Spurs should complete move for Youcef Atal

According to Bild, Tottenham boss Jose Mourinho is targeting Youcef Atal this summer.

What’s the word?

Despite the uncertainty surrounding football at the moment and when the league season will restart, it appears Premier League sides are already drawing up plans for the upcoming transfer window.

And according to German publication Bild, Spurs have got a wish-list of players who they are targeting, and Nice right-back Atal is one of the names on it.

The report adds that the likes of Marcel Sabitzer, Jamal Lewis, Eder Militao and Geoffrey Kondogbia also feature on the short-list of summer targets.

Ending Aurier’s misery

Since Serge Aurier made the switch to the Premier League to join Tottenham, his career in north London has just been characterised by high-profile mistakes and howlers.

His constant giving away of penalties means that even whilst he may enjoy a run of games where he does the good offensively, you just cannot rely on him to keep his head in a defensive sense.

That inconsistency will no doubt leave Jose Mourinho tearing his hair out, whose career has been characterised by teams like Inter and Chelsea who have been dominant defensively.

Whilst Youcef Atal can certainly provide an attacking punch, he once scored a hat-trick for Nice against Guingamp, he is also solid going back towards his own goal. As per Whoscored, he is averaging an impressive 1.8 tackles and 1.8 interceptions per game in Ligue 1 this season, and that consistency is exactly what Spurs could do with. It’s no surprise that his teammate at Algeria, Riyad Mahrez, said the 23-year-old has a “huge future” in football.

Someone like Aurier will always give opposition teams a chance that he could do something reckless in a game. The £22.5m-rated Atal just represents a far safer option.

Meanwhile, Spurs would pull off a major coup if they signed this Serie A warrior.

Liverpool fans slam Danny Murphy’s comments on Granit Xhaka

Granit Xhaka has become something of a scapegoat at Arsenal.

Watch Liverpool Videos With StreamFootball.tv Below

The Switzerland international has been at the club since 2016 and was even appointed captain by Unai Emery earlier this season, but he is far from popular with the supporters. He was even booed during one match – which subsequently led to him losing the captaincy after shouting an expletive at the stands in response.

He has been linked with a move to Hertha Berlin in the Bundesliga particularly, but former Reds midfielder Danny Murphy believes he would be a “hell of a player” at Anfield if he made the switch. He said: “If Xhaka was in Liverpool’s side with [Jordan] Henderson and Fabinho he would look a hell of a player, because he is technically good, a good passer, has a great shot on him and he has the ability with his great left foot to open you up.”

Call yourself a Liverpool expert? How much did each of these big-money January signings cost?

That is a bold claim, and one plenty of the club’s supporters do not appear to agree with. They were quick to slate their ex-player for his views.

Harsh words, especially in regards to a man who made 249 appearances for the club, but it is easy to understand their shock at these comments. It is hard to really think of a time when the 27-year-old has ever looked like a Liverpool player, especially now that they lead the table by 13 points.

Others were quick to pick up on his attitude as a reason why it wouldn’t work.

There are certainly questions over his temperament. The £27m-valued man – as per Transfermarkt – has picked up 10 yellow cards in two out of three campaigns since joining the Gunners, and that incident with the fans – which also saw him take off his shirt and throw it on the floor – shows that he struggles to control it at times.

Either way, this is a question to which we will likely never know the answer – and you get the feeling the supporters of the Anfield outfit are happy to leave it that way.

Elsewhere, Liverpool are said to be planning a move for this £13.5m-valued youngster.

West Ham need to look to younger players for strong future

According to The Sun, West Ham are interested in signing Man United right-back Antonio Valencia at the end of the season when his contract expires.

The Ecuador international has played over 300 games for The Red Devils, but it looks as though his time may be coming to an end.

However, while this may seem like a good addition, West Ham do not want to pollute their team with ageing players, and subsequently take a huge chunk out of their wage bill.

The Hammers already have Pablo Zabaleta at right-back, and while the Argentinian will be 34 come this summer, so will Valencia. If this was an option to replace Zabaleta, they would only be exchanging him with a man that is six months younger.

Of course, with an injury to Ryan Fredericks and a busy schedule, West Ham have looked pushed at times this season, as they do not want to overload the former Man City right-back. However, if they want to remedy this problem, they need to look at recruiting younger players.

If the club want to have any longevity and a legacy, they need young players that will be mainstays at the London Stadium. It is unclear how much time Zabaleta and Valencia have in their careers, but this seems to be a like for like replacement.

Although their playing styles may differ, it is the age that it most crucial in this circumstance, and it just makes Valencia seem like a waste.

Revealed: 51% of fans believe Eriksen is a better signing than Ozil

There has been little to split Arsenal and Tottenham so far this season, with the two North London clubs level on nine points after the opening five games of the campaign.

Spurs started in fine form by winning three in a row before losing to Watford and Liverpool either side of the international break, while the Gunners bounced back from consecutive defeats to start the season to beat West Ham, Cardiff City and Newcastle United.

[brid autoplay=”true” video=”291495″ player=”12034″ title=”Rafa’s Pub Facts Giroud Emulates Zidane & Rashford Emulates… Welbeck!”]

With such a fine line between the two clubs, the importance of the creativity from Christian Eriksen and Mesut Ozil could be key and we asked fans which of the pair was a better signing after the duo celebrated five years in the Premier League.

Eriksen finished with a narrow advantage of 51% of the votes, with Ozil narrowly behind on 49% – showing that there is also very little to split the two players in the views of the supporters that voted.

Ozil opened his account for the season by scoring the second goal against Newcastle on Saturday, while Eriksen has so far failed to transfer his goalscoring form on international duty to his club side.

Birmingham must forget Grabban chase and pursue Burnley outcast Wells instead

Nottingham Forest are set to beat Midlands rivals Birmingham City for the signing of former Aston Villa loanee Lewis Grabban, according to The Nottingham Post.

What’s the story, then?

The report says that both the Blues and Forest lodged bids for the man who spent the second half of last season on loan at Villa Park but it is the former European champions who have won the race are set to finalise a £6m deal.

He also banged in the goals for struggling Sunderland in the opening part of the previous campaign and Garry Monk wanted him to add firepower to the spluttering Birmingham attack.

He may have hoped that Grabban’s time in the West Midlands would convince him to return to the area – admittedly on the other side of the city – but it does not look to be the case.

How far will England get in Russia? Tell us now and win any World Cup shirt of your choice.

Wells is a better and cheaper alternative

With Grabban off the table and Birmingham beaten by a wealthier divisional rival, Monk must go back to the drawing board and one player who should stand out is Burnley outcast Nahki Wells.

The former Bradford man is a livewire and Birmingham’s attack sorely lacks pace and energy; plus, he also knows where the net is and is a good striker in the second tier.

Sean Dyche doesn’t sign players with a bad attitude so it is clear that he has the willingness to run all day that the Blues faithful will love – Monk should forget the Grabban chase and make Wells his top target.

£96m Mauro Icardi is the marquee signing Arsenal need most this summer

Inter Milan’s Mauro Icardi will be on plenty of big European clubs’ radars this summer, especially those in the Premier League – Arsenal being one of them.

The recent FA Cup winners have been on the hunt for a top striker for years, with no success thus far, and the man born in the same place as Lionel Messi should be top of their transfer list this summer if they want to show real ambition.

But why Icardi? Here’s why Wenger must break the bank for the Argentine this summer…

Affordable, even at £96m

Arsenal have reportedly given manager Arsene Wenger a £100m budget for the summer to improve the squad.

The north London outfit have been lacking a world class striker since Robin van Persie departed for Manchester United back in 2012 and whilst Alexis Sanchez can do a job, Wenger clearly prefers him on the wing.

Icardi would be the perfect finisher the Gunners have been lacking for many years and despite Inter Milan reportedly unwilling to sell for any less than £96m, that fee is not necessarily beyond Arsenal’s spending power.

It may need a world record fee to prise Icardi away from the San Siro, but Arsenal’s reluctance to spend big money on top talent over the last decade or so has arguably cost them a credible title challenge and that has to change fast if they’re to return to the Premier League’s summit.

A huge upgrade

Olivier Giroud is Arsenal’s recognised main striker; the France international played a part in 20 goals this season (16 goals, 4 assists). In comparison, Mauro Icardi was directly involved in 34 goals in total (26 goals, 8 assists) at Internazionale.

The difference in quality is clear and the numbers show that the 24-year-old would take the Gunners to the next level, providing they hold onto their best players. If so, they could be a huge force in the Premier League next season.

A born leader

Mauro Icardi became Inter Milan’s captain at the age of 23, his leadership qualities were rewarded by Roberto Mancini by giving the forward the armband in 2015.

Arsenal have lacked leadership since Patrick Vieira left the club in 2005 and they have been unsuccessful in their pursuit of a replacement in this department ever since. Bringing a player in to this current squad that can help galvanise the squad during important times could be the difference between failure and silverware.

The addition of Icardi would undoubtedly transform Arsenal in to serious title contenders.

A different animal

Inter Milan currently are predominantly a counter-attacking side and this has always been the case for Icardi at the San Siro. The striker is known for his magnificent conversion rate and clinical finishing in and around the 18-yard box.

Arsenal typically waste a lot of chances and the need for a goal scorer that doesn’t often give teams a second chance could make it a match made in heaven, at least on paper.

The possession based ‘total football’ Arsene Wenger strives means Icardi would have more opportunities in front of goal, which increases the chance of him hitting the back of the net.

Five January signings to push Man City towards the title

Manchester City are among the favourites to claim the 2016/17 Premier League title and with the squad of players currently at their disposal, who could doubt their credentials?

Pep Guardiola has been tasked with bringing the club a third Premier League title in six years but to do so, his City squad still needs some strengthening in January.

The Citizens have been worryingly weak defensively, so much so that the club have only kept two clean sheets all season. Statistics can sometimes be deceiving, however, as the team have the third best defence in the league – but it’s still not where Guardiola aspires to be.

For City to ensure a third Premier League crown comes their way, a few changes are required this January. Guardiola would have already identified key positions needing strengthening, but where do City fall short?

Here are FIVE signings the Citizens could make this winter to push on and claim the title…

Alex Sandro

According to the Daily Mirror, Manchester City were chasing Alex Sandro all summer before he opted for a move to Juventus.

The same report suggested Guardiola has earmarked Sandro as his long-term left-back, and what a signing he could be especially with Guardiola’s constant changing of the formation.

Sandro has been one of Juventus’ best performers this season, and unlike any of the current left-backs at City, the Brazilian can both attack and defend with equal quality.

Fabinho

Along with left-back, City’s biggest outstanding issue remains the uncertainty surround the ageing right-backs the club currently possesses.

For City to end their turbulent issues on the right side of defence, they must be considering a move for versatile, Brazil and Monaco star Fabinho.

The Sun have reported the interest is already present from the club and despite being cup-tied in the Champions League, Fabinho could be ideal for City’s long-term ambitions.

Virgil van Dijk

Britain Football Soccer – Southampton v Inter Milan – UEFA Europa League Group Stage – Group K – St Mary’s Stadium, Southampton, England – 3/11/16Southampton’s Virgil van Dijk celebrates scoring their first goal Reuters / Eddie KeoghLivepicEDITORIAL USE ONLY.

Reports recently suggested Guardiola is planning to strengthen the central defensive area of his City side following the long-term injury issues of Vincent Kompany.

The Daily Mail claim that City are planning a swoop for Southampton defender Virgil van Dijk, with the Dutch defender having been identified as a replacement for Kompany.

Van Dijk has been sensational for the Saints this campaign and a move to City may appeal to him while his stock is high.

Mahmoud Dahoud

Syrian-born German midfielder Mahmoud Dahoud has been linked with a move to the Citizens recently by German publication BILD.

Dahoud’s energy and passing range perfectly suit Guardiola’s system, and he could be the ideal replacement for Fernandinho.

City’s midfield is already impressive, but Dahoud would strengthen it even further.

Gianluigi Donnarumma

Football Soccer – AC Milan v Chelsea – International Champions Cup – US Bank Stadium, Minneapolis, United States of America – 16/17 – 3/8/16AC Milan’s Gianluigi DonnarummaAction Images via Reuters / Eric MillerEDITORIAL USE ONLY.

Question marks still surround the ability of Claudio Bravo, and with the Chile international touching 34, City must be considering their long-term options this winter.

AC Milan goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma has been likened to Gianluigi Buffon in recent months as the 17-year-old shot-stopper continues to display his credentials for the Serie A giants AC Milan despite his age.

If Bravo continues to disappoint for the Citizens, then a winter move for the most promising young goalkeeper in world football may not be a bad option.

Do Crystal Palace represent a must win game for Arsenal?

We may be just one down in a 38-fixture season, but after doing the most Arsenal thing ever by losing to West Ham on the opening day of the campaign, the Gunners’ Premier League clash with Crystal Palace on Sunday is practically a must-win game.

Of course, the north Londoners are the Premier League kings of final run-in flourishes. With their Champions League status at stake after incurring six losses in the first half of the season, Arsenal amassed 39 points in their final 15 fixtures of the 2012/13 campaign, only losing to Tottenham Hotspur, to clinch fourth spot. Likewise, last term, the Gunners rose from sixth place in February to third by the end of May, winning 10 of 14 and producing a level of form suggesting they’ve finally awoken from their decade of title-less dormancy.

But that’s precisely the point; if Arsenal are to be a genuine threat in this season’s title race, they need to be on song from the first game to the last. Dawdling out of the starting blocks has stunted their potential over the last few years and after the shock defeat to West Ham, they’re already playing catch-up. The Premier League’s opening weekend always throws up surprise results, so perhaps the Emirates affair can be forgiven. But anything less than a win on Sunday could leave Arsenal five points adrift of the division’s summit – or worst-case scenario, six points adrift and rock bottom of the table.

In my opinion, there’s no question Arsenal entered their opener with West Ham overconfident after a dominant pre-season. They won every game to produce an aggregate scoreline of 15-1, winning such un-coveted accolades as the Asia Trophy, the Community Shield and their self-invented Emirates Cup, and entered last Sunday under the assumption that they’d humiliate the Hammers in equally effortless fashion. But for all the insatiable talent in their starting XI, only Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain looked truly psychologically prepared for a new Premier League season. He alone wasn’t enough to prevent a 2-0 defeat.

[ffc-gal cat=”arsenal” no=”5″]

The good news is that I can’t seeing the Gunners making the same mistake twice. They were wrapped up in all the hype last weekend and fatally underestimated the opposition. But their squad is bursting with top draw talent – especially in midfield – and if they come anywhere close to matching the performance levels of last season against Palace, they’ll take at least a point.

The bad news, on the other hand, is that Palace have become one of the most formidable acts in the Premier League since Alan Pardew’s appointment in January and have only grown stronger through the course of the transfer window, completing deals for Bakary Sakho, Alex McCarthy, Connor Wickham, Patrick Bamford and arguably the Premier League’s biggest coup of the summer, former PSG playmaker Yohan Cabaye.

The Eagles are no longer simply a troublesome starting Xi. Pardew’s squad options put the rest of the division’s rank and file to shame, epitomised best by Yannick Bolasie – the talismanic counter-attacking force who netted a hat-trick against Sunderland last term –  and midfield-warrior-come-club-captain Mile Jedinak starting the season on the bench. Likewise, Selhurst Park is one of the toughest Premier League grounds to visit; a gritty, old-fashioned arena bursting at the seams with militant support and stands looming over the touchline to create a feeling of encirclement.

Perhaps most worryingly for Arsenal, however, Palace seem almost tailor-made to exploit their weaknesses. Dimitri Payet ran riot on the counter-attack at the Emirates and that’s exactly the kind team Palace are, with a well-organised, physical defence, scintillating power and pace on the break and the added layer of Cabaye’s quality at the heart of midfield.

They were also the Premier League’s most prolific from dead ball situations last season, equalling West Brom’s division-best 19 goals from set pieces, and demonstrated their deadliness again on Saturday as Damien Delaney converted a knock-down from an expertly-timed late Papa Soaure run. Another poorly placed defensive line at a free kick – like the one that committed Petr Cech to erroneously concede Arsenal’s first against West Ham – could have equal or greater consequences during the visit to Selhurst Park.

And in that sense, the Palace clash will give a vital insight into the Gunners’ title credentials; whether last week’s disappointment was a not uncommon opening day blooper or whether poor results to physical, counter-attacking sides will become a recurring theme of their season.

But more important to Arsenal than how a defeat may be perceived is simply the matter of getting some points on the board. Chelsea incurred just two defeats en route to the title last season (albeit losing another to West Brom after their champions status had been mathematically secured), yet Arsenal are already one down and three points behind pace-setters Manchester City.

It may be early doors, but another slip-up on Sunday could end the Gunners’ title bid before it’s even started. How many times have we seen that over the last ten years?

'Ups and downs' – Christian Pulisic delivers philosophical response after AC Milan somehow throw away point despite USMNT star's stunning late equalizer vs Monza

The Rossoneri went down 2-0 to Monza in the first-half of their Serie A clash on Sunday, only for Milan to storm back in the second-half, with Pulisic equalizing in the 88th minute. His stunning attempt saw his teammates erupt with applause and excitement, but it was short-lived.

A 52nd-minute red card to Luka Jovic already put Milan at a disadvantage in the match, and it came back to haunt them in stoppage-time, with Monza scoring not once, but twice to win 4-2.

The American winger dubbed Sunday one of the "Ups and downs of football" on his Instagram story.

Pulisic scored his seventh goal of the Serie A season on Sunday, and even though the Rossoneri threw away a point late, it was a promising bench cameo for the American. Stefano Pioli's decision to bench both the American and Rafael Leao has since not gone over well with fans on social media, but with Milan playing just three days before in the Europa League, his decision-making has validity.

Regardless, though, Pulisic's stunning left-footed goal should have meant more for the Rossoneri, who could have leapfrogged Juventus into second place in Serie A with a win. Instead, they stay in third.
