Celtic’s football operations should be a concern

It doesn’t take a lot to work out that proceedings in the Celtic boardroom have been rather unclear for the Bhoys and their supporters over the last 18 or so months.

As the Hoops lost their stronghold on Scottish football last term, supporters protested outside Parkhead against the ownership for their lack of ambition.

Neil Lennon was leading a sinking ship but the Northern Irishman had to take matters into his own hand and left of his own accord rather than being sacked by Dermot Desmond and Peter Lawwell.

The latter has since left, retiring from his role and following Nick Hammond and Lennon through the exit door.

His replacement, Dominic McKay, has already taken his leave which has left Michael Nicholson as their acting CEO.

What Celtic have struggled to do, however, is bring in some with plenty of football expertise. It looked over the summer as though the Bhoys would bring in a director of football but a move for Fergal Harkin fell flat.

Judging by how some of Celtic’s summer signings have turned out, this issue is now all too apparent.

Speaking in a Q&A with The Athletic, reporter Kieran Devlin shared his own worries when debating the acquisition of James McCarthy on a free transfer.

He said: “I believe the board’s thinking on McCarthy is that on paper he offered the experience and cultural affinity to replace the leadership/Celtic connection gap left by Brown’s farewell, even if it hasn’t panned out like that so far.”

Devlin continued: “But this is where having executives make crucial football operations decisions is a potential issue, rather than someone with expertise and experience in that role like a sporting director or head of recruitment, who can step in and say ‘is this a rational sporting decision’?”

This should be a hugely concerning statement for Celtic supporters to read. After all, the addition of McCarthy to the side has hardly been helpful.

The Irishman should have offered plenty of experience in the middle of the park but the fact of the matter is that he’s been poor. Supporters have torn him apart and although the likes of Kyogo Furuhashi and Jota have been successful signings, proceedings won’t improve in the long run until Celtic appoint a proper director who can lead their recruitment.

Unfortunately for the Parkhead faithful, it doesn’t appear as though that model of working behind the scenes is going to be forthcoming with few updates on the matter in the last few months.

Consider Harkin’s prominent work at Manchester City where he was described as a transfer, and this would have been an inspired appointment. Instead, they are left to rue their mistakes of a few months ago.

Sunderland must avoid Josh Stones blunder

Sunderland boss Alex Neil picked up another win in the third tier over the weekend as his side beat Gillingham 1-0 at the Stadium of Light.

Nathan Broadhead’s diving header in the last minute sealed the three points to keep the Black Cats in the race to land a play-off spot.

They are currently two points behind 5th-placed Sheffield Wednesday in the table as they attempt to land a top-six place between now and the end of the regular season.

If the Black Cats end up in the play-offs and Neil is able to guide them to the Championship this term, Kristjaan Speakman will be facing the daunting prospect of sorting out the club’s striking options heading into next season.

Ross Stewart has been linked with a move to Premier League side Norwich and Nathan Broadhead is set to return to Everton this summer. They have scored 28 goals between them in League One and losing both of them ahead of a campaign in the second tier would be a disaster, especially if they fail to bring in a player of the requisite quality to replace them.

One striker they have been credited with an interest in is 18-year-old Guiseley forward Josh Stones. The youngster has caught the eye this season with his goals at youth level and Sunderland are one of the clubs keen on a deal for him.

However, Football Insider recently reported that Wigan have agreed terms with the striker ahead of a summer switch to the DW Stadium. This means that, as it stands, Speakman is set to miss out on a deal for the teen as Wigan have swooped in ahead of them.

Stones has scored nine goals in his last five youth games for Guiseley, whilst he recently scored a hat-trick at youth level for England’s schoolboys team against Scotland. This means that he has found the back of the net 12 times in his last six matches in development football, which highlights his incredible potential as a player.

Therefore, missing out on a deal for him would be a big disaster for Speakman. Not only would it be to a League One rival, but it could also be at the same time they lose both Stewart and Broadhead – leaving Neil’s squad threadbare at the top end of the pitch.

The Stadium of Light supremo must do everything in his power to convince the 18-year-old phenomenon to turn Wigan down and sign a contract with Sunderland. His statistics at youth level suggest that he would be an excellent addition to the club’s ranks and they cannot allow their rivals to snap him up ahead of them.

Aston Villa struck gold on Tyrone Mings

The expectations of Aston Villa fans may not have been overly high when their club signed Tyrone Mings for a rather sizeable £20m back in the summer of 2019, however, the centre-back has gone on to prove he was well worth Johan Lange’s considerable gamble.

Indeed, having highly impressed over his 15 Championship appearances while on loan at Villa back in 2018/19, helping his side keep six clean sheets, it certainly appeared as if signing the defender was a smart move by the club, albeit with an inflated transfer fee – with the 28-year-old’s Transfermarkt valuation at the time of his switch to Villa Park being just £4.5m.

However, Mings has gone from strength to strength since joining Villa on a permanent basis, demonstrating he was well worth the fee the Premier League side paid AFC Bournemouth for his services.

Indeed, over his 33 Premier League appearances for the club in their 2019/20 campaign, the £67k-per-week defender played a key role in helping his side avoid relegation, helping his team keep six clean sheets, scoring two goals and registering two assists, in addition to making an average of 0.9 interceptions, 0.5 tackles, 5.7 clearances and winning 3.2 duels per match.

These returns saw the defender average a seasonal SofaScore match rating of 6.88, ranking him as Dean Smith’s joint fourth-best performer in the top flight of English football.

However, it was over the centre-back’s 36 Premier League fixtures last season in which he truly came into his own, scoring two goals, providing two assists and helping his side keep a whopping 14 clean sheets, as well as making an average of 1.1 interceptions, 0.9 tackles, 4.7 clearances and winning 4.1 duels per league game.

These metrics saw Mings earn a highly impressive average SofaScore match rating of 6.95, ranking him as Villa’s joint ninth-best player in the top flight, and earning the defender a call up to Gareth Southgate’s Euro 2020 squad.

As such, considering these impressive displays, as well as the fact the England international is now valued at £27m by Transfermarkt, it would indeed appear as if Lange struck gold when signing Mings back in 2019.

Norris says Harry Winks would have been Leeds United success

Former Leeds United player David Norris believes that Harry Winks would have been a success at Elland Road.

Winks has featured for Tottenham on three occasions this season so far, playing both of Spurs’ UEFA Europa Conference League Qualifying legs against Pacos de Ferreira and also making a substitute appearance in the Premier League against Wolves.

During his time at Spurs Winks has featured 176 times and provides versatility to his game as he has played defensive midfield, central midfield, attacking midfield and out wide off both flanks.

Whilst there has been speculation about his future this summer, The Athletic’s Phil Hay revealed that Leeds rejected the opportunity to bring Harry Winks to Elland Road on loan, but Norris believes that the Tottenham midfielder would have been a success with the Whites.

He said: “I think so yeah, he’s a quality player and we’ve said before that Leeds need a little bit more back-up in that area and with what he’s done at Spurs I would have thought that would have been a good fit, a good move.”

Leeds head into the international break with two points from a possible nine after losing on the opening day of the season to Manchester United, but they have responded with back-to-back draws against Everton and Burnley.

The Whites will be looking to continue on their unbeaten run when club football returns and try to replicate last season’s top-ten finish this campaign.

Opinion: Tottenham should not move for Bale if it means losing Eriksen

[ad_pod ]

Tottenham fans will absolutely love the latest transfer rumour out of Spain, as reports claim Gareth Bale could be open to a return to north London.

What’s the story?

According to Marca, via Sport Witness, Real Madrid are once again considering selling Bale.

The Welsh wing wizard was the source of plenty of speculation after last season’s Champions League final, but of course it was Cristiano Ronaldo who departed, with Bale supposedly set to take the helm in Madrid.

That hasn’t happened though, and the report from Marca claims Bale “doesn’t rule out” a return to Spurs, while also including the Lilywhites as one of the interested parties.

According to the report, Bale has been overshadowed by Karim Benzema and Brazilian youngster Vinicius, and he could be used as part of a swap deal to land Christian Eriksen.

Is he worth losing Eriksen?

Real Madrid paid around £90m for Bale back in 2013, and that was before the transfer market exploded due to players like Paul Pogba and Neymar, so they will be looking for a hefty fee even as the Welshman approaches his 30th birthday.

That said, it is likely that the Lilywhites would have to sacrifice Eriksen to land Bale just like Marca claims, with the Danish international yet to show any signs of penning a new deal at the club.

Eriksen will be out of contract in the summer of 2020, but Daniel Levy and Mauricio Pochettino should be doing everything in their power to stop him from leaving, as the fan favourite playmaker is far younger and less injury-prone than Bale.

Bale may be a world-renowned superstar, but he has suffered countless muscle injuries in his five-and-a-half years in Madrid, and Eriksen is a more proven fit in Pochettino’s system.

Eriksen must be the club’s priority, but all things considered Bale isn’t exactly a bad contingency plan.

Leeds trio struggle despite win at Norwich

Leeds United may have won 2-1 at Norwich City on Sunday, but Liam Cooper, Daniel James and Jack Harrison all struggled at Carrow Road.

The Whites made the trip to face the Canaries in what was a vital Premier League clash at the bottom-end of the table.

After a drab opening 45 minutes, the game sprung into life after the interval, with Raphinha, Andrew Omobamidele and Rodrigo all scoring in the space of five minutes.

Leeds hung on in the end, sealing a massive three points in the process and taking them out of the relegation zone.

However, not everyone in the visitors’ line-up had a hugely impressive afternoon. As per SofaScore ratings, these were the Whites’ three worst players of those who featured for 45 minutes or more.

Liam Cooper – 6.6

Cooper started at the heart of the defence but he was never quite at his dominant best at Carrow Road.

The 30-year-old lost five of his 11 duels against Norwich, also losing possession 16 times overall, while his 61% passing accuracy rate was the lowest of any outfield player to feature for Bielsa’s side in Norfolk.

Dan James – 6.6

James is still waiting for his Leeds career to fully take off and he went another Premier League game without registering a goal or an assist. He now has no goals in his first seven top-flight appearances for the Whites.

Not only that, but the Welshman only won four out of his 12 duels and was dribbled past twice, along with losing the ball five times. He completed only 13 passes this afternoon, the fewest of anyone in Bielsa’s starting line-up.

Jack Harrison – 6.5

Harrison’s season is yet to kick into gear, having been Leeds’ joint-second top goalscorer in the 2020/21 Premier League campaign.

The winger was arguably his side’s poorest player on the day against Norwich, picking up a yellow card and completing no accurate crosses. The 24-year-old also gave the ball away 11 times and came off second best in 10 of his 13 duels.

Vlasic impresses in West Ham cup win

West Ham United progressed to the fourth round of the FA Cup on Sunday afternoon as they beat fellow Premier League outfit Leeds United 2-0 at the London Stadium.

Manuel Lanzini gave the Hammers, who host the Yorkshire club again next Sunday, the lead just after the half-an-hour mark before Jarrod Bowen secured the East London club’s place in the next round in added time.

However, despite Lanzini and Bowen being the players on the score sheet, another attacking midfielder impressed for David Moyes’ side: Nikola Vlasic.

According to SofaScore, the Croatian enjoyed a 91% passing accuracy against Marcelo Bielsa’s side as well as making three key passes.

Furthermore, the 24-year-old completed 80% of his dribbles and only lost possession on seven occasions whilst making 56 touches.

The attacking midfielder has endured mixed fortunes since returning to the Premier League from CSKA Moscow, having been at Everton previously.

Vlasic has only managed nine Premier League appearances this term, starting two games in the top-flight.

However, the Croatian has been of great use in other competitions, with the Hammers new to balancing four competitions, making a combined nine appearances in the Europa League, EFL Cup and FA Cup.

Moreover, the attacking midfielder is starting to find form in East London, scoring his first goal for the Hammers against Watford at the end of December as well as impressing in West Ham’s cup success over the Whites.

With fellow attacking midfielder Said Benrahma set to be absent over the coming weeks whilst with his native Algeria side at the Africa Cup of Nations, Vlasic has the opportunity to impress Moyes and put together a run of games in the top-flight.

Prior to the Leeds game, the Scotsman said to West Ham’s official website: “Niksi [Vlasic] will have opportunities and we’re trying to break him in.

“He’s beginning to show some good signs so let’s hope he can step up when he gets the opportunity. I do see opportunities for him with Saïd away.”

Furthermore, the £25m signing was labelled as “versatile” upon him signing for West Ham in September by former Hammers assistant Nikola Jurcevic and could start to justify that transfer fee in the coming weeks.

Manchester United: Edinson Cavani still expected to leave

Fabrizio Romano has revealed that Manchester United forward Edinson Cavani is still expected to leave Old Trafford, despite the imminent appointment of Erik ten Hag.

The Lowdown: Cavani’s struggles

The Uruguayan has been limited to just six Premier League starts this term, missing plenty of action due to a number of injuries.

Cavani picked up his latest problem with Uruguay during the recent international break and missed the draw with Leicester and defeat to Everton due to a calf problem.

The 35-year-old is one of a number of United players who are out of contract at the end of June, and it looks as if he’ll be one of the first to leave in what could be a major summer shake-up under Ten Hag.

The Latest: Romano’s post

Romano took to Twitter on Thursday morning to provide an update on Cavani.

He revealed that the ‘imminent appointment’ of Ten Hag won’t change Cavani’s mind when it comes to his future and he is ‘still expected to leave on a free transfer’ over the coming months, name-checking La Liga as a possible destination for the forward.

The Verdict: Blow

Although Cavani has missed the majority of the season due to various issues, he has shown his quality in England. He netted 17 goals during his first year as a United player, and should he depart, Ten Hag will be left with just Cristiano Ronaldo as the only senior centre-forward.

Ronaldo’s future at Old Trafford is also thought to be in doubt, so persuading Cavani to stay could have been on Ten Hag’s agenda due to his lack of options.

However, it doesn’t look like he’ll remain in England, so a new centre-forward could be a top priority for the Red Devils and Ten Hag over the coming months.

Man City fans erupt over Haaland update

Flocking to Twitter, many Manchester City supporters have been left excited by an update on transfer target Erling Braut Haaland’s situation at Borussia Dortmund.

The Norway star has been the subject of intense interest from sporting director Txiki Begiristain and City since beyond the summer as their hunt continues for a world class striker.

City couldn’t find common ground with a stubborn Daniel Levy in the last transfer window over Harry Kane, which has seen manager Pep Guardiola’s side become linked to a host of other options in Dusan Vlahovic, Victor Osimhen, Kylian Mbappe and even Wolves forward Hwang Hee-chan.

Haaland, however remains very much in the mix as his €75 million (£63m) release clause comes into effect next summer.

While City remain linked with other forward men, including a surprise return for Kane in January, a recent report from The Times claims they are also set to hold talks with Haaland’s representative, Mino Raiola, over a potential summer move.

As Begiristain eyes a move for the scintillating 21-year-old, who’s racked up nine goals and four assists in six Bundesliga appearances already this season (Transfermarkt), it appears City may have now been handed a boost as an update emerges from Spain.

According to El Chiringuito TV journalist Josep Pedrerol, as transcribed and relayed by The Sun, La Liga giants Real Madrid have ‘ruled out’ the signing of Haaland as they believe he will ‘play in England next year’.

Man City fans excited…

As the Galacticos reportedly pull out, it’s safe to say there is cause for optimism among Citizens given one major European heavyweight’s absence from the race and their apparent belief he is set for a Premier League move.

Leeds: Whites keen on Fabio Carvalho

Leeds United have joined some huge teams in the race to sign forward Fabio Carvalho, according to The Sun.

The Lowdown: Carvalho profiled

Carvalho, who can play on either wing or in an attacking midfield role, is 19 years of age and has been with Fulham since the age of 12.

He’s made 23 senior appearances for the Championship high-flyers – 17 of which have come during the current campaign.

The teenager, labelled as ‘lively’ by former manager Scott Parker, has scored seven times and registered two assists in 2021/22.

Carvalho was linked with Barcelona, Chelsea, Liverpool and Real Madrid just last month, and Leeds have now joined the race alongside their pursuit of RB Salzburg star Brenden Aaronson.

The Latest: Leeds interest

The Sun shared a story on Tuesday lunchtime, claiming Liverpool are ready to battle West Ham with a £5m swoop for Carvalho.

The report added that Leeds and FC Porto are also interested in the Fulham starlet, who is represented by super-agent Jorge Mendes.

The Verdict: Future star

Fulham’s academy director Huw Jennings said last month that Carvalho, who has immense running speed, wants to be ‘competing for the Ballon d’Or’ in the next few years.

It’s a bold statement but he’s clearly a confident young player who can play in a number of attacking roles and is wanted by some of Europe’s biggest clubs.

Leeds have reaped the rewards of bringing a highly-rated youngster to the club in Joe Gelhardt, but it seems as if they could face a tougher task in their pursuit of Carvalho due to the other sides involved. Could Gelhardt’s path into the first-team convince Carvalho to avoid those other clubs, where he may spend more time on the bench and in the youth set-up?

It could be one to watch, but at the minute, it appears as if Victor Orta’s sole focus is on bringing Aaronson to Elland Road.
