Modi tells of murder attempts

Lalit Modi, the former chairman of the IPL, has claimed that he survived three assassination attempts for refusing to fix matches in the tournament.Modi, who was sacked from the IPL in 2010 over allegations of corruption and money-laundering and now lives in London, has made the allegations in written by the British journalist Ed Hawkins. In Mumbai, in March 2009, Modi says: “There was a shoot-out outside my house and one guy got killed and one got picked up.”The other attempts, according to Modi, came in South Africa and Thailand and on each occasion he was warned that he was in danger by police or intelligence agencies.Modi alleges that spot-fixing, in which cricketers fix a particular element of the game but not the overall result, is widespread: “Spot-fixing is rife in the game. And I’m talking globally. It’s a Pandora’s box. It’s staring you straight in the face, but difficult to prove. Almost impossible to prove.”While he remained confident the IPL was clean he could not give 100% assurances and said there were times when he was concerned by certain incidents.”I think it was clean, but I could never, sitting here today, categorically tell you that we picked up everything for spot-fixing, and that goes for all games, not just IPL. We had to warn players from time to time. We found undesirable elements in the stadium and removed them. We found them touring with players or managers of players who were in touch with bookmakers and we removed them.”

The PCB has ‘welcomed’ the step taken by the BCCI to include a team from Pakistan in Champions League T20 this year. This could lead to the revival of cricketing ties between the two countries, Subhan Ahmed, the PCB’s chief operating officer said.”It is indeed good news for Pakistan, and we welcome India’s positive move,” Ahmed told ESPNcricinfo. “We have been discussing the matter, how to revive our cricketing ties with each other, for many months. This is the significant move in that direction.”For us it isn’t a surprising move, but a much awaited one, as we have been holding discussions over the last two months. They [the BCCI] want to take gradual steps, and once things go successfully in the Champions League we can definitely move forward with our junior and senior teams.”Ahmed’s reaction comes in the wake of the BCCI’s announcement on Saturday that it would inform the tournament’s governing council that it had no objection to the participation of a team from Pakistan. The PCB had been pushing for the inclusion of a side from Pakistan, the only major Test-playing nation to not have had teams in either the qualifiers or the main round of the CLT20 since its inception. Sialkot were invited to the inaugural edition of the tournament towards the end of 2008, but it was put off after the terror attacks in Mumbai in November that year. Those attacks strained political relations between India and Pakistan and, subsequently, the cricketing ties between the BCCI and the PCB. India and Pakistan have severed bilateral ties since, and Pakistan players – with the exception of Azhar Mahmood in the ongoing edition – have not been a part of the IPL.Ahmed said that both cricketing and diplomatic channels were used to ease the tension. “The government has always been very supportive and has been playing its role when it needed,” he said. “I think playing each other is always beneficial for both countries. We have laid out several proposals to revive the cricketing ties and the previous time we met, during the ICC’s [exectuive board] meeting, we had a productive meet up [on the side], where several possibilities were discussed.”The Sialkot Regional Cricket Association (SRCA) is also pleased that their team, which is the domestic Twenty20 champion, is likely to play in the cash-rich league. “We were looking for the opportunity, as we have a team that has the calibre to compete in the Champions League,” Zulfiqar Malik, SRCA President, told ESPNcricinfo. “It [ensuring participation] wasn’t working out, but now things appear to be coming together. I appreciate India’s move, which will ultimately help both countries to build a good relationship.”The Sialkot captain, Shoaib Malik, said this could be a chance for players from Pakistan to showcase their talent. “It is a relief to hear that finally we will get a chance to compete with the best teams in the Champions League,” Malik said. “The ice has finally been broken. It is a good opportunity for us to convince the Indian people about the great talent in Pakistan cricket.”

New Zealand need to prioritise Tests – Crowe

Martin Crowe, the former New Zealand captain, has said New Zealand Cricket needs to prioritise Tests by changing the schedule of first-class matches in the country. New Zealand play their next Test in late January and the next fixture in the Plunket Shield, the country’s first-class competition, is not until February 17. In the interim there is a spate of limited-overs matches, geared to draw crowds during the holiday season.”If you want to play good Test cricket, like we did [in Hobart], then schedule everything around first-class cricket,” Crowe told the . “You can still fit in the commercial competitions that bring in the money, but we’ve got a problem when our next first-class match in this country is the Test in late January.”Go figure, it just doesn’t stack up for me.”New Zealand beat Australia by seven runs in Hobart to level the Test series 1-1 earlier this month. It was their first Test win against Australia since 1993, and their first in Australia since 1985. Crowe said New Zealand had the “bones” to be a good Test-playing unit but that much more needed to be done on the domestic front. “There’s the bones there to be very good, but it depends what our priorities are because I don’t sense we prioritise Test cricket; certainly our domestic schedule doesn’t suggest that.”That’s where Australia have dropped the ball in recent years, with their emphasis on Twenty20, just like we have.”

Win boosts Surrey's promotion bid

Surrey gave their promotion hopes a large boost as they bowled Essex out for 239 to claim victory by 109 runs in their Division Two clash at Chelmsford

10-Sep-2011
ScorecardSurrey gave their promotion hopes a large boost as they bowled Essex out for 239 to claim victory by 109 runs in their Division Two clash at Chelmsford. Essex resumed overnight at 142 for 5 chasing 349, and the visitors completed their third successive win before lunch to move within one point of second-placed Northants, each county having only one match remaining. But it was not all plain sailing for Surrey, with Graham Napier causing a few palpitations as he smashed 80 from 64 balls. However, any realistic hopes that Essex may have entertained of reaching their victory target of 349 disappeared in the second over of the day. Ryan tenDoeschate despatched the first ball he received from paceman Tim Linley to the square leg boundary but the third trapped him lbw. That paved the way for Napier and initially he adopted a cautious approach in company with captain James Foster. The pair added 34 in nine overs but once Foster’s obdurate innings of 29 from 87 deliveries was ended by Chris Jordan, Napier really cut loose. He took a particular liking to seamer Stuart Meaker as he plundered 41 runs in a spell of 16 deliveries he sent down. These included two successive sixes with deliberately executed shots over third man and a mighty blow over long-on. Napier, who struck a career-best 196 when the counties met earlier in the season, also cleared the ropes against Jordan before the paceman gained his revenge.Attempting another big hit, he skied to extra cover where Mark Ramprakash took a fine running catch. Napier also gathered 11 fours and deservedly walked off to a standing ovation. Jordan, who had earlier got rid of David Masters, was to bring the Essex innings to an end with his next delivery.Again Ramprakash provided a helping hand with another fine catch, this time in the gully to get rid of Tom Craddock, who did not contribute a run to a stand of 53 with Napier. Jordan will certainly remember this match, from which Surrey claimed 22 points. After posting a career-best 71 in the first innings and bettering it with an undefeated 79 in the second, he emerged with 4 for 57 – again a personal best.Essex were left to settle for three points, after having two deducted for a slow over rate.

Cricket South Africa (CSA) is likely to announce the new national coach on June 6. A specially appointed CSA panel met the candidates in Johannesburg on Monday and will discuss the appointment on Tuesday. The interview committee includes CSA chief executive Gerald Majola, outgoing coach Corrie van Zyl, cricket committee chairperson Andy O’Connor, players’ association representative Boeta Dippenaar, convenor of selectors Andrew Hudson and Professor Johann Coetzee, a human development expert. “The panel will meet today [Tuesday] to have a discussion around the interviews that were conducted,” a source told ESPNCricinfo.CSA has not revealed the names on the shortlist, which it had initially said consisted of six names. The only clues as to who might be in the running came from the interview venue, a hotel in the upmarket suburb of Sandton. Gary Kirsten, widely considered to be the frontrunner for the job, and former Pakistan coach Richard Pybus were seen there. According to the source, all interviews were conducted in person.Kirsten has just returned from a two-year stint in India, during which India climbed to the top of the Test rankings, and culminated in the winning of the World Cup. He has indicated that he would like to spend more time with his family in South Africa and with a third child due in November, it remains to be seen how much travel Kirsten would be willing to do.Pybus is currently in charge of the Cape Town based Cobras franchise and was previously involved with the Titans. He has been involved with South African cricket since 2003 and is widely acclaimed for his innovative and creative coaching methods.Duncan Fletcher and John Buchanan, who were believed to be on the shortlist, accepted positions in India and New Zealand respectively, before the interview process began. Others reportedly in contention for the job are Tom Moody, Stephen Fleming and Vincent Barnes.

Batting long is Sehwag's aim

As if Virender Sehwag’s batting strike-rate of 102 over a decade in one-day cricket wasn’t enough to frighten bowlers, he has now set his sights on batting long during the World Cup. During his astonishing double-century against Ajantha Mendis and Muttiah Muralitharan in the Galle Test in 2008, Sehwag carried his bat but he is yet to bat out the full quota of overs in one-dayers, something he hopes to achieve.”I think I never played 50 overs in one-day cricket, maximum I faced is 42-44 overs,” a relaxed Sehwag said in Bangalore. “This time I’ll try to bat 50 overs if I can. I have been trying for 10 years, I’m still trying.” Emulating Sachin Tendulkar, who made the first and only double-century so far in the format when he played out 50 overs against South Africa last year, wasn’t a target for Sehwag though. “Sachin has played 50 overs many times, not just once, but he could make 200 only once because it is not easy to make 200 in a one-dayer.”Nearly a third of Sehwag’s innings have been single-digit efforts, a proportion he aims to reduce with a more measured approach early in the innings. “I have Yuvraj [Singh], MS Dhoni, [Suresh] Raina, [Virat] Kohli and Yusuf [Pathan] in the middle order, so I can go after the bowling straight from the first ball, but nowadays I’m a giving a little bit of respect for first 4-5 overs,” he said. “Then I can take on the bowlers to make sure I give a good start so even if I get out the middle order can take their time and then go after the bowling.”This will be the first World Cup since Twenty20 become a big-money phenomenon, and Sehwag says the rise of cricket’s newest format will mean teams batting first will have to set bigger targets to feel safe. “If you get a good batting track, 320 or 300 will be a par score in the World Cup,” he said. “IPL changed a lot of batsmen’s mindsets, because batsmen now think we can chase 10 run an over anytime. Before teams thought you have lost the game if they needed to chase 10 an over, but now with the power-hitters in the team, they will chase it and that will be very exciting to see in the World Cup”Injuries and the team management’s decision to rest him from some recent series has meant Sehwag goes into the World Cup not having played a one-dayer in more than five months. He missed the recent series against South Africa due to a shoulder problem, and though he is satisfied with his recovery, he is yet to start bowling. “I’m taking regular treatment, so hopefully it will be fine when the match comes,” he said. “I don’t want to bowl in the nets and get injured again, so when I feel my shoulder is better I can start bowling.”Shoulder trouble ruled Sehwag out of the past three global ICC tournaments – the Champions Trophy in 2009, and the previous two World Twenty20s – and India have had early exits in each of those, despite entering as title contenders. This World Cup, too, India are one of the front-runners. What lessons has the team learnt from past failures? “The only thing we learnt is that we are not favourites.”
