Injury prone Daniel Sturridge could be crucial to Liverpool’s title challenge this season

After their mammoth summer spend on Fabinho, Naby Keita, Alisson and Shaqiri, Liverpool now have one of the best team in Europe and are realistically, City’s main title rival.

Following their bittersweet finish to the season last year where the Reds slipped to fourth while also losing in the Champions League Final, Liverpool had to reinvest into their squad.

After such a great transfer window, Klopp’s men got their season off to a great start as they beat West Ham 4-0.

While Klopp has an outstanding starting XI, the depth of his squad is going to be crucial for his side’s chances of winning the title this year.

The likes of Adam Lallana, Xerdan Shaqiri and Dominic Solanke are going to have a big role in deciding where Liverpool finish this season.

Another player that is also going to be crucial in Liverpool’s title hopes this year, is England international, Daniel Sturridge.

The Breakdown

Alongside Luis Suarez and Raheem Sterling, Sturridge was part of a side that came ever so close to securing Liverpool’s first Premier League title.

Sturridge’s talent has never been in doubt and during his first full season with the club, he showcased why he is still one of the most talented English players in the league, scoring 22 goals in 29 games.

The only problem for Klopp is if he can keep Sturridge fit. If Sturridge can manage to stay injury free for a large part of the season, the 28-year-old could be incredibly useful coming off the bench to replace Roberto Firmino.

So Liverpool fans, how crucial is Daniel Sturridge to your title hopes?

Leeds fans react after reported summer target Jonathan Kodjia scores twice

Reported Leeds United summer target Jonathan Kodjia impressed and scored twice for Aston Villa in their 2-2 draw against Brentford at Villa Park on Wednesday night, and Whites fans were quick to react to his performance.

An exclusive report by Football Insider said last month that Marcelo Bielsa, who must sign a highly-rated West Ham United teenager on a season-long loan deal, was eyeing a move for the Ivory Coast international as he looked for a marquee signing up top, but a deal failed to materialise as Patrick Bamford eventually arrived at Elland Road.

Despite some injury issues last term, Kodjia looked to be getting back to his best with his showing against the Bees, netting two fine goals to salvage a point for Steve Bruce’s men.

Leeds supporters took to social media to have their say on the 28-year-old centre-forward’s most recent display, and while one said “maybe Leeds should have gone for him”, another said “come to Leeds king Kodjia”.

Pundit’s Choice: Ederson

Manchester City sent out an emphatic message to the rest of the Premier League on Sunday afternoon: It’s business as usual for the centurions.Â

A 6-1 victory over Huddersfield kicked-off their home campaign at the Etihad Stadium in a manner which suggested that the club are still comfortably in top gear this season. Any slight fears of a title-winning hangover have been banished with back-to-back Premier League victories and it appears that Pep Guardiola’s City slickers are the team to beat once again.

From back to front the entriety of City’s immaculately oiled machine were worthy of individual praise on Sunday afternoon, especially Sergio Aguero who opened his Premier League account for the season with a hat-trick. For all of City’s awe-inspiring play in the final-third, it was actually their goalkeeper Ederson who came in for some special praise on social media for the part he played in City’s opener.

Indeed, Robbie Savage was quick to laud the Brazilian for his through ball to Aguero directly from a goal-kick which was aptly described as “absolutely ridiculous” via his Twitter account.

Ederson (valued at £45 million by Transfermarkt) rapidly established himself as a genuine fan-favourite last season for the calming influence he injected into Man City’s defence after signing from Benfica. His ability to use both his hands and his feet to brilliant effect was quickly recognised by the supporters who had become accustomed to holding their breath every time the ball went near Claudio Bravo’s goal in the 2016/17 season.

The quality of his distribution is arguably unrivalled in world football, and he continued to prove what an excellent footballer he is on Sunday afternoon with his incisive through ball to Aguero which dissected the Terriers defence and handed the Argentine the opportunity to open the scoring at the Etihad.

There was still plenty of work to do for Aguero when he collected the ball in the final-third, but Ederson simply couldn’t have weighted the pass any better, and the praise he received from Savage was thoroughly justified.

Aguero may well have stolen the plaudits with his emphatic chip over Ben Hamer and his subsequent hat-trick, but Ederson’s contribution more than merited a special mention in the media on an afternoon when he was otherwise a spectator between the sticks.

Liverpool fans impressed with Ejaria’s goal for Rangers in thrilling Motherwell clash

During a season, most fans like to keep track of the players that are elsewhere on loan.

Liverpool have a handful of youngsters plying their trade at various clubs on a temporary basis.

Ovie Ejaria is one of them and the midfielder is currently on loan at Rangers, which are being led by manager Steven Gerrard.

The former Liverpool captain signed the 20-year-old on a deal until the end of the season.

Gerrard is already well aware of Ejaria’s qualities having been part of the academy coaching staff for over a year before taking over at Rangers.

Ejaria has been part of the Liverpool fold since 2014 when he joined from Arsenal’s academy, and he remains on the fringes of first-team action.

Since moving to Rangers, the midfielder has made 11 appearances in all competitions and he scored his first goal for the Scottish outfit in a thrilling 3-3 draw with Motherwell.

The result of a counter-attack ended in Ejaria taking a few touches before sweeping it past the goalkeeper and into the back of the net.

Tottenham should move for Juan Mata at the start of 2019

Tottenham Hotspur failed to make a signing during the summer transfer window, but the capital outfit should move for Manchester United’s Juan Mata at the start of 2019.

What’s the word, then?

Mata joined United from Chelsea in January 2014, and the 41-time Spain international is closing on 200 appearances for the Red Devils in all competitions.

The versatile attacker started United’s first two matches of the 2018-19 Premier League season, but was left out of the squad for the fixtures with Tottenham Hotspur and Burnley.

The 30-year-old managed three goals and five assists in 28 Premier League appearances last term, and has proved a valuable player for the Red Devils in recent seasons.

Mata has largely been used in a right-sided attacking position, however, and has struggled for consistency in that area of the field.

The likeable forward will see his United deal expire at the end of this season, and Tottenham should test the waters with a move when the January transfer window opens for business.

Why should Tottenham move for Mata?

According to the Manchester Evening News, Mata was the subject of an enquiry from Tottenham chairman Daniel Levy during the summer window.

[brid autoplay=”true” video=”288872″ player=”12034″ title=”Rafas Pub Facts Murray The Magician & Desperately Seeking Zaha”]

United were not interested in doing business at that point, but the situation could change at the start of 2019 due to Mata’s contract situation.

Mata, in his personal blog, has already admitted that he was disappointed to be left out of the clash with Burnley on Sunday afternoon, and is keen to return to the Spain set-up under Luis Enrique.

That will require first-team action, however, and a change of scenery would do him good.

Mata still has plenty to offer at the top level, and would boost a Tottenham squad that has won little despite its obvious talent.

A cut-price move for a player of Mata’s experience and talent is a no-brainer for Spurs, and Levy should open his cheque book in January.

Marco Benassi: An understated signing to help Man City reach new heights

Manchester City could be on the lookout for a new central midfielder when the January transfer window opens.

Pep Guardiola was desperate to add another face to his engine room during the summer window but couldn’t add to the £60m addition of Riyad Mahrez. The Citizens had targeted Napoli’s Jorginho, and a deal seemed close until Chelsea swooped in at the last minute and sealed a move. Reports have suggested Guardiola will now turn his attention to Wolves maestro – Ruben Neves.

Instead, City should launch a bid to sign Fiorentina dynamo – Marco Benassi. Valued at £11.7m by Transfermarkt, the 24-year-old has flourished since leaving Inter Milan in 2014. After progressing through the club’s youth academy, Benassi was sold to Torino in a deal that brought Danilo D’Ambrosio to the San Siro. While the latter struggled, Benassi would go on to captain Torino before signing for Fiorentina last summer.

The Italian was a key player for his new side, making 35 appearances in the Serie A, scoring five and assisting two as Fiorentina ended the campaign in eighth. Benassi has made an excellent start to the new campaign with three goals in his first two appearances.

The former Italy U21 international can be the man Guardiola is looking for. He has all the qualities of a box-to-box midfielder that would thrive in the Premier League. While his passing accuracy leaves much to be desired, Benassi would slot seamlessly into the Spaniard’s system at the Etihad.

Under the former Barcelona manager’s tutelage, he could become a Premier League great.

Emery calls on Arsenal to offer Monreal a new contract

Arsenal boss Unai Emery has revealed he is keen for the club to offer Nacho Monreal a new contract, in quotes published by The Mirror.

What’s the word?

Unai Emery has seen his options on the left side of defence depleted this season, with Sead Kolasinac injured and even stand-in Ainsley Maitland-Niles face a lengthy spell on the sidelines after picking up a knock of his own.

That has left Nacho Monreal, who himself started the season injured, as the only recognised senior left-back available to Emery – and his long-term future is not certain as he edges towards the expiration of his deal next summer.

32-year-old Monreal will, therefore, be available on a free transfer and has attracted the interest of Barcelona but Emery has expressed his desire for his compatriot to be offered a new deal at the Emirates Stadium.

What was said?

“First, I knew Nacho Monreal in Spain when he was playing in Osasuna and in Malaga. After six years here, I came and I know him as a new Nacho Monreal.

“After two weeks, after two months and now, I can say that I am very happy with him because he is 32 years old but I think physically, with his performances with us in matches, he is playing with a very good level.

“The rest of that, for me, is very important. I think we need to find a new contract with him to stay with the Arsenal team.”

Should he sign?

At his age, it is clear that Monreal does not have a long-term future at Arsenal. However, it is also clear that the Gunners do not have a replacement ready and losing the Spain international next year could create problems.

[brid autoplay=”true” video=”292154″ player=”12034″ title=”Watch The FFC Accy Show Real football is back with our PL & EFL accumulators”]

Kolasinac, signed on a free transfer from Schalke last summer, has failed to cement a regular spot in the starting line-up and has largely been unable to compete with Monreal for a defensive role – often introduced off the bench in a more advanced position in the last year of Arsene Wenger’s tenure.

Maitland-Niles, the player who started the season at left-back, is not naturally a player who thrives in that position and his best role is in midfield. Therefore, Arsenal need to dip into the market to find a replacement for Monreal.

The issue, however, is that Arsenal have more pressing matters. Aaron Ramsey’s uncertain future could prove costly for the Gunners, as could the fact that Mesut Ozil is struggling for form – and they are still yet to land a replacement for Alexis Sanchez.

That may mean funds for a new left-back are limited and the easy solution is to hand Monreal an extended deal.

Revealed: 51% of fans believe Eriksen is a better signing than Ozil

There has been little to split Arsenal and Tottenham so far this season, with the two North London clubs level on nine points after the opening five games of the campaign.

Spurs started in fine form by winning three in a row before losing to Watford and Liverpool either side of the international break, while the Gunners bounced back from consecutive defeats to start the season to beat West Ham, Cardiff City and Newcastle United.

[brid autoplay=”true” video=”291495″ player=”12034″ title=”Rafa’s Pub Facts Giroud Emulates Zidane & Rashford Emulates… Welbeck!”]

With such a fine line between the two clubs, the importance of the creativity from Christian Eriksen and Mesut Ozil could be key and we asked fans which of the pair was a better signing after the duo celebrated five years in the Premier League.

Eriksen finished with a narrow advantage of 51% of the votes, with Ozil narrowly behind on 49% – showing that there is also very little to split the two players in the views of the supporters that voted.

Ozil opened his account for the season by scoring the second goal against Newcastle on Saturday, while Eriksen has so far failed to transfer his goalscoring form on international duty to his club side.

Man United fans buzzing after captain Paul Pogba’s excellent performance

Manchester United’s stand-in captain Paul Pogba showed again why José Mourinho paid £88m for him after a Man of the Match performance against BSC Young Boys in their opening round Champions League match on Wednesday.

The Frenchman scored two goals in the first half, one from the penalty spot, and provided an assist for Anthony Martial in the 66th minute as United ran away with a comfortable 3-0 victory.

United fans are encouraged by their team’s recent run of form with their win on Wednesday night backed up by consecutive Premier League wins over Burnley and Watford.

Pogba has been the team’s regular captain this season in the matches that Antonio Valencia, who is the club-captain, didn’t feature. The 25-year-old has four goals in his last six games and the fans are also hoping the World Cup winner can continue that form.

United host Wolves on Saturday in what could be a tricky encounter for the Red Devils.

Here are some of the Twitter reactions by United fans…
