Rodgers admits "there'll always be criticism"
It’s been a frustrating week for the Hoops so far after being forced to settle for a point at Red Star Belgrade. The Bhoys once again came up short on the European stage, although manager Brendan Rodgers claimed that it was a good point and admitted that “there’ll always be criticism” on such a stage.
The big positive for Celtic to take from Belgrade is Kelechi Iheanacho’s second goal in three games for the club. The former Leicester City striker didn’t exactly receive the instant support of those at Celtic Park after arriving late on in the summer window, but has since proved several doubters wrong.
With Hibernian up next, Iheanacho will be looking to make his mark yet again to hand Rodgers the talisman that he has been seeking. That said, even after the Nigerian’s arrival, the Bhoys still have unfinished business in the transfer window.
Reports are now suggesting that they’ve joined the race to sign a teenage talent alongside Atletico Madrid and Chelsea in 2026.
Celtic join race to sign Oyirwoth
As reported by The Blazing Musket, Celtic are now racing to sign Allan Oyirwoth alongside Atletico Madrid and Chelsea. The three clubs have all set their sights on the New England Revolution midfielder, who has already made his mark on senior football in the MSL.
Already earning plenty of praise, Oyirwoth was described as “very talented” by New England teammate Matt Polster earlier this month and is certainly a player to watch.
Of course, jumping ahead of Atletico Madrid and Chelsea in the race for his signature will be no easy task, but Celtic can offer the vital game time that their rivals are unlikely to hand the midfielder.

No team possibly got the choice of replacement players better than Chennai Super Kings (CSK), but Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH), another team to have exited IPL 2025 early, might have laid their hands on a superstar for the future. “A lot of spinners, when they are under pressure – are looking to bowl it a bit quicker – lose that integrity of the ball where you’ve got the seam coming up over the top, it tends to come more on the side, so it just becomes a quicker ball, which disappears even further. So it’s how the ball arrives on to the pitch is the most important thing. His arrival, the ball’s arrival, has always got a really nice shape to it, and dip to it, with the change of pace. Therefore, from a batting perspective, it’s a lot harder to judge [and] just hit the ball out of the ground.”To both Kumble and Moody, the India A stint could well be the first step towards something bigger.”I see him as a Test bowler as much as a T20 bowler,” Moody said. “I look at him and think, ‘wow, imagine facing this guy on a turning track’.”Kumble agreed. “He certainly has the potential, and we’ve seen him bowl today in the white-ball format. Manchester United’s poor start to the 2025/26 season has once again cranked up the pressure on manager Ruben Amorim, with uncertainty now emerging around his future.
The 40-year-old took the reins last November, but was unable to catapult the Red Devils up the Premier League table – subsequently ending the year in a record-low 15th place.
However, after £200m worth of new additions during the off-season, he’s been unable to transform the side, already losing 50% of their top-flight outings to date.
His side even got knocked out at the first hurdle in the Carabao Cup, losing to League Two side Grimsby Town on penalties, something which has no doubt pushed him closer to the exit door.
Despite constant reports that no change of manager is expected in the immediate future, numerous managers are being lined up to potentially take the reins at Old Trafford.
Man Utd’s manager hunt to replace Amorim
Over the last couple of days, Crystal Palace manager Oliver Glasner has been hugely linked with the role at United – understandably so given his recent form at Selhurst Park.
The Austrian has led the Eagles to an 18-game unbeaten run, beating Liverpool at the weekend and subsequently adding to their recent FA Cup and Community Shield triumphs.
However, he’s not the only boss currently in their sights at present, with the Red Devils hierarchy considering a move for Bournemouth head coach Andoni Iraola, according to The Sun.
Their report claims that the United board are hugely impressed with his work at the Vitality and could be tempted to make a move should Amorim be given his marching orders.
It also states that he’s part of the club’s current shortlist to replace the 40-year-old, currently sitting alongside Glasner, but it remains to be seen if they are set to pursue either of the aforementioned candidates.
Why United’s latest target would be their answer to Arteta
Whilst Arsenal are a club very few United fans are content with, many of the supporters must be feeling an ounce of jealously in the direction of the Gunners under Mikel Arteta.
The Spaniard is nearing six years in charge at the Emirates, only winning one major trophy, but he’s transformed the side into consistent Premier League title contenders.
His side have finished as runners up in each of the last three years, but could go one further this time around, subsequently showing glimpses of a successful side – as seen by their late comeback against Newcastle United.
The 43-year-old has given the fanbase a reason to be proud of their club, something which Iraola has also done with the Cherries – but certainly on a different level to his compatriot.
He took charge of the South Coast outfit back in the summer of 2023, but has taken the club to new heights – achieving their best ever top-flight finish by ending the year in 9th last time around.
However, he’s certainly faced adversity in recent times, losing key players like Dean Huijsen, Milos Kerkez and Illia Zabarnyi to many of Europe’s giants during the recent summer.
Despite the departures, he’s led the Cherries to 6th place after the first six outings, with their only defeat coming against Liverpool on the opening day at Anfield.
In the words of journalist James Horncastle – via John Brewin of the Libero podcast – he is the “best coach in the Premier League”.
Iraola, who’s been labelled “phenomenal” by one journalist, has achieved a 40% win rate at the Vitality, winning 38 of his 94 matches in charge – subsequently doing so on a shoestring budget.
There’s no doubt he would have a huge amount of money to play with at United, which in turn could allow him to make the desired changes to try and battle with his compatriot, who’s in charge of the Gunners.

The similarities to Arteta are there for all to see, with both being the same age and making a huge impact in England’s top-flight after their respective appointments.
Both also came from the Basque Country, with United having the chance to appoint an incredible manager should they decide to pursue a move for Iraola in the months ahead.
His stint at Bournemouth has made him one of the most talented young managers in Europe, but it’s unclear how much the Cherries would demand for his signature in the months ahead.
It remains to be seen if Iraola would be open to the job at Old Trafford, but if he can replicate such talents with the Red Devils – there’s no reason as to why they can’t rise up the table under his guidance in the future.

– Foi absoluta coincidência! Estava com um grupo de amigos no shopping, tínhamos acabado de tomar um milk-shake. Passamos pelo lugar no qual aconteceu tudo alguns minutos depois. A loja (uma joalheria) estava fechada e havia a movimentação depois do episódio que aconteceu. AÍ a gente ficou acompanhando tudo – disse.

For all that there was tension as England hunted down 371 to win the first Test against India earlier this week, most of it had dissipated by the time Jamie Smith planted his front foot to Ravindra Jadeja, and blazed England past the finish line with a volley of four, six, six in the first over of the fifth day’s final hour.It was, as Smith explained this week, a pre-meditated assault. He had chatted with his batting partner Joe Root at the drinks break, and decided that, with India already armed with the new ball and with Jasprit Bumrah always lurking around the corner, it was time to seal the deal before India had a chance to get even the slightest sniff of a fightback.”The runs at that point were not too many, so I wasn’t expecting him to come on and bowl, but you’re just never quite sure, especially in cricket,” Smith said at a Rothesay media event in London. “You don’t know what will happen. I always back our tail but there could be a couple of decent balls and suddenly you’re eight-down and the pressure’s back on you again. It was nice to just get it done and move on.”Related

That burst of aggression might not have been a remarkable option, had it not been for what had happened in England’s first innings. Back on the third afternoon, and with Smith similarly placed on 40 not out, he had again swung across the line – this time to Prasidh Krishna – and holed out to deep square leg to expose England’s lower-middle order to the second new ball.The two moments offer a microcosm of England’s no-consequences attitude. For all that the team was hailed for playing “Bazball with brains”, as Michael Vaughan put it on Test Match Special, the fundamentals of their mindset appear not to have altered massively. So long as there is method to the chosen madness, it appears anything still goes in the McCullum-Stokes regime.”It’s great,” Smith said. “Having that belief from other people is something that definitely took my game to the next level. When you’re out there batting, it is you and your partner at the other end, so it’s quite individual, but to have that backing and trust that other people are doing the same thing, you don’t feel you’re alone when you’re doing what you feel is right in that moment.”When you are caught on the boundary trying to hit the ball for six, you feel you’re not going to get a slap on the wrist. “I knew there was a new ball coming and it looks as though I’d exposed Chris Woakes [at No.8] but, at that point, if I’d hit another couple of sixes in that over, you’re taking all the momentum into the new ball. The second new ball can bring wickets but it can increase the scoring rate as well. There’s always a little bit of calculated thinking behind it.”A lack of overthinking, however, remains one of England’s core principles. Speaking at the end of the first Test, while Stokes was enjoying the last laugh after criticism of his decision to bowl first, he reiterated that he and McCullum are a “simple-minded pair”, and that the team’s task, when everything else is stripped back, remains “scoring more runs than your opposition”.And so, when confronted with a second-innings scoreline of 302 for 5, with an awkward 69 runs still needed, this lack of complication was very much to Smith’s liking as he walked out to join Root.”It was simple in that you knew you had to chase the runs and we weren’t going to block out for the draw,” he said. “We were always going to be positive and try to get the runs. It was a rapid outfield and as good a batting conditions as you could have on day five. It wasn’t misbehaving too much as the Test went on, so you always felt as though you could keep it simple, you didn’t have to do things too out the box to get the runs which is very helpful.”It was certainly seemed to be India who cracked first as the final day wore on, thanks principally to Ben Duckett’s and Zak Crawley’s opening stand of 188, but also through the relentless optimism that the rest of the batting line-up brought to their task – including the captain, Stokes, who struggled against Jadeja’s left-arm line outside his off stump, but rarely stopped going for his strokes in a 51-ball 33.”It’s hard when you’re out there and you’re focused on the job at hand,” Smith said. “You know the importance of that moment, when you have the opportunity to start the series with a win, that your focus is all on that.”When they’re trying to get 10 wickets and you’re chasing 370, it’s not everyday that gets done. There could have been some head-downs at the end but they kept trying all day. I see a lot of chat about maybe some inexperience on their part but I thought they were fantastic throughout the five days.”
