South Africa go top as New Zealand slump to third straight defeat

Centuries from Quinton de Kock and Rassie van der Dussen and a four-wicket haul from Keshav Maharaj headlined a 190-run rout

Have New Zealand been unlucky?

One of the advantages of a long-drawn league phase is that teams have an opportunity to make up for indifferent starts. But New Zealand are finding out the converse can be true as well. A third straight loss amid a series of injuries in the camp threatens to throw their World Cup campaign off the rails.Related

South Africa smash England's World Cup six-hitting record

If the loss to Australia in Dharamsala was heartbreaking, this one to South Africa in Pune was outright demoralising. The bowlers were sent on a leather hunt as Quinton de Kock and Rassie van der Dussen plundered centuries, and David Miller added more salt to the wounds with a blistering 30-ball 53 not out as South Africa posted 357 for 4; the last 10 overs alone brought them 119 runs.In reply, New Zealand’s top order unraveled against South Africa’s quality pace attack under lights. Marco Jansen’s extra bounce accounted for Devon Conway and Rachin Ravindra, Will Young was out nicking behind off Gerald Coetzee, and Kagiso Rabada had Tom Latham chipping one to cover.Daryl Mitchell kept hope flickering, oozing class and confidence as he played a couple of gorgeous on-drives, but his dismissal while looking to hit out against Keshav Maharaj in the 19th over opened the floodgates. The game became staggeringly one-sided as New Zealand petered to 167 all out, with only Glenn Phillips offering any resistance to make 60.The defeat, and the quantum of it, was massive from a tournament’s standpoint, with New Zealand now slipping back to potentially enter a logjam for fourth place, which Pakistan, Afghanistan and Sri Lanka are all eyeing. Few would have expected New Zealand to cave in the manner they did, even after South Africa had set them 358.Quinton de Kock ane Rassie van der Dussen added 200 for the second wicket•ICC/Getty Images

New Zealand’s capitulation was a sharp contrast to how things panned out for South Africa after they were put into bat.Temba Bavuma was the early aggressor, crunching two cover drives off Matt Henry in the fourth over to kick the innings into gear. De Kock was largely subdued and fidgety early on, and even copped a blow to the shoulder from a Trent Boult bouncer in the ninth over. At that point, South Africa’s innings had barely gotten out of second gear. Having roughed up de Kock, Boult had sent Bavuma back with a sucker ball, a full one that had him nicking low to Mitchell at slip.It could have been wickets in back-to-back overs for New Zealand had Phillips latched on to a screamer at backward point off Tim Southee. That we’re even talking about it being a chance was down to his brilliance – anticipating de Kock’s cut and taking two steps to his right before flinging himself full-stretch to go one-handed. De Kock was on 12 off 24 at that point. At the other end, van der Dussen helped himself to a pull to begin proceedings as Southee, coming in for the first game of his fourth World Cup, seemed erratic and down on pace to begin with. For much of the first 100 runs in their 200-run stand, de Kock and van der Dussen were steady and calculating, playing themselves into a position from which they could tee off in the back 15. It’s a plan that worked to the T for them, and perhaps much more easily than they may have anticipated because New Zealand had a massive hole to fill midway through.Henry pulled his hamstring halfway through his sixth over, the 27th of the innings, to leave Ravindra, James Neesham and Phillips to bowl 14.3 overs between them. De Kock and van der Dussen accelerated knowing fully well that New Zealand needed to back-load their part-timers.Aiden Markram, Keshav Maharaj and Temba Bavuma celebrate Daryl Mitchell’s wicket•AFP/Getty Images

The first sign of de Kock breaking the shackles came in the 16th over when he got stuck into Southee. He followed an imperious pull in front of square for four by walloping a six over the bowler’s head. De Kock had another slice of luck soon after when he chipped Phillips into the leg side, with the ball falling between three fielders. De Kock soon brought up his half-century off 62 deliveries and van der Dussen followed suit, getting there off 61.New Zealand’s cup of woe was far from over. Neesham, one of the part-timers called on to make up overs, suffered a blow of his own when he was struck flush on the thumb by a de Kock straight drive. On 95, de Kock should have been run out off the same delivery when he was sent back even as the ball deflected to Mitchell Santner at cover. The batter had given up hope when Santner fired a throw at the bowler’s end, but it missed the stumps. De Kock soon brought up his hundred – his fourth of this World Cup, which left him one behind Rohit Sharma’s record of five in a single edition – by getting inside the line and helping a pull deep beyond the fine leg fence for six. He reached the century off 103 balls, and seemed to be revving up for a big finish. At the other end, the industrious van der Dussen brought out cute reverse paddles and sweeps to throw New Zealand’s spinners off gear. The second-wicket pair had added 200 at better than a run-a-ball when de Kock picked out point to give Southee a wicket in the 40th over. It’s at this point that South Africa pulled out a surprise move, pushing Miller up the order, seemingly to keep the left-right combination going, and he tore into the bowling at the death to get to his half-century in 29 balls. Neesham went for 69 off his 5.3 overs, and conceded 18 in the 50th.While New Zealand walked off knowing they had a big chase, there was a sense that the game was still in the balance given how well they had batted in big chases against England and Australia. But their hopes were dashed by a South African attack that made you wonder if this was the same surface New Zealand had bowled on.After the top order was blown away, Phillips delayed the inevitable, getting in some batting time amid a lower-order collapse. By the end, New Zealand were so desperate to minimise the damage to their net run rate that an injured Henry hobbled out to bat and gave Phillips company for 5.1 overs, in the process adding 34 for the final wicket. However, even that didn’t quite diminish the magnitude of the defeat, which, all told, was a proper pasting.

President's Trophy off to a rocky start as SSGC pulls out

The department has stars such as Imam-ul-Haq, Babar Azam, Abrar Ahmed and Khurram Shehzad on its books

Deparmental cricket in Pakistan has waxed and waned depending on who has been in power at the PCB•AFP/Getty Images

Departmental cricket returned to Pakistan after five seasons with the start of the President’s Trophy earlier this week, and the resumption has not gone without incident.Days before the tournament was supposed to start, Sui Southern Gas Pipelines (SSGC), one of the major department sides, pulled out, arguing that running a cricket team was not a top priority at the moment. SSGC had stars such as Imam-ul-Haq, Babar Azam, Abrar Ahmed and Khurram Shahzad on their books, though these players weren’t likely to be involved given they are playing international cricket.”As you know the SSGC is a public-sector utility company listed on the country’s stock exchange,” an SSCG spokesperson told , which broke the story. “So, with the inception of the winter season, the utility’s top priority is to ensure uninterrupted gas supplies to its over three million customers. The management is focused on serving its customers while combating tough challenges in the backdrop of widening demand-and-supply gap.”That has left the tournament with seven sides, including traditional department giants such as SNGPL (Sui Northern Gas Pipelines), WAPDA (Water and Power Development Authority) and KRL (Khan Research Laboratories). The tournament was brought back into the calendar after the return to the PCB last year of Najam Sethi, who replace Ramiz Raja as chairman. Sethi headed an interim administration in which one of the main objectives was to bring back the PCB constitution from 2014, as well as bring departments back into the game.Departments such as PIA (Pakistan International Airlines, the state carrier) and HBL (Habib Bank) were an integral part of the domestic set-up for nearly 50 years, providing first-class cricketers with a regular, stable income and the prospect of an employed future post their playing days. In 2018 Imran Khan, the former Pakistan captain, became the country’s Prime Minister, and, as patron of the PCB, had domestic cricket substantially restructured along the lines he had been advocating for years: a Sheffield-Shield-style set-up with six province-based sides playing the Quaid-e-Azam Trophy. Department cricket, to some criticism, was disbanded with players – hitherto employed by them and earning regular salaries – affected the most. A number of first-class cricketers stopped playing the game because there were drastically fewer sides to play for.Sethi has since been replaced by Zaka Ashraf in another interim set-up that is due to run until February. Ashraf’s administration does not have the power to change the domestic set-up and has gone ahead with the President’s Trophy. But interest in participation in the tournament has been lukewarm, with a few departments who had traditionally fielded teams opting to not do so again. The tournament is also being played under new regulations that have not yet been announced publicly but limit the first innings of games to 80 overs. That stipulation is said to have been made to encourage more positive cricket though it has had its critics. Bazid Khan, the former Pakistan batter, called it “utter nonsense” and said it was “devaluing” the first-class game.

Kraigg Brathwaite, meanwhile, called for West Indies to be given more Test cricket

The pain of a first home defeat as Test captain for Pat Cummins was still raw, but he was able to appreciate the bigger picture of what had unfolded on a dramatic fourth day at the Gabba, while his opposite number Kraigg Brathwaite reiterated his call for West Indies to be given more Test cricket. When Josh Hazlewood’s off stump was extracted by Shamar Joseph, it gave West Indies their first victory in Australia since 1997, when Cummins was just four years old. The visitors had arrived shorn of experience, the majority of their caps split between just two players, but conjured one of the biggest upsets of all time by taking Australia’s last eight wickets for 96 runs – seven of them by Shamar.”Yeah, you can [see the significance],” Cummins said. “Which isn’t necessarily helpful because you are still hurting after a loss. They outplayed us, they played brilliantly. I know a lot of the talk coming into this was there were some debutants and some names who hadn’t traveled over here before, but once you put out an international XI, you know it’s going to be tough.Related

Cummins: Shamar was right up for it and we weren't good enough

A fairy-tale day in the life of Shamar Joseph

“They’ve been fantastic, they created a couple of new superstars that we didn’t know about before the series and as a cricket fan, as a Test-match cricket fan, there’s a part of me that was happy to watch.”Brathwaite, meanwhile, believed that West Indies’ bid to rebuild as a Test team was not helped by the long gaps between series.”I do believe we should be playing more Test cricket more consistently,” Brathwaite said. “Our next Test is July 10, which is a long while away. I believe we have the talent and have shown the world we can win Test matches, but we need to play more.”However, he also acknowledged that while a famous victory should be savoured, the players must maintain the focus that has helped them compete on this tour. “That’s how we keep pushing ourselves,” he said. “When you play Test cricket you are playing against the best in the world. The key for us is to never slack off and have heart. Obviously this team has a lot of heart. My theme to the guys is you did well, but this is just one Test win, we have a number of Tests remaining this year, so this same attitude we had, it has to continue.”The result, reminiscent of the seven-run loss to New Zealand in Hobart in 2011, which ended with very similar scenes to the Gabba with David Warner carrying his bat while this time it was Steven Smith, capped a home summer where, until now, Australia had found a way to score enough runs without being dominant except for the first Test against Pakistan in Perth.’I believe we have the talent and have shown the world we can win Test matches, but we need to play more’ – Kraigg Brathwaite•Getty Images

Data shows that batting has become tougher overall in Australia in recent seasons, and the earlier performances of Mitchell Marsh and Travis Head are given added weight because of that, but at the Gabba, Smith was left with a little bit too much to do, even though he threatened to win the game late on when he scooped Alzarri Joseph for six.”There’s been times when batters have got us out of trouble and times when bowlers have got us out of trouble,” Cummins said of the relative lack of big top-order runs. “That’s probably been the story of this team over the last few years. Even in the Pakistan series, there were so many little moments where it took a bowler or a batter to stand up and [we] found a way to win, unfortunately that wasn’t the case with this one. These wickets have been tougher to score runs on than perhaps in the past. [But] ideally, those kinds of totals, we are chasing down.”On Smith, who was elevated to open at the start of the series, Cummins added: “Other than two dismissals, they are the only two balls he hasn’t looked like he’s middled. He’s class, has been class for 15 years. Thought he was brilliant the way he managed the innings then through the different kind of passages and almost single-handedly dragged us over the line.”Cummins also defended his decision to declare nine down and still 22 behind in the first innings to give the bowlers a crack at West Indies’ batters under lights on the second evening. “You never get to look at the other option, do you?” he said. “We created two chances that night and felt like at night was still the best chance to create a couple of wickets. Felt like that played out pretty well.”
