Everton injury news on Calvert-Lewin

Many Everton fans have been left fuming over some injury news on Dominic Calvert-Lewin.

As shared by the official Twitter page of the Goodison Park faithful, Rafa Benitez has revealed that the former Sheffield United striker has broken his toe after problems with training.

The Spaniard added that he has an injury to his quadriceps and so the Merseyside club will now have to wait between two and three weeks or more to see if he where his fitness is.

It is a big blow to the Toffees, given that Calvert-Lewin has already notched up three goals in as many games in the Premier League so far this season (Transfermarkt), and will be sorely missed ahead of their match away at Aston Villa on Saturday evening.

Pakistan women's coach happy with tri-series show

Pakistan women’s coach Umer Rashid was pleased with the team’s performance in the recently-concluded tri-nation series and said it was better than in the Asia Cup last year where they lost to Bangladesh

Cricinfo staff21-Feb-2009Pakistan women’s coach Umer Rashid was pleased with the team’s performance in the recently-concluded tri-nation series and said it was better than in the Asia Cup last year where they lost to Bangladesh.”We beat Bangladesh both times on this tour, first by seven wickets and then by nine,” Rashid told the Pakistan daily . “So we have proved ourselves above them at least and find ourselves somewhat at par with the series winners Sri Lanka.”Pakistan were finalists in the tri-series in Bangladesh and Rashid said playing Sri Lanka twice had helped his side pick the opposition’s weaknesses. “We know ourselves better too and have a definite plan for the coming eight to 10 days. Bowling tightly with line and length and avoiding getting bogged down while batting will be one of our aims.”Rashid was particularly happy with his spinners – Javeria Khan and Naila Nazir – who he believed would be useful on Australian pitches during the World Cup. Javeria was the joint highest wicket-taker for the series with nine at 12.22 from five games, while Naila took three wickets in her first game. “Openers Nain Abidi and Bismah Maroof batted well [and] … Almas Akram came out as a fine allrounder.”The squad will meet in Karachi on February 23 for a four-day camp before leaving for Australia on February 28.

Fred was poor for Man Utd against West Ham

Manchester United survived a dramatic late scare to continue their unbeaten start to the Premier League season, seeing off West Ham United 2-1 at the London Stadium.

David Moyes made the controversial decision to bring on club captain Mark Noble to take a 95th-minute penalty with his first touch, but the skipper was denied by David de Gea.

The Spanish shot-stopper saved his first spot-kick in the top-flight since October 2014 on his 22nd attempt, sealing all three points for the Red Devils.

It rounded off an exciting comeback victory for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s charges after they initially fell behind thanks to a deflected Said Benrahma strike.

But Cristiano Ronaldo’s fourth goal in just three games leveled things up in the first half before substitute Jesse Lingard curled in a fabulous effort in the 89th minute to put United ahead.

However, it was a largely underwhelming display for the visitors, and one player in particular was below his best, adding to United’s struggles during their time in the capital.

As per SofaScore, Fred received a match rating of just 6.7 out of 10, the joint-lowest tally awarded to any player amongst his teammates.

The Brazilian international won just five of his 12 duels during his time on the pitch, lost possession 12 times and was dribbled past on a whopping five occasions by an opposition player, showing that he did not do the job that he’s in the team to do.

Fred’s role in the side is to provide defensive stability, allowing United’s attackers more freedom to flourish, but he was not able to do that at the London Stadium as his performance let his manager, and his fellow teammates, down.

Solskjaer decided to bring off the 28-year-old late on as his side searched for a winning goal, and the United boss may be tempted to start with an alternative midfield pairing next time out after the South American’s sub-par performance over the weekend.

And, in other news…Forget Lingard: Man Utd gem who won 100% of his duels was Ole’s real star against WHU

Forest failed in Domingos Quina swoop

Nottingham Forest failed with a last-minute move to bring Domingos Quina to the City Ground.

What’s the talk?

That’s according to a report by The Athletic, who claim that Forest, alongside AFC Bournemouth, Southampton, Swansea City and LOSC Lille, submitted an enquiry to Watford regarding the 21-year-old’s availability.

However, in what has since proved to be a recurring theme for Dane Murphy on transfer deadline day, the Reds failed with their attempt to land the former Portugal U21 international in the closing stages of the summer window, with Championship table-toppers Fulham eventually securing a deal for the central midfielder.

Fans will be fuming

With recent reports revealing that Nottingham Forest also missed out on deadline day moves for Josh Maja and Yuma Suzuki, the news that the Reds also failed in their bid to land Quina is sure to have left the City Ground faithful fuming.

Indeed, considering just how poorly Forest have started their 2021/22 Championship campaign, picking up a single point over their opening five fixtures of the season, it was abundantly clear that Chris Hughton was in need of further reinforcements prior to the closure of the transfer window.

And, considering the 21-year-old’s substantial amount of potential, as well as his impressive positional versatility and ability to find the back of the net from just about anywhere around the penalty area, the signing of the Watford midfielder would most certainly have been a fantastic deal for Murphy to get over the line.

However, perhaps unsurprisingly, Quina opted to join a side who very much look to be a more attractive proposition than Hughton’s outfit – who are currently rooted to the foot of the Championship table.

As such, the 62-year-old Forest manager has been left to get his side out of their sticky situation with largely the same central midfield with which he finished last season, something that would not appear to bode particularly well for the club considering their performance thus far in the second tier.

Spurs closing in on deal to sign Emerson

Tottenham Hotspur are closing in on another signing before Tuesday’s 11pm deadline…

What’s the word?

The north London outfit have made no fewer than three new additions this summer and according to renowned Italian transfer expert Fabrizio Romano, they are close to agreeing on a deal to sign Barcelona right-back Emerson Royal.

“Tottenham and Barcelona are now close to reach an agreement for Emerson, as per @gbsans. Fee will be around €30m but negotiations are not completed yet,” he tweeted.

“Serge Aurier won’t be involved in the deal. Personal terms [are] still to be agreed. NO negotiations for Moriba [to] Spurs.”

And whilst the Ivory Coast international will not be heading in the other direction, his future could still lie away from N17, as per football.london’s Alasdair Gold.

“If they do sign Emerson then it’s because they are able to get at least one [Aurier or Matt Doherty] out the door,” he claimed.

Bye-bye Aurier!

This news will be music to the ears of many as the arrival of the Brazilian international would surely spell the end for Aurier, who earlier in the summer made his intentions to leave Spurs very clear.

In an interview with French publication L’Equipe in May, he said: “Everyone knows that if I wanted to extend my contract at Tottenham, I’d have already done so. I’m not going to do that in six months’ time. I’ve experienced the Premier League and a Champions League final. I’ve reached the end of a cycle and it’s time to look elsewhere.”

Aurier’s time in north London has been marred by a combination of disciplinary issues off-the-pitch and plenty of below-par performances on it.

During the country’s first lockdown, the 28-year-old was fined for breaching the government’s regulations after he was spotted getting a haircut on social media.

[snack-amp-story url= “https://www.footballfancast.com/web-stories/read-the-latest-spurs-news-transfer-rumours-gossip-more” title= “Read the latest Spurs team and injury news, transfer rumours, gossip and much, much more!”]

Whilst after Spurs’ Carabao Cup final defeat to Manchester City, a game in which he started and played the entire duration, Sky Sports pundit Jamie Carragher lambasted his display.

“Aurier is maybe one of the biggest liabilities in Premier League football and is a player who would possibly put you off management with the amount of crazy decision he makes,” he claimed, via talkSPORT.

Indeed, the fans appear to feel the same as many showed their desire for the club to offload him in recent weeks after Sky Sports suggested the former Paris Saint-Germain man was up for sale.

Not only is Emerson a younger option at 22, but he appears to be a much more reliable option on the flank, having excelled for Real Betis over the past two seasons.

As per WhoScored, the £22.5m-rated dynamo has provided four goals and ten assists since the start of the 2019/20 La Liga season, whilst he averaged a whopping 2.7 tackles, 1.8 interceptions and one key pass per game last term alone.

Aurier is yet to play under Nuno Santo, with Japhet Tanganga ahead of him in the pecking order and by comparison, he averaged fewer interceptions and key passes, as well as racking up 1.2 fouls per Premier League outing (joint-second most in Spurs’ squad).

Therefore, on the above evidence, many around north London will undoubtedly see Emerson’s arrival as a major positive in moving the often calamitous Aurier on before tomorrow’s deadline.

This update should leave plenty of fans absolutely thrilled.

Yorkshire outclass Kent

Scorecard
Yorkshire outplayed Kent in all departments of the game to win a convincing victory by seven wickets. Richard Pyrah was the best of a mean seam bowling attack, backed up by some superb catching, while Anthony McGrath played one of his special one-day innings to lead the charge home. Kent will be disappointed by their feeble batting and inaccurate bowling, while their fielding merely qualified as average. One hour before play started, the scene at the North Marine Parade cricket ground in Scarborough looked like a county treasurer’s dream – a massive crowd stretching far down the road outside. This was partly due to the strange delay by the local club in opening the gates but once they were inside, the attendance was estimated to be 3,000 – perhaps quite conservatively, but not as large or as vibrant as is usual at this venue.Yorkshire won the toss and put Kent in to bat, expecting the ball to move around a bit, and not being disappointed. In the end, Kent did well to total 189 for 9, as they struggled to reach four runs an over for those of their innings. Deon Kruis almost yorked Joe Denly with the first ball of the match, a foretaste things to come.In his next over Denly hit him superbly straight for four, while at the other end Rob Key survived a massive appeal for a catch at the wicket off Tim Bresnan. His escape did him little good, as shortly afterwards he nudged the same bowler to slip to depart for 9, and Martin van Jaarsveld (0) followed one outside off stump to edge Kruis to the keeper. Then Justin Kemp, before scoring, edged a ball just wide of slip, and Kent were truly struggling. After 10 overs the score was just 28 for 2.There was a brief rally: Simon Cook opened his account with an excellent cut for four backward of point, and Kemp pulled short balls with power and disdain, mostly from Rana Naved. However, he needed a runner, having aggravated a back problem, and soon afterwards mistimed a straight drive, which was superbly caught by Jacques Rudolph at long off; he made 36.Despite his efforts, though, the hundred only came up in the 26th over.Pyrah, virtually a one-day specialist and a very effective one, rocked Kent with two wickets in successive deliveries: a superb fast yorker beat and bowled Cook for a creditable 42, while the next ball cut back and had the new batsman Ryan McLaren caught behind off the inside edge. Kent were 120 for 6 in the 30th over. The rest of the batting was the story of Darren Stevens. The tail gave him negligible support, but he played a superb lone hand, lofting Adil Rashid for a very high six over long-on and playing the major part in scoring 17 off the final over, bowled by Darren Gough. His 50 came off 38 balls and he finished unbeaten with 60, a most impressive fighting innings. Pyrah was the best bowler with 4 for 35, with Kruis taking 2 for 35. It was a puzzle why Bresnan, 1 for 10 off 5 overs, was not used again, but in the end it didn’t matter. Gerard Brophy, the wicketkeeper, took four catches, two of them superb, and Adam Lyth also held a fine catch.Much now depended on the performance of Kent’s bowlers in these conditions. Amjad Khan was taken off after three erratic overs, by which time Yorkshire had scored 39 off six. He was replaced by McLaren, who immediately had Andrew Gale (14) driving a catch to cover. Inexplicably Naved came in next, to be sent packing, caught wicket reaching outside off stump, second ball.Rudolph was batting well, especially superb with the cut and cover-drive, but he now reined himself in and settled down to forge a worthy stand with McGrath. Cook and McLaren also bowled very well in partnership, giving little away. Then McGrath began to get on top of Cook, hitting him for 19 in an over, the 16th of the innings, after which Yorkshire were 89 for 2. After this it was Yorkshire all the way. James Tredwell replaced Cook, but Rudolph hit him straight for six, and the hundred came up in the 19th over.Runs were coming easily and Yorkshire were cruising when Robbie Joseph surprised Rudolph with a faster ball, which he edged to the keeper for 41 (56 balls). But with Brophy at the wicket, Yorkshire scarcely missed a beat, and McGrath went to his 50 off 52 balls. His most productive stroke could be called the off-glance, a nudge that went so fine that once it bisected the keeper and slip; invariably it reached the boundary.Yorlshire did not falter, and the crowd realised victory was assured when McGrath lofted Tredwell for two leg-side sixes, although the second was almost caught. They had almost seven overs to spare when McGrath hit the winning runs, taking his score to 85 off only 80 balls. Brophy played an unsung but invaluable role for 38 not out.Much the best bowler was McLaren, who bowled just five overs to take 2 for 16; Kent erred in keeping, presumably, his remaining three overs for the ‘death’ which never came.

Journalist reveals West Ham’s transfer window priority

The London Evening Standard’s West Ham United reporter, Jack Rosser, believes that the club are aiming to strengthen in two key areas this summer, after a deal for Alphonse Areola was confirmed.

The Hammers have made just one permanent signing in this transfer window, bringing in Craig Dawson on a permanent deal after his initial loan arrival from Watford.

In terms of new signings, one has to feel that the Hammers need new blood, especially given the fact that they will be playing Europa League football this term.

A lack of movement may set alarm bells ringing amongst supporters and Rosser thinks that there are two key positions that the Irons are hopeful of strengthening: central midfield and up front.

Indeed, there is a lack of depth in both areas, with Declan Rice and Tomas Soucek the clear first-choice partnership in midfield, and Mark Noble the main back-up, while Michail Antonio is their only senior striker.

Speaking exclusively to FFC, Rosser said: “Left back is not quite the top priority but it’s somewhere, if they had the money, which this summer for most clubs is quite a big if, then they would look to do something. However, striker and central midfield are the areas they want to get sorted above anything else.”

Canada peak too late

Bermuda’s dismal batting display handed Canada the easiest of victories, by eight wickets and with almost half the possible 20 overs in hand

John Ward in Belfast05-Aug-2008
ScorecardThe play-off for fifth and sixth places in the tournament evoked little interest, even before the start of another poor match, where Bermuda’s dismal batting display handed Canada the easiest of victories, by eight wickets and with almost half the possible 20 overs in hand. Bermuda decided to omit their most famous player, Dwayne Leverock, from this match to give their reserves an outing.Canada put Bermuda in to bat and the men in blue soon lost their opener Chris Foggo, caught off a skier to long leg for 7, followed by Orande Bascombe (2) to a lesser skyer in the covers. Inexperienced as they are in this form of the game, the Associate players depart to skied catches much more regularly than do the professionals.Wickets contined to fall, including that of Bermuda’s most successful batsman of the tournament, Stephen Outerbridge, lbw to Henry Osinde for 4. After ten overs, the score was an apparently hopeless 34 for 5, and once again incompetent batting by the top order had condemned a team to humilation and probable defeat. At 45 the remaining opener, Oliver Pitcher, sliced an easy catch to backward point after holding out for a dogged 15, and the sorry procession continued. The innings slid to a sorry conclusion for 70 all out in the final over, and the Bermudan players must have felt deeply demoralised. They never at any point looked like giving a good account of themselves with the bat and Pitcher alone reached double figures. Remarkably, there was only one boundary shot in the entire innings, hit by Foggo in the opening over. Four bowlers took two cheap wickets each; Osinde, with 2 for 12, had the poorest figures of them, but arguably did the most valuable job in shattering the very shatterable top order. Steve Welsh took two middle-order wickets for just six runs in three overs, and two good catches in addition tipped the scales his way for the Man of the Match award. The question was, could Canada do any better? There was no evidence of it from the first ball of the innings, which Mohammad Qazi popped up tamely to midwicket. Canada did not need to hurry, though, and the score proceeded to 32, at which point John Davison, some would say unusually restrained in his batting for a brisk 19 off 13 balls, skied a catch to mid-on after four overs.Geoffrey Barnett took over the post of responsibility and saw his team through to an overwhelming victory by eight wickets, scoring 33 comfortably off 34 balls, while Ashish Bagai backed him up with 15 off 16 balls. Canada, at least, can go home with a convincing win under their belts, but tinged with the knowledge that they peaked a little too late.
