Aston Villa could ease Zaniolo performance woes with £17m January target

Aston Villa have had an electrifying start to the 2023/24 campaign, as Unai Emery continues to inject added quality into his squad at Villa Park.

The Spaniard took just a year ago, and Villa haven’t looked back, highlighted by them picking up where they left off last season in their 7th-place finish in the Premier League.

From performing in Europe to sitting a point outside of the top four in the league table, the Villans are building something special with Emery, however, reports suggest that the former Arsenal boss is far from finished in the market.

Latest Aston Villa transfer news

As the January window approaches, Villa have been linked with a host of players, particularly ones that could bolster the Midlands side’s options in the final third.

One name that has been mentioned by media in Portugal, relayed by Sport Witness, is former Wolves forward Pedro Goncalves, who was prolific for Sporting CP last season by recording 35 goal contributions in 51 appearances.

Another potential acquisition in the winter window is Emery’s former talent at Arsenal, Dani Ceballos, who was linked to the Villans in the summer.

Real Madrid midfielder Dani Ceballos.

A report by DefensaCentral has claimed that Villa may be willing to offer between €15m (£13m) and €18m (£16m) for his services, as he struggles to secure game time at Real Madrid.

In other news, Ceballos is not the only target for Emery from the Bernabeu, as a report from Sport, relayed by BirminghamLive, explains that Villa are one of the clubs interested in Brahim Diaz.

The 24-year-old playmaker is said to be valued at €20m (£17m) by Los Blancos, who according to Sport, would be “happy” to sell the sporadic talent in the coming window.

Brahim Diaz could be the perfect Nicolo Zaniolo replacement

Once lauded as a “lethal” asset by journalist Maxi Angelo, Diaz could arrive at Villa already installed with the critical trait of having experience in playing in England.

The Spaniard is a product of Manchester City’s academy, where he developed for five years before returning to his homeland to sign for Madrid.

The versatile forward made 15 senior appearances for City under Pep Guardiola, with his insight into the game in England making him a potentially strong target for Villa to chase.

Brahim Diaz

In Zaniolo, Emery equipped his side with an equally versatile spark to fill the void left by Emiliano Buendia’s injury, however, the Italian has had a slow start to life in the Midlands, in an area that Diaz could thrive in.

The Malaga-born gem, who has been on loan at AC Milan for the past three seasons, is an expert creator, as portrayed by his seven assists and 11 big chances created in Serie A in the 2022/23 campaign, as well as averaging 1.2 key passes per game, via Sofascore.

In 2019 during a La Liga contest, journalist Hasan Karim praised Diaz as being a presence that was “lighting up” the game, with one of his most notable strengths being his ball-carrying ability, which is reinforced by his 1.2 successful dribbles per game last term.

Zaniolo has averaged only 0.7 key passes per game for Villa in the Premier League so far, as well as maintaining a frail pass completion rate of 73%, suggesting that he is yet to find his feet in England after his summer move.

In acquiring the Real Madrid ace, Emery could bolster his team with a presence to compete with Zaniolo, in a player that is statistically comparable to Premier League wizard, James Maddison, telling of his calibre, via FBref.

Only time will tell if the Villans decide to stick or twist with Zaniolo, however, there would be no harm in exploring the possibility of signing Diaz in January, who could provide more creativity in an attacking midfield position, as shown by his aforementioned statistics.

GOAL's ideal USMNT 2024 Copa America squad: Haji Wright makes the cut as Josh Sargent and Brenden Aaronson miss out

With just two pre-tournament friendlies to go before the hosts kick-off vs Bolivia on June 23, GOAL's staff got together to pick our 23-man roster

Following their CONCACAF Nations League triumph, the USMNT now have their eyes set on the 2024 Copa America. The last time they appeared in the competition was 2016, where they made a heroic semifinal run, and now they're back in search of glory on home soil.

Gregg Berhalter now has just two friendlies on the eve of the tournament, against Colombia and Brazil, to prepare for the team's tournament opener against Bolivia on June 23, and so any final decisions when it comes to his 23-man squad will have to largely be made based on club performances.

So who should be on that final roster, and who will have to be left at home at what is a crucial juncture on the road to the 2026 World Cup? Here at GOAL we put our best USMNT minds together to select what we believe should be Berhalter's final Copa America squad.

Check out our selections below, and let us know how right – or wrong – we were in the comments section at the end…

Despite losing his starting spot at Nottingham Forest, Matt Turner remains the USMNT's undisputed No.1, and we see no issue with him being Berhalter's go-to starter this summer.

Behind him, we've gone for Ethan Horvath, who is currently impressing during a loan spell at Cardiff City, and Inter Miami's Drake Callender.

GOAL's selection: Drake Callender, Ethan Horvath, Matt Turner.

Berhalter's starting fullbacks are pretty locked in, too with Sergino Dest and Antonee Robinson both enjoying excellent seasons for PSV and Fulham, respectively.

In terms of their back-ups, our selection committee stuck with Joe Scally and Kristoffer Lund, with Scally in particular earning his spot due to his versatility in being able to play on either flank.

GOAL's selection: Sergino Dest, Kristoffer Lund, Antonee Robinson, Joe Scally.

GettyCenterbacks

We were happy with what we saw from Tim Ream and Chris Richards in the Nations League final, and so Berhalter's favored centerback duo should be locked in for selection this summer.

Competition for who provides cover, though, is intense. In the end, we opted for FC Cincinnati's Miles Robinson, who started the Nations League semifinal win over Jamaica, and Celtic's Cameron Carter-Vickers. The latter might be seen as a risk by some given Carter-Vickers' recent injury history, but if fit, he deserves his place.

It remains to be seen whether Berhalter sticks with the MMA midfield of Weston McKennie, Yunus Musah and Tyler Adams this summer following its success at the 2022 World Cup, but there's no doubt that the trio are deserving of their places in the squad.

La Liga duo Luca de la Torre and Johnny Cardoso, meanwhile, have forced their way into the reckoning with their performances in Spain, and will provide excellent cover off the bench.

Portuguese superstar Ronaldo has grown accustomed to seeing players mimic his famous celebration that involves leaping into the air, spinning and roaring in delight. That routine has become so popular that it is no longer reserved solely for football fixtures – with NFL, basketball and rugby stars among those to get in on the act.

Vinicius, who now occupies the legendary No.7 shirt at Santiago Bernabeu that was once worn with such distinction by Ronaldo, has performed the ‘Siuuuu’ show at times. He is, however, aware that CR7 boasts other celebrations within his collection.

With that in mind, and having hit the back of the net for Real in the second leg of their Champions League last-16 encounter with RB Leipzig, the Brazil international took to emulating another of Ronaldo’s famous routines – which sees him take to sitting on the advertising hoardings.

Aston Villa: Emery and Monchi now eyeing move to sign "incredible" player

Aston Villa now have their sights set on bringing a talented new attacker to Villa Park following his excellent start to the 2023/24 campaign, according to reports.

What's the latest news involving Aston Villa?

Pundit Natasha Dowie has offered Aston Villa striker Ollie Watkins heavy praise following the England international's trio of strikes in the Villans' 6-1 annihilation of Brighton & Hove Albion last weekend.

Dowie stated via BBC Sport: "He should have had four, and actually I think he was quite frustrated to not get four. Everything about his game was impressive. He's a real threat, he has everything in my opinion. He's pacy, he can stretch the play, he's also strong and can be that hold up player, and obviously Gareth Southgate was there to watch and that's a good impression. Four goals and three assists now and the assists side is important. A brilliant, brilliant performance from him."

Cited via Tribal Football meanwhile, Aston Villa boss Unai Emery has complemented summer signing Nicolo Zaniolo's willingness to adapt and versatility following his move to the West Midlands, saying in the aftermath of the Brighton triumph: "Zaniolo as a person is very easy to talk with him, to work with him. His behavior and commitment with us from the first day was very good. His adaptation is going very well, and then he is playing well."

Aston Villa will next face HSK Zrinjski Mostar in the second matchday of their Europa League campaign and they will be hoping to put three points on the board to enter contention to qualify for the knockout phase.

In other news, Aston Villa are looking to enact further consultation with supporters over the design of their new club crest, which will be active on shirts at all levels from the beginning of the 2024/25 campaign.

Who are Aston Villa linked with?

According to 90min, Aston Villa have checked in on the performances of Wolverhampton Wanderers winger Pedro Neto, who has also attracted interest from Premier League high-flyers Arsenal and La Liga giants Atletico Madrid.

Aston Villa boss Emery and sporting director Monchi look to already be putting the work in on potential January additions and are keen to strengthen their options in attack; however, the threat of the Saudi Pro League swooping for Neto is another factor they will need to take into consideration regarding any potential swoop.

Pedro Neto and Luke Shaw

Neto has made a blistering start to life this campaign, racking up one goal and four assists in seven appearances across all competitions for the Old Gold, as per Transfermarkt.

Proving to be an enormously important attacking outlet for Wolves, Neto has averaged 1.6 shots, 2.6 key passes and 2.3 completed dribbles in the Premier League this term, according to WhoScored.

In the English top-flight, the Portugal international, who was labelled "incredible" by Gary O'Neil after Wolves' 1-1 draw away to Luton last month, has successfully carried out 28 shot-creating actions in total within 2023/24, with five of them directly leading to goals, as shown on FBRef.

Aston Villa already have a plethora of offensive talent; nevertheless, competition for places can only be a good thing as Emery's men look to break into the race for Champions League qualification.

Aston Villa: Emery’s ‘outstanding’ maestro was better than Watkins vs Chelsea

Aston Villa recorded yet another wonderful victory in the Premier League, this time claiming the scalp of Chelsea, defeating the Blues 1-0 at Stamford Bridge.

Indeed, the win meant Villa recorded back-to-back away wins in consecutive seasons over Chelsea for the first time in the league since the 1930s, a remarkable feat.

Unai Emery was hoping to move on from a disappointing Europa Conference League defeat to Polish side Legia Warsaw and a goal from Ollie Watkins sealed all three points with just under 20 minutes remaining.

It was his first Premier League goal of the campaign and if he embarks on another run this term similar to what he achieved post-Christmas during last season – scoring 13 goals across his final 23 league matches – then Villa will be challenging the top six.

How did Ollie Watkins perform vs Chelsea?

Although Watkins had netted three goals before this tie, they had all come in the rampant 5-0 victory against Hibernian in the qualifiers for the Conference League.

The striker had registered two assists but he finally broke his barren spell against Mauricio Pochettino’s side while enjoying an impressive individual performance.

Along with his goal, Watkins also created one big chance, made one key pass and won 100% of his ground duels as he sought to cause mayhem to the Chelsea backline.

It certainly worked as he took his goal well, but the performance was a team effort and one player stood out among all else – Boubacar Kamara.

Was Boubacar Kamara Aston Villa’s best player vs Chelsea?

Emery deployed a 4-2-3-1, and it appeared to have the desired effect, with Kamara and Douglas Luiz controlling the game from the heart of the midfield.

Indeed, the midfield pair were described as being "far superior" to both Moises Caicedo and Enzo Fernandez in the centre of the park, as per The Teleraph's Matt Law, while the Frenchman, in particular, was lauded by journalist John Townley for his "outstanding" performance.

Outstanding he was. The midfielder took 65 touches during his spell on the pitch while he sought to carve open the Chelsea defence by making four key passes throughout the game.

A 89% pass success rate certainly helped Villa dominate the Blues in the middle of the pitch and Kamara also demonstrated that he could defend too, winning 60% of his ground duels alongside two interceptions and five tackles.

It was yet another wonderful performance by the former Marseille man. The 23-year-old currently ranks fourth in the squad for accurate passes per game (44.8) and key passes per game (1.3) while also ranking second for tackles (2.5) and fourth for interceptions (0.8) per game, showcasing his class across a wide range of metrics.

He will be vital to any success Villa hope to achieve this season and there is no doubt his performances will just continue to get better and better.

With four wins from six league games thus far, Emery has the club on the right path to securing a top-six finish, especially if Kamara – and Watkins – can remain fit and healthy in the coming months.

Amrabat Signing Must Spell The End For Man Utd’s £60k-p/w Dud

After a summer of endless rumours and transfer sagas, those of a Manchester United persuasion can now breathe a collective sigh of relief after the window slammed shut on Friday evening, with attention able to return to matters on the field – until January, at least.

Fresh off the back of a campaign that saw new boss Erik ten Hag guide the club to Carabao Cup glory and an FA Cup final – while also securing Champions League football with a third-place finish – the Red Devils set about strengthening their ranks by acquiring Mason Mount, Andre Onana and Rasmus Hojlund prior to the start of the new Premier League season, with that trio of additions brought in with the aim of strengthening the spine of the team ahead of another action-packed term at Old Trafford.

As is typically the way for the modern-day United, that largely smooth start to the summer was followed by a frantic finale as the club lasered in on multiple new additions on deadline day, with a mixed start to the season, as well as a string of injury issues, having emphasised the need for further quality and depth prior to the close of the window.

Who did Man United sign on deadline day?

Such was the hectic nature of proceedings at the Theatre of Dreams, it was almost hard to keep track of the incomings and outgoings at the club on deadline day, with as many as four deals having been wrapped up by John Murtough and co.

Following the belated departure of Dean Henderson to Crystal Palace, Ten Hag first snapped up Fenerbahce stopper Altay Bayindir in order to help provide competition for the aforementioned Onana in the goalkeeping ranks, with the 25-year-old becoming the first Turkish player to ply his trade for the club.

Erik ten Hag

That arrival was followed in quick succession by the acquisition of Tottenham Hotspur outcast, Sergio Reguilon on a season-long loan deal following the loss of first-choice left-back Luke Shaw to injury, while veteran centre-back Jonny Evans – who was part of the last title-winning United squad back in 2012/13 – confirmed his stay for the current campaign after previously featuring in pre-season.

Arguably the most notable and likely most exciting addition of the day, however, was the capture of Fiorentina maestro, Sofyan Amrabat, with the 27-year-old having signed on an initial loan deal from the Serie A side, with a view to making a permanent switch at the end of the season.

What is Sofyan Amrabat's position?

Despite having already acquired their new number seven, Mount, to help strengthen in the centre of the park, Ten Hag was seemingly intent on a reunion with the Moroccan international after previously coaching him at FC Utrecht, with the player patiently holding out to seal what is likely to be a dream move.

Previously described as the "best centre midfielder at the tournament" during his nation's stunning surge to the last four of the World Cup in Qatar, as per journalist Carlo Garganese, Amrabat will be tasked with helping to stabilise proceedings in United's midfield ranks – a part of the side that was dubbed "non-existent" by club legend Gary Neville during the narrow opening game win over Wolverhampton Wanderers.

The former Club Brugge ace is likely to slot in alongside Casemiro and Bruno Fernandes in Ten Hag's midfield trio, with the aim of showcasing "his committed, high-energy approach" in his deep-lying berth, as hailed by Murtough.

Fiorentina midfielder Sofyan Amrabat.

With Mount currently sidelined, Amrabat is set to compete with Christian Eriksen for a starting berth over the coming weeks, with options in that department having been somewhat limited by the departure of Fred to Turkey and the loss of teenage sensation, Kobbie Mainoo, to injury.

There is, of course, also Scott McTominay for Ten Hag to call upon after the Scotland international stayed put on deadline day – despite interest from the likes of Bayern Munich, Inter and Fulham – although with the 26-year-old having already seen his impact inhibited by Casemiro's addition last year, the signing of Amrabat should likely prove the final straw for his time at the club.

What will happen to Scott McTominay?

Despite rumours having been rife that United were willing to cash in on the academy graduate, the towering, 6 foot 2 midfielder was spared the axe – for now, at least – as no move away from Old Trafford materialised, ensuring that the Lancaster native can try his best to compete for a more prominent role.

That being said, after starting just ten top-flight games last season, having to now also try and fend off Amrabat for a starting berth will no doubt prove an even tougher task, particularly with McTominay having previously been branded a player who is simply "not good enough" for the club, in the view of treble winner, Roy Keane.

Scott McTominay

As pundit Frank McAvennie stated, "McTominay is a good player but not for Man United", with his form at international level – for whom he has scored five goals in just his last four outings – showcasing that he could well have blossomed elsewhere had a summer deal been completed, even if he is perhaps not up to scratch for the lofty demands of the Red Devils.

A particular frustration with the £60k-per-week brute has always been his shortcomings in possession, with those showcased by the fact that he ranks in just the bottom 5% among those in his position in Europe's top five leagues for progressive passes per 90 and the bottom 19% for attempted passes per 90, as well as in just the top 47% for pass completion.

Amrabat, by contrast, is a far more composed operator in the centre of the park as he ranks in at least the top 2% for all three of those metrics, thus indicating the potential upgrade in quality that Ten Hag could well have made by reuniting with his former asset.

While form and injury may yet give McTominay further chance to impress over the coming weeks and months, that marquee new arrival could well be the beginning of the end for his time in Manchester, as the Premier League giants look to take a further step closer toward truly competing for the top honours once again.

Man United Boss Ten Hag Now Expected To Sign "Underrated" Defender

Manchester United boss Erik Ten Hag is moving closer to being able to add another defender to the ranks this summer before the transfer window closes, according to reports.

Who could Manchester United sign or sell before the window closes?

This window, Manchester United have managed to secure the additions of Mason Mount, Andre Onana and Rasmus Hojlund at Old Trafford and there could be more arrivals to come in the next week or so.

Despite this, the Red Devils have produced two sub-par displays in their opening Premier League fixtures, recording a fortuitous 1-0 victory against Wolverhampton Wanderers on the opening day of the campaign at home followed by a disappointing 2-0 defeat to Tottenham Hotspur in north London, as per Sky Sports.

Next up for Manchester United is a home tie against Nottingham Forest this weekend and they will have to do without £60 million signing Mount, who has suffered a knock and will be out until after the international break, according to The Daily Mail.

In terms of recruitment, Brentford striker Ivan Toney has been mentioned in connection with a surprise move to Old Trafford; however, it is more likely that Manchester United will wait until January to advance for the England international due to his ban from football activity for breaching the FA's betting rules, according to FootballTransfers.

ESPN understand that Ten Hag is looking to add a midfielder and a goalkeeper before the close of play, though player sales will be needed to spark any potential incomings.

Donny van de Beek, Eric Bailly, Brandon Williams and Dean Henderson may all leave the Premier League giants this summer and any funds secured for their services are likely to go towards reinforcements, while shifting Harry Maguire off the books is also a priority.

Manchester United winger Facundo Pellestri is in talks over a loan move to Sheffield United and despite being pleased by his progress, they see a move to Bramall Lane as an opportunity for the youngster to gain regular first-team experience, according to The Manchester Evening News.

Is Jean-Clair Todibo joining Manchester United?

According to L'Equipe cited via Sport Witness, Manchester United are keen on a younger Maguire replacement in the shape of Nice defender Jean-Clair Todibo – and his exit from the Ligue 1 outfit is said to be 'looming'.

Nice actually now expect their star man will leave and are already looking at replacements – they have identified Rennes star Christopher Wooh as an alternative that can strengthen their backline as they prepare for Todibo to head to Manchester United, as per the report.

Nice centre-back Jean-Clair Todibo.

Labelled as "underrated" by Football Talent Scout Jacek Kulig earlier this year, Todibo has gone on to make 104 appearances across all competitions in his time at Nice, registering two goals in total, as per Transfermarkt.

For a defender, Todibo has excelled in comparison to his positional peers across Europe's top five divisions in the art of successful take-ons, averaging 0.63 per 90 minutes across the last 365 days, putting him in the 96th percentile for this metric, according to FBRef.

It remains to be seen whether Todibo's prospective arrival would further unsettle Maguire and impact his future at Old Trafford; nevertheless, there is no doubt that the former Barcelona man would be an upgrade and hopefully replace the England international.
