Paranavitana solves a top-order problem

Tharanga Paranavitana is not a very remarkable batsman, but the man has done his job in this series

Tharanga Paranavitana is not a very remarkable batsman. When Tillakaratne Dilshan cuts and slashes and hooks, Paranavitana quietly blends into the background and picks runs. He doesn’t have Kumar Sangakkara’s extravagant drives, nor Mahela Jayawardene’s silken shots. If you run into him in an elevator, chances are you won’t recognise him. He is not a lawyer, nor is he the man with the funky beard and a shot named after him. He is neither the polished batsman from the Colombo school, nor the maverick from outstation. But the man has done his job in this series. Yes it was a flat track, yes the bowling was largely uninspired, but he finished his second century in two matches. And no Test century is easy – not for openers at least. Not long ago, Paranavitana was not completing that job. In the 10 Tests before this series, he had crossed 50 four times, but failed to get the centuries that the openers are eventually judged by, when they are all batted and done. Lahiru Thirimanne, part of Test squad, had started breathing down his neck too, with 66 and 102 in the tour game.Paranavitana’s reaction upon reaching both those centuries, more extravagant than anything he did during those innings, are perhaps an indication that he had felt the heat. Both the times he has brought up the century while running towards the players’ gallery, and he has continued running towards his mates both the times. Both the innings were worth celebrating, coming from a player who not long ago threatened to become one of the long list of left-hand Sri Lankan openers who squandered their opportunities after Marvan Atapattu and Sanatha Jayasuriya stopped opening. Avishka Gunawardene, Michael Vandort, Jehan Mubarak, Upul Tharanga, and Malinda Warnapura must have been waiting for him to join the club. The team management, though, saw something extra in Paranavitana and persisted. The first century has been a big step. Dilshan, his opening partner, sees a more confident man since that effort in Galle. “First hundred is very difficult in Test cricket,” says Dilshan who now has a Tharanga to open with in all formats of the game – Upul Tharanga being the other opener in limited-overs games. “After the first hundred, he has got more confident. Today he went after loose balls. I feel he is much more comfortable now.”It was important that Sri Lanka found an opener who could play the Atatpattu to Dilshan’s Jayasuriya. This is not to compare Paranavitana with Atapattu, but he has now begun to play a somewhat similar role in the partnership. “The thing is, he is giving me strike most of time, so I can go after loose balls,” says Dilshan. “The important thing in the partnership is that I get freedom to go after the early overs. Then both sides are very relaxed, he gets his singles, I attack. We are both very understanding. [Paranavitana’s presence is] really helpful for me.”Dilshan is optimistic that Sri Lanka are pretty close to fill the opening void left by Jayasuriya and Atapattu. “Conventional opener. Takes his time earlier, if you give loose balls later, he will attack. He has adjusted to international cricket now. Now he knows how to handle the 70s and 80s. Now he is matured, getting more hundreds for our team. Perfectly good for us as we have found a very good opener.”Apart from the centuries the other yardstick to judge openers is how well they do in conditions alien to them. The SSC, for example, is where Paranavitana has played most of his cricket. Given the current schedules, he might not be tested away from home too soon, but he has perhaps made sure that he will be present for that test when it does arrive.

Rangers closing in on deal for defender

A major update has emerged on Rangers and their attempts to make a fourth signing of the transfer window…

What’s the talk?

Football Scotland journalist Mark Hendry has claimed that the Gers are set to bring in a new defender to bolster the squad on deadline day, having already sealed deals to sign James Sands, Amad Diallo and John Souttar this month.

He Tweeted: “Rangers close to signing right-back Mateusz Zukowski.”

Delight

Gio van Bronckhorst will surely be delighted with this news as this will come as a much-needed boost to his squad on the final day of the window.

He lost Nathan Patterson to Premier League side Everton in a club-record deal at the start of the month and Zukowski could finally be his replacement.

Whilst Patterson was not a huge loss for the first team in the immediate future, he was the succession plan for James Tavernier at right-back and the Gers were left without an alternative after his sale.

Van Bronckhorst is currently bereft of options in the full-back position and this signing will give him more to work with in terms of rotation across multiple competitions in the second half of the campaign.

Zukowski, at the age of 20, has the potential to grow and take on Tavernier’s place in the team further down the line and could be the ideal replacement for the Scotland international who departed for Goodison. He already has a wealth of experience in Poland despite exiting his teens in November of 2021, having played 50 senior games for Gdansk.

In the Ekstraklasa this season, he has averaged a SofaScore rating of 6.84. He has scored two goals and provided one assist, whilst making a whopping 3.9 tackles and interceptions per game for Gdansk, showing that he is adept at winning possession back for his side.

This suggests that he could be ready to make the step to the Premiership in the short-term as a back-up option at right-back, which is another reason why van Bronckhorst will be delighted with this news. However, the biggest plus point for this move is that it provides the Dutch head coach with a long-term successor to Tavernier – instead of being left in the lurch further down the line if the ex-Magpies man leaves in the next few transfer windows.

O provável Cruzeiro tem Fábio; Rafael Galhardo (Lennon), Leo, Digão e Bryan; Lucas Romero (Lucas Silva) e Henrique; Rafinha, Thiago Neves e Alisson (Robinho); De Arrascaeta.

Morale boosting win for Zimbabwe U-19

The Zimbabwe Under-19 team rounded off its preparations for the World Cup with a two-wicket win against Titans in Paarl.

Cricinfo staff08-Jan-2010The Zimbabwe Under-19 team rounded off its preparations for the World Cup with a two-wicket win against Titans in Paarl. After electing to field first, Zimbabwe’s opening bowlers Calum Price and Tendai Chitara hit their straps immediately to have the hosts reeling at three wickets down with less than 30 on the board. A middle-order recovery overcame a fine fielding performance to take the score to 183 runs.Zimbabwe’s response followed a similar theme of early wickets followed by a resurgence. The chase was initially was stunted by a fine opening salvo from the Titans’ seamers who had the visitors in a shambles at 28 for 4. The rebuilding phase was masterminded by Tinotenda Mutombodzi and Andrew Lindsay, who added 70 runs to bring their side back into the game. Titans’ spinners restored parity by dismissing both batsmen with fifty runs still required for victory. However, Nathan Waller put paid to the hosts’ hopes of a back-door victory with a belligerent 40 that took Zimbabwe home with an over to spare. The squad will be buoyed by this win as they head to New Zealand for the Under-19 World Cup.

Newcastle eyeing Phil Jones swoop

An update has emerged on Manchester United defender Phil Jones, regarding Newcastle’s interest in his services.

What’s the talk?

According to The Sun, the Magpies are one of the teams eyeing him up as a possible target for the January transfer window.

The report names Watford as one of the other clubs interested in the English centre-back, whilst Championship side Derby – managed by Wayne Rooney – are also in the running.

Blunder

Eddie Howe, who is reportedly close to taking over at St. James’ Park, could make an early blunder by signing Jones from United. The ex-Bournemouth coach must avoid making a major mistake in his first window by opting against a deal for the Englishman.

[snack-amp-story url= “https://www.footballfancast.com/web-stories/check-out-the-latest-newcastle-howe-ter-stegen” title= “Read the latest Newcastle news!”]

Put simply, there is no need for the club to take such a risk with Jones when they can look elsewhere. If Newcastle are looking to sign players to help them avoid relegation then availability and reliability are two factors that must be closely considered and Jones’ track record suggests that he is a dud who will not be able to provide what they need.

United legend Rio Ferdinand once blasted him as a ‘waste of time’ for remaining at Old Trafford despite his lack of minutes on the pitch. He said:

“He’s done well. Listen, good luck to him if you can get it. Staying at Man United is a great gig, but I look at him as a person, are you really going to be happy sitting there all these years.

“There are players who are happy to just sit at clubs and not play and just chill. Winston Bogarde did it at Chelsea for about three or four years. Signed a big deal and commuted in from Holland.

“If I was in the squad with someone like that I wouldn’t talk to them. They are a waste of time, why would I chat to you and give you any energy, taking that away from my other teammates who are here to play and go into battle for 90 minutes every week.”

The defender is said to be on £110k-per-week at the club and has made eight appearances since the start of the 2019/20 campaign. Jones has suffered 22 separate injuries for United, with his latest one keeping him out for 78 competitive matches.

This shows how unreliable he is due to his injury situation and Howe should not be trying to take a risk with the dud in January. Instead, the Magpies should try to sign a player with recent first-team involvement so that they can hit the ground running in the second-half of the season.
