Norwich City: Fans call for Kjetil Knutsen

A number of Norwich City supporters have been left impressed by reported managerial candidate Kjetil Knutsen after footage of his Bodo/Glimt side was shared via Twitter.

The 53-year-old has been strongly linked with the vacant manager’s job at Carrow Road, with Dean Smith and Frank Lampard also reportedly among the leading candidates to replace Daniel Farke, who was relieved of his duties within hours of Saturday’s win at Brentford.

Knutsen made history last year by guiding Bodo/Glimt to their first Norwegian league title and his team also made waves on the continent in recent weeks, thrashing Roma 6-1 in the Europa Conference League and earning a 2-2 draw in the return fixture at the Stadio Olimpico.

According to a report in the Eastern Daily Press, he is renowned as a process-driven coach with a clear footballing identity, his tactics revolving around a possession-based, high-pressing 4-3-3 setup.

Norwich fans impressed by Knutsen

Twitter fan channel Canary Cast shared a 72-second clip from the aforementioned thrashing of Roma which showed Bodo/Glimt playing an intricate, free-flowing move with a multitude of passes before a killer through ball resulted in a sumptuous goal.

These Norwich fans were impressed by what they saw and gave their backing to Knutsen being potentially hired as Farke’s successor.

“Completely missed this. I’m sold. Get him in now. Him or Favre. Let Villa have Lampard. Any team that can put 6 past a Mourinho team and then draw 2-2 in Italy deserves some attention.”

Victoria snap out of Twenty20 mindset

Brydon Coverdale29-Oct-2009Three days is hardly the ideal pre-season build-up for the defending Sheffield Shield champions. But that’s how long Victoria have been given to adjust from Twenty20 to four-day cricket after their off-season was dominated by preparations for the multi-million dollar Champions League Twenty20 in India. The Twenty20 squad members flew out from India last Friday, weighed down by healthy prize-money for reaching the semi-finals but also the disappointment of being comprehensively knocked out by New South Wales. Then came a couple of precious days at home, the start of four-day training on Tuesday, and a flight to Adelaide for this Friday’s Sheffield Shield clash with South Australia.”It’s a super challenge for our players to switch mindsets and the physical challenges are enormously different as well,” the coach Greg Shipperd said. “Instead of bowling four overs in a day they’ll have to bowl 20, 25 overs.”There’s no doubt we’re not as fresh as we have been in the past and across the season now our whole season has been concertinaed into a shorter space of time. So, less rest between games and our management and rotation of our players is going to be extremely important.”Eight of the players in Victoria’s 12-man squad for their Shield opener were in the Twenty20 unit in India, as was Dirk Nannes, who was representing Delhi Daredevils. Only Chris Rogers, Nick Jewell and Lloyd Mash have been at home throughout October, playing grade cricket and itching for their domestic season to kick off.The players need look only as far as their team-mate Aaron Finch for proof that quick adjustment is possible. Finch was part of the Champions League squad and arrived home on Friday, then a few hours later was in Geelong playing grade cricket and posted a healthy 138 from 143 balls. There are others who, like Finch, had little to do in India but run drinks and train in the nets. Among them was Bryce McGain, who seven months ago was making his Test debut in Cape Town and now finds himself fighting with Jon Holland for the role of Victoria’s No. 1 spinner.Form guide: Victoria in 2008-09

Shield – 1st

FR Cup – 2nd

Twenty20 – 2nd

Holland is in India with Australia’s one-day team but will be back in Melbourne in time for Victoria’s second Sheffield Shield game. It means that McGain, 37, is under pressure to deliver this weekend in Adelaide to show that he deserves to retain his state position throughout the summer.”Bryce is champing at the bit to play. This is a huge game for him to again give himself some confidence that those skills are still there,” Shipperd said. “We are really confident that they’re still there and we believe that if he is not the best spinner in the country, then he is a close second to whoever the other person may be.”Bryce is very keen to make the most of these first three or four [Shield and FR Cup] games while Jon is away and then we have got some selection headaches. That will help to put the pressure on the Victorian selectors to think long and hard about who’s the best for which situation, which form of the game we’re playing. We’ll need to delicately balance that as the season unfolds.”While Cameron White is with the ODI team, Victoria will be captained by David Hussey, who will be charged with giving the side a positive start after they reached all three finals in 2008-09. They did the same in 2007-08 but have only that year’s Twenty20 title and last season’s Sheffield Shield to show for the six final appearances.Unlike several other states Victoria have retained a settled squad this summer, losing only the limited-overs wicketkeeper Adam Crosthwaite during the off-season. But with men like Brad Hodge, Shane Harwood, McGain and Damien Wright in their mid to late 30s, the window for winning more silverware with this group will begin to close.Harwood, 35, is already having his workload managed and has been rested from Friday’s Sheffield Shield opener and will join the squad for the FR Cup game that follows. The next couple of months will be hectic for the Bushrangers, who must squeeze in five Sheffield Shield games and seven one-dayers before Christmas.Victoria squad Chris Rogers, Nick Jewell, Lloyd Mash, Brad Hodge, David Hussey (capt), Andrew McDonald, Rob Quiney, Matthew Wade (wk), John Hastings, Clint McKay, Bryce McGain, Dirk Nannes.

Pitch causes a dust storm

There’s nothing quite like a pitch imbroglio to stir the passions, and even moreso when that strip is playing host to an Ashes decider

Alex Brown at The Oval21-Aug-2009

There was plenty of turn at The Oval – as Alastair Cook found out – and the pitch is provoking much debate•Getty Images

There’s nothing quite like a pitch imbroglio to stir the passions, and even more so when that strip is playing host to an Ashes decider. Truth be told, Australia’s dramatic second innings stagger was more attributable to England’s disciplined bowling performance than a dodgy deck, but with tensions high and an urn on the line, the parched Oval wicket emerged as a major discussion point after the second day’s play.Michael Holding, Shane Warne, Scyld Berry and Peter Roebuck all waded into the pitch debate on Friday, variously describing the surface as over-baked, disappointing and even unethical. After stumps on the first day, Ian Bell commented that the surface played like a day three strip; a view shared by Stuart Broad who, on Friday, felt the footmarks, dust and general scarring were more akin to a fourth day wicket. At best, The Oval staff erred in their predictions of a traditional, pacey pitch and at worst they were deceptive. A hot, dry week in London leading up to the Ashes decider no doubt contributed to the bone-dry centre strip, but whether groundstaff harboured an underlying desire to produce a result wicket, as has been alleged in some quarters, is unclear. To the credit of the Australians, no attempt was made to use the abrasive wicket as an excuse for Friday’s meek capitulation at the hands of Broad and Graeme Swann. Simon Katich, comfortably Australia’s best batsman with a dogged 50, directed praise towards England’s attack, rather than vitriol towards The Oval’s groundstaff, when assessing the second day’s play.”I guess there will be a fair bit said about that, but the bottom line is England bowled well today and unfortunately we couldn’t stop the momentum,” Katich said. “A fair bit of credit deserves to go to Stuart Broad and Graeme Swann. The rest of the guys bowled well, but they obviously got the rewards. They deserve a bit of credit rather than talking about the wicket.”There weren’t a lot of balls that disturbed the surface. There were a few, you could see them on the slow-mos, but I think the bottom line is England got the momentum and after the initial partnership we had we just couldn’t string another one together and stop that momentum. It only takes one partnership to stop that and unfortunately that was just the way the day panned out. I think the English bowlers deserve some credit. Both teams are playing on the same wicket.”There is little doubt that The Oval wicket deceived both the Australian and English camps prior to the fifth Test. The Australians would dearly love to be throwing the ball Nathan Hauritz’s way from Saturday morning, while England would presumably have switched Steve Harmison for Monty Panesar if given another chance. But to blame the pitch for Australia’s woes is to miss the point. The tourists surrendered much of their Headingley advantage with an indisciplined first innings bowling performance at The Oval that yielded 38 extras and 44 boundaries. England, by contrast, never allowed the Australian batsmen a moment of respite on Friday, as reflected in the seven extras and 25 boundaries they conceded.”What we found as a batting unit was you never felt particularly in on the wicket, it was quite hard to drive on and the ball popped on the odd occasion,” said Broad, England’s five-wicket hero. “Today it probably played a bit like a fourth day wicket but no ball particularly misbehaved. You can’t look at the wicket and blame the wicket”We found it quite hard to score on, to drive on. It was important to bring the stumps into play because it’s not easy to leave on length like a normal Oval wicket. It’s a bit more up and down. My plan was to really bring the stumps into play, and look for bowleds, lbws and caught at slips because it’s quite a slow wicket.”

Donnohue drops promising Raphinha claim

Leeds United will not part ways with Raphinha for less than £51m this January.

What’s the talk?

That’s according to a claim made by Leeds Live journalist Joe Donnohue, who stated in a recent interview with GIVEMESPORT that Victor Orta will not contemplate selling the 24-year-old winger unless an offer is submitted that amounts to three times the £17m fee the Brazil international cost the Whites back in October of last year.

A number of reports have linked the forward with a move away from Elland Road over the course of the last year, with the likes of Liverpool, Manchester United and Chelsea all being touted as potential suitors for the former Stade Rennais man.

However, when discussing how much Raphinha would cost to sign, Donnohue said: “I think you’re looking at at least three times the figure they paid if he were to be sold. It would depend on the timing that he’d be sold. I think you’re looking at, at the very minimum, three times that £17m figure.”

Fans will be buzzing

Considering just how impressive Raphinha has been since his arrival at the club, the news that Leeds do not look likely to sanction the sale of the winger for anything less than £51m – a fee which it would be difficult to see a club splashing out on the 24-year-old, particularly in January – is sure to have left fans buzzing.

Indeed, over his 30 Premier League appearances last season, the €40m-rated (£34m-rated) man scored six goals, registered nine assists and created a whopping 12 big chances for his teammates, as well as taking an average of 2.2 shots and making 2.2 key passes per game.

These returns saw the player who Alan Hutton dubbed a “nightmare” earn a seasonal SofaScore match rating of 7.14, ranking him as Marcelo Bielsa’s third-best performer in the top flight.

The £58k-per-week winger has continued this form over his 10 Premier League fixtures so far this season, having already bagged five goals and created three big chances for his teammates, in addition to making an average of 2.2 key passes and taking 3.5 shots per match.

These metrics have seen the Brazilian average a SofaScore match rating of 7.26, ranking him as the 30th-best player in the entirety of the division, as well as Leeds’ best.

As such, the fact that it appears as if Raphinha will remain at Elland Road beyond the January transfer window is undoubtedly fantastic for the club, as it very much seems the winger will be at the centre of any success the Whites go on to achieve in the current campaign.

Sehwag finds form in easy win

Barring Harbhajan Singh’s four-wicket haul late in the chase, the Delhi Daredevils dominated their final league game with their power-hitting top order taking them to a four-wicket win

Barring a late scare by Harbhajan Singh , who took 4 for 17, the Delhi Daredevils go into the semi-final with a confidence boosting six-wicket win against the Mumbai Indians. At the toss Virender Sehwag said he wanted to field to give his side some much needed practice chasing. And a fair bit of practice they got, with Sehwag leading the power-hitting top order who stayed ahead of the fairly steep required run-rate.Gautam Gambhir and David Warner, Delhi’s openers, blitzed to 30 in the first three overs. It started from the sixth ball of the first over. Lasith Malinga found bounce and bowled over but Gambhir picked his slower bouncer and pulled it for four to square leg. Then Gambhir and Warner hit 22 off the next 12 balls. Gambhir walked out and hit Dhawal Kulkarni for a four behind square leg before lifting a fuller one down the ground for another boundary.Rahil Shaikh began his IPL campaign with a high full toss that Warner pulled to midwicket boundary before being picked for another in the same area by Gambhir. Warner lofted Kulkarni for a six over long-on but then top-edged one and ended up losing his wicket and his bat. But Delhi couldn’t afford to slow down, needing over seven an over. Not that they would slow down when Sehwag joined Gambhir at the crease. Kulkarni was the one to suffer as Sehwag scored boundaries off whatever length he bowled. He gave away 36 in three overs.Harbhajan came on at the end of the Powerplays with Delhi at 60 for 1. He kept it tight by mixing flighted deliveries with flatter and sharper ones but it didn’t help as Sehwag and Gambhir instead picked the boundaries from the other end. Gambhir played Abhishek Nayar’s shorter deliveries to the fine leg and midwicket boundaries while Sehwag hit a half-volley over the bowler’s head for a six. After ten overs Delhi were 93 for 1 in contrast to Mumbai, who were 72 for 3 at the same stage.Prime Numbers17The number of runs conceded by Harbhajan while claiming the best figures for a Mumbai bowler10The number of innings taken by Sehwag to reach his first half-century of the tournament10The number of overs in which Delhi scored 10 runs or more4The number of Delhi bowlers in today’s match who have taken 10 or more wickets in the tournament24The number of extras conceded by Delhi, the second highest in the tournamentGambhir finally fell in the 12th over, again walking down the track but mistiming a loft to a diving Mohammad Ashraful at third man. But by then the required run-rate had come down to under seven an over, mostly owing to the wides conceded by Sanath Jayasuriya. Tillakaratne Dilshan waited only two balls before going for the big shot. He hooked a slower ball by Malinga to deep backward square leg for six. Jayasuriya further pulled down the asking rate to less than six, this time owing to Sehwag who made room to hit him for four over extra cover and a six over long-on. Dilshan stuck into Malinga in the next and overs 12 to 14 cost Mumbai a whopping 39. Sehwag got his fifty immediately after that but the two batsmen fell off successive balls to Harbhajan. There were some tense moments for Delhi after that. Harbhajan gave away only three and JP Duminy two. Harbhajan came back to pick up AB de Villiers and Rajat Bhatia off successive balls as well. de Villiers was caught at midwicket trying to flick him for a six and Bhatia misread an offbreak and was bowled for 2. At the end of that over, Delhi needed 12 off 18, with four wickets in hand. Amit Mishra ensured they needed only three of those balls, hitting Duminy for a six and a four, and Mumbai ended their IPL campaign at No.7, after having being a semi-final contender at one point. However their batsmen, led by Ajinkya Rahane, had given them a chance to end on a positive note. Rahane began attacking after the Powerplay overs and added 73 with Sachin Tendulkar. Bhatia, bowling his slow-medium stuff, had sent down four tight balls and a wide before Tendulkar messed up the over with two beautifully executed fours. He late-cut the first to the third-man boundary and drove the next straight past the bowler to long-on. After the strategy break, the two took advantage of Mishra’s poor length and scored 15 off his third over. Even after Tendulkar fell, Rahane kept the scoreboard ticking and got to his second half-century of the season from 37 balls. Mumbai scored 56 off the last five overs but Delhi’s batsmen came in to form and spoiled their farewell.

Razzaq says he's out of the ICL

Abdul Razzaq, the Pakistan allrounder, says he has been released from his contract with the ICL

Cricinfo staff22-May-2009Abdul Razzaq, the Pakistan allrounder, says he has been released from his contract with the ICL. The news could not be confirmed with the ICL, which on Wednesday released 50-odd players from their contracts, but, if true, Razzaq would qualify for the amnesty announced by the PCB.”I have been released from my contract with the ICL,” Razzaq told Cricinfo. “I am available and willing to play for Pakistan.”It won’t be that simple: Unlike other boards that have announced an umbrella amnesty for players quitting the ICL by May 31, the PCB said it would consider selecting players on a case-by-case basis. “While permitting such players to play cricket, PCB will decide on case-to-case basis the penalties to be imposed and the time period for which they will remain banned,” the PCB said.Though the BCCI has put in place a ‘cooling off’ period of a year – whereby an ex-ICL player will only be eligible to represent India after a year away from the ICL – the PCB in effect, has left the door open for players to return sooner. The stance adopted by the PCB is understandable, given how badly it was affected by the ban on ICL players. Nineteen players from Pakistan signed up with the league, nearly half of whom, can conceivably represent Pakistan still. The defection took away nearly the entire bench strength of the national side. Key among them are the likes of Razzaq and Mohammad Yousuf, and even players such as Imran Nazir, who could well be part of a Pakistan line-up in one of the three formats of the game. The move by various national boards to offer amnesty to the ICL players was prompted by the BCCI’s offer to ICL’s Indian players that was made on April 29. Since then, the Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, New Zealand and South Africa boards have proceeded similarly.

McCullum defends New South Wales move

Brendon McCullum, the New Zealand wicketkeeper, has termed his much-debated move to play Twenty20 for New South Wales as innovative and one that could add “tremendous value” to his domestic side, Otago. McCullum’s hasty switch to New South Wales for the Australian domestic Twenty20 final was received with varied reactions, but McCullum has said people are entitled to their opinion and he is not offended.”This is clearly new ground, and a sign of the changing landscape that is Twenty20 cricket globally,” McCullum wrote in the . “There has been much discussion of my move, throughout Australia and New Zealand, and I’m sure that not everyone will agree on what’s right or wrong in this instance. One thing is for sure: the game has changed over the past 12 to 18 months with the development of Twenty20 cricket, and the game will continue to change as we move forward.”McCullum said it was his responsibility to “enhance rather than diminish” the value of Otago cricket, although he did not clarify how his appearance for New South Wales would help Otago. “I will not try to defend my decision, as in my mind, the motives were sound, and I also believe people are entitled to their opinion, and the decision to take offence to criticism is always in the eye of the beholder.”In a confused radio interview last week, Andrew Symonds criticised McCullum’s move, while Matthew Hayden said it was indicative of New Zealand’s “disappointing” international schedule. McCullum has brushed off Symonds’ jibe. “Andrew Symonds’ much-publicised spray, although inappropriate, has not upset me, and I feel no animosity towards him for this,” he said.In the end McCullum only scored 10 off 11 balls in the final in Sydney – which NSW won by five wickets – but said it was a fantastic experience. “It was an amazing event and, with 20,000 people turning up, it once again showed how popular Twenty20 has become.”
