Nottingham Forest: Fans will be relieved their Leo Bonatini nightmare has ended

What a disappointment Leo Bonatini’s been since he arrived in January! Indeed, Nottingham Forest fans will be happy to see the back on him and it’s no surprise.

Birmingham Live, via Nottinghamshire Live, have reported they don’t expect Forest to make the loan from Wolves permanent after a disastrous time at the City Ground. He’s only played five times in the Championship and hasn’t scored once.

Forest are in need of firepower and that’s why he was brought in, but he’s clearly had no impact whatsoever. He’s been useless and doesn’t deserve to return at the start of next season. Who knows what Wolves will do with him now? Thankfully, it’s not Forest’s problem, of which they have enough.

Clearly, the club have to aim to push into the play-offs next season, but they won’t get anywhere near if he’s relied on for goals. Luckily, now he’s going, they have a space in the squad for a youngster or a new signing that can actually put the ball over the line.

The Brazilian is rated at £4.5m on Transfermarkt, but we’re not sure where they’ve got that from. Forest shouldn’t take him off Wolves’ hands if they were going to give him away. It seems sense has prevailed and he’ll get nowhere near the Forest shirt again.

He’s still just 25-years-old, so he has some developing to do yet, but he needs to do that somewhere else now. The fans won’t have the patience for him next year, but fans at a new club might do. What a relief it is for Forest to see the back of him.

Mallik Wilks could be Leeds’ secret weapon next season

Leeds United managed to squeeze past Sheffield Wednesday at Elland Road earlier on today, which has taken them one step closer towards securing promotion to the Premier League.

The Whites simply have to make the most of their promising position in the race for automatic promotion as dropping into the play-offs could end in heartbreak with league form going out of the window.

Although, Marcelo Bielsa should start weighing up his options ahead of next season, rather than solely focusing on promotion to the Premier League, as the summer transfer window will be crucial, regardless of the league.

Sadly, Leeds aren’t exactly blessed with loads of options at the pinnacle of the attack as Patrick Bamford and Kemar Roofe are currently the Whites’ only strikers, with Tyler Roberts dropping deeper.

But, things could change next season as one of the Yorkshire club’s loan players is enjoying plenty of success at this moment in time. Mallik Wilks has really come into his own since moving to Doncaster Rovers on loan back in the summer transfer window as he’s produced an impressive 16 goals and eight assists this season.

The Whites have struggled for creativity at times in Samu Saiz’s absence, so Wilks could be the man to fill the creativity void in the final third having produced eight assists at the Keepmoat Stadium.

He could save the club millions and ticks so many boxes, so Bielsa would be crazy not to give him a chance next season.

Not many teams in the Championship or in the Premier League will know about the 20-year-old, so he could be a deadly secret weapon off the substitutes’ bench for the Whites.

Of course, after witnessing Jack Clarke’s rise to stardom in the current campaign, it would make sense to give another thriving youngster a chance at Elland Road.

Cult Heroes: Marcus Stewart at Huddersfield Town

Huddersfield have had their fair share of lethal strikers over the years yet one in particular still brings a buzz to the club’s supporters when his name is mentioned.

After enjoying an immensely successful start to his career with Bristol Rovers, Marcus Stewart initially attracted the interest of the Terriers after scoring against them in the Second Division (now referred to as League One) play-off final in 1995. Huddersfield would emerge victorious at Wembley Stadium and used their promotion to lure the forward to join them a season later after he once again impressed at the Memorial Stadium.

Under the guidance of then-boss Brian Horton, Stewart made a bright start to life in Yorkshire, scoring 11 goals in all competitions as his side narrowly avoided relegation. The following two campaigns saw the former Rovers ace really start to flourish as he fired in 16 and then 26 goals for the Terriers as they began to establish themselves as a regular First Division side.

The 1999-2000 season saw the arrival of Steve Bruce as manager, who looked certain to secure promotion with Stewart flying up-front. The forward hit the back of the net on 15 occasions in the first half of the campaign which played a huge role in Huddersfield leading the standings at Christmas. However, at the turn of the century, the Terriers experienced an incredible collapse in form, which could be attributed to one event.

After demonstrating an outstanding level of consistency in the first division, Stewart caught the attention of Ipswich Town who decided to swoop in the winter transfer window, offering a fee of £2.5m to Huddersfield. Although Bruce was reluctant to accept, the club eventually agreed a deal which turned out to be a disastrous decision.

Not only did the Tractors go on to achieve promotion later on in the season with Stewart leading their line but it was his absence from the Terriers side that eventually saw them drop out of the promotion hunt as they finished in a disappointing eighth position. Whilst Ipswich would go on to enjoy a successful season the following year in the Premier League, Huddersfield never recovered and as a result were relegated back to the Third Division in 2001, just a year after selling their most prized asset.

Although the move was regarded as controversial at the time, the club’s supporters now regard Stewart as one of the cult heroes. During his five year spell with the Terriers, the marksman scored a total of 58 goals in 133 appearances and provided a number of memorable moments.

In what is a testament to the player, only two other forwards have managed to beat his total of 26 in a single season in the last twenty years.

Now considered a marker in which every Huddersfield striker is judged by, the likes of Karlan Grant and Aaron Rowe will be hoping to reach the levels displayed by Stewart next season in the Championship. If they can do this, there is no reason why the Terriers cannot secure an immediate return to the top flight.

Arsenal: The Premier League an awful lot more important than Europe

Last week has left Arsenal with a bit of a hurdle to jump, hasn’t it? It’s certainly not a mountain to climb, because they could progress with a 2-0 win, but it’s still an annoying distraction from the top four race, and the team are now at a crossroads.

The win against United has meant they’re now in a brilliant position to finish in the top four, or even come third, in this season’s Premier League. So priority has shifted from perhaps a Europa League win being their key into the Champions League, to the domestic league holding a great chance too.

It seems sensible now to prioritise the league and field a side in the Europa League that wouldn’t hamper the squad’s fitness for the weekend. If they progress through the competition with that mentality, then great. In the final, they could then go all-out.

However, if they get knocked out, it wouldn’t be such a blow as it would have been if Spurs had maintained such strong form and United would have beaten them at the weekend. There’s belief that Unai Emery and his side deserve to play in the Champions League next season, and it’s hard to argue with that, so it’s important they don’t burn themselves out trying to succeed in both.

Worst case scenario, Emery makes his key men play too many minutes and their performances in both the Europa League and Premier League drop so they don’t earn Champions League through either. That would then hinder the club’s ability to attract the players Emery wants to create a team capable of fighting for the title.

The Premier League should now be the focus, despite Emery’s success in the continent’s second-tier competition.

Arsenal fans, how do you think Unai Emery should approach team selection in the Europa League? Join the discussion by commenting below…

Liverpool striker Taiwo Awoniyi wanted by Schalke amid work permit doubts

[ad_pod ]

According to Sky Sports, Liverpool striker Taiwo Awoniyi is reportedly on the radar of Bundesliga side Schalke, who are said to be monitoring the forward’s availability amid doubts over his chances of obtaining a work permit.

What’s the word, then?

Well, the Nigerian international has been on the Reds’ books since 2015, but he is yet to make a senior appearance for the club as he does not qualify for a work permit.

The 21-year-old has had loan spells with FSV Frankfurt, NEC Nijmegen and Gent since signing for Liverpool, and is currently out on loan with Belgian side Royal Excel Mouscron – his second stint at the club.

Who has the loudest fans in Europe? PSG certainly state their claim in the video below…

Awoniyi has impressed for the Pro League side this season, notching six goals in seven games since returning to the club in January after spending the first half of the campaign with Gent.

Liverpool would want a fee in excess of £13m for the youngster if his work permit status is not resolved, whilst they are also open to another loan deal.

Bad news for English clubs

The Merseysiders offered Awoniyi an improved five-year contract extension last summer, which he duly signed, but the Reds’ hopes of seeing the young Nigerian in action for them will surely be dealt a blow by the impending introduction of Brexit.

Under the incoming rules, players such as Jorginho, Riyad Mahrez and Alexandre Lacazette would have struggled to qualify for a work permit to play in the Premier League – it would be near impossible for the Algerian international Mahrez to have made the move to Leicester he did back in 2014 under the incoming restrictions.

For players of that calibre not to be allowed to play in England speaks volumes about young prospects such as Awoniyi ever getting the chance to play here, which is bad news for English clubs but great news for teams such as Schalke who are monitoring Awoniyi’s situation.

Liverpool fans may never get to see the youngster wear the badge in front of them, despite their obvious high hopes for him.

Injury News: Longstaff out for the rest of the season

[ad_pod ]

Sean Longstaff is expected to miss the rest of the season, Newcastle have confirmed, but will this drag the Magpies back into the relegation scrap?

What’s the story?

Longstaff was replaced with a knee injury in Newcastle’s 2-0 defeat at West Ham, and the club have confirmed that the youngster suffered ligament damage.

In a statement on their official site, the Magpies said: “Newcastle United can confirm midfielder Sean Longstaff is likely to miss the remainder of the 2018/19 season with a knee ligament injury.”

There is light at the end of the tunnel though, as The Chronicle reports that the midfielder will not require surgery to repair the damage in his knee.

This means he could be back in light training by the end of March, and will presumably be 100 per cent fit by the beginning of next season.

Silver linings

Longstaff has been fabulous for Rafael Benitez since breaking into the side, simultaneously providing both physicality and defensive contribution as well as calmness in possession and high quality passing.

This is something that St. James’ Park simply hasn’t seen recently barring the odd Jonjo Shelvey master-class, and there’s no doubt they will miss the 21 year-old.

However, with Shelvey, Mo Diame and Ki Sung-yueng all waiting in the wings, Benitez still has more options in midfield that he had at this point last season, when he was able to not only escape the drop but surge up into the top ten.

With Fulham and Huddersfield all but doomed, Magpies fans should take solace in the fact that Cardiff will play four of the top six in their last nine games. The Bluebirds have also lost Sol Bamba to injury, so they are definitely the favourites to go down.

As far as knee ligament injuries go, if Longstaff returns next season in perfect shape with the club’s Premier League status still in tact, this is about as good as it gets.

Everton fans want Zouma signed permanently after Huddersfield performance

[ad_pod ]

Loads of Everton fans have been running the rule over their win at Huddersfield, and they’re absolutely desperate to bring Kurt Zouma to Merseyside on a permanent basis.

Everton finally showed the fight that fans have been yearning for on Tuesday night, scrapping tooth and nail for three points in a really hotly contested clash at the John Smith’s Stadium.

Richarlison gave Marco Silva’s side the perfect start when he slotted home from close range after just three minutes, but it wasn’t all plain sailing.

Be sure to check out the incredible story of the man who rose from a Tanzanian refugee camp to become one of Australia’s biggest football stars in the video below…

Lucas Digne, who has been mostly exceptional since signing for the club, was sent off around the hour mark when he denied Adama Diakhaby the chance to run through at goal.

Silva’s side then had to show real determination to come home with all three points, and both Zouma and centre back partner Michael Keane were monumental.

The Frenchman, who joined the Toffees on loan from Chelsea last summer (BBC), won five aerial duels, made five interceptions and five clearances (Whoscored).

Crystal Palace fans praise James McArthur

Crystal Palace took a big step towards returning to the Premier League’s top half on Saturday.

The Eagles hosted Newcastle United at Selhurst Park, and won 1-0 thanks to a fantastic free-kick from Netherlands international Patrick van Aanholt. Their first victory in eight games means they are now nine points clear of the relegation zone in 13th place, and only three points away from getting back into the top ten.

Did he really play for us?! No Palace fan has managed to name all of these obscure Eagles signings….

Several of Roy Hodgson’s men put in performances that were worth celebrating, and James McArthur is one of his players who stood out – at least according to the supporters. Many were over the moon with the showing he put in, and they took to Twitter to share their delight.

It was surprising that so many fans thought he had a fantastic day at the office – he was dribbled past five times and gave away three fouls. Clearly, stats don’t tell the whole story.

Others, meanwhile, were quick to point out how underrated he is.

The fans obviously think he is deserving of far more praise than he currently gets. But if he plays like this on a regular basis, supporters will likely be quick to share their adulation far more often.
