garnacho had 60 touches of the ball, but lost possession 16 times and missed one big chance. Off the ball, he won just one of his three attempted ground duels.

It was certainly a disappointing day for the young winger, and he was not the only one of the attackers who struggled. Rasmus Hojlund also had a tough day at the office.

Hojlund’s stats vs. West Ham

After being slowly eased back into action following injury by United boss Ten Hag, Hojlund hit the ground running with goals against Porto and Brentford. However, it was a different story at the London Stadium.

The young Danish striker barely got a kick against West Ham. Although United managed to create so many chances, his involvement was few and far between, and the one big chance he did get, which he did well to fashion out in the first place, was well saved by Lukasz Fabianski.

It was not an easy afternoon for United’s number nine, as his post-match stats suggest. Hojlund had just 26 touches, fewer than Red Devils goalkeeper Andre Onana, who had 40. Hojlund lost the ball six times and won just three of his five duels.

Following the game, the striker received a rating of just 4/10 from Martin. He explained that the youngster ‘barely got a sniff’ against a West Ham defence who have had their frailties this season, to say the least.

United will be hoping to get Hojlund more involved in his next outing, with the side in desperate need of goals and wins as they look to pick up the momentum following a poor season so far.

Ronnie Irani steps down from Essex board

Former captain’s departure may hasten new deal for Alastair Cook

ESPNcricinfo staff11-Oct-2021

A view of the County Ground, Chelmsford•Getty Images

Ronnie Irani has stepped down from his position on the board at Essex, a move that may help to convince Alastair Cook to extend his first-class career by another season.Irani, the former chairman of the club’s Cricket Committee, has been the centre of a season-long dispute at Essex, with a number of players raising objections to his interference in club matters.Irani’s recommendation of Chris Silverwood for the role of head coach in 2015 was a key factor in the club’s recent spate of trophies, including two County Championships and the Bob Willis Trophy, as well two Division Two titles and the T20 Blast in 2019.More recently, however, he attracted the ire of the players by recommending a review into an alleged drinking culture at Essex – an inquest which may have been related to the team’s celebrations after winning the Bob Willis Trophy at Lord’s last season, when photographs of beer being poured on the head of the young batter Feroze Khushi – a non-drinker for religious reasons – were circulated to widespread condemnation.Irani is understood to have suggested such behaviour was not conducive to an elite sporting environment and may be deemed exclusive to those who do not drink. However, the insinuation of a lack of professionalism was a frustration to the club’s senior core, including Cook, 36, who was their leading run-scorer in last year’s Bob Willis Trophy, and whom Essex’s new chief executive, John Stephenson, will hope can be persuaded to extend his career by another year, following a further 611 runs and two centuries this summer. While Essex did endure a below-par start to their 2021 campaign, resulting in them missing the cut for Division One when the first half of the season was concluded in July, they finished strongly to claim the Division Two title with a two-day win over Northamptonshire – a result that Dan Lawrence, their stand-in captain, claimed they would be reluctant to celebrate given their high standards in red-ball cricket.Irani is understood to have held ambitions of becoming the next chair of Essex in the new year. But his candidature was opposed by many of the club’s grandees, including Graham Gooch and David Acfield, and he was a notable omission from Ryan ten Doeschate’s vote of thanks in his farewell speech at Chelmsford, as he officially retired after 19 years of service during Essex’s final match of the season.Essex’s chairman, John Faragher, said: “I would like to thank Ronnie for his services over the last twelve years during which time the club has achieved considerable success on the field.”Ronnie’s contribution on the Essex County Cricket Club board and as chairman of the Cricket Committee has been central to this success and we wish him well in the future.”

Value soared: Leeds hit gold with "explosive" star worth more than Joseph

Leeds United head coach Daniel Farke is aiming to win promotion to the Premier League with the club at the second time of asking, since his arrival in the summer of 2023.

In his career, the German head coach has never gone two seasons in a row in the Championship without winning the title, after finishing top of the table in two of his three campaigns at that level during his time with Norwich City.

He led the Whites to the play-off final in the 2023/24 campaign, after finishing third in the regular season, but his side were beaten 1-0 by Southampton at Wembley.

Their failure to earn promotion back to the Premier League at the first time of asking had a telling effect on the squad, as a number of key players ended up moving on from Elland Road.

Crysencio Summerville, Georginio Rutter, Glen Kamara, and Archie Gray were sold to West Ham United, Brighton & Hove Albion, Rennes, and Tottenham Hotspur respectively.

Losing four key players was, of course, a blow for Farke but the head coach was able to dip into the market to secure a host of new additions, whilst academy graduate Mateo Joseph has emerged as a genuine first-team option.

Mateo Joseph's emergence

The former U21 star was on the fringes of the first-team in the 2023/24 campaign, with 20 appearances as a substitute and zero starts in the Championship.

Joseph, who scored 19 goals in 33 games for the club’s U21s, scored his first two senior goals for the West Yorkshire outfit with a brace against Chelsea at Stamford Bridge in the FA Cup, before landing his first league goal off the bench against Watford.

Rutter’s exit and Patrick Bamford falling down the pecking order opened up a spot at the top end of the pitch for the 21-year-old whiz to emerge as a starter for the Whites this term.

Joseph has started eight of his 12 appearances in the Championship so far this season and appears to be a player with plenty of potential for Farke.

As you can see in the table above, the Spain U21 international has contributed with five direct goal contributions in eight starts in the second tier.

He is yet to prove that he can find the back of the net on a regular basis, with two goals in eight games, but he still has plenty of time left ahead of him to develop and improve.

Mateo Joseph

Joseph’s value has soared as a result of his emergence this season, with FootballTransfers raising his Expected Transfer Value to €2.7m (£2.2m) in October – the highest of his career so far.

However, there is another emerging star at Elland Road who is currently worth even more than the academy graduate, and that is Largie Ramazani.

How much Largie Ramazani was worth in the summer

Leeds swooped to sign the Belgian winger from Almeria during the summer transfer window to fill a gap on the flank after they lost Summerville to West Ham.

At the time of his transfer to West Yorkshire, FootballTransfers placed his Expected Transfer Value at €4.7m (£3.9m) after his form over in Spain.

Ramazani came up through the ranks at Manchester United in England, with 15 goals and ten assists in 48 U21 and U18 appearances, before his move to Almeria in 2020.

Largie Ramazani

The forward produced 22 goals and nine assists in 128 appearances in all competitions during his four-year stint in Spain, in the second tier and the top-flight.

In the 2023/24 campaign, Ramazani competed in LaLiga with Almeria but was unable to help them to avoid relegation back to the second division.

As you can see in the table above, Ramazani did not start week-in-week-out for the Spanish side and, yet, was still able to rack up 13 goals and ‘big chances’ created combined in 13 starts.

Leeds had faith that he would be able to adapt to returning to England to play in the Championship and, on the evidence so far, they have proven to be right.

Leeds have hit gold with Largie Ramazani

The Whites have hit the jackpot with the 23-year-old forward as his value has already soared millions during his time at Elland Road, despite only joining in the summer.

Market Movers

Football FanCast's Market Movers series explores the changing landscape of the modern transfer market. How much is your club's star player or biggest flop worth today?

At the time of writing (30/10/2024), FootballTransfers has raised his Expected Transfer Value to a whopping €9.1m (£7.6m), which shows that his value has soared by almost £4m.

Leeds have, therefore, hit gold with the exciting attacker as his soaring market price suggests that they made the right decision to bring him in from Almeria.

This has been helped by his fantastic start to life in the Championship under Farke, as he has hit the ground running since his summer switch from Almeria.

The 23-year-old star is currently set to be out injured until December with an ankle injury, which has come as a blow to Leeds, and will be hoping to get back to where he left off when he returns from his absence.

As you can see in the table above, Ramazani has already contributed with four goal involvements in six starts in the second tier for the West Yorkshire outfit.

The Belgian ace, who was once described as an “explosive” winger with “electric” pace by talent scout Jacek Kulig, produced those involvements in four separate games, which shows that he has made a consistent impact – rather than them all coming in one go.

It is now down to Ramazani to bounce back from his current injury setback and to continue his fine start to life at Leeds, by helping them to secure promotion to the Premier League.
