Fitness doubts swirl as Ollie Robinson misses chance to feast on callow Leicestershire

England quick limited to solitary over as Sussex take charge even without him

Sussex 39 for 1 trail Leicestershire 210 (Crocombe 3-37, Beard 3-58) by 171 runsOllie Robinson’s prospects of bowling himself into contention for the opening Test against New Zealand took another backward step when what was officially described as a stomach upset restricted him to only one over against Leicestershire. What he consumed ahead of the game has not been divulged, but it is a fair bet that it was not an ECB-approved mix of piri-piri breaded tofu and cruciferous vegetables.Fast food led to slow Robinson as he summoned up a single desultory over before leaving the field. He made a couple more shortlived fielding appearances later in the day, but none were long enough to bowl again. Fortunately for Sussex, Leicestershire’s innings developed a similarly pallid complexion as they subsided to 210 all out in 83.4 overs.”What are we going to do about Ollie?” will be a question in the In Tray of Brendon McCullum as he takes up his role as England’s new Test coach. Sussex loyally claim that his fitness in county cricket has been exemplary, but the extra intensity of international cricket has caught him all too frequently short.Since his fitness was openly brought into question at the end of England’s Ashes series, he has missed all three Tests in the West Indies because of a back spasm in the warm-up match in Antigua, and been refused permission to play in Sussex’s Championship match against Worcestershire because his fitness levels were unsatisfactory – something he blamed on a tooth infection. Nobody said what tooth it was, but as he appears to be undermining his own career it was unlikely to be a wisdom tooth. In his solitary Championship match, against Middlesex at Hove last week, Robinson took seven wickets. He appears to be a bowler who gets fit by bowling, an old-fashioned concept, but in many ways he is an old-fashioned cricketer. A casual look suggested he did look in need of an over or two. To deny him cricket at Worcester because he was not fit enough might well be viewed as a hard lesson, but the approach could prove to be largely counterproductive. Where should dictates begin and end? McCullum may have a view.Leicestershire have reached 300 only once all season, and their only hundred in a season in which the other 17 counties have racked up 94 between them was a match-saving affair by Hassan Azad against Worcestershire. This offered an opportunity to Robinson for something eye-catching, even allowing for the fact that this is a match between the Second Division’s bottom two, and so even if he had taken a 10-for, the clips would have brought paroxysms of rage from Kevin Pietersen on social media with cries of: “Look at the batting!””Look at the batting!” would have been an appropriate response, come to think of it, for several of the dismissals as Leicestershire, 69 for 1 with lunch approaching, contrived to lose seven wickets for 75 in 26 overs. In Robinson’s absence, Aaron Beard, an Essex loanee, and Henry Crocombe bowled with commendable energy to take three wickets each.Robinson’s talent is abundant – a Test and first-class average of 21 testifies to that – but he must be fit enough as a third seamer to bowl more than 20 overs a day, especially as England have no recourse to a reliable holding spinner. With James Anderson and Stuart Broad approaching an age when some people are already considering a re-run of an old Midsomer Murders, they cannot be expected to pick up any slack. With George Garton absent again because of the effects of long Covid, Mohammad Rizwan withdrawing due to a family bereavement and Mason Crane recalled by Hampshire, Sussex were up against it. The captain, Tom Haines, was forced to employ his own medium pace, with the keeper standing up, within the first hour.Crocombe had Sam Evans caught at second slip, but Leicestershire were within an over of lunch, with Azad and Rishi Patel looking untroubled, when they contrived one of the slackest run-outs of the season. The cover region was entirely unmanned as Azad pushed the ball firmly enough to point, but Patel half-heartedly opted for a single, Azad, whose running between the wickets can be a bit of a liability, wasn’t sure at all, and Tom Alsop dashed from first slip to pick up and throw down the stumps at the bowler’s end with Azad well short.Considering that Leicestershire had suffered three first-innings run-outs against Glamorgan last week, Azad among them, the waste was criminal. Patel followed soon after lunch to a good, back-of-a-length ball from Beard, and another catch at second slip for Tom Clark.Henry Crocombe led the line in Robinson’s absence with three wickets•Getty Images

Leicestershire have given away 4,000 free tickets for this match, many of them to schools, and judging by the squeals of delight that had met the team announcement at 10.40am, Patel was something of a favourite so his departure was a disappointment. In The Meet, the favoured haunt of more sedentary observers, team announcements have occasionally brought a momentary pause in the chewing of a sausage sandwich, but squeals have not been logged, and it was good to see the outfield swarming with children playing Kwik Cricket at the lunch interval.Leicestershire’s shot-making afterwards did not go so well. Colin Ackermann chopped a little inducker from Haines into his stumps and Lewis Hill’s run-a-ball 35 ended with an uncontrolled leaping cut at Crocombe and a decent, leaping catch by Archie Lenham at square third man.Harry Swindells was lbw on the back leg to Delray Rawlins, who also had the South African Wiaan Mulder caught down the leg-side. Ben Mike fell for nought, trying to force a Crocombe delivery off the back foot and edging to first slip. Callum Parkinson’s unbeaten 32 served as a suitable comment on the inadequacies of what had gone before and he reinforced that after the close.”A frustrating day because we’re repeating errors – we had the game by the scruff of the neck at 69-1, but then we have a soft run-out and a couple of soft dismissals and we’re on the back foot,” he said.”We’ve got to give ourselves a chance to get into games and you don’t often do that when you don’t score big first innings runs. It felt like a decent pitch to bat on. We just have to do the basics better.”Neither side will want to end the first phase of the Championship – this is the penultimate round of seven – without a win to their name. It was Sussex who closed the first day the more confident of achieving breaking their duck. And, in the second innings, who knows, a revitalised Robinson to come.

Wrexham want to sign 22 y/o forward who Carragher has called "brilliant"

Wrexham are eyeing the January signing of a player who Jamie Carragher has described as “brilliant”, according to journalist Graeme Bailey.

Wrexham looking strong in promotion push

Phil Parkinson’s side continue to impress back in League One, with some wondering if they would find it hard being in the third tier of English football back in August.

Instead, Wrexham have taken to the league like a duck to water, sitting third in the table behind Birmingham City and Wycombe Wanderers, with the trio looking like front-runners to seal promotion to the Championship.

The Welsh outfit could be looking to conduct some important business during the January transfer window, in order to give Parkinson’s men an even better chance of sealing promotion once again.

Ethan Wheatley has emerged as a rumoured target for Wrexham, even being seen as a player who could bring similar qualities to Sporting CP sensation Viktor Gyokeres. The 18-year-old Manchester United ace has been touted as a loan option, providing extra firepower in the final third.

Wrexham keen on signing "brilliant" ace in January

Speaking to The Wrexham Insider, Bailey talked up the idea of Wrexham signing Leeds United striker Joe Gelhardt in January, possibly instead of Patrick Bamford:

“Patrick Bamford is an interesting name, but from what I am told Leeds are not in a huge hurry to lose anyone this January, it is all about promotion for them. And whilst Wrexham have a big budget, I don’t see how they could afford Bamford who is still on a Premier League contract.

“I do expect Wrexham to do something and I am actually told they could raid Leeds for another player, as they like Joe Gelhardt, although they are not alone and it would not easy to land him either. But I understand Wrexham have been offered a host of names and are confident of getting the right man.”

Leeds forward Joe Gelhardt.

Gelhardt could be such an exciting addition for Wrexham midway through the season, with Carragher calling him “brilliant” in the past, seeing him as a gifted young player.

Meanwhile, Jamie Redknapp has also spoken of his admiration for the Englishman in the past, saying: “You see him on the pitch, he made a real difference. I like him, he’s really exciting. He’s fast, he’s aggressive, he gets on the ball, takes people on. Once he gets into the box he loves it and where he can cause most of his damage.”

Admittedly, Gelhardt’s time at Leeds has petered out a little, with Daniel Farke struggling to make him a key man and only nine minutes of Championship action coming his way this season.

He is still only 22 years of age, however, and could simply be desperate for a fresh challenge to prove himself. He would, therefore, be an eye-catching addition for Wrexham, who could even eye a permanent move at the end of the season if he impresses.

£52m star "ready to leave" Chelsea in January as agents look for new club

Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca is braced for potential outgoings at Stamford Bridge next month, and it is believed that another member of his squad is now looking to depart in the winter window.

Enzo Maresca refuses to rule out Chelsea exits in January

Speaking in a recent press conference, when asked about summer signing Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall’s immediate future, Chelsea’s manager refused to rule out exits for any of his players – insisting that anything could happen in January.

Dewsbury-Hall is one of many fringe Chelsea players who’ve been repeatedly linked with the exit door, alongside the likes of Ben Chilwell, Cesare Casadei and Carney Chukwuemeka, and Maresca cannot deny that any of his squad could choose to quit the club.

“Unfortunately I cannot say that, not about Kiernan, about all the squad, because when the transfer window is open, unfortunately anything can happen,” said Maresca on possible Chelsea departures in January.

“So I’m not focused on January, the only thing I can say about Kiernan is that we are very happy in the way he’s working, we are very happy about his performance, and this is my thought about Kiernan.

“We don’t want one of our players to leave, the problem is that sometimes the question is more for them, that if they say, ‘OK, you don’t want me to leave, but I’m not happy, I want to play more’. So in that case, we are not going to say, ‘No, you have to stay, yes or yes’. It’s a matter of agreement between the club and the player, the only thing I can say is that we are happy with Kiernan, then we’ll see.”

Defender Axel Disasi is also attracting interest from Juventus, with reports in France claiming the 26-year-old could elect to pack his bags and leave as he struggles to become a certainty in Maresca’s Premier League elevens.

Maresca previously ruled out an exit for Christopher Nkunku, but going by the Chelsea boss’ latest comments, it appears the £52 million signing from RB Leipzig isn’t entirely out of the equation when it comes to outgoings.

Nkunku is currently Chelsea’s top scorer in all competitions with 12 goals in 24 appearances, but the Frenchman remains behind Nicolas Jackson in Maresca’s pecking order when it comes to his top flight team selections.

Christopher Nkunku "ready to leave" Chelsea in January

According to journalist Graeme Bailey and The Boot Room, Nkunku is “ready to leave” Chelsea in January, and his agents are actively searching for options in the form of a new club for ex-Bundesliga sensation.

The 27-year-old has started just two Premier League games all season, once on the opening weekend against Man City, and then against Southampton in their 5-1 win at St. Mary’s Stadium.

Ligue 1 champions PSG are believed to be monitoring the situation closely, and may well offer Nkunku a route out of Stamford Bridge in a possible switch across the channel.

Their interest in Nkunku may well cause a transfer domino as well, with both Arsenal and Man United eyeing Randal Kolo Muani. Luis Enrique’s side need to shift the France international to make room for Nkunku, so this could be one to watch as fast approach the transfer window’s reopening.

A missão não será fácil. Logo no primeiro jogo, o time do Parque São Jorge vai enfrentar o Always Ready, da Bolívia.

Shimron Hetmyer leaves IPL 2022 for the birth of his child

Shimron Hetmyer has left the Rajasthan Royals to return home to Guyana for the birth of his first child. “My stuff is still left in the room,” the 25-year old said, indicating that he will be returning to India to see out the rest of the IPL. Royals are in third place and are looking like one of the better placed teams to make the playoffs which are set to begin on May 24.Hetmyer has been a huge contributor to the Royals’ surge up the points table. As the team’s finisher, he has scored 291 runs at an average of 72 (he has remained unbeaten in seven out of 11 innings). A more telling statistic of his influence is his death-overs (17-20) strike rate. At 214.28, he is among the top-five most destructive finishers this season (min 30 balls).

Hetmyer left Mumbai on Sunday morning on the back of another high-impact cameo – 31 not out off 16 balls against Punjab Kings that helped seal a chase of 190. James Neesham, Daryl Mitchell, Karun Nair, Rassie van der Dussen and Nathan Coulter-Nile are all likely to be in the mix to take his spot in the batting order.Royals have three games left in the league stage – Delhi Capitals on May 11, Lucknow Super Giants on May 15 and Chennai Super Kings on May 20.

Their next Gordon: Newcastle chasing "special" gem from big PL club

Eddie Howe’s Newcastle United have now won their last five clashes in the Premier League, with their last victory coming away at an injury-depleted Tottenham Hotspur side.

Only Nottingham Forest can boast a similarly impressive winning streak when taking a closer inspection at the division, with Arne Slot’s Liverpool drawing two games on the trot before a recent trio of wins, as the Magpies now sit pretty in fifth spot above the likes of Manchester City and Aston Villa.

Howe will know for his team to keep up this sterling patch of form, he will need the likes of Alexander Isak and Anthony Gordon to continue firing on all cylinders, with the ex-Everton attacker bagging his team’s opener in North London to keep his own excellent season chugging along.

Antony Gordon's form this season

Once costing the Toon an excessive £45m to pick up in January 2023 from Everton, Gordon is now more than justifying that wild price-tag, after initial eyebrows were surely raised.

Indeed, the Liverpool-born winger is now up to five goals and five assists in all competitions for the campaign after he confidently placed a shot past Brandon Austin to deal a big blow to Spurs.

In total now for Newcastle – since his big-money move from Goodison Park – the exciting 23-year-old has tallied up 18 goals and 16 assists from 87 contests, with Howe getting far more out of his number ten than previous managers at Everton could inspire out of Gordon.

Only registering an inferior seven goals and eight assists from 78 senior appearances in Merseyside, it seems as if St James’ Park is a far happier home for Gordon now, helped no doubt by the likes of Bruno Guimaraes and the aforementioned Isak being his talented teammates.

He could soon be welcomed by another bright face this January, who will want to breathe life back into his stuttering playing days much like Gordon has managed.

Newcastle could sign their next Gordon

As per a report by the Daily Mail Online earlier this week, Newcastle are interested in adding Manchester City outcast James McAtee to their ranks this month.

Although it is further stated that major incomings are unlikely, snapping up the midfielder on a loan deal could prove too tempting to refuse, with McAtee once even being labelled as “special” by Pep Guardiola despite his lack of minutes at the Etihad as of late.

Sheffield United'sJamesMcAteecelebrates scoring their first goal

After all, the 22-year-old has shown off his class in the Premier League before when previously on the books of Sheffield United, meaning Howe could be just the right man to get more out of McAtee, much like he did with a reinvigorated Gordon.

Last season – even as the Blades sunk to a sorry relegation – the Salford-born ace was a bright spark with three goals and three assists picked up in top-flight action which included a stunning strike looping in at Bramall Lane against Brentford.

Capable of playing centrally, as a number ten or even down the right wing if needs be, McAtee could well prove to be a smart pick-up – away from purely showing his class in South Yorkshire – by giving Howe more options away from his preferred starters.

This would also be handy when you consider Newcastle’s bumper January fixture list, which sees them tackle five more clashes before the busy month is out.
