'Everything is ticking along nicely' – Hazlewood positive about Boxing Day return

He admitted that becoming a three-format player may have contributed to the injury issues

Injured Australia fast bowler Josh Hazlewood is hoping to make himself available for selection for the Boxing Day Test against South Africa while admitting his repeated side injuries could be the cost of trying to be a three-format fast bowler.Hazlewood has missed Australia’s last two Test matches, including the first Test against South Africa in Brisbane, due to a side strain he suffered during the first Test against West Indies in Perth three weeks ago.Related

Hazlewood ruled out of opening Test against South Africa

The 31-year-old had a solid bowl in the nets on Sunday and said his chances of being available for Boxing Day were improving by the day.”[My chances are] much better after today’s session,” Hazlewood told . “Went very much according to plan and pushed upwards of 90% for a couple of deliveries. It’s all about the next three or four sessions before that [session on December] 24th and I can really tick it off. Everything is feeling really nice and I’m not noticing the side at all so fingers crossed.”I had a little bowl on Friday back in Sydney and started up off a few steps and pushed back to a half-run on Friday and today went really well. I pushed back to pretty much full run-up and around 85-90% intensity. Everything is ticking along nicely and going according to plan.”The Perth Test was Hazlewood’s first since March and just his third since January 2021. During last summer’s home Ashes series against England. Hazlewood suffered another side strain in the first Test in Brisbane, which was understood to be different from this current injury and missed the final four Tests of the series. He then played the first Test of the Pakistan tour but was left out of the final two Tests and Australia’s next two Tests in Sri Lanka in June and July when Australia selected two spinners. While not playing much Test cricket, Hazlewood has reached No.1 in the world in the T20I bowling rankings this year and become a highly sought-after player in the IPL.He admitted that becoming a three-format player, having dropped out of Australia’s white-ball calculations in 2019-20 before his re-emergence, may have contributed to the injury issues that have seen him play so little Test cricket in the last two years.”It’s been a bit of a frustrating period,” Hazlewood said. “Especially red ball. White ball has been going great. Maybe that’s the cost of playing all three formats and putting all your energy into every game you play. You don’t have that time to build your strength up or workloads up and get ready for a Test match. I might have to look at that and find a way around it somehow.”If he passes his fitness test at Australia’s main training session on December 24, Hazlewood’s availability creates a selection headache for Australia. Scott Boland has continued his outstanding form at Test level as Hazlewood’s replacement in Adelaide and Brisbane picking up seven wickets across the two games to maintain his staggering Test average at just 10.36. Boland will also be returning to his home ground at the MCG on Boxing Day where he has an extraordinary record in first-class cricket and took stunning figures 6 for 7 on Test debut last year against England.Hazlewood was chosen ahead of Boland for the first Test of the summer against West Indies when both men were fit and available and is seen by the selectors as a first-choice Test bowler when fit, given his career record.

Ferguson could unleash his very own Kris Boyd in £25m Rangers "superstar"

After making a winning start to life as manager in mid-week, perhaps things are looking up for Rangers under Barry Ferguson.

This certainly didn’t appear to be the case for the Ibrox side 14 minutes into Wednesday’s clash, given that the Gers found themselves 2-0 down at Kilmarnock.

Nevertheless, goals from Václav Černý and then Nedim Bajrami, with Cyriel Dessers bagging a brace in-between, saw the Light Blues fight back and leave Rugby Park victorious.

This is the first time since 2010 that Rangers have won a Premiership away game in which they were two goals down, that comeback coming at Pittodrie under the legendary Walter Smith.

So now, ahead of Motherwell’s visit to Ibrox on Saturday and then, far more importantly, the upcoming Europa League last 16 tie against Fenerbahçe, has Ferguson found his own version of Kris Boyd, a duo who played 111 matches together, who can fire Rangers to victory in İstanbul?

Kris Boyd's Rangers legacy

Kris Boyd is a bona fide Rangers legend, having scored 126 goals for the club across two spells, on target, on average, every 118 minutes, winning two Premiership titles, two Scottish Cups and two League Cups.

Given that he also netted 132 times for Kilmarnock across three spells in Ayrshire, Boyd is the top-scorer in SPL history (1998-present), despite the fact, as Graham Ruthven of the Soccer 101 podcast puts it, ‘technically, Boyd wasn’t great’ but he was an ‘incredible finisher’, leading the line at a time when Rangers were extremely dominant.

So, here are all the players who have scored 100+ goals in SPFL top division history; it’s not a very long list but one that illuminates just how good Boyd was at the peak of his powers.

Boyd himself won the Premiership’s Golden Boot on five separate occasions, while his tally of 32 goals in the 2005/06 season, during which he joined from Killie in January, has only been bettered by one Rangers player, namely Ally McCoist in the early-90s, since WWII.

So, how this modern-day Rangers team would love to have an equally clinical finisher in their ranks, but could Ferguson have found his own version of Boyd?

Rangers' modern-day Kris Boyd

In an otherwise generally miserable season, Hamza Igamane has really shone.

He arrived from AS FAR in his native Morocco for just £1.7m last summer, earning rave reviews, hence why the CIES Football Observatory believe he is now worth more than £13m, representing almost an 800% increase in value.

Meantime, in January, amidst interest from Everton, it was reported that Rangers had set a £25m price tag on their star striker, which would be the club’s record outgoing transfer fee, currently held by Calvin Bassey’s £19.6m move to Ajax.

For now, the 22-year-old remains a Rangers player, described by Matthew Elder of the Scotsman as the Premiership’s ‘signing of the season’, while Keith Jackson also of the Daily Record, labels him a ‘superstar’ given his incredible form.

Scottish football writer Kai Watson simply believes Igamane to be ‘destined for big things’, encouraging Rangers supporters to ‘enjoy him while he’s here’.

Igamane has 13 goals to his name this season, memorably bagging a perfect hat-trick at Easter Road in January, while also on target four times during the Europa League league phase, and it is his European statistics we want to examine in more detail.

As the table outlines, and the reason why Igamane is being compared to Boyd, is the fact he is a clinical finisher.

He ranks second in this season’s Europa League for goals per 90, behind only Rasmus Højlund, while the final row of the table is the most interesting, given that he ranks first for goals – xG, scoring four times from a tiny expected goals figure of +1.1.

So, if Ferguson’s side are going to make any headway in Europe, they’ll need their Moroccan centre-forward to continue to be in fine form on the continent.

Head's love affair with Adelaide continues

He has been prolific, scoring 570 runs in his last six Tests in Australia, and hit another high in front of his home crowd

Andrew McGlashan08-Dec-2022

Travis Head on getting through the nineties: Play as straight as possible•Associated Press

There is a lot of talk about whether the Australia men’s team has fallen out of favour with the general public. Regardless of how much truth or otherwise there is around that, there could be no doubt about the affection felt for Travis Head when he brought up a hometown century at Adelaide Oval. Most of the 24,449 spectators who attended the opening day were still there when Head drove Alzarri Joseph down the ground to bring up his fifth Test hundred from 125 balls and there was a lengthy ovation as he soaked in the moment. “The mayor of Adelaide,” injured captain Pat Cummins called him during a commentary stint on earlier in the innings. He was the first South Australia batter to make a hundred at the ground since Greg Blewett’s debut century against England in 1994-95.It continued a prolific home record for Head since the start of last season’s Ashes where he tore apart England with an 85-ball hundred at the Gabba before capping his series with another counter-attacking display on a lively green surface in Hobart. He was Player of the Series despite missing one game with Covid-19.Since the Gabba last season, he has so far made 570 runs in Australia at a strike-rate 87.82. Three hundreds should have been four, but he managed to chop on for 99 against Kraigg Brathwaite in Perth. After that lapse he admitted the moment could haunt him. He has quickly made amends.”Play as straight as possible, try not to cut it off the stumps,” he told on what he was thinking in the 90s. “Cricket’s a funny game. One run does magical things to the brain. It was a long week, nice to get over the line with the next one.”The lift in batting returns, and significantly the strike-rate from before last season, are notable: in his first 19 Tests he struck at 49.65. Scoring rate is not everything in Test cricket (although try telling that to Ben Stokes and Brendon McCullum) but having a counter-attacking middle-order batter, especially to follow the insatiable appetite for run-making of the team’s No. 3 and 4, brings another dimension to the order.Head has also enjoyed a prolific year in ODI cricket where he is averaging 68.75 with a strike-rate of 112.24 and this version of him is the one very familiar to those who have played against him in state cricket.”He’s always been able to change the game,” Marnus Labuschagne, who also ended the opening day unbeaten with a century, said. “I’ve played many games against Travis when we’ve got South Australia on the ropes and [he] comes out and just changes the game. The shadows lengthen at the Adelaide oval•Getty Images

“I always felt like once he played like he wanted to [in Tests] and we knew like he could, almost taking the shackles off and letting him play, he’s certainly not someone who has got the perfect forward defence, but he certainly takes attacks down and is so hard to bowl to. When he’s on a roll he makes big scores. He’s been doing it since we were very young…so I’ve got so much confidence now he’s playing in this manner and taking the game on.”Labuschagne also believed that Head’s slightly less-than textbook technique was one of his strengths.”He’s hitting balls off the top of the stumps for four… he’s just a hard person to stop when he’s going because he plays a bit awkward,” he said. “He sits back, gets low on that back foot, cuts the ball and carves the ball out to the off side. The Australian conditions just suit him beautifully, the bouncier wickets, with the width and just staying a little bit more leg side.”That nod to Australia conditions, and what happened between the two home summers, highlights the challenge ahead for Head. He found life much tougher in Pakistan and Sri Lanka, averaging just 15.16 with a strike-rate of 48.40 across five Tests. In February, Australia travel to India for four Tests and the notion has been floated whether he could lose his place in the XI in a horses-for-courses selection.”They are moments that obviously stand out and it is a stat-based game,” he said before the second Test. “But two series, I am early in my career still in terms of international cricket in the subcontinent. A lot of players have missed out. I’m not going to change the wheel or invent anything different.”That is in the future for Head. For now, he will still have the applause of the Adelaide crowd ringing in his ears.

Naquela partida, o lateral deixou Yony González subir sozinho e ampliar a vantagem do Vozão no jogo.

Tottenham set for £38m forward talks as Levy eyes second attacker after Tel

Tottenham Hotspur have scheduled transfer talks with an elite club, as chairman Daniel Levy eyes further forward signings alongside their potential option-to-buy deal for Bayern Munich loanee Mathys Tel.

Tottenham preparing for Europa League second leg against AZ Alkmaar

Spurs head coach Ange Postecoglou is pinning all of his hopes on the Lilywhites’ Europa League campaign to make good on his early-season promise of winning silverware during his second full season in charge.

£80m player ready to demand exit as Tottenham plan talks for his signing

ByEmilio Galantini Mar 12, 2025

The Australian watched on as his side fell to a 1-0 defeat in their Last 16 first leg tie against AZ Alkmaar, and with the second leg on Thursday, Postecoglou will be busy plotting how best to set up the Spurs team to overcome this deficit.

Tottenham are 13th in the Premier League table, having lost 14 top flight matches already, and are out of both domestic cup competitions after a very underwhelming campaign blighted by injuries to key players.

To make matters worse for Postecoglou, reliable football.london journalist Alasdair Gold broke overnight news that defender Kevin Danso could be set for a spell on the sidelines after he picked up a muscle injury in Spurs’ 2-2 draw with Bournemouth over the weekend.

The Austria international was signed in a last-minute hijack from Wolves to provide much-needed central defensive cover for previously injured first-team duo Micky van de Ven and Cristian Romero, with Danso even emerging as a leader behind-the-scenes at Tottenham since then.

His absence will come as a major blow for Postecoglou, especially considering van de Ven and Romero have proved very unreliable when it comes to availability this term.

Tottenham are reportedly planning to reinforce the squad this summer to avoid a repeat of their disastrous 2024/2025 campaign, with Crystal Palace defender Marc Guehi a top target for Spurs as they plan to reopen talks.

Crystal Palace's MarcGuehicelebrates after the match

They also want to bring in more attacking options, and Bayern Munich winger Kingsley Coman has now become a viable option for them.

Tottenham set to be offered Kingsley Coman in talks with Bayern Munich

According to GiveMeSport, Spurs are set for end-of-season negotiations with Bayern over completing a permanent deal for Tel, and during these sit-down discussions, the possibility of signing Coman will arise.

Indeed, it is believed that Bayern will offer Tottenham the chance to sign Coman during these conversations, as Vincent Kompany’s side are eager to offload the Frenchman and find him a new club.

Bayern Munich's KingsleyComancelebrates

It is unclear what Spurs’ stance is on striking a deal for the 28-year-old, who has suffered from his fair share of injury problems throughout an undoubtedly illustrious career, but other reports suggest Bayern have set a price tag at up to £34 million.

Levy and co also want more potential forward signings with a permanent move for Tel, so this could be one to watch as we slowly head into the summer. Called “unbelievable” by Rio Ferdinand, Coman has been used more as an impact player under Kompany – scoring six goals and assisting four others in all competitions with half of his Bundesliga appearances coming off the bench this term.

The WPL auction, set for early February, will have auction purses of INR 12 crore (USD 1.46 million approx) per team. Each team can buy a minimum of 15 and a maximum of 18 players, including seven overseas ones, of which one must be from an Associate country. Unlike in the men’s IPL, WPL teams will have the option of fielding up to five overseas players in the XI, provided, again that one is from an Associate team.A total of 22 matches will be played in WPL 2023, with each team playing the other twice to make it a total of eight games per team. Michael Neser's four-wicket haul keeps Ashes selectors interested

Worcestershire up against it as Glamorgan head for decisive first-innings lead

Glamorgan 177 for 6 (Lloyd 48, Labuschagne 42, Finch 3-39) lead Worcestershire 109 (Harris 4-18, Neser 4-40) by 68 runsMichael Neser further stated his case for Australian selection this summer with a hugely impressive four wicket haul for Glamorgan in their LV= Insurance County Championship match against Worcestershire in Cardiff.Neser, in partnership with Timm van der Gugten, ripped through the Worcestershire top order on a slow pitch and moisty morning before James Harris claimed four wickets of his own as the visitors were bowled out for 109.The Glamorgan top order also found batting challenging on a day where it swung and seamed throughout. They reached the close on 177 for six with runs from David Lloyd and Marnus Labuschagne the bright spot for the home side on a day when the bowlers were in charge. It was Matthew Waite, in his first full season after leaving Yorkshire, who claimed the big prize of Australia’s Ashes hope, Labuschagne, when he inside-edged onto his stumps for 42.Glamorgan are 68 runs in front on first innings with 16 wickets falling on the first day. The lead is growing and, unless this pitch flattens out as it has done in Cardiff this season in previous matches, it could well prove to be a matchwinning one.Van der Gugten and Neser were on song from the outset with the pair causing chaos with the new ball to leave the visitors 25 for five. Taylor Cornall was the first to go when he was trapped lbw by van der Gugten. Neser dismissed Ed Pollock and Jack Haynes in the space of three balls, both batters caught in the cordon.Pakistan international, Azhar Ali, was brilliantly caught by Labuschagne in the slips off van der Gugten. The catch went fast and low and Labuschagne clung on one-handed. Worcestershire captain, Brett D’Oliveira, who was trapped lbw by an inswinger ball from Neser. There would have been hope of some respite when Neser and van der Gugten came out of the attack, but Adam Hose was dismissed for a 15-ball duck to the first delivery bowled by James Harris. It was a wider ball and Hose tried to smash it through the covers but an inside edge took the ball onto his stumps to leave Worcestershire 34 for six.”A very weird day,” remarked Worcestershire’s assistat coach, Kadeer Ali. “Obviously we were disappointing with the bat.”The first meaningful partnership of the Worcestershire innings followed with Gareth Roderick and Matthew Waite taking their team to 66 for six at the lunch break. Neser returned after the interval to break the stand but Roderick and Joe Leach took the score past 100.A three-wicket burst from James Harris, with the last two falling from consecutive deliveries, finished things up with Worcestershire 109 all out. Harris will be on a hat-trick when he bowls in the second innings.Joe Leach claimed the early wicket of Eddie Byrom to give the visitors the perfect start but the Worcestershire fielding was sloppy in the opening overs. Jack Haynes put down both Lloyd and Labuschagne in the slip cordon. The two Glamorgan batters put on a stand worth 81 before Lloyd was bowled by Leach for 48, his highest score of the season thus far.It was after the tea interval that things clicked for Worcestershire. When Lloyd was dismissed, Glamorgan were 88 for two and looked to be cruising to a significant first innings lead before a burst of four wickets for just 21 runs brought Worcestershire back into the game, with Adam Finch the pick of the bowlers with his figures of three for 39.
