Crystal Palace fans praise James McArthur

Crystal Palace took a big step towards returning to the Premier League’s top half on Saturday.

The Eagles hosted Newcastle United at Selhurst Park, and won 1-0 thanks to a fantastic free-kick from Netherlands international Patrick van Aanholt. Their first victory in eight games means they are now nine points clear of the relegation zone in 13th place, and only three points away from getting back into the top ten.

Did he really play for us?! No Palace fan has managed to name all of these obscure Eagles signings….

Several of Roy Hodgson’s men put in performances that were worth celebrating, and James McArthur is one of his players who stood out – at least according to the supporters. Many were over the moon with the showing he put in, and they took to Twitter to share their delight.

It was surprising that so many fans thought he had a fantastic day at the office – he was dribbled past five times and gave away three fouls. Clearly, stats don’t tell the whole story.

Others, meanwhile, were quick to point out how underrated he is.

The fans obviously think he is deserving of far more praise than he currently gets. But if he plays like this on a regular basis, supporters will likely be quick to share their adulation far more often.

Elsewhere, Crystal Palace fans react to Real Madrid scouting this outcast.

Sheffield Wednesday’s Barry Bannan had another awful display

In what was a day to forget for Sheffield Wednesday, Barry Bannan in particular will be someone who will be keen to move on as quickly as possible.

The Scotland international has been in disappointing form over these past few weeks and months, providing just one goal contribution in his previous 11 games in the Championship.

And his display in the Owls’ 3-1 defeat at home to Derby on Saturday afternoon was certainly a shocking one.

Watch Sheffield Wednesday Videos With StreamFootball.tv Below

As per Sofascore, his 6.3 match rating was only better than goalkeeper Cameron Dawson in terms of Wednesday players who completed the full 90 minutes. And when you look at some of the numbers behind his performance, it is easy to see why.

The 30-year-old lost all seven of the duels that he was involved in, had no shots or dribbles whatsoever, made no tackles, and failed to deliver a single accurate cross from the whopping seven that he attempted.

Idiots Abroad: Do you know where these famous Brits are playing now?

It simply wasn’t his day at the office, and it was yet another case of him badly letting Garry Monk down. This after all, is a veteran midfielder who has proven he can be an instrumental figure for the side this season – he has seven assists in 34 games in the Championship.

But his displays in recent weeks have not been up to scratch, and with the Owls potentially trying to make a late push for the play-off places in this topsy-turvy campaign, they really cannot afford to have one of their main players be so under par.

Monk may have to have some stern words with the central midfielder in order to light a fire under him for the rest of this season.

Meanwhile, Sheffield Wednesday must tread carefully with this ace.

Steve Parish on verge of making huge Palace mistake

It has not been the worst season for Crystal Palace. They are currently 12th in the table on 36 points, nine clear of the relegation zone.

They should be safe for another year, despite spending very little once again this season. That, clearly, has compelled Steve Parish to try to get 72-year-old Roy Hodgson to sign a new one-year-extension – a recent report from The Evening Standard says that talks are set to re-open this week.

Whether Hodgson is the right man for Palace right now, though, is a different question. Last month, another report from the Standard said that it was the assurance that funds would be available that had convinced the former England boss to consider staying on for another 12 months – it would be a mistake to put the club’s future in his hands.

Right now, Crystal Palace have the oldest squad in the Premier League – they have an average age of 29.1. Clearly, they are in need of an overhaul, and the sooner the better.

Whilst the likes of Gary Cahil, James Tomkins and Scott Dann have contributed to the Eagles conceding just 32 goals in the top flight this term, for example, they are all at least 30 and approaching the end of their careers, with others such as Wilfried Zaha continually linked with a move away.

Across this season and last, they have spent just £17.11m. Given the financial health of the Premier League, you would expect there to be plenty of funds available, but Palace are not in a situation to be spending heavily every season – clearly, their model isn’t set up like that.

Calling all Eagles fans: Can you get 90% on this quickfire Palace quiz?

Therefore, this summer could be a turning point for the club – so why give Hodgson the responsibility of overseeing it? Yes, he has done well with the limited resources made available to him, keeping the side in the top flight in the last three seasons, but he is over 70 and you would expect this potential deal to be his last in football.

He is far from a long-term option, yet this recruitment drive will hopefully set Palace up for the next few years at least.

Instead of giving Hodgson a new deal, Parish should look to bring in a fresh face and give whoever it is the funds to mould his squad. Otherwise, when a new manager is inevitably appointed, he will have to make do with his predecessor’s squad. Given Palace’s frugal track record, there will be few funds available to change things.

Meanwhile, Palace are monitoring this Premier League winger’s situation.

Everton to look for the next Ross Barkley this summer, says journalist

Everton boss Carlo Ancelotti will attempt to find the next Ross Barkley this summer, according to The Athletic journalist Patrick Boyland via The Gwlad Tidings podcast (March 6th, 25:10).

What’s he said?

Ancelotti said earlier this week that the midfield “is an area where we need more energy”, suggesting that their transfer plans this summer will centre on the position.

And Boyland feels that a similar player to Barkley is needed.

The Chelsea playmaker left the Toffees in January of 2018 but he has endured an inconsistent time at Stamford Bridge, scoring just eight goals and providing eight assists in 71 games.

However, he was a game-changing force against Liverpool in the FA Cup in midweek, scoring against the Toffees’ Merseyside rivals in a 2-0 win, and Boyland feels that the dynamism he can show at his best is currently missing for Everton.

He said: “This week Carlo Ancelotti said Everton still lack energy and drive in the middle of the park.

“And you look at Ross Barkley when he’s on-song, when he’s playing like he did against Liverpool, that’s what they could do with from the centre of midfield at times.

“Just on a consistent basis. Just reading into that, that’s something Ancelotti feels is still missing from Ross Barkley’s days.

“They’ve brought in Sigurdsson who’s a very different player, maybe they’ve not replaced that within the Everton squad. Now they will look for something similar, not the same, in the summer.”

Call yourself an Everton expert? How much did each of these January signings cost?

Driving runs

Everton need a player who can drive at the opposition and carry the ball properly.

While they paired Tom Davies and Andre Gomes together against Manchester United, neither man offers the dynamic, attacking qualities that Barkley possesses; Davies is more of a terrier in midfield, while Gomes is a metronome.

Bringing in a player who can collect possession from deep and progress the ball, either with vertical passing, or with driving runs through the centre, has to become a priority.

At this stage, Everton are sorely lacking that kind of presence in the centre of the pitch.

Ancelotti is right to have identified the problem, now he needs to fix it.

The problem is, there aren’t many players of the profile of Barkley about, unless he can potentially convince the England international to make a dramatic return to Goodison Park…

Meanwhile, Ancelotti needs to finally unleash this man!

Aston Villa boss Dean Smith’s future discussed by The Athletic

The Athletic’s Aston Villa correspondent Gregg Evans has claimed that Dean Smith must pick up a result against Chelsea or risk the sack, per the 1874 podcast (March 12th, 12:00).

What’s he said?

The Villans are currently marooned in the bottom three and lie 19th in the Premier League table, two points away from safety.

They lost to Leicester City on Monday, going down 4-0, their fourth successive league defeat, following beatings by AFC Bournemouth, Tottenham Hotspur, and Southampton. They also lost the Carabao Cup final to Manchester City.

And Evans has claimed that Smith is nearing the sack ahead of a tough run of fixtures; Villa face Chelsea on Saturday before games against Wolves, Liverpool, and Manchester United.

He said: “You know we’ve not got Dean Smith, ahead of the Chelsea game with potentially one game to save his job. It’s my understanding that he needs a result really.

“I mean we’re at a stage now where it will be six defeats on the bounce if they lose to Chelsea, and there’s a 20-day period without a game.

“Look, I want Dean Smith to stay and I believe he can still turn this around.

“But I just think if they lose on Saturday and with that 20-day gap, I think if the owners want to get rid of him that will be the point they’ll do it.”

Baptism by fire

If they do take the step that Evans is talking about, Villa’s prospective new manager could well be given a baptism by fire.

They face three teams in the top eight in the coming weeks and their remaining fixtures are against Crystal Palace, Everton, Arsenal, and West Ham United.

It is a remarkably tough task for any manager to guide a team to survival with such a fixture list and one has to feel that Smith is surely the best placed man to guide his side through.

>Red Herring or Real Hero: Only hardcore Villa fans will get all of them right….

He knows the squad inside out and he won’t need to get to know the players or potentially formulate a completely new tactic.

Results haven’t been great, of course, but changing the manager at this point would potentially cause more issues than it would solve.

Owners Nassef Sawiris and Wes Edens would do well to remember that.

Meanwhile, Villa fans have drooled over this star!

Luis Alberto forces Liverpool to regret £4.3m departure

What ever happened to Luis Alberto after he left Liverpool for a fee of just £4.3m in August 2016?

The Spanish playmaker arrived at Anfield with plenty of promise for the future, but his career in England didn’t go according to plan.

Almost four years on from his departure, and with the current hiatus of Premier League football in mind, it’s an appropriate time to reflect on how his career has progressed in recent years.

It’s certainly been eventful, and his progress might just leave Jurgen Klopp with more than just a tinge of regret over the decision.

Time at Liverpool

Following his £6.8m move from Sevilla in 2013, Brendan Rodgers offered a promising verdict on Alberto’s future at the club, per BBC Sport.

“He has the correct footballing profile and mentality to be a Liverpool player.

“I look forward to working with him to develop his talent.”

Whatever Rodgers envisaged failed to come to fruition. The youngster started just two games under the Northern Irishman’s tutelage and made a further ten appearances in domestic competitions.

His only highlight worth noting arrived in the shape of an 11 minute cameo at White Hart Lane back in 2013 as Liverpool smashed Spurs 5-0 on their own turf. Alberto assisted Luis Suarez for the visitors’ fourth goal of the game and that turned out to be his solitary goal contribution in the famous red shirt.

Serie A outfit Lazio eventually came calling for his signature in August 2016, offering him a route out of Merseyside and a new environment in which to harness his potential.

Liverpool cut their losses and duly accepted the £4.3m offer.

 Where is he now?

Alberto certainly didn’t settle overnight in Italy but he’s slowly established himself as a vital player at his new club.

He played just 361 minutes of Serie A football during his debut season, scoring once and assisting twice in the process to lay the foundations for what proved to be a breakthrough second season.

In the 2017/18 campaign, goal contributions arrived at scale: eleven goals and 13 assists from 34 league games underlined his ability to be a deadly playmaker in one of Europe’s elite divisions.

And in the current campaign he has already racked up 13 assists from 25 league appearances.

According to Italian media outlet Il Messaggero (via Sport Witness), Lazio are hoping to include a release clause of €100m (£91.1m) in his new contract, with Liverpool’s 30% sell on clause forcing the issue somewhat.

Meanwhile, Alberto’s Transfermarkt valuation soared to £49.5m on March 3rd, which places him in the top 10 most highly rated attacking midfielders in world football.

The only solace for Liverpool is that they will receive 30% of any fee Lazio receive for his services, but otherwise his progress suggests the club may have been too hasty with their decision to sell him in 2016.

Spurs should complete move for Youcef Atal

According to Bild, Tottenham boss Jose Mourinho is targeting Youcef Atal this summer.

What’s the word?

Despite the uncertainty surrounding football at the moment and when the league season will restart, it appears Premier League sides are already drawing up plans for the upcoming transfer window.

And according to German publication Bild, Spurs have got a wish-list of players who they are targeting, and Nice right-back Atal is one of the names on it.

The report adds that the likes of Marcel Sabitzer, Jamal Lewis, Eder Militao and Geoffrey Kondogbia also feature on the short-list of summer targets.

Ending Aurier’s misery

Since Serge Aurier made the switch to the Premier League to join Tottenham, his career in north London has just been characterised by high-profile mistakes and howlers.

His constant giving away of penalties means that even whilst he may enjoy a run of games where he does the good offensively, you just cannot rely on him to keep his head in a defensive sense.

That inconsistency will no doubt leave Jose Mourinho tearing his hair out, whose career has been characterised by teams like Inter and Chelsea who have been dominant defensively.

Whilst Youcef Atal can certainly provide an attacking punch, he once scored a hat-trick for Nice against Guingamp, he is also solid going back towards his own goal. As per Whoscored, he is averaging an impressive 1.8 tackles and 1.8 interceptions per game in Ligue 1 this season, and that consistency is exactly what Spurs could do with. It’s no surprise that his teammate at Algeria, Riyad Mahrez, said the 23-year-old has a “huge future” in football.

Someone like Aurier will always give opposition teams a chance that he could do something reckless in a game. The £22.5m-rated Atal just represents a far safer option.

Meanwhile, Spurs would pull off a major coup if they signed this Serie A warrior.

Spurs fans react to Van Dijk’s comments on Heung-min Son

Ever since he arrived from Bundesliga side Bayer Leverkusen, Heung-min Son has been nothing short of a revelation at Tottenham.

The South Korea international has been a consistently reliable performer for the Lilywhites, both for Mauricio Pochettino and current manager Jose Mourinho.

All in all, as per Transfermarkt, the forward has scored a very impressive 83 goals and 44 assists in just 220 games across all competitions for the club.

Spot the fact from the fib: Are these Premier League records true or false?

World Class score: 95% | Expert score: 80% | Veteran score: 65% | Intermediate score: 45% | Amateur score: 30% | Try Again: 5%

And it appears players from rival clubs have also recognised his talents. Liverpool star and last year’s Ballon d’Or contender Virgil van Dijk waxed lyrical about Son when naming his dream five-a-side team.

He said (as quoted by Football.London): “He’s quick, he’s strong, he goes out there to make life hell on the pitch for a defender and his finishing – right foot, left foot – is just outstanding so I think I would pick him.”

After hearing the £90m-rated Van Dijk’s comments, Spurs fans took to Twitter to voice their thoughts on the matter.

A couple of Spurs supporters touted a potential switch from Merseyside to north London for Van Dijk.

A couple of fans jokingly referenced how this would be something to put in the trophy cabinet in north London.

The fact Van Dijk has spoke glowingly of Son’s abilities and that he is a nightmare to defend against is surely music to the ears of anyone connected to Spurs.

Harry Kane may be the north London side’s talisman, but Son isn’t too far behind.

Meanwhile, Spurs fans react to Victor Wanyama’s admission.

Manchester United’s brilliant defensive duo of Ferdinand and Vidic

In terms of central defensive partnerships, there has to be a balance, a yin and yang that works together in perfect harmony to ensure they are rarely breached by their opponents.

A ball-player and a covering hard man usually do the trick, and few partnerships have ever been quite so balanced as Manchester United’s noughties pairing of Nemanja Vidic and Rio Ferdinand.

Bought for a British record transfer fee, Ferdinand arrived at Manchester United with a growing reputation, but it was his ability on the ball that stood out the most. Sure, he was big and strong, his positional play was good, and potentially could have been a threat from corners, too – though didn’t score a lot of goals. But perhaps the most impressive thing about Ferdinand was that, for an English center-back, he wasn’t afraid of having possession of the ball.

Indeed, when United bought Ferdinand in 2002, their greatest success had come just three years earlier, when Alex Ferguson’s side won the treble. Jaap Stam and Ronny Johnsen was the pairing who took over from Gary Pallister and Steve Bruce, who had dominated the Premier League in the 1990s, but who had been unable to conquer Europe. It seemed as though the foreign pairing brought an extra dimension to United’s play by allowing the team to build from the back.

It was a similar partnership for what was to come later: Johnsen was skilled enough in possession to play as a defensive midfielder for United on occasion, whilst Stam is today remembered as one of the hardest centre-backs in footballing history – and not just in England.

Isolation Busters: The only quiz you need to cure your boredem

World Class score: 95% | Expert score: 80% | Veteran score: 65% | Intermediate score: 45% | Amateur score: 30% | Try Again: 5%

In 2006, United signed Vidic, and the partnership with Ferdinand seemed to continue the lineage that Stam and Johnsen set in 1999. Between them, the Serbian and the Englishman five Premier League titles, three League Cups and were also successful in Europe, winning one Champions League title, but losing twice in the final to a freakish Barcelona side managed by Pep Guardiola. In that sense, they were just unlucky to be playing at the same time as one of the best club sides in history.

In terms of trophies, though, it does stand out strangely that United did not manage to win an FA Cup in the years Ferdinand and Vidic played at centre-back. Neither had an FA Cup medal – Vidic because he didn’t play for a victorious United side, and Ferdinand as his ban for missing a drugs test in 2003 came during the only season when United won the cup whilst the former England man was still on the books. It’s the odd stat which stands out, because whilst some would argue that they were the best partnership in English football history, they never won the oldest competition in the world.

Perhaps, though, that just shows how Alex Ferguson’s side in the noughties had bigger fish to fry. With Ferdinand and Vidic, just like with Stam and Johnsen before them, the Champions League was not out of reach for the Old Trafford side. That they could compete with the glamorous teams around the continent not just for heart and industry, but for skill, too.

And for English football’s transition from an unfashionable league in the late 1980s and early 90s, to the powerhouse of the Premier League with teams capable of winning continental competitions, the ability to marry a silky centre-back in Ferdinand with one who could do the dirty work, like Vidic, was vital to the cause.

Tottenham: Alasdair Gold provides update on Spurs interest in Ruben Dias

Football.London journalist Alasdair Gold has provided an update on Tottenham’s rumoured interest in Benfica ace Ruben Dias.

Reports in recent weeks have claimed that the Lilywhites are targeting the Portuguese centre-back ahead of a potential move this summer, but with the current uncertainty surrounding football at the moment, Gold admitted that the prospect of him actually joining may be an unlikely scenario.

When answering a question about whether Spurs could offer Juan Foyth and money for Dias in a Q&A on Football.London, Gold replied: “Ruben Dias is a player that Mourinho likes and he’s clearly one of Europe’s highly-rated young defenders. Personally I feel Juan Foyth has plenty of potential and hasn’t really had much of a chance to get a run of games.

If he doesn’t get regular game time then he’s going to want to leave but how much a fee for him would take off the price for Dias is another thing as is whether Foyth would want to go to Benfica. You’re probably looking at a player similar in price to Davinson Sanchez in Dias, around the £40m mark, a price that could be too much in the current financial climate.

“If Foyth and Vertonghen both move on, Tottenham will look at Dias but it has to be an achievable price.”

Just as will every other side in the Premier League will have to endure, Spurs will have to tighten the reins on any planned transfer sprees this summer.

What usually would have been an affordable price in last year’s market will certainly not be the case this time around, and the Lilywhites will have to be resourceful with the way they go about spending the money they do have.

Mourinho will no doubt be keen on reinforcing the centre of defence ahead of next season, particularly with Jan Vertonghen’s contract situation hanging over their heads. Dias could come in and command a starting berth, but whether Spurs are prepared to commit a large portion of their budget on one player when they may need three of four remains to be seen.
