England batter Joe Root has replaced Australia’s Marnus Labuschagne at the top of the ICC men’s Test rankings, following his recent run of form.Root, who recently became only the second England batter to score more than 10,000 Test runs, has been in fine touch during the ongoing home series against New Zealand, producing knocks of 115* at Lord’s and 176 in Nottingham. As a result, Root earned 897 rating points, enough to take him above Labuschagne, who had held on to the No.1 spot since December 2021.Full rankings tables

Australia’s Steven Smith remains in third place, with Pakistan captain Babar Azam and New Zealand captain Kane Williamson rounding off the top five.Labuschagne, however, will have a chance to regain top spot when Australia take on Sri Lanka in a two-match series later this month. Root’s immediate assignments following the New Zealand series include a one-off Test against India, as well as a three-match series against South Africa at home.New Zealand’s Daryl Mitchell also made big progress in the rankings, jumping 33 places to move to 17th in the batting list, following scores of 190 and 69 in the Trent Bridge Test.Babar Azam occupies top spot in both the men’s ODI and T20I rankings•AFP/Getty Images

Among the bowlers, Trent Boult, who took a five-wicket haul during the first innings at Trent Bridge, vaulted four places up to ninth in the rankings, while his compatriots Kyle Jamieson and Tim Southee dropped to sixth and 13th on the list, respectively. That allowed India’s Jasprit Bumrah (third), Pakistan’s Shaheen Shah Afridi (fourth) and South Africa’s Kagiso Rabada (fifth) to all rise a spot.In the ODI table, Pakistan opener Imam-ul-Haq moved past India’s Virat Kohli to occupy the No. 2 position in the batting rankings, achieving a career-best 815 points. Imam scored three half-centuries during Pakistan’s ODI series at home against West Indies and was named Player of the Series. His captain Babar, meanwhile, occupies top spot in both the men’s ODI and T20I rankings, having made 50-plus scores in six of his last seven international matches.Boult remains on top of the ODI bowler rankings, but Australia seamer Josh Hazlewood and New Zealand pacer Matt Henry are closing in after they jumped one spot to second and third, respectively. In the allrounder rankings, Oman’s Zeeshan Maqsood was the biggest mover, jumping 13 places to 10th following a string of impressive performances in the World Cup League 2. Maqsood scored an unbeaten century against Nepal earlier this month and then backed that up with a four-wicket haul with the ball in Oman’s following match against USA.

Graham Potter wants West Ham to explore January loan deal for £40m player

West Ham United manager Graham Potter is personally eager for the east Londoners to consider signing a Premier League player on loan, with the Englishman reportedly giving his thoughts on incomings after guiding them to their first win under his tutelage earlier this week.

West Ham seal first win under Potter 3-2 victory against Fulham

It hasn’t taken long for Potter to secure three points in the Hammers hot seat, with West Ham beating Fulham 3-2 at a loud and atmospheric London Stadium earlier this week.

Club will drop £81k-per-week striker because he's close to joining West Ham

A very bold claim has emerged from Europe.

ByEmilio Galantini Jan 15, 2025

The thrilling five-goal encounter saw summer signing Carlos Soler score his first goal for West Ham with a stunning side-footed finish past the wrong-footed Bernd Leno in Fulham’s net, with Tomas Soucek doubling their lead just two minutes later.

Their goals came against the run of play, but Potter would’ve been pleased by West Ham’s ruthlessness in front of goal. Alexi Iwobi did grab one back for the away side with the first of his brace to make it 2-1, though Lucas Paqueta was soon on hand to restore the Irons’ two-goal advantage after taking advantage of a serious Fulham blunder.

Iwobi’s second wasn’t enough to nick any kind of result for Fulham, as West Ham ran out eventual 3-2 winners, and after the game Potter revealed his plans to build a foundation of “togetherness” at the club.

“The start point is the foundation of togetherness and the foundation of a team,” Potter told BBC Sport.

“We were far from perfect. But in terms of application of the players and how they fought and suffered, they were really, really, good.

“We have to look at the context of what happened and it’s been a tough week for the players and we have players missing, especially in the forward areas. But nevertheless, the team spirit, the team effort and willingness to try were fantastic.”

Another order of business for Potter is assisting the West Ham recruitment team as we approach the busy end of January. West Ham are in talks to sign a striker this month, with Nottingham Forest’s Taiwo Awoniyi among their targets (Florian Plettenberg). German media are also reporting that West Ham are closing in on a deal for RB Leipzig’s Andre Silva, but this is yet to gain traction closer to home.

Potter wants West Ham to consider January deal for Chukwuemeka

According to very reliable club insider ExWHUemployee, they also have their eyes on bolstering the midfield before deadline day on February 3.

This has resulted in their interest in Chelsea’s Carney Chukwuemeka. The 21-year-old’s contract includes a £40 million release clause, but Potter apparently wants West Ham to consider a loan deal for Chukwuemeka.

“We have listed the names before but the two Chelsea lads Chukwuemeka and Dewsbury-Hall are loans that Potter is said to be very keen to explore,” said Ex. “We are also still very much interested in Dutch midfielder Banzuzi who we hope will join us over other clubs.”

While the former Aston Villa gem is out of favour under Enzo Maresca, footballing legend Marcel Desailly has praised Chukwuemeka in the past, calling him “clinical” and an “artist” on the ball.

Mitchell Starc has become the first Australian star to confirm he won’t play in this summer’s Big Bash League as negotiations loom on future player availability. This summer shapes as crucial for the competition out of the Covid-19 pandemic, with Cricket Australia desperate to have as much top-line talent playing as often as possible.Australia’s multi-format stars are expected to be available for a sizeable part of it, with January’s one-day series against South Africa set to be cancelled. But that won’t alter Starc’s position, who does not see himself featuring any time soon. The 32-year-old quick last played for the Sydney Sixers in 2014-15, while also forgoing close to $10 million in possible salaries since then.Related

“I have always enjoyed the BBL when I have played it … but my approach with all franchise cricket hasn’t changed over the last seven years,” Starc told AAP in Galle.”My approach to the IPL, BBL, I have looked at the Australian schedule and wanting to be as fit and well-performed for that as I can. And franchise cricket has taken a back seat.”Starc’s position comes in the midst of a cluttered international schedule.Following the current tour in Sri Lanka, Australia have white-ball series against Zimbabwe, New Zealand, India, England and West Indies as well as a home T20 World Cup.Tests follow against West Indies and South Africa before the BBL window, with a tour of India, an away Ashes and a 50-over World Cup all highlighting next year’s calendar.”The schedule in the next 18 months is ridiculous,” Starc said. “I will always keep Australian cricket front of mind, and then franchise cricket [second].”I also like spending time at home and seeing my wife [Alyssa Healy, who is also often away].”Mitchell Starc hasn’t played in the BBL since 2014•Getty Images

The reluctance of Starc and others could however be challenged in coming years. There will be a push in the next pay negotiations for players to be contracted to a club and participating when not injured or on Australia duties. The current Memoriam of Understanding expires midway through 2023, meaning such a mechanism could be in place for the following summer if agreed upon.It comes amid criticism of the competition’s quality, with CA preparing to defend the league in the Federal Court as the Seven Network try to break from their broadcast deal.As things stand, Usman Khawaja (Brisbane Heat), Mitchell Swepson (Brisbane Heat), Nathan Lyon (Sixers) and Alex Carey (Adelaide Strikers) all have contracts for this summer.Marnus Labuschagne will likely re-sign with Heat and Travis Head has long played for Strikers. Steven Smith will also likely play, happy there is a push for clubs to be able to welcome Australian players into squads after being locked out last summer.Josh Hazlewood played for the Sixers as recent as 2019-20, while Cameron Green skipped last year and Pat Cummins and David Warner have long sat out.CA are confident the overseas player draft will bring pulling power to the competition, luring their first big fish with Faf du Plessis last week.

West Ham have been in talks over signing Taiwo Awoniyi from Nottingham Forest, as reliably reported by Sky Germany’s Florian Plettenberg, while it is believed that Brighton starlet Evan Ferguson could be signed Hammers technical director Tim Steidten on loan.

Awoniyi is no longer Forest’s first-choice striker, despite flashes of brilliance in 2023/2024, with the Premier League’s fifth-top scorer Chris Wood currently far ahead of the Nigerian in Nuno Espirito Santo’s pecking order and loving life right now.

This could potentially free up the possibility of a move for Awoniyi, but at the same time, Nuno most likely won’t be keen on losing a capable back-up striker mid-season. Ferguson, meanwhile, is facing an uncertain future at Brighton and Fabian Hurzeler has admitted that he could depart on a temporary deal.

Brighton & Hove Albion'sEvanFergusoncelebrates

“We will negotiate what is important for him, what is important for his development, where he can improve the best, and then we will make the decision together,” said Hurzeler on Ferguson’s future.

“This decision should be what is best for the player and for the club. We sent (Facundo) Buonanotte, for example, to Leicester.

“We know that the Premier League is a very good league to improve, because it’s tough, it’s intense, especially for young players. It’s the perfect environment to adapt.”

RB Leipzig hitman Andre Silva is attracting serious interest from West Ham as well, according to reports in Germany, so there are plenty of targets who the east Londoners are considering right now, as Steidten and co-chair David Sullivan seek to provide Potter with a goalscorer.

Graham Potter "clear" he wants Jonathan David at West Ham

According to a new report by The Boot Room and journalist Graeme Bailey, Lille star Jonathan David is firmly on the West Ham boss’ personal radar.

David, who’s scored a brilliant 17 goals and registered six assists so far this campaign, has bagged a career total of 169 for club and country combined at just 25-years-old.

LOSC Lille striker Jonathan David

To make matters even more attractive for the Irons, he’s also out of contract at the end of this season – meaning he could leave for a cut-price January fee, agree a pre-contract overseas or decide on his next club at zero cost in the summer.

The Canada international’s pending availability makes him a very attractive option, and potentially one of the bargains of 2025. Arsenal, Tottenham, Chelsea, Newcastle, Aston Villa and Man United are all considering an approach to David, as are West Ham.

As per TBR’s information, West Ham are ready to make an offer to David, and Potter has made it “clear” to the club that he wants them to compete for the Brooklyn native’s services.

David is quickly growing his reputation as a “world-class” centre-forward, and arguably what West Ham need. However, they’ll have to wait until later in the year to seal his signature for nothing.
