Big blow: Leeds fans gutted after Alioski comes off injured

[ad_pod ]

Leeds fans are feeling gutted after Ezgjan Alioski had to come off injured against Brentford.

The Macedonian international has been one of Marcelo Bielsa’s most consistently selected players this season having started all 44 of Leeds United’s Championship games so far.

It is unknown how long the left-sided player will miss for the Whites, but initial signs don’t look good as the usually resilient Alioski had to be replaced by Stuart Dallas early on at Griffin Park.

With Barry Douglas also ruled out for the remainder of the season this injury will be a huge dent in Leeds’ promotion push, with Leif Davis or Dallas two potential options who will have to step up to play left-back during the most vital part of the season.

Marcelo Bielsa’s side are still behind in the race for the Premier League and an injury to a key player such as Alioski will make things much harder for the Whites in the final two games of the campaign.

Here’s what Leeds fans have been saying on Twitter…

West Ham fans react to Samir Nasri injury update before Everton clash

[ad_pod ]

West Ham United manager Manuel Pellegrini confirmed in his Everton pre-match press conference on Thursday that midfielder Samir Nasri is a doubt having picked up a minor knock, and Irons fans were quick to have their say on the update on Twitter.

The Chilean manager revealed that the 31-year-old is suffering from a slight calf issue that could rule him out against the Toffees, as he continues to struggle to prove that he should remain at the London Stadium beyond this season.

That is when the Frenchman’s contract is due to expire, but he has only played 245 minutes of Premier League football for them since signing at the end of 2018, and may well miss out again on Saturday evening.

Some Hammers supporters who have had their say on the former Arsenal and Manchester City man clearly rate him though with one saying he was “gutted” by the news, which is hardly surprising given some of the flashes of quality he has shown  – such as his assist against Huddersfield Town before the international break.

Others were already looking to his future though, with some saying they hope he would be better next term, while others are hoping he won’t be kept on if he continues to be injury-prone – he has already been sidelined by a calf problem previously.

Celtic fans react as Moyes declares interest in Parkhead job

[ad_pod ]

Loads of Celtic fans have been reacting to some comments from David Moyes, as the ex-Everton boss appeared to release a come-and-get-me plea.

Celtic are still yet to make a decision on who their permanent manager will be next season.

The Bhoys lost Brendan Rodgers to Premier League outfit Leicester City earlier this year, and of course handed the interim job to Neil Lennon.

Lennon has done a fantastic job steadying the ship and ensuring the Hoops will lock up their eighth consecutive league title, but most fans do not think he is the man to take the permanent position.

Moyes has already been linked with the Parkhead job and has just thrown his hat in the ring: “Club football would be my choice, but Scotland’s my country and I’m really passionate,” he told the BBC.

“I would always be interested (in the Celtic job), but Lenny’s done a brilliant job. He’s been there before and the job he’s doing at the moment would warrant being the Celtic manager. He’s doing a good job.”

While the 55 year-old showed his support for Lennon, he also informed the club that he is interested in the permanent position, so “Lenny” will likely take his compatriot’s comments with a pinch of salt.

Former Wigan & Fulham man, Jimmy Bullard recently showed that he’s still got it! Check out the video below…

Moyes managed a win percentage of 42 per cent over an 11-year spell with Everton, a number that rose to 52 per cent with Manchester United and plummeted with every club since, winning just eight of 43 games at Sunderland.

Plenty of fans are giving their verdict on the comments, and you can find some of the best Twitter reactions down below…

Oliver McBurnie is an option Southampton should seriously consider

Can Southampton beat the drop again this season? Well with some great options on the pitch and Ralph Hasenhuttl on the sideline, a lot of Saints fans think so. Finally, there’s something exciting going on at St. Mary’s, despite the current relegation struggle.

Yes, that sounds kind of silly, but when you consider some of the passive football played under Mark Hughes just to survive, seeing a manager come in and trust youth is so much more exciting.

While it’s been far from ideal this campaign, seeing as they spent a lot of money this summer to try and rectify how poor they were last season, which simply hasn’t worked. Recruitment needs to be seriously looked into this summer because the upcoming transfer window could be the biggest Southampton have had in years.

The need for top players this summer is more than its ever been and Southampton could revamp themselves by signing good players at the right price.

Again, like last season, goals have been a real issue for the Saints but this summer, that could be rectified with the signing of Swansea’s Oliver McBurnie.

McBurnie, (who is valued at £4.5 million on Transfermarkt) is a striker who has enjoyed a brilliant Championship campaign this season, despite Swansea’s lacklustre performances for the most part.

The Scottish international has been vital for the Swans, scoring 18 times in all competitions this season.

At the age of 22, McBurnie will have time to find his feet with a move to Southampton.

His rise up the footballing ladder has been quite remarkable and if Southampton were to recognise that by bidding for him, it would be a great testament to him. McBurnie is a talented player whether it’s winning headers, bringing his team-mates into play or simply doing what he does best – scoring goals.

If he applies himself and continues to give 100% effort in every game he plays, this move could have a very happy ending. Finally, goals could return to St. Mary’s.

It’s been far too long.

Southampton fans, does McBurnie sound good? If not, why’s that? Join the discussion by commenting below…

Stewart Donald must sign Lawrence Shankland

Sunderland will be desperate to ensure consistency from here on in until the end of the season after picking up another three points earlier on today.

The Black Cats still find themselves in the race for an automatic promotion place in League One, but it won’t be easy as there’re a number of teams fighting for limited places.

However, it appears as if the Wearside club already have one eye on the summer, as according to The Scottish Sun (via Shields Gazette), Sunderland continue to keep tabs on Lawrence Shankland.

Of course, Sunderland splashed out on Will Grigg last month but it’s safe to say that attacking reinforcements are still required, with the Northern Ireland international not quite hitting the heights just yet and Kaziah Sterling returning to Spurs in the summer. So, it would sense for the Black Cats to move in for Lawrence Shankland as his contract is set to expire in the summer, and he’s been hugely impressive this season with 30 goals and eight assists to his name.

But, the likes of Oldham Athletic, Swansea City, Nottingham Forest and Hull City are all interested in signing him, so it won’t be easy to lure him to Wearside. Therefore, Stewart Donald can make a big statement by pipping a number of Championship clubs to secure his services, and he’s one of Scotland’s most talented forwards so he could have a huge impact at the Stadium of Light.

What do you think Sunderland fans?

Newcastle should line up Robin Gosens to solve their left-back dilemma in the summer

Newcastle United remain up for sale with Mike Ashley looking to find a new owner for the Magpies.

Ashley has been vilified by the majority of the Newcastle fan base after years of underspending at St. James Park. Rafael Benitez has been vocal in his need for transfer funds and the Spaniard will be relieved to see the club break their transfer record to land Miguel Almiron in January. Staying in the Premier League will be vital to keeping the former Liverpool boss at the helm next season.

Magpies fans will be hoping the sale of the club will be passed in the summer and the new owner backs the ex-Madrid boss with some much-needed money. Plenty of areas in the squad is in need of improvement including left-back. Benitez landed Antonio Barreca on loan in January but a permanent solution is necessary.

One man Newcastle should look to sign is Atalanta star – Robin Gosens. Valued at £5.4m by Transfermarkt, the German joined the club in a cut-price deal from Heracles in the summer of 2017. Gosens has developed into a key player for the Serie A side, making 22 appearances in all competitions so far this season.

The 24-year-old has been in fine form during the current campaign, helping his side’s cause with one goal and two assists. Gosens is a fantastic defender, averaging an impressive 2.3 tackles and 1.3 interceptions in the league this season. He loves to get forward and help out the attack making him perfect for the system Benitez wants to implement on Tyneside (WhoScored).

The former Vitesse man is improving with every game and has all the attributes to be a success in England.

Manchester United’s brilliant defensive duo of Ferdinand and Vidic

In terms of central defensive partnerships, there has to be a balance, a yin and yang that works together in perfect harmony to ensure they are rarely breached by their opponents.

A ball-player and a covering hard man usually do the trick, and few partnerships have ever been quite so balanced as Manchester United’s noughties pairing of Nemanja Vidic and Rio Ferdinand.

Bought for a British record transfer fee, Ferdinand arrived at Manchester United with a growing reputation, but it was his ability on the ball that stood out the most. Sure, he was big and strong, his positional play was good, and potentially could have been a threat from corners, too – though didn’t score a lot of goals. But perhaps the most impressive thing about Ferdinand was that, for an English center-back, he wasn’t afraid of having possession of the ball.

Indeed, when United bought Ferdinand in 2002, their greatest success had come just three years earlier, when Alex Ferguson’s side won the treble. Jaap Stam and Ronny Johnsen was the pairing who took over from Gary Pallister and Steve Bruce, who had dominated the Premier League in the 1990s, but who had been unable to conquer Europe. It seemed as though the foreign pairing brought an extra dimension to United’s play by allowing the team to build from the back.

It was a similar partnership for what was to come later: Johnsen was skilled enough in possession to play as a defensive midfielder for United on occasion, whilst Stam is today remembered as one of the hardest centre-backs in footballing history – and not just in England.

Isolation Busters: The only quiz you need to cure your boredem

World Class score: 95% | Expert score: 80% | Veteran score: 65% | Intermediate score: 45% | Amateur score: 30% | Try Again: 5%

In 2006, United signed Vidic, and the partnership with Ferdinand seemed to continue the lineage that Stam and Johnsen set in 1999. Between them, the Serbian and the Englishman five Premier League titles, three League Cups and were also successful in Europe, winning one Champions League title, but losing twice in the final to a freakish Barcelona side managed by Pep Guardiola. In that sense, they were just unlucky to be playing at the same time as one of the best club sides in history.

In terms of trophies, though, it does stand out strangely that United did not manage to win an FA Cup in the years Ferdinand and Vidic played at centre-back. Neither had an FA Cup medal – Vidic because he didn’t play for a victorious United side, and Ferdinand as his ban for missing a drugs test in 2003 came during the only season when United won the cup whilst the former England man was still on the books. It’s the odd stat which stands out, because whilst some would argue that they were the best partnership in English football history, they never won the oldest competition in the world.

Perhaps, though, that just shows how Alex Ferguson’s side in the noughties had bigger fish to fry. With Ferdinand and Vidic, just like with Stam and Johnsen before them, the Champions League was not out of reach for the Old Trafford side. That they could compete with the glamorous teams around the continent not just for heart and industry, but for skill, too.

And for English football’s transition from an unfashionable league in the late 1980s and early 90s, to the powerhouse of the Premier League with teams capable of winning continental competitions, the ability to marry a silky centre-back in Ferdinand with one who could do the dirty work, like Vidic, was vital to the cause.

Leeds’ striker pursuit is addressed by Phil Hay

Phil Hay has spoken about Leeds United’s striker pursuit during a Q&A on The Athletic.

What did he say?

Leeds have been in need of another striker since Eddie Nketiah was recalled from his loan by Arsenal earlier in the January transfer window, leaving Patrick Bamford as their only real striker option.

The Englishman was slammed for his performance against Queens Park Rangers, which included a penalty miss during the 1-0 loss.

That performance will not have helped fans to maintain their patience as United look for another option, which was indicated by one of them asking Hay whether there are any updates on the pursuit of a frontman.

The Athletic journalist replied: “Still haven’t given up on Adams but they can’t stick that one out indefinitely. If it’s not happening it’s not happening – because something else has to.”

He then followed that up by stating: “Bielsa speaking now – saying no more news on signings yet.”

Vital business

Bamford had a total of six shots against QPR, with four of those going off target, while he also failed to complete any key passes or dribbles.

Despite those poor statistics, as well as the unconfident penalty kick that was saved by Liam Kelly, the 26-year-old completed the full 90 minutes.

It can be suggested that this shows how much Leeds need somebody to be brought in, as there was no alternative option for a player who was underperforming.

In addition to the pursuit of Adams, Leeds had been looking into signing Andre Gray on loan, but it has been reported by Football Insider that the interest has ended after Watford demanded £2m was paid, as well as the entirety of his £80,000-a-week wages.

Whether it is either of these two names or someone else, it is imperative that Leeds sign a striker before the window comes to an end.

Meanwhile, one player could have an unhappy start to life at Leeds.

Pellegrini could end up pulling off a very smart move if he brings Medel to West Ham

While West Ham manager Manuel Pellegrini will be able to take quite a few positives away from the first half of this season, one aspect that is likely to leave him frustrated is the amount of injuries his players have been picking up.

The likes of Andriy Yarmolenko and Jack Wilshere are currently sidelined, which could prompt the Chilean to dipping into the transfer market next month with compatriot Gary Medel just one name currently being linked with a move to the London Stadium.

The Breakdown

According to Turkish newspaper Takvim (via Sport Witness), the Besiktas midfielder is keen on joining West Ham once the transfer window opens in a deal that could make a lot of sense for the east London club.

Away from the impressive Declan Rice, whose contract expires next summer, the Hammers do not have a lot of options when it comes to defensive midfield making any potential addition of Medel or an individual in his mould a wise one.

With his tough tackling, strength and aggressiveness, the Chile international could be a very good alternative to Rice in that role shielding the back four.

In his previous stint in the Premier League with Cardiff City, Medel did not produce his best football. However, since then, he has gone on to perform much better at Inter Milan prior to his Besiktas transfer and could now be perfect for this current West Ham squad.

Toby Alderweireld was Tottenham’s unsung hero in narrow Cardiff victory

Tottenham supporters have been reasonably satisfied in recent times after seeing their team get back to winning ways with victory in the Premier League at the weekend.

Mauricio Pochettino’s men went into their meeting with lowly Cardiff City off the back of losing 4-2 to Barcelona in the Champions League on Wednesday night, thus leaving the North Londoners with no points from their first two group stage matches. Yet things are a lot better for Spurs in the Premier League at present as Eric Dier’s strike was enough to seal a narrow 1-0 win over Neil Warnock’s Bluebirds at Wembley on Saturday, a result which moved Pochettino’s team to within two points of top spot.

Thus, there have been many happy Tottenham fans up and down the country in recent times, several of whom have been praising the efforts of midfielder Dier in netting the all-important goal against the South Wales club at the weekend.

Yet it was far from a vintage display from Pochettino’s side at the national stadium at the weekend, with it arguable that defender Toby Alderweireld, who earns £80,000 a week as per Spotrac, was their unsung hero at Wembley on Saturday.

The centre back has forced his way back into Pochettino’s first team plans this term after struggling for regular football last time round, and he is certainly showing his worth in the early stages of this season, including an excellent display against Cardiff at the weekend.

The Belgium international had 81 touches of the ball and completed 61 of the 71 passes he attempted over the course of the 90 minutes, thus underlining that he was often in the game seeking to make an influence, helping Spurs to 76% possession during the match.

But in scoring after just eight minutes, there was always the concern that Cardiff could get themselves back into the match with just one attack, moment of brilliance, or Tottenham mistake, but Alderweireld helped to keep things very solid indeed at the back, including making a vital clearance off the line in the first half.

In fact, the 29-year-old won both of the tackles he attempted over the course of the match and made six clearances overall, and while he didn’t deal brilliantly aerially in winning just one of his three duels in the air, he more than made up for that by dominating on the ground.

Special mentions must also go to goalkeeper Hugo Lloris, who made a fine save late on to preserve the three points, and indeed Alderweireld’s centre back partner Davinson Sanchez, whose team-high 11 clearances also underlined his alertness and concentration in helping Pochettino’s team see the game out.

Yet it was the display of Belgian star Alderweireld which hasn’t really hit the headlines in recent times, which is why he was their unsung hero in victory over Warnock’s Cardiff on Saturday.
