Liverpool board shake up could prove a positive move

Liverpool Football Club have been living off their past glories for far too long. The most successful club in the history of English football, with 18 league titles and five European Cups, have now failed to win the league for 20 years. The club have struggled to emerge from the shadow of their own wonderful achievements throughout the ‘70s and ‘80s, failing to make an impact in the modern, vibrant setting of the Premier League. Following a dismal seventh placed finish last term, the club have now turned to well-travelled manager Roy Hodgson in an attempt to bring back the glory days to Anfield.

Hodgson is not fearful of the past and believes the club’s illustrious history should be embraced and harnessed to help build a better future for Liverpool. The manager’s latest plan to awaken the sleeping giant of the North West, following a summer of change, is to reconnect with the club’s roots and the ethos brought to the club under the management of Bill Shankly and Bob Paisley. The new Reds manager is enthusiastic regarding plans to install Kop legends Alan Hansen and Kenny Dalglish as fully-fledged members of the club’s board in a proposed shake up behind the scenes at Anfield. Hansen and Dalglish won virtually every honour at the club playing under both Paisley and Joe Fagan from 1977 and such a decision would be a popular one with supporters.

Londoner Hodgson certainly believes the duo can have a positive influence on the club and is keen to revive the famed Liverpool tradition of old which dates back to the start of Shankly’s reign at Anfield in 1959. Shankly, a founding member of the legendary boot room, instilled a concept known as ‘the Liverpool way’ into the club’s philosophy, helping shape the club’s fortunes for years to come. Liverpool’s unwritten code of conduct protected the club’s inner sanctum and has been continually cited as a major influence behind the club’s success throughout the ‘70s and ‘80s. This was somewhat lost under the reigns of Frenchman Gerard Houllier and, in particular, former Valencia coach Rafael Benitez who often used the media as an intermediate for airing his grievances with the club’s owners. This now looks set to be rejuvenated under Hodgson.

Sadly the boot room tradition, which looked to train and promote former players and coaches from within, was lost following Roy Evans’ departure as the club’s manager in 1998. Remnants of the boot room still remain with Dalglish and  Sammy Lee still at the club today, but its main components have largely been lost. Hodgson wants to strengthen the clubs connections with the boot room by offering Dalglish an enhanced role as head of football development and Hansen a major say in the boardroom.

The former Fulham boss was keen to emphasise the importance of Kop idol Dalglish in his attempts to rebuild the once great club, telling the BBC shortly after his arrival:

“When you have a resource like Ken it’s best to use it properly,” commented Hodgson.

“I believe Ken can make the perfect bridge, with his football knowledge between the academy and the training ground, and we should never forget the very important role he will always do as an ambassador. There are so many roles that man can play to help Liverpool FC and that will outlive my tenure at the club. There’s no question about that.”

Of course a club with Liverpool’s history should not attempt to cut all ties with its past and offering Dalglish and Hansen a role in a new era for Liverpool is a positive move by the club. Dalglish, the last man to bring the league title back to Anfield, is a living Liverpool legend and the club’s ability to keep him after he missed out on the manager’s job is a major bonus for The Reds. Just as Sir Bobby Charlton is a great ambassador for Manchester United, Dalglish can perform a similar role on Merseyside for the next 15 years or more. Former centre-back Hansen’s insight and knowledge of the club would make him an ideal appointment. The Scotsman, who lifted eight domestic titles and three European cups during his glittering Anfield career, is almost synonymous with Liverpool and would be a welcome appointment, although issues remain over his contract with Match of the Day.

Kopites will be fully aware of chairman Martin Broughton’s attempts at a PR exercise following the disastrous tenure of American owners Tom Hicks and George Gillett. Broughton is keen to re-establish Liverpool’s traditional image and having Hansen and Dalglish on board would make it easier for him to do this. Reds fans however will be as keen as the club’s chairman to forget the warring which has marred the club’s iconic image over the past two years and would welcome an increased role for Dalglish and Hansen with open arms.

Roy’s ‘future vision’ gives Liverpool every chance

Michael Carrick happy to bide Manchester United time

Midfielder Michael Carrick is happy to bide his time despite finding himself out of the Manchester United side during the opening weeks of the new season.

Carrick, 29, has started both United's two opening Premier League games on the substitute's bench.

The England international also found himself on the bench during the closing weeks of the last campaign.

However, despite appearing to have slipped down the Old Trafford pecking order, the former Tottenham and West Ham United midfielder is not overly concerned.

He told the Manchester Evening News:"It's obviously frustrating not playing football, but it's a long season and I'm well aware of how strong a squad we've got.

"It's about being patient and trying to force my way back into the team. The manager trusts the squad he's got and we trust each other.

"It's important that we have the experienced players in the squad who have done it all before but that doesn't count for an awful lot going into the new season.

Stoke City set to receive Ricardo Fuller boost

Stoke City hope to have Ricardo Fuller back in action sooner rather than later, after initial tests confirmed that the striker did not suffer a broken shoulder in the 2-1 win at Newcastle United.

Fuller did sustain a dislocated right shoulder, but the Potters now hope that the damage to ligaments will be minor and that the talented frontman could be back in action in around a fortnight.

Manager Tony Pulis had said before learning of the likely positive prognosis:"We're just keeping our fingers crossed that they will be able to just pop back it in.

"When Ric dislocated his shoulder a couple of seasons ago he was only out for ten days, so we're hoping that will be the case again.

"If he is out for any longer, then it will be a massive blow to us because he is a game changer.

Steven Gerrard and Fernando Torres miss Napoli game

Liverpool boss Roy Hodgson has left both Steven Gerrard and Fernando Torres out of his squad for Thursday's Europa League clash against Napoli.

The former Fulham manager has also decided to omit Raul Meireles and Lucas from his 20-man squad as he attempts to juggle his team with Sunday's Premier League clash with Blackburn Rovers in mind.

Glen Johnson and Daniel Agger are not available for selection, but Christian Poulsen returns to the squad after missing Sunday's Merseyside derby defeat to Everton.

Meanwhile, Hodgson insists his players are in a good frame of mind despite their desperate start to the campaign, saying:"The players are very upbeat.

"The training session was very good – the intensity and concentration was as good as one would wish to see at any stage in the season. That, in itself, is very commendable when you are down.

"You can't deny that we are down. We are down because we aren't doing what we want to do, because the fans are angry and disappointed in us. We are down because we are at a great club and should be doing better.

"Unfortunately the reason we aren't doing better is down to a number of factors. But it was great that we all rose above it and got out there and started playing again. Now we badly need that result or run of results that will at least take us into a safer position."Subscribe to Football FanCast News Headlines by Email

Arsene Wenger challenges Jay Emmanuel-Thomas

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger has challenged young striker Jay Emmanuel-Thomas to win a place in the first team in the coming weeks.

With a Carling Cup test at Newcastle United on Wednesday, the Gunners boss is likely to offer the promising frontman the opportunity to showcase his talents in the north east.

A place in the quarter-finals is up for grabs and the Frenchman wants Emmanuel-Thomas to take the opportunity should it arise against their Premier League rivals.

"Jay is knocking very hard on my door – with two hands. He has outstanding quality," Wenger told Arsenal TV Online.

"He has outstanding qualities, he has the build you dream to have. It is down to how far he wants to go because he has big potential.

"He works very hard to get his fitness right. When his fitness is right, Jay will be not only a good player, but a great player.

Chelsea to bounce back to the top?

The terms losing matches, defeat and disarray aren’t those that you would have associated with Chelsea back in September but today is another story. After the departure of Ray Wilkins Chelsea fell apart, it might have had nothing to do with the axe but to the assuming fan it looked that way. After winning just one of their last six games and falling down to fourth in the table who knows what will happen over the festive period.

The sacking of Ray Wilkins and the affect it has had on the team has not been spoken about much by the players but Florent Malouda spoke to Sky Sports about the ‘strange’ decision this week. He said: “Ray was close to the players and in training he was involved in the animation of the sessions. It was a big strain to see him leave like this and we were not prepared for that.

“I first heard what had happened in the afternoon when it was announced. It was a shock. What we need is stability and obviously the players cannot react to this decision. We can’t use it as an excuse and the fans do not want excuses for why we have not been winning but good performances to turn it around.”

Several of Chelsea’s star players have been absent of late, with injuries to John Terry and Frank Lampard and the suspension of Michael Essien, which too could have accounted for Chelsea’s fall in form. Without these players Chelsea seem to have lost their spark and the Premier League title seems to be falling from their grasp. In saying all this they’re all back now. Lampard has been missing since August and his return is bound to boost morale in camp. The midfielder has been speaking to The Daily Telegraph this week, and he believes Chelsea can still win the title.

Lampard said: “Injuries have been tough on us and some months tough on us. But with the spirit and ability we have got in our team if we play like that, I have confidence we can do it. It is very tough. We will have to fight on a few fronts. Man City are there now, Arsenal, Man United, as we know. Teams like Tottenham are pushing from behind. So we have to be at our best, but if we are at our best I think we can win it.”

With Chelsea’s slide in performance also comes rumours regarding manager Carlo Ancelotti. Italian newspaper Impero Romanista claimed that Ancelotti has been deemed a possible candidate to takeover as manager of Roma. Questioning Ancelotti’s commitment can only be detrimental to Chelsea’s season so the team need to look past the rumours and the reports and focus on performing on the pitch. With tough games against Manchester United and Arsenal ahead Chelsea will need to step up if they want to be counted in the title race.

FIVE things we learnt from Newcastle this afternoon

It was a case of déjà vu for Newcastle at St James’ Park today as for the second time in a week Alan Pardew’s men were denied all three points by an injury time equaliser. Last week it was Sunderland’s Asamoah Gyan who spoiled the party, and Tottenham’s Aaron Lennon took on that role today as Newcastle drew 1-1 with Spurs.

After a fairly tight first half, Newcastle went ahead just before the hour mark as Fabricio Coloccini chested down a Danny Guthrie cross-field pass and slammed it into the back of the net. Tottenham had a fair amount of possession without creating a great deal, and first Peter Lovenkrands, then Shola Ameobi and finally Nile Ranger had a chance to make it 2-0, before the inevitable happened and Lennon went down the other end in stoppage time to equalise.

So what were the FIVE things we learnt about Newcastle today?

FA Cup wrap: Chelsea held, Crawley run continues

Reigning champions Chelsea were forced to an FA Cup fourth-round replay after being held to a 1-1 draw by Everton on Saturday.

At a sunny Goodison Park, a tight first half saw scores remain deadlocked before David Moyes’ side came out firing in the second period.

Former Manchester United striker Louis Saha gave the hosts a deserved lead after 62 minutes and they could have gone two in front moments later, but Michael Essien produced a superb block to keep Everton’s lead at just one goal.

Essien’s intervention proved crucial as Chelsea quickly re-grouped and snared a 75th minute equaliser, with Salomon Kalou coming off the bench to keep his side’s FA Cup hopes alive.

Brazilian midfielder Ramires hit the post with a stunning shot from distance in the dying stages, but Everton clung on for a replay at Stamford Bridge, which will cause further congestion in Chelsea’s fixture as they look to mount a title push.

Crawley Town became the first non-league side to reach the fifth round in 17 years after a 1-0 away win at League Two side Torquay.

After a victory over Championship outfit Derby County in the fourth round, Matthew Tubbs kept Crawley’s fairytale run alive with a 39th minute goal, his eighth strike in just seven games.

When Torquay striker Chris Zebroski was given a second yellow card in as many minutes and sent off, Tubbs had the chance to double Crawley’s lead from the penalty spot.

But the striker, who has scored 23 goals in 22 Conference matches for his club this season, missed his penalty and kept the match alive.

Despite Crawley defender Dean Howell’s 83rd minute sending off, Torquay could not muster a late equaliser as 1200 travelling fans celebrated a famous victory.

In other games, Robert Pires was on the scoresheet as Aston Villa defeated Blackburn Rovers 3-1, while in the day’s other all-Premier League tie Bolton and Wigan played out a goalless draw at the Reebok Stadium.

Kevin Phillips struck the winner as Birmingham came from two goals down to defeat Coventry City 3-2, while a Chris Eagles double helped Burnley to a 3-1 home win over League Two strugglers Burton Albion.

League One leaders Brighton and Hove Albion surprised Championship high-flyers Watford with a 1-0 away win, while another League One side caused an upset with Leyton Orient toppling Swansea 2-1 thanks to Alan Tate’s 88th minute own goal.

Shane Long scored with just three minutes remaining to give Reading a 2-1 away win at Stevenage and Clinton Morrison scored two second-half penalties in Sheffield Wednesday’s come-from-behind 4-1 win over Hereford United.
