Report shares big Che Adams update

Southampton are willing to sell Che Adams this summer following links of a move to Leeds United.

The Lowdown: Leeds linked with Adams

The Whites appear to have their eye on the Saints attacker once again, with Victor Orta still on the hunt for a new forward before the September 1 deadline.

Recent rumours have suggested that Leeds are lining up a ‘shock move’ for the Scotland international, with Phil Hay believing that Adams may come onto the radar late in the transfer window if moves for other Elland Road targets fall away.

Leeds have made a first move by officially registering their interest in the 26-year-old last week, with Nottingham Forest also keen on the player’s services.

The Latest: Adams transfer update

The Athletic’s Jacob Tanswell shared an in-depth Southampton story on Monday following their 4-1 defeat to Tottenham over the weekend.

The journalist provided a big update on Adams, who was an unused substitute in north London, claiming that the Saints are willing to offload the forward in the final weeks of the transfer window.

The Verdict: Time for Orta to swoop

The two teams face each other this weekend at St Mary’s, but ahead of that match, the coming days could be the perfect chance for Leeds to get things in place over a move for Adams following this development.

The Whites would reportedly like to do a deal at £10m, a figure which could represent some smart business.

Adams has plenty of Premier League experience and could be the perfect third centre-forward alongside Patrick Bamford and Joe Gelhardt at Elland Road.

You’d like to think that the Scotland striker would get his fair share of game-time in Jesse Marsch’s narrow formation and wouldn’t hinder Gelhardt’s emergence in Yorkshire, so this could be one to monitor over the coming days or weeks.

Rangers target Ridvan Yilmaz

Glasgow Rangers and Giovanni van Bronckhorst are keen on bringing left-back Ridvan Yilmaz to Ibrox this summer, according to the Daily Mail.

The lowdown: Career so far

Born in Istanbul, Yilmaz has been an ever-present member of the international youth setup in Turkey from the Under 16 level before becoming a fully-fledged senior international.

The 21-year-old has come through the academy ranks at Besiktas and has gone on to make 62 first-team outings for the Super Lig side, directly contributing to 11 goals whilst playing a key role in a domestic Turkish treble in the process.

Previously targeted by Tottenham during the ongoing summer window, a fresh claim has emerged suggesting that Rangers could be set to make a move for the Turkish youngster…

The latest: Gers interested

As per the Daily Mail, the Glasgow giants are believed to be ‘exploring a potential move’ for Yilmaz.

It’s claimed that the six-cap starlet is the next target for the Ibrox outfit having completed the capture of defender Ben Davies from Liverpool.

The report states that Yilmaz – who was described as a ‘very smart’ operator by national team manager Stefan Kuntz – would ‘likely cost in excess of £4million’ despite entering the final 12 months of a contract with his boyhood club.

The verdict: Exciting times

As the ever-reliable Calvin Bassey prepares to complete a switch to Ajax, Van Bronckhorst is wise to explore the possibility of bringing in additional reinforcements for the backline.

Equally adept as a left-back and in central defence, the Teddy Bears’ boss is essentially losing two key options in one and as such, the signing of Davies cannot cover for the loss of the 22-year-old sensation alone.

Therefore, attempting to sign Yilmaz, who scored three times and provided four assists in 33 appearances across all competitions last season whilst operating as a left-back and left midfielder, would be a smart move from the Rangers hierarchy even were it to initially be as cover for Borna Barisic.

Overall, the talented Turkish youngster earned a 6.86 Sofascore rating last term, winning 3.7 duels, making 1.1 clearances and successfully completing 1.1 dribbles on average per top flight outing – impressively more completed dribbles than Gers loanee Amad Diallo managed in the Scottish Premiership – highlighting an attacking prowess to accompany defensive acumen.

Holding a market value of £5.85million (Transfermarkt), signing Yilmaz for anything close to the suggested £4million would be a sensational piece of business.

West Ham: Journalist makes Broja claim

Journalist Paul Brown has shed some light on the pursuit of Chelsea striker Armando Broja from West Ham United this summer.

The lowdown: Striker needed

Ever since the Hammers sold Sebastien Haller to Ajax in January 2021 for £20.25million (BBC), Michail Antonio has ploughed a lonely furrow as the only senior recognised frontman in the London Stadium ranks.

Occasions supported by Andriy Yarmolenko and an out-of-natural position Jarrod Bowen, for the most part, it’s been left to the talismanic 32-year-old to lead the line for David Moyes’ side whenever available.

Despite early reports suggesting that a centre-forward would be a top priority for David Moyes and Rob Newman, no new arrival has yet been forthcoming, a situation one informed onlooker has claimed could change in the future…

The latest: ‘Waiting for him’

Speaking to Give Me Sport, Daily Star journalist Brown has stated that the Irons may need to wait to land their man, but provided some majorly good news in that he believes the Blues see the striker as a ‘sellable asset’.

He said: “The [Chelsea] owners might think, ‘Look, we’ve got a sellable asset here that can bring some money back in and help us to fund some of these transfers that we want.’ So I have a feeling Broja might go towards the end of the window, but that’ll mean West Ham waiting for him.”

The verdict: Worth the wait

Although Moyes would likely rather have the players in situ as early as possible, for a signing of the quality of Broja there can afford to be made an exception.

Last season the 14-cap Albania star – who was recently described as a ‘complete forward’ by football talent scout Jacek Kulig – scored nine times and provided one assist in 38 appearances across all competitions for Southampton, earning a 6.69 Sofascore whilst showcasing an eye-catching combative side by winning 5.0 duels on average per game in the league.

Predominantly operating as an archetypical centre-forward, the 6 foot 1 frontman has also played on either wing previously and would therefore offer versatility to the Hammers’ ranks as well as a genuine much-needed understudy to the sole frontline option.

Albeit far from the finished article, adding Broja to the West Ham ranks for Moyes to work with, develop alongside and dovetail with Antonio makes an abundance of sense given the similarities in terms of playing style.

Spurs: Paratici given Ake green light

Tottenham Hotspur are interested in a deal to bring Nathan Ake to north London in the summer transfer window.

What’s the talk?

That’s according to a report by 90min, who claim that Fabio Paratici now is keeping a very close eye on the situation of the Manchester City centre-back ahead of a potential move in the coming weeks.

The report goes on to state that the likes of Aston Villa, Bournemouth, Chelsea, Newcastle United and West Ham United are also interested in a deal for the 27-year-old, whom Pep Guardiola’s side have informed is free to leave the club this summer – as long as they are to receive an offer in the region of £50m for his services.

“Perfect” for Conte

With the signing of a left-footed centre-back reported to be one of Antonio Conte’s primary targets in the summer transfer window, it is not difficult to understand why Paratici would be interested in a deal to bring the Netherlands international to the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium this summer.

While it is true that, following his £41m move to The Etihad back in the summer of 2020, Ake has somewhat struggled to hold down a starting spot in Guardiola’s XI – being selected from the off just 30 times for the Citizens – the Dutchman still managed to impress in 2021/22.

[snack-amp-story url= “https://www.footballfancast.com/web-stories/read-the-latest-spurs-news-transfer-rumours-gossip-much-more” title= “Read the latest Spurs news, transfer rumours and more!”]

Indeed, over his 14 Premier League appearances last season, the £26m-rated talent helped his side keep five clean sheets, as well as making an average of 0.6 interceptions, 1.1 tackles, 1.5 clearances and winning 3.9 duels – at a success rate of 66% – per game.

The £100k-per-week defender – who can also operate at left-back – also chipped in for City going forwards, scoring two goals and creating one big chance for his teammates, in addition to completing an average of 55.1 passes, 1.0 long ball and taking 0.4 shots per fixture.

These returns saw the player who Nizaar Kinsella claimed looks “perfect as a left centre-back” and Bill DiFilippo dubbed “unreal” average an extremely impressive SofaScore match rating of 7.08, ranking him as Guardiola’s 14th-best performer in the top flight last time out.

Furthermore, according to FBref data, Ake also ranks in the top 2% of centre-backs in Europe’s big five leagues for passes attempted per 90, as well as the top 7% for passes completed, the top 4% for progressive carries and the top 13% for aerial duels won over the last 365 days.

As such, it would very much appear as if the Dutchman would tick almost every box Conte is looking for in a left-footed centre-back this summer, leading us to believe that Paratici must do everything in his power to get a deal over the line for the 27-year-old ahead of the upcoming Premier League campaign.

Newcastle transfer news on Nunez

Journalist Jacque Talbot has now revealed some big Newcastle United transfer news on Darwin Nunez.

The Lowdown: Nunez a target

Talbot reported earlier this week of the St. James’ Park outfit’s ‘interest’ in signing Nunez this summer, which follows on from reports in May that the Toon Army were even preparing an offer for the Uruguay starlet.

However, Tottenham Hotspur, Liverpool, West Ham United, Manchester United, Arsenal and Chelsea are also all thought to be eyeing up a move for the Benfica striker.

The Latest: No deal

Taking to Twitter, Talbot has now given an update on the situation, revealing that Liverpool is Nunez’s ‘first choice’.

“My understanding from speaking to those in Portugal is that Darwin Nunez has now prioritised Liverpool as a first choice. Been reported in the UK that the Merseyside club are readying a bid.”

More importantly for Newcastle fans, he also revealed that Man Utd would be Nunez’s second choice, and has heard that he will definitely not be moving to the Magpies:

“However, if that move does not come through, it looks like the player wants Man United. Mentioned before about Newcastle but I hear that’s just not going to happen.”

The Verdict: Big blow

It would certainly be a big blow for the North East club if they were to miss out on signing Nunez this summer, especially if he ends up joining a fellow rival in the Premier League.

Hailed as a ‘sensational talent’ by Fox Sports journalist James Dodd, the 22-year-old scored no fewer than 34 goals and made a further four assists in 41 games over all competitions last season (Transfermarkt), and so has earned himself a big move away from Portugal.

However, he is thought to have a whopping £125m release clause, so perhaps the Tynesiders will want to avoid paying inflated prices in this window, given it is their first summer in which selling teams know they can push the price up.

West Ham make "initial enquiries" into Lingard

West Ham United are reportedly hoping to secure a reunion with Jesse Lingard this summer, with the player destined to leave Manchester United in the coming months.

What’s the word?

As per Sky Sports News presenter Tom White, “West Ham have made initial enquiries” into bringing the versatile midfielder back to the London Stadium in the upcoming transfer window, with the 29-year-old set to be available on a free once his existing deal expires in June.

Having spent the second half of the 2020/21 season on loan in east London, the Red Devils academy graduate had been linked with a £25m permanent move to the Hammers last summer. Instead, he ultimately spent the entire campaign back at Old Trafford, where he was restricted to a bit-part role.

[snack-amp-story url= “https://www.footballfancast.com/web-stories/read-this-weeks-latest-west-ham-news-transfer-rumours-gossip-and-more” title= “Read the latest West Ham news!”]

A loan move to Newcastle United also fell through in January towards the end of the month, with a host of clubs now set to reinvigorate their interest to try and capture the 32-cap international for nothing.

Supporters will be delighted

That news will no doubt be music to the ears of Irons supporters and David Moyes, with the £18m-rated maestro having been a revelation during his previous stint at the club, rejuvenating his career after falling out of favour under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer at Old Trafford.

In a stunning six-month spell at the London Stadium, Lingard netted nine goals and registered five assists in just 16 appearances for Moyes’ team, helping the club to secure Europa League qualification after narrowly missing out on the top four.

That blistering form saw the Warrington native with 165 Premier League appearances return to the England setup under Gareth Southgate, albeit that he was omitted from the Euro 2020 squad, with it expected that he would be able to kick on in the 2021/22 campaign.

However, his decision to remain at the Theatre of Dreams rather than push for an exit last summer has not gone to plan, as the £80k-per-week playmaker has started just two league games all season, having failed to earn a starting berth despite some notable cameos in the early months of the campaign.

One such outing saw the 29-year-old come off the bench to haunt the Irons, netting a stunning curled effort late on to secure a 2-1 victory for the Red Devils last September.

That strike was simply a marker of his undoubted quality, and it was bizarre to see him not being afforded a chance to prove his worth at Man United over the last few months, despite their dismal form.

It is easy to forget that this is a player who has scored at a World Cup and netted in three Wembley triumphs for his current club, with the Red Devils potentially more to blame for his current woes than he is himself.

Should GSB be able to secure a deal this summer, it would no doubt represent a major coup, with West Ham supporters set to be hoping that he can recapture the stunning performances that he showed at the London Stadium last year.

Newcastle: Targett was "on point again"

Eddie Howe’s Newcastle United side fell to a disappointing defeat on Saturday afternoon, with Liverpool running out 1-0 winners at St James’ Park.

The Magpies had some of their own chances, but if it were not for Martin Dubravka’s highly impressive display between the sticks, the scoreline may well have made much worse reading, with the 33-year-old making a whopping nine saves throughout the match.

However, despite the result, it was not only the Slovakia international who turned in an impressive display for Newcastle against the Reds, with Matt Targett being “on point again” – in the words of Jamie Carragher – against Jurgen Klopp’s side.

Targett impressed for Newcastle

Indeed, over his 90 minutes on the pitch, the 26-year-old was imperious in a defensive capacity, making three clearances, one interception and six tackles, blocking one shot and winning eight of his 12 duels – a success rate of 67%.

While the £35k-per-week talent did not offer much going forwards – a story which was consistent throughout the majority of the Magpies side – he still had 62 touches of the ball (the second-most for Newcastle) while also completing 21 passes and two long balls.

These returns saw the £15.3m-rated left-back earn an impressive SofaScore match rating of 7.2, ranking him as Howe’s joint second-best performer on the day behind Dubravka. The Chronicle’s Lee Ryder also awarded the defender an eight in his own player ratings, in addition to stating: “A solid display with half a dozen successful tackles. Did well.”

Indeed, from this performance, it is easy to see why the 44-year-old Magpies boss is reportedly eager to make Targett’s temporary stay at St James’ Park a permanent one this summer, as the former England under-21 international has already proven himself to be a key part of Howe’s first-team squad since his January arrival.

Virat Kohli brings back the freshness in his batting

During his half-century in the second T20I against West Indies, Kohli was imperious and cautious as the situation demanded

Jaffer: Kohli responded well to the challenge

It’s the second over of the innings. The upper tier of the BC Roy Club House roars in unison as the ball hangs high in the air. Kyle Mayers is running back to gobble up a top-edge. At the striker’s end, Ishan Kishan shrieks in frustration. The decibels soar and a collective echo resonates around Eden Gardens. Before they realise it, Virat Kohli is bounding out. Right from the characteristic bat twirl, side jogs to the shadow swing, his typical idiosyncrasies are all in place.By now, there is a sense of anticipation. The kind you have come to expect every time Kohli walks out to the middle. It felt the same on Wednesday evening. It seems no different on Friday. Anything Kohli has done so far in Kolkata has come under the microscope. Right from him bantering with Rohit Sharma to him giving throw downs to India’s bowlers to him having an extended hit in the nets. The microscope has been wide enough to encompass things he might not have done too. Prior to the series, a local publication was even ready with a front-page headline saying “Ganguly and Kohli greet each other”, only for their hopes to be dashed when they realised from photographs much later that the person behind the mask talking to Sourav Ganguly – while maintaining social distancing protocols – was Rahul Dravid, and not Kohli.

****

Much of the talk, right from the ODI series in Ahmedabad, has been around Kohli. Is Kohli his usual self? Is Kohli tired? At what point do Kohli’s lack of runs become a concern? The first time he was asked about it, Rohit offered a polite but firm response.”We’re not worried at all,” he said with a smile.Related

After India wrapped up a 3-0 series win, he was asked if Kohli lacked motivation.”Virat Kohli ko motivation ki zaroorat hai? Kya baat kar rahe ho, yaar? [Does Virat Kohli need motivation? What are you saying, my friend?]” Rohit laughed. Then prior to the T20Is, he was asked once again about Kohli. This time about Kohli’s lean patch and the kind of role a captain and coach should play when a great player goes through a run like this. Rohit let it rip.”If you guys (media) can keep quiet for a while, everything will fall in place,” Rohit snapped back. “He is in a great mental space. He has been playing international cricket for more than a decade. He knows how to handle pressure.”Virat Kohli goes big•BCCIKohli may or may not have been privy to everything said around him, as he walked out to bat. Off his second ball, he invoked awe with his wrist work. A perfectly acceptable length delivery on the stumps from Akeal Hosein was sent screaming trough square leg.Pollard reacted immediately by placing long leg to deep square. Three balls later, Kohli lapped Hosein to the fine leg boundary. This was Kohli expertly playing the field. It allowed India to overcome a slow start after Kishan’s dismissal.Rohit was reprieved on 2 in the fourth over. His timing seemed off even if his intent spelt boundaries, but Kohli was more than making up for it. In the fifth over, he stepped out and disdainfully slapped Jason Holder over extra cover. And then came the shot of the day, off Romario Shepherd. A thump over mid-on for the cameras. The pose afterwards with the flourish was within minutes being put alongside Sachin Tendulkar’s on social media for comparison. Not even when Kohli made a mind-boggling 973 runs in a single IPL season in 2016 had he managed six fours in his first 15 deliveries. The last instance of him doing this was way back in 2012, on a tour of Sri Lanka. He was admiring his shots, talking to himself, talking to his partner. There was a brief slowdown after the early frenzy. A combination of falling wickets and a turning surface was at play, but Kohli knew he needed to try and survive, before once again taking the bowlers on at the death. But he couldn’t resist when he saw a short ball angling into the pitch and a short third man wider than he should have been.

“You don’t want to be reckless but at the same time you want to play your shots. That is the balance you strive for.”Virat Kohli, to Star Sports

Kohli backed away to the leg side, used the pace and dabbed it past the fielder for a boundary. This was Kohli’s boundary since the powerplay, in the 13th over. The next ball was a juicy half-volley on the pads from Odean Smith. The kinds Kohli would put away 99 times out of a 100.”Yaar, Cheeks. Come on, yaar,” he yelped. That was Kohli firing up Kohli. This was Kohli talking to himself, willing himself on, to bat in a refreshingly different manner. “I had decided to stay positive but then we lost a few (Rohit Sharma, Suryakumar Yadav) wickets. I still wanted to keep going but unfortunately I got out ,” Kohli told Star Sports at the mid-innings break. “I was happy with my intent that I wanted to play my shots.”Sometimes when you play with responsibility over a period of time, you tend to ask (yourself) if you want to play the big shots early. You don’t want to be reckless but at the same time you want to play your shots. That is the balance you strive for.”For much of his stay at the crease, this balance was there, along with some luck, too. The shot he hit to bring up his fifty – a lofted hit over long-on – needed the tallest man in the field to have him. Jason Holder was lurking, yet could only palm the ball over the ropes. Kohli raised his bat, Eden roared, just like they did as he strode to the middle. One legitimate delivery later, he was gone. They roared again. This time to applaud a different Kohli innings from the one they’ve been seeing. This was Kohli who had batted like the Kohli of old, without the pressure of having to hold a crumbling fort, but with the freshness and freedom India would hope to see a lot more of going forward.

Brewers Pull Jackson Chourio From Game 1 vs. Cubs With Apparent Injury

The Brewers loudly announced their arrival to the National League Division Series Saturday, jumping out to a 9–1 lead on their division rivals, the Cubs.

However, it came at a price. Milwaukee left fielder Jackson Chourio exited the game with an apparent injury beating out an infield single.

The apparent injury ended a spectacular—albeit short—day for the Venezuela native. Chourio went 3-for-3, driving in three runs and scoring one. That performance came on the heels of a terrific showing in last year's NL wild-card series; he slashed .455/.500/1.000 with two home runs and three RBIs against the Mets.

In 2025, Chourio landed unsettlingly close to his 2024 numbers—he slashed .270/.308/.463 a year after slashing .275/.327/.464; he hit 21 home runs again and fell one short of his '24 RBI total. However, he missed 31 games this year, with a hamstring injury costing him almost all of August.

The Brewers said that Chourio left the game with right hamstring tightness and will continue to be evaluated, according to Adam McCalvy of MLB.com. Game 2 is scheduled for Monday in prime time in Milwaukee.

The wolves of ball street: a Hundred saga

Watch the ECB’s plans for the tournament slowly unfold on Shark Tank – with real sharks

Alan Gardner17-Oct-2024So how is the ECB’s sale of equity in the Hundred going? Is everyone diving into a swimming pool full of money, a la Scrooge McDuck? Not quite.Last month it was suggested that the process could drag on for “another year”, with the board looking for the “right partners” – which sounds a bit like a school of clown fish looking for the “right” deep sea predator to buddy up with in pursuit of long-term shareholder value. Sure enough, one of the ECB’s initial suitors, Lalit Modi, then bared his teeth, calling the proposals “overambitious”, “disconnected from reality”, and likening it to a Ponzi scheme. That swimming pool of money is beginning to look more like a shark tank.Should we have seen this coming? Anyone who’s watched will know that not finance bros are solid, upstanding types. And if your plan is to suck up to various IPL owners and hope to siphon off the benefits without being trampled over roughshod by the forces of market capitalism, well, good luck with that. The Hundred already finds itself bobbing vulnerably in a sea of T20 leagues that are not the IPL. With friends like Modi and Co, who needs enemies?Related

Steven Smith just loves batting. He doesn’t want to sit around in the change room waiting for someone else to get out before he can have a go. He wants to be out there from ball one, fidgeting his way through a whole day’s play before sitting awake all night and replaying it in his head, complete with leaves and swooshing sounds. He wants to do a job for his team, bravely putting a hand up in the wake of David Warner’s retirement to go up the order and fill a hole… Sorry, what’s that? Open the batting against Jasprit Bumrah and Mohammad Siraj on a flyer in Perth? You know, it nice to have a little bit of rest before going out. We don’t want to weaken a strength. Cam Green’s injured, is he? Well, maybe that No. 4 spot is quite comfortable after all… [continued until the end of net practice in four hours’ time].

Standards in a once-proud cricketing nation have clearly slipped. How else to explain the PCB’s reaction to Pakistan’s unprecedented humiliation in the first Test against England? Sure, there was the whimsical move to add Aleem Dar to the selection panel – as if presuming decisions made by umpires still go unquestioned – and 26 different appointments over three years in that department suggests the incompetency pathway is well established. Dropping Babar Azam, Shaheen Afridi and Naseem Shah was ballsy; so too picking three spinners, none of whom has played a first-class match since January. But where were the dramatic and heedless mid-series interventions from unaccountable suits? Where was the threat to sack the captain, or the destabilising public comments about the coach, who’s only been in the job a few months? Did anyone even consider parachuting a nephew of a board member into the squad? Come on, guys. These are the basics.Harry Brook stops for a bit of cricket between rounds of golf•Getty Images

****

England’s success in Pakistan has provided further proof of the merits of their Bazball philosophy – not least the commitment to treating cricket as something they do between rounds of golf. And they continue to break new ground in this regard. Whereas it was once enough to view a four-day finish as the perfect opportunity to squeeze in 18 holes, in Multan they turned up without their fast-bowling consultant, James Anderson, from the start, as he had a prior appointment with the Alfred Dunhill Links. He eventually arrived on day two of the first Test, which England went on to win by an innings – so clearly all is cushty. Now it must be only a matter of time before this privilege is extended to the players, with long, hot days in the field broken up by a little fourballs or some time on the putting greens to keep them fresh.

There were strong “stop, he’s already dead” vibes around India’s recent hosting of Test and T20I tours by Bangladesh. As if losing the Kanpur Test in about 12 minutes of actual cricket either side of a monsoon wasn’t painful enough, Bangladesh were then put through the meatgrinder to the tune of 297 in the final T20I. In that Hyderabad game, according to ESPNcricinfo’s Forecaster, India’s chances of winning passed 90% inside the first batting powerplay, and hovered at 98% and above from the tenth over onwards. In a world where the BCCI gets almost 40% of the ICC’s revenue distribution because, well, it says so, this is probably the sort of contest we deserve.
