Ranked: The 10 best badge redesigns in football

Centre-backs at full-back, VAR lines, newly promoted teams attempting to play out from the back.

There are several modern tropes that often get the more traditional football fan brandishing their fists in pure anger, and the redesign of club badges have not been exempt from that over the years – looking at you, Leeds United. But occasionally, new designs are rightly welcomed with open arms.

With that said, we’ve taken a look at the redesigns that have gone rather well following the news that Tottenham Hotspur have undergone a change of their own by simply removing the words from underneath their badge.

10 West Ham United (2016)

Now, this one may be a controversial shout – hence its place at number 10 – but West Ham United are one of few clubs to have done simplicity well. They moved on from Upton Park and into the modern London Stadium, which receives mixed reviews in its own right – and took a new badge with them, introducing the change in 2016.

Ditching the crest’s shape and the castle, the Hammers replaced their old badge with a new shape based on the bow of HMS Warrior – the first armour-plated, iron-hulled warship built and launched at Thames Ironworks in 1860. For all the modern touches, it remains a badge decorated with history.

9 Bristol City (2019)

Replacing the heraldic crest with a simple robin in 2019, which showcases their red home shirt, Bristol City stepped into the modern world through simplicity in what was a successful badge change. The new design was chosen to reflect the club’s progressive attitude and to create an identity that the fans could be proud of.

A robin, meanwhile, was picked because of its symbol of hope and rebirth, as well as its place in the club’s history. Modern, simple and effective, City’s redesign was much-needed in 2019. However, whether the Robins are one day reborn in the Premier League remains to be seen.

8 Fiorentina (2022)

Unveiling a club manifesto alongside a new badge in 2022, Fiorentina had the task of redesigning a historic pillar of the Florence community. In the end, like many others, not much change was needed. The Italian club simply changed the size and shape of the badge whilst staying true to the violet colour and removing the gold outline.

Perhaps the gold outline will return one day if Fiorentina find themselves at the top of Italian football, but for now, their redesign remains simpler and more in line with the club’s main colours.

7 Chelsea (2005)

Chelsea’s badge from the early 2000s will be unrecognisable to some. After all, the Blues’ decision to redesign their crest was the beginning of their Premier League success, meaning that many will associate their current badge with the majority of their history, which is certainly ideal for the designers.

A new badge was the right choice, it must be said. Chelsea’s old crest was pretty dated, with a yellow and blue lion in between the CFC letters, creating a very ‘old First Division’ look rather than that of the Premier League’s prestige.

Stepping into the Premier League title race just as the cameras could take a look at their new badge, Chelsea’s crest, which is a modern take on their badge from their previous 50s heyday, is now one of the most recognisable in English football.

6 Arsenal (2002)

Before Chelsea, Arsenal paved the way for the modern badge by swapping their old design, which featured gold, red and the famous cannon that we are all familiar with these days. For over two decades, the Gunners have had the modern design, which kept the gold cannon but changed the main colours to red with a hint of blue.

In the last year, we’ve even seen the cannon alone featured on club kits in what would be the ultimate change. The former crest has plenty of history and remains a favourite, but the current logo has become iconic in its own right.

5 Inter (2021)

There would have been plenty of nerves surrounding Inter’s redesign in 2021 after Juventus had gone too far the other way towards minimalism whilst binning a historic look. But those at the San Siro did not make the same mistake. Rather than ditching the ideas in their previous crest, it seems as though Inter simply updated them into a modern look.

Where Juventus failed, Inter enjoyed success, and that change has ironically been reflected on the pitch ever since, with the former struggling to take back their Serie A crown in a frustrating few years.

4 Deportivo Alaves (2020)

Deportivo Alaves completed the task that several top clubs failed to achieve when they redesigned their badge to such success in 2020. Simplifying the appearance, the sky blue colour was ditched in favour of a blue and white design, whilst the flag now slots straight into the new crest shape.

A badge worthy of a La Liga place, Alaves will now be looking to maintain their status as a top-flight club in style for a third consecutive campaign to represent a new era.

3 Brentford (2016)

Speaking of clubs taking new badges into a new era with them, Brentford redesigned theirs for the first time in 23 years back in 2016 and have not looked back since. Swapping the rather chaotic and classic English design, Brentford decided to focus on the bee alongside the red and white colours to create a far more modern badge now well-recognised in the division.

It’s fitting that those in west London eventually took their new badge into the Premier League rather than their old design, which now represents an era outside of England’s top tier.

2 Man City (2016)

At the time, ditching the classic eagle didn’t seem like a good idea for Manchester City. Many were unsure about their new badge, but time is a great healer and their redesign now has a place among the best we’ve seen in football. A design now associated with such success, Man City took a step back in history to redesign their 1974 look to create the badge that we see today.

As far as redesigns go in the Premier League, not many have done it better than Manchester City, which is proving to be the case for many other achievements.

1 Ajax (2025)

Recency bias can be argued here, but as things stand, Ajax’s redesign is refreshingly classy. A throwback to the crest that they used between 1928 and 1990, Ajax are celebrating their 125th anniversary next year in style. Ditching the red outline, the Dutch giants are set to return to the vintage and bolder look, perhaps in an attempt to return to their best on and off the pitch.

Club CEO Menno Geelen explained the decision, telling reporters (as relayed by FourFourTwo): “Ajax will celebrate its 125th anniversary on March 18. The celebrations will include the announcement of the return of the classic logo.

“We know that the majority of our fans have cherished this wish for years, and we felt that our 125th anniversary was the perfect moment to give back the classic logo to our fans and ourselves.”

Heather Knight's innings is among 'top three' performances, says Katherine Brunt

Fast bowler praises competitive surface after picking up five-wicket haul on second day

ESPNcricinfo staff28-Jan-2022Heather Knight’s battling century in the Ashes Test in Canberra ranks among the “top three” performances in women’s cricket, according to her longest-serving team-mate Katherine Brunt, whose own five-wicket haul helped to keep England in contention after two days of a keenly fought contest.By the close of the second day, Knight’s unbeaten 127 had rescued England from the prospect of the follow-on, after they had at one stage slumped to 169 for 8 in reply to Australia’s 337 for 9 declared. But with Sophie Ecclestone providing stout support with an unbeaten 27, England reduced the arrears to 102 with the prospect of further runs when play resumes on Saturday. It was Knight’s second Test century, after a matchsaving 157, also against Australia at Wormsley in 2013, but Brunt – who has been critical of the quality of pitches used for women’s Tests – had no doubts that this was the superior knock, after withstanding a varied Australia attack on a surface offering turn for the spinners and carry for the quicks.”It was massive, beyond a shadow of a doubt,” Brunt said, of an innings that spanned 249 balls, and was 100 runs more than England’s next highest scorer. “She’s resilient as ever, showing fighting spirit, and she’s 100% a leader. You want to lead by example, and that’s how you do it. I don’t know how she does it personally, but if she could teach me how, that’d be lovely.”There was a bit more in this [pitch],” Brunt added, compared to the Wormsley match in which 23 wickets fell across the four days. “Both were equally brilliant, both really tough situations. But that’s what she’s made for. And none of us thought that she would go out there and not do it. We all believe that she can do it – she does, Australia do. She’s at that level [now], but unfortunately no-one could back her up which is the sad thing about it.Heather Knight sweeps during her century in Canberra•Getty Images

“I’ve been around a long time now, and seen some brilliant hundreds in World Cup cricket and a hundred here by Danni Wyatt in in a T20 [in the 2017-18 Ashes], but that [was in the] top three. Not one person has scored a significant score so she has taken the whole world on her shoulders and dug extremely deep to put a score on the board.”Earlier, Brunt did her utmost to keep England afloat, claiming her third Test five-for, and her first since 2009. She picked off both of the Australia wickets to fall on the second morning, prior to Meg Lanning’s declaration, including an outstanding delivery to pick off the top of Annabel Sutherland’s off stump.”It’s been a while,” Brunt said. “I think someone said maybe 16 years [sic], which is absolutely ridiculous, but we don’t often get to play on wickets that have a little bit of something in it for the bowlers. So I’m just really happy that the conditions suit.”No-one wants to play on a pitch where you don’t get a result,” Brunt added. “No-results are just sad, you always want it to go one way or the other. A result means an exciting game of Test cricket and, with it being viewed on air, we want to be able to showcase our skills bat and ball, not just the bat. It’s a breath of fresh air to have something to get excited about and be happy to run in on.”Related

England’s position could have been stronger but for a mixed display in the field. Knight dropped Lanning on 14 before lunch on the first day, while Nat Sciver reprieved Rachael Haynes off Brunt’s bowling, allowing Haynes to recover and post a key innings of 86.”I can’t scream at my fiancée, can I?” Brunt said of Sciver’s spill. “Screaming and shouting gets you nowhere, I’ve found that over the years. It only makes people feel worse, then they are stressing about the next one coming. It’s heart-wrenching, but everyone’s trying their best. I’m really fiery and passionate and want the best, but stuff like that happens, so you can’t let it destroy you.”Addressing the match situation, Brunt insisted that England “can win from anywhere” – and they need to as well, with Australia leading the series 4-2 on points after a win and two washouts in the T20Is.”Had we taken our opportunities, they might be 100 less on the board and we’d be sitting in a really good position. But we’ve been clawing that back since, and the fight that we’re showing should be an example of what it means to us, and what we’re trying to achieve in this Test.”

Venkatesh Iyer, Suryakumar Yadav star as India sweep West Indies 3-0

Pooran’s third successive half-century in vain as West Indies end tour without a single win

Suryakumar Yadav brought out his full repertoire of strokes, while Venkatesh Iyer continued to grow into the dual role of allrounder and finisher, as India surged in the second half of both innings to complete a 3-0 series sweep with a 17-run win against West Indies.Defeat in the third and final T20I meant West Indies ended their tour of India winless, having been comprehensively blanked 3-0 in the ODIs. The margin was the same in the T20Is, but West Indies were more competitive in the shortest format.Until Suryakumar and Venkatesh came together, India were 93 for 4 in 13.5 overs, the run-rate dawdling at 6.72 per over. The duo nearly doubled India’s total in the remaining 6.1 overs, with a whirlwind stand of 91. The shot-making from both was audacious, and breathtaking in its audacity too. If Suryakumar played a sweep shot with the ferocity and effect of a full-blooded pull, Venkatesh walked into his drives with elegance that wouldn’t have been out of place at a fine-dining sit-down. Then Suryakumar showed wrists of steel and hands that moved at the speed of sound in cracking sixes straight, and Venkatesh made jaws drop with a pick-up shot for six that thrilled as much for effect as execution.Suryakumar was out off the final ball of the innings trying to hit his eighth six of his innings, for 65 off 31, while Venkatesh remained unbeaten on 35 off 19. The 184 that they dragged India to seemed above par at that point. It eventually proved to be just about enough as West Indies’ own six-hitters came out swinging too.The total seemed particularly inadequate when Deepak Chahar pulled up with an injury to his right hip after having taken 2 for 15 in 11 balls, leaving India without their most experienced bowler. However, this was where India’s investing in Venkatesh’s all-round ability paid off, as he not only delivered the 13 balls required of him confidently, but also took two wickets while doing it. West Indies’ deep batting came to the fore in this game, with batters swinging and connecting, but Harshal Patel’s dipping slower balls provided the key difference, as they ultimately subsided to 167 for 9. Harshal’s 3 for 22 was the standout bowling performance of the match. An all-new opening combination for India
India brought in Avesh Khan, Shreyas Iyer, Ruturaj Gaikwad and Shardul Thakur for this game, with Virat Kohli and Rishabh Pant given a bio-bubble break and Bhuvneshwar Kumar and Yuzvendra Chahal rested. Rohit Sharma threw another curveball at the toss when he said that the openers would be Ishan Kishan with Gaikwad, and that he himself would be dropping down the order. Kishan had not had good returns in the first two T20Is, but found better timing in this game. Gaikwad fell early, but Shreyas got off the blocks quickly too.West Indies also had four changes, with Fabian Allen, Hayden Walsh Jr, Dominic Drakes and Shai Hope coming in for Brandon King, Odean Smith, Akeal Hossein and Sheldon Cottrell. Walsh Jr and Roston Chase’s spin combination reined India in after the quick start. Shreyas was out when looking to take the attack to Walsh Jr, and Rohit was in the middle in the 10th over against spin, not the best starting conditions for him.Avesh Khan poses with his maiden international cap•BCCI

Suryakumar, Venkatesh tee off
They both took an over to settle in, and then both blasted off together. The last five overs brought 86 runs, the most India have ever got in the last five of a T20I innings. The last four overs were carted for 69 runs, the second most for India in the death overs, just one run behind the 70 they got against England in the 2007 T20 World Cup, which contained Yuvraj Singh’s six sixes in one over Both batters made the most of West Indies’ bowling options being in their favour, with the spinners at the end of their spells. The pacers were carted all over, as boundaries and sixes cascaded.Chahar pulls up, Pooran’s form continues
Chahar was finding appreciable swing with the new ball, and had already nipped out both openers caught behind, when he pulled up. West Indies batted like a team who didn’t need to worry about wickets – Drakes was slotted in at No.10 – and the duo of Nicholas Pooran and Rovman Powell picked up from where they left off in the second T20I. Both men were belting the cover off the ball, and with India missing Chahar, West Indies seemed on course to finally win a game. However, Harshal’s intelligent bowling combined with Thakur’s athleticism as a fielder to see off Powell, excellently caught running back when a pull off a well-bowled short ball that he had to fetch outside off went awry. Pooran hit his third successive half-century of the series, and Romario Shepherd showed a glimpse of why his big-hitting is rated so highly with a couple of mighty blows. They threatened to mount a heist, but Harshal and Thakur combined for pin-point death bowling that scuppered West Indies. Only 19 runs came off the last three overs, and the pendulum swung decisively towards India.

Better than Hagi: Rangers star who didn’t even score was their true MOTM

Glasgow Rangers have now recorded successive wins without conceding a goal in the Scottish Premiership after a staggering 6-0 win over Kilmarnock at Ibrox on Wednesday night.

James Tavernier opened the scoring for the Light Blues, who only scored one of their six goals in the first half, before a second half hammering by the Scottish giants.

Hamza Igamane, Vaclav Cerny, and Danilo all got themselves on the scoresheet, and Cyriel Dessers came off the bench to score two goals for Philippe Clement.

One of the stars of the show for the Gers, though, was attacking midfielder Ianis Hagi, who was heavily involved in multiple goals for Rangers.

Ianis Hagi's performance against Kilmarnock

The Romania international came into the game off the back of an assist, of sorts, for the winning (own) goal against St. Johnstone at the weekend, with his cross forcing Jason Holt to convert into his own net.

Glasgow Rangers midfielder Ianis Hagi.

It was another fantastic cross that broke the deadlock against Kilmarnock, as Hagi crossed for Tavernier to fire past former teammate Robby McCrorie to make it 1-0.

The mercurial magician’s crossing ability was on display again for the second goal for the Light Blues. He fired a ball to the back post for Danilo to find the back of the net.

They were the only two chances he created in the match, though, and Hagi also lost 100% (1/1) of his duels in his 90 minutes on the pitch, which shows that he struggled to compete out of possession.

There was a Rangers star who was even better than the Romanian wizard, though, and that was central midfielder Nicolas Raskin, who was man of the match, despite not even scoring any of the six goals.

Nicolas Raskin's performance against Kilmarnock

The Belgian maestro was the true man of the match for the Light Blues with his terrific performance in the middle of the park for the Scottish giants.

Whilst the best of his work came in midfield, Raskin also popped up in the box with some terrific footwork to evade challenges and tee up Cerny for the fourth Rangers goal.

The 23-year-old whiz ended the match with as many chances created (two) as Hagi, despite only playing 74 minutes, but assisted one, rather than two.

As you can see in the table above, Raskin was incredibly dominant out of possession for the Gers to help them to maintain their dominance of the match, cutting out Kilmarnock attacks on a regular basis.

The former Standard Liege star coupled quality in possession, and in the final third, with defensive strength and reliability, which made him the heart of the team for Clement.

He was, arguably, the most important player in the game by being the glue to ensure that the Gers kept a clean sheet and constantly created chances to find the back of the net at the other end, whereas Hagi provided quality on the ball but struggled off it.

Chelsea working on deal for £21m La Liga attacker with board very impressed

Chelsea are now believed to be “working” on the potential signing of a La Liga star behind-the-scenes, with Stamford Bridge officials apparently very impressed by him.

However, despite their excellent form, those within Chelsea are still looking to bolster some key areas of the squad – whether that be in the looming January transfer window or next summer.

BlueCo are said to be prioritising the addition of a new centre-back at Chelsea, potentially meaning one of Axel Disasi or Benoit Badiashile could depart (Simon Phillips), with Everton’s Jarrad Branthwaite, Crystal Palace’s Marc Guehi, Benfica’s Tomas Araujo and Antonio Silva all being looked at.

Meanwhile, there is also the very real possibility that Chelsea could bring in a prolific new number nine, despite Nicolas Jackson’s excellent performances leading the line this season and Christopher Nkunku being just as prolific off the bench.

According to some reports, Chelsea have made contact with Ipswich Town over Liam Delap, and talks over a potential deal have already been held.

The Englishman has impressed under Kieran McKenna, but Delap is by no means there only striker target, with Viktor Gyokeres, Victor Osimhen, Benjamin Sesko, Victor Boniface and Dušan Vlahović sporadically linked in the past few months as well.

Chelsea "working" on deal for Getafe sensation Christantus Uche

Another player who can feature as a centre-forward, but is more traditionally an attacking midfielder, is Getafe starlet Christantus Uche.

The breakout Nigerian played amateur football in his home country just two years ago, but since then, Uche has risen to the top of European football and is now plying his trade in Spain’s top flight.

The 21-year-old is a mainstay for Getafe after signing for just €500,000 in the summer, and his performances have attracted attention from west London.

According to reports out of Spain, Chelsea are “working” on a deal for Uche, and the club’s board are particularly impressed by his versatility. They’re apparently the “most determined” club to secure his services, but Getafe won’t be letting him go for a penny less than his £21 million release clause.

Dhoni's fireworks not enough for Chennai Super Kings in opener

KKR’s mystery spinners Narine and Chakravarthy prove unhittable; Rahane shines with the bat

MS Dhoni made up for a slow start•BCCI

MS Dhoni, 40 and no longer captain, turned the clock back with a vintage display of death-overs hitting, but Chennai Super Kings struggled either side of that as a canny bowling effort on a two-paced Wankhede Stadium pitch set up a comfortable opening-day win for Kolkata Knight Riders. All the Knight Riders bowlers contributed to restricting Super Kings to 131. Umesh Yadav was quick and incisive with the new ball, dismissing both openers, and mystery spinners Varun Chakravarthy and Sunil Narine were close to unhittable, finishing with combined figures of 1 for 38 from their eight overs.Andre Russell and Shivam Mavi bore the brunt of Dhoni’s punishment as Super Kings took 47 off the last three overs of their innings, but they had made an impact before that, teaming up with Umesh in hitting hard lengths and starving the batters of opportunities to access the short straight boundaries. The chase was straightforward, even if Knight Riders endured a spell of 29 boundary-less balls. The target was never going to challenge them as long as they didn’t lose a heap of wickets, and Ajinkya Rahane scored 44 while three others made twenties as Knight Riders got home with nine balls to spare.Umesh bosses the powerplay
Umesh has failed to attract bids higher than his base price for two auctions running, and the reason could be that he can leak runs outside the phase he excels in. But he has a terrific record in that phase, the powerplay – a better record since 2018 than even Deepak Chahar, whom Super Kings spent serious money to retain for this very skill. The ball swung early for Umesh, and a bit of dampness in the pitch also made his scrambled-seam ball nip around. Outswing got the better of Ruturaj Gaikwad, IPL 2021’s highest run-getter, in Umesh’s first over, and in his third straight over within the powerplay he dismissed Devon Conway, who, making his IPL debut, miscued a flick to mid-on while trying to break the early shackles.Super Kings ended the powerplay at 35 for 2, and the bulk of their runs came from their No. 3 Robin Uthappa, who troubled the new-ball bowlers with his big shuffle across his stumps. It allowed him to access the leg side against balls that were marginally too straight, and he hit two fours and two sixes in this manner in rushing to 23 off 16 at the six-over mark.Umesh Yadav accounted for both Chennai Super Kings’ openers•BCCI

Super Kings freeze in the middle overs
Varun Chakravarthy came close to taking a wicket in his first over when a bottom-edged sweep from Ambati Rayudu shaved the leg stump without disturbing a bail. He struck in his second over, however, a sharp leg-side stumping from Sheldon Jackson after a dipping wrong’un left Uthappa stranded outside his crease.Super Kings were 49 for 3 at that stage, inside the eighth over, not a terrible position, but a moment of indecision from Ravindra Jadeja on his captaincy debut led to Rayudu being run out in the next over. Then Shivam Dube – who had narrowly avoided suffering the same fate as Rayudu after another mix-up with Jadeja – lobbed a catch to midwicket after a well-directed short ball from Russell cramped him on the pull in the 11th over. The runs, meanwhile, were drying up. Super Kings got through 48 balls without a boundary before a misfield from Chakravarthy at mid-off allowed one in the 16th over. By the end of the 17th, Super Kings were 84 for 5 – it was their third-worst first-innings score at that stage of an IPL innings.Dhoni blasts off
In the first 16 overs, the Knight Riders fast bowlers had made a clear effort to bowl a good length or just short of it. According to ESPNcricinfo’s data, 48 of the 54 balls they bowled were in those areas, and only three on a full length. The slog overs, however, put bowlers under pressure to not be predictable, and to slip in the yorker every now and then. With dew setting in, controlling the yorker became difficult: Mavi and Russell bowled four full-tosses in overs 18-20, and three of them flew to or over the boundary. That apart, the late avalanche of runs was also down to Dhoni’s still flickering late-overs genius. He used the depth of the crease to manufacture boundaries square of the wicket off Russell, and in the final over executed a bottom-handed whip of fierce power, off a near-yorker, to give long-on no chance.Jadeja, boundary-less for the first 27 balls of his innings, ended it with a sliced six over the covers, and Super Kings had a total they could conceivably try and defend.Ajinkya Rahane was solid for Kolkata Knight Riders at the top•BCCI

Rahane does the Rahane thing
This was the sort of chase Rahane is designed for: coast at close to a run a ball, ensure one end is locked up, and half the job is done. Rahane, making his Knight Riders debut, gave them just the start they desired. Perhaps in an effort to search for swing, Tushar Deshpande and Adam Milne erred on the full side in the early overs, and Rahane and Venkatesh Iyer hit five fours in the first five overs, four of them with front-foot drives. In between, Rahane also pulled Milne for a six that showed how quickly he was seeing the ball and getting into position.By the end of the powerplay, Knight Riders were 43 for no loss.Bravo muddies the waters, but Knight Riders cruise home
Introduced in the seventh over, Dwayne Bravo made an immediate impact by angling the ball away from Venkatesh’s hitting arc and getting him to edge behind. This brought another left-hander to the crease, Nitish Rana, and Super Kings began to miss Moeen Ali – who is serving his quarantine after visa issues delayed his arrival in India – for the second time on the night. They had missed his hitting ability against Knight Riders’ spinners, and they were now missing his offspin. After an expensive eighth over from the dibbly-dobbly Dube, Super Kings were forced to turn to one of their two left-arm spinners, and Rana immediately hit Mitchell Santner for six. But with two more Santner overs to go and with Jadeja yet to bowl, Rana fell off the last ball of the 10th over, taking on a slower bouncer from Bravo and failing to clear short fine leg. With two right-handers at the crease, Santner and Jadeja combined to peg back the scoring rate, in the process also picking up the wicket of Rahane. He had done his job, though, and also shown clear intent to keep playing his shots in the middle overs, even nailing a reverse-sweep off Jadeja. After that shot, Knight Riders went 29 balls without a boundary, before Sam Billings stretched out and swept Bravo from outside off stump to the square leg boundary in the 16th over. That shot eased the pressure that had built up; Knight Riders had needed 25 off 27 before Billings played it.Billings made the task more straightforward for Knight Riders with a skip down the track in the 17th over to deposit Jadeja over wide long-on. He was caught on the boundary attempting another sweep off Bravo soon after, but he had shut the door on Super Kings by then.
