Renshaw hammered 156 from 109 balls after Gurinder Sandhu’s hat-trick had restricted the home side

Ashes hopeful Alex Carey blasted a century for South Australia in a timely return to batting form but it wasn’t enough to prevent a six-wicket loss to Queensland in their one-day clash at Adelaide Oval.Carey top-scored for his side with 101 from 93 balls and combined with Henry Hunt (61) for a record-breaking 159-run opening stand before Gurinder Sandhu’s second career hat-trick helped Queensland bowl out the hosts for 274.Matt Renshaw, who is part of the Australia A squad, anchored the Bulls’ run chase with a career-best unbeaten 156 from 109 balls and received good support from Max Bryant (68), with the pair putting on 177 for the fourth wicket. It was Queensland’s second win from four matches in the one-day competition this season, while South Australia are struggling with a 1-3 record. In the mix to replace former captain Tim Paine as Australia’s Test gloveman at the Gabba next month, Carey had failed to reach double figures in any of his previous six innings for the Redbacks this season. He made a patient start to his innings before blasting his second 50 in just 30 balls, charging to his second one-day century of the season. He smashed a huge slog-sweep six off Marnus Labuschagne but was eventually bowled by the part-time legspinner when attempting to cut a delivery that wasn’t quite as short as he had expected.Queensland quick Sandhu finished with 4 for 44 from his nine overs, with Matt Kuhnemann also impressing as the final six South Australia wickets fell in the space of just 15 balls.Like Carey, Travis Head was hoping to impress national selectors, but he was dropped twice before his luck ran out on 29, caught by Mark Steketee off Kuhnemann.Queensland’s run chase began slowly and they were in trouble early when Test squad members Usman Khawaja and Labuschagne fell cheaply. Labuschagne departed in stunning fashion when he was run out by Hunt’s direct hit from a tough angle. But Renshaw’s composed knock steered the Bulls home. Featuring 15 fours and five sixes, his century came from 91 balls with his third fifty taking just 16 deliveries as he plundered Wes Agar.
“Mistakes will be made, but whoever can capitalise next week will come out on top”
Alan Gardner03-Dec-2021Stuart Broad has suggested England’s freshness could stand them in good stead for their attempts to regain the Ashes. The final day of their intra-squad warm-up in Brisbane became more of a practice session for the batters, but with both England and Australia experiencing disjointed preparations for next week’s first Test at the Gabba, Broad said the mental battle would carry greater significance.”Mistakes will be made by both sides but whoever can capitalise and grab the key moments next week, will come out on top,” he said.As on day three at Ian Healy Oval, Ben Stokes was in the thick of the action, making 42 before retiring not out. Rory Burns also enjoyed some time in the middle in compiling 37, but there were single-figure scores for Joe Root, Dawid Malan and Haseeb Hameed, while Jonny Bairstow batted twice for 0 and 11.Broad had sent down 11 overs on Thursday, his first gallop since suffering a calf injury in August, as England’s frontline bowlers were given a workout by the Lions. That followed four straight rained-off days of cricket – England’s first warm-up game last week saw only 29 overs bowled – with Australia also deciding to cancel a planned intra-squad game because of the weather.”I don’t think any cricketer leading into Wednesday can say they will be fully ready physically, but you can be 100% switched on mentally, and every player in that 22 is going to be finding their way into that game,” Broad told reporters in Brisbane. “And that’s where you’ve got to fall back on previous experiences that you’ve had. That’s where the mental side of the game is going to be so strong come Wednesday.Related

Labuschagne eager for Anderson duel with 'target on the back'
“We know Test cricket is a mind game, we know 80% of that’s going to be getting the brain right, making sure our competitive juices are flowing and making sure that we’re switched on to what’s coming, but we just needed that extra bit of physical work to make sure that we will be ready.”Broad will be taking part in his fourth Ashes tour, though success has been fleeting – he was involved in two Tests during the victorious 2010-11 series before being ruled out by injury, and couldn’t prevent a 5-0 whitewash in 2013-14 despite taking 21 wickets at 27.52.He was happy just to have got “some miles in the legs” ahead of the Gabba opener, with England’s analysis suggesting that Australia, where conditions are often suited for batting and the Kookaburra is less responsive, is one of the most demanding places to bowl. England’s pack of seamers includes two aged 35-plus, in Broad and James Anderson, alongside Ollie Robinson, Chris Woakes, Mark Wood and Craig Overton, as well as allrounder Stokes, meaning rotation is likely.Dawid Malan made 9 as England’s batters enjoyed mixed results•Getty Images
“It’s my first bowl in the middle since early August, which is a long time but we’ve got a recovery strategy in place that we’ve talked about in quarantine and how we’re going to approach it,” Broad said. “The backroom staff have done some great numbers on bowling in Australia, it’s quite obvious that it’s the hardest place physically to come and bowl.”Your workloads go up, the hardness of the ground puts more through your body, you need more energy levels, and you travel more distance, so I’ve got a lot of respect for what the Aussie bowlers have done here for their careers. But we know we’ve got to take our recovery very seriously because the Tests come thick and fast and we might rotate our bowlers through the series, but we need our bowlers available for selection.”England have not won a Test in Australia since sealing the series at the SCG in 2011 – losing nine out of ten in the interim – but with the home side having not played Test cricket since defeat to India in Brisbane in January, Broad said that the lack of preparation on both sides could ultimately work in the tourists’ favour.”We’ve just been scrambling around to get physical prep right,” he said. “So I think getting closer to the game is when we start focusing on where we’re going to bowl, what specific plans will be at the Australian team. Normally in an Ashes series leading in you’d probably have had those discussions earlier and build it into your practice, but half the squad in the head coach only got out of quarantine three days ago.Stuart Broad gets overs under his belt•AFP
“So it’s been a unique start, but I see that as a positive actually. I’ve been on Ashes tours where we’ve been extremely well prepped to play three or four first-class games before and we’ve come out on the losing side. Arguably, we’re going to be the freshest England team ever going into an Ashes series. We should have a lot of initial energy, we should have a lot of buzz throughout the next few months. So yeah, I’m sort of seeing that as positive.”We know that it’s the first couple of days at the Gabba that’s important and can set up our series. Australia lost their last game at the Gabba, so will that be on their minds? Probably not as it’s quite a long time ago. But I think for us it will just be not coming here with too many preconceived ideas about how the pitch will play, how the Aussies will play. It’s a bit of a lottery. I don’t think anyone knows how batters will settle, having not faced a red ball [in Tests] for 10 months. It’s going to be a mental game, and mistakes will be made by both sides, but whoever can capitalise and grab the key moments next week will come out on top.”
Leeds United bounced back from their dismal defeat in London against Millwall by securing all three points against Queens Park Rangers on Saturday.
The Whites returned to Elland Road and returned to winning ways with a 2-0 win over Marti Cifuentes’ men, thanks to goals from Jayden Bogle and Joel Piroe.
Daniel Farke’s side had lost 1-0 to Millwall in their previous match in the Championship, with a first-half goal from Japhet Tanganga sealing all three points for the hosts.
It was important for the West Yorkshire outfit to bounce back and avoid heading into the last international break of the year with back-to-back defeats, or two games without a win.
Leeds have now won each of their last five games at Elland Road, conceding one goal in that time, and will need to maintain that strong form in order to push for automatic promotion from the Championship this season.
Despite claiming all three points against QPR on Saturday, there were a few players who did not showcase the best of their abilities this weekend.
Mateo Joseph's performance against QPR
Farke handed Mateo Joseph a huge opportunity to stake a claim for his position in the team moving forward by naming him in the starting XI ahead of Piroe.
His previous start for Leeds came in the 1-1 draw at Carrow Road against Norwich City at the start of October, with six outings as a substitute between the draw with the Canaries and the win over QPR.
Piroe had enjoyed a run of starts up front and the clash with the West London side provided the Spain U21 international with the chance to show the manager that he should be playing over the Dutchman.
Unfortunately, Joseph did not do enough in his 72 minutes on the pitch against QPR to suggest that he should remain in the starting line-up on the other side of the international break.
The 21-year-old marksman struggled in and out of possession for the Whites in the clash and should now be in danger of being axed from the team, as he did not make an impact in the final third and was a liability off the ball.

As you can see in the table above, Joseph failed to score or provide an assist and gave the ball away far too often with his passes, only completing 73% of them.
His three duels won from 13 contested also show that the QPR defenders found it far too easy to get the better of the centre-forward in physical battles, which shows that the attacker struggled both in and out of possession.
Chalkboard
Football FanCast's Chalkboard series presents a tactical discussion from around the global game.
Joseph should now be in danger of being dropped, because he did not take his chance to shine, but he is now the only Leeds forward who may be in danger, as Wilfried Gnonto was far from being at his best.
Wilfried Gnonto's performance in numbers
The Italian whiz did not enjoy his best afternoon against QPR at Elland Road on Saturday, with an underwhelming performance that left plenty to be desired.
He has now gone eight games without a goal in the Championship for Leeds and has only registered one goal contribution in his last six outings, an assist against Plymouth.
Gnonto played 89 minutes on the right flank and found the target with one of his three efforts on goal, but failed to find the back of the net, whilst he also ended the game without an assist to his name.
The former Zurich star lost possession 12 times in the match without recording a goal contribution to assist his team on their way to all three points, as he was not directly involved in either the first or second goal.
He did create one ‘big chance’ but the context of that opportunity does not favour the former Inter gem. The Italian winger burst through the middle of the pitch on the counter-attack and had a relatively simple pass through to Manor Solomon to his left, but bobbled and overhit the pass.
That meant that the goalkeeper was able to come out and block the shot from a yard away by the time the Spurs loanee got to the ball, so it registered as a ‘big chance’ due to Solomon making first contact on a one-on-one, but the pass from Gnonto meant that there was little he could do but hit it straight at the body of the ‘keeper.
The 21-year-old attacker, who was described as “wasteful” by Farke because of that incident, should now be in danger of losing his position in the team.
Why Wilfried Gnonto could be dropped
Along with his poor performance against QPR, Gnonto’s recent form in the Championship has not been good enough for him to nail down his starting XI spot without question.
As aforementioned, it has now been eight matches since the winger found the back of the net, whilst his only goal contribution in the last six games was a pass to Dan James on the edge of the box, who scored from distance – hardly a contribution of high-quality.
In the 1-0 defeat to Millwall in midweek, Gnonto only won six of his 15 duels and failed to create a single ‘big chance’ for his teammates, whilst completing just 76% of his attempted passes and losing possession 18 times.
No player should be undroppable and the attacker’s recent performances have surely put him in danger of being axed from the starting XI, particularly when you consider the quality that Farke has at his disposal.

As you can see in the table above, James has been a reliable source of goals and creativity on the wing at Championship level for the Whites since the start of last season.
He was a substitute against QPR on Saturday and this means that there is a quality option for Farke to replace Gnonto with, should he decide to drop the forward.

Last week, Newcastle United reminded the Premier League of their quality, defeating Arsenal in the top flight at St. James’ Park after knocking Chelsea out of the Carabao Cup.
Newcastle are capable of achieving big things, thank you very much. Oh, sure, it hasn’t been the most fluent start to the season, but Eddie Howe’s side have had to turn themselves back to the limelight after falling by the wayside thanks to injuries last year.
Alexander Isak celebrates for Newcastle
Compounding the matter, the summer transfer window left plenty to be desired. Nonetheless, things might just be coming together, though tomorrow’s trip to Nottingham Forest in the Premier League will be quite the test.
The division’s surprise package this term, Forest are third in the table after ten matches, having lost just once and conceded only seven goals (table toppers Liverpool are the only team with a firmer defence, having shipped six).
Without question, it’s going to be a difficult one, but Newcastle have what it takes to secure victory and gain a foothold in the top half of the table.
Newcastle team news
Newcastle have actually played Forest already this season, defeating the Tricky Trees on penalties in the second round of the Carabao Cup.
This will be a different test and one that Howe will have to juggle deftly on the fitness front. Although Jacob Murphy is expected to play a part after recovering from injury, experienced duo Callum Wilson and Keiran Trippier remain sidelined and Sven Botman continues his rehabilitation from a long-term knee injury last season.
On the whole, though, Newcastle have a healthy crop right now, with no fresh concerns to report. Newcastle have hit a winning formula in recent games and must channel that toward beating Forest, and, crucially, stopping Chris Wood.
The enigma of Chris Wood
Wood flopped like a fish hauled from water in black and white, proving to be one of the worst signings of the Howe era so far. Newcastle signed Burnley’s star striker for a £25m fee in January 2022, with the New Zealand international a tried-and-tested Premier League ace.
However, his time on Tyneside was nightmarish and unsatisfactory for all parties as he scored just five times in 39 games. At least, in hindsight, Newcastle were able to recoup £15m when he moved to Nottingham Forest.
Under Nuno Espirito Santo, Wood has been an utter machine at the front of the ship, performing with unfiltered potency and proving to be one of the most clinical centre-forwards in the division.

The Magpies have felt the goalscoring prowess of their former player keenly since his departure, with Wood dispatching a hat-trick against Newcastle at St. James’ Park last season to condemn Howe’s injury-riddled outfit to a chastening league loss on Boxing Day.
Stopping him will be crucial today, stemming Forest’s attacking flow and allowing the likes of Anthony Gordon and the in-form Alexander Isak to wreak havoc and silence the City Ground.
Newcastle need to win, having stuttered through the campaign so far. Beating Arsenal last time out will have raised confidence levels, but now, away from home in a veritable lion’s den, a tweak or two might need to be made. Sandro Tonali must be unleashed.
Sandro Tonali could be crucial
Sean Longstaff’s industriousness has seen him play an important part at St. James’ Park over the past several years, serving as a counterpoint of sorts to, typically, Brazilian dynamos Bruno Guimaraes and Joelinton.
Newcastle United midfielder Sandro Tonali.
Forest will perform with a strong defensive base and will look to hurt Newcastle through fast counter-attacking football – they have recorded a 42% possession average in the Premier League this season, ranking them 18th.
Ball retention hardly represents success, something that Espirito Santo’s side are showcasing. Even so, Howe has a sharp tactical mind and he will know that correctly applied pressure and dominance on the ball could have a strong effect on the game’s narrative.
As such, Tonali should be unleashed from the outset, in place of that man Longstaff. The Italian has struggled to claim a regular starting berth since returning to action last month but would add a layer of technique and composure that might bear dividends besides Joelinton – or Joe Willock – and Guimaraes.
Hailed for his “incredibly gifted” skill set by Italian coach Roberto Mancini, Tonali’s debut season at Newcastle was cut short after a lengthy suspension was imposed on him last October for betting breaches.
Now back in action, Tonali could be crucial against Forest. Howe will be reluctant to tamper with a winning formula but one artfully-placed switch in the engine room would enhance the possession that his side will have, and, more importantly, how this is wielded.
Tonali ranked among the top 6% of Serie A midfielders with AC Milan in 2022/23 for assists and the top 18% for shot-creating actions per 90, as per FBref, which emphasises that intelligent usage of possession, elegantly directing toward the final third, where Isak and the like could feast.
The maestro has also won 56% of his ground battles in the league this term, as per Sofascore, which marks an improvement on last year’s short-lived efforts, recording a 46% success rate.
Chalkboard
Football FanCast's Chalkboard series presents a tactical discussion from around the global game.
When considering these facets, it’s clear that he might be a weapon worth wielding tomorrow, for Guimaraes’ elegant passing and Willock’s ceaseless running could work in combination with Tonali’s dynamic style, allowing for total control in the centre of the park, muffling Morgan Gibbs-White’s impact and, consequently, silencing and isolating Wood.
It’s going to be a tough test, for sure, but Newcastle have plenty of quality and have recently hit the rich vein of form that has stopped Chelsea and Arsenal. Now, Forest must be hacked and toppled.
