Rodgers has struck gold with Celtic star who's worth more than Kvistgaarden

Celtic made a bold decision in the January transfer window at the start of this year when they opted to sell Kyogo Furuhashi to Rennes for a reported fee of £10m.

The Japan international scored 85 goals in 165 matches in all competitions for the Scottish giants during his time at Parkhead, including 34 goals in the 2022/23 campaign.

Despite losing the prolific goalscorer midway through the campaign, the Hoops opted against dipping into the market to sign a replacement for him, although they were linked with an interest in Danish forward Mathias Kvistgaarden.

What Mathias Kvistgaarden could bring to Celtic

The Scottish Premiership champions reportedly made an approach to sign the Brondby striker in January, but failed to get a deal over the line for him, and are reportedly looking at him once again ahead of the summer.

Market Movers

Football FanCast’s Market Movers series explores the changing landscape of the modern transfer market. How much is your club’s star player or biggest flop worth today?

If the Hoops do decide to go through with a swoop for him ahead of next season, Kvistgaarden could be an exciting addition to the squad, considering his impressive record in Denmark.

The 23-year-old striker has scored 16 goals, and missed 14 ‘big chances’, in 24 starts in the Danish Superliga, and scored 22 goals in all competitions for Brondby, which suggests that he could arrive as a big goalscoring threat at an age where he still has time left to develop and improve.

His form has led to Transfermarkt valuing the forward at £6.7m at the time of writing (20/05/2025), which is even lower than the player Celtic essentially replaced Kyogo with, Daizen Maeda.

Rodgers has hit the jackpot with Daizen Maeda

The Japan international has played on the wing for the majority of his Celtic career, but Kyogo’s move to Rennes in January provided him with an opportunity to play more games as a striker.

Celtic star Daizen Maeda.

He had only played two matches as a centre-forward in all competitions before the turn of the year, and has since played eight times in that role, splitting number nine duties with Adam Idah.

As you can see in the table above, that change in position has been a masterstroke by Brendan Rodgers, who has hit the jackpot with the forward, because he has been directly involved in 18 goals in just ten games as a striker.

His market value has also soared as a result of that change. Maeda was valued at £6.7m, as much as Kvistgaarden, in December 2024, and is now valued at £9.3m by Transfermarkt at the time of writing, which shows that the versatile star is now worth even more than the Celtic transfer target.

The Japanese whiz, who was described as “unbelievable” by Rodgers, has thrived due to the positional change that the manager opted to make after Kyogo left, and has proven himself to be more than capable of being a starting centre-forward for Celtic.

Therefore, the Hoops have hit the jackpot with the 27-year-old star, who may have just alleviated the need to splash the cash on Kvistgaarden this summer, as the club now have him and Idah available to lead the line heading into next season.

The best ST since Drogba: Chelsea leading the race for "sensational" star

Chelsea has been the home to countless attacking stars over the years, but not many have managed to match the levels produced by Ivorian striker Didier Drogba.

The forward joined the Blues back in the summer of 2004 from Ligue 1 outfit Marseille, with José Mourinho working tirelessly to complete a deal to take him to Stamford Bridge.

Such a deal would prove to be a masterstroke, with the now 47-year-old starring over two separate spells in West London, claiming a total of 12 major trophies with the Blues.

Drogba notched a total of 164 goals during his time at the club, arguably scoring the most important goal in their history during the Champions League final back in 2012.

However, in the present day, Enzo Maresca doesn’t have the focal point he desires to have his own version of the talisman, leading to huge rumours over a deal for a new number nine this summer.

The latest on Chelsea’s pursuit of a new striker this summer

Ipswich Town striker Liam Delap has been hugely touted with a move to join Chelsea this summer, with the 22-year-old starring in the Premier League throughout 2024/25.

He’s managed to notch a total of 12 goals in 31 appearances for the Tractor Boys, leading to links to move to Stamford Bridge given his £30m release clause.

Ipswich Town'sLiamDelapreacts

However, it appears as though Maresca’s side have been handed a boost in their pursuit for his signature, with Delap not interested in a move to Manchester United after their own willingness to land him.

Players such as Jonathan David and Victor Osimhen have also been thrown into the mix lately, but Borussia Dortmund talisman Serhou Guirassy is the latest player to emerge as a target.

According to journalist Maurizio Russo, the Blues are currently leading the race for the 29-year-old, who has managed to net 28 goals in his 40 appearances across all competitions this term.

Chelsea’s best striker since Drogba

Over the years, Chelsea have spent big to try and fill the centre-forward role, but so far to no avail, given their huge hunt for a new number nine.

The likes of Romelu Lukaku, Álvaro Morata and Christopher Nkunku have all tried to cement their place at the top end of the pitch, but none of them have successfully managed to do so.

The hierarchy have splashed over £200m on the aforementioned trio alone, highlighting the need to land the right star to end their hunt over the next few months.

Guinean forward Guirassy could manage to do just that should he complete a switch to the Bridge this summer, but he won’t come cheap, currently having a £70m release clause in his contract.

However, when comparing him to the current options at the manager’s disposal, he’s massively outperformed them both – showcasing what a sensational signing he could be in their quest for Premier League glory.

Guirassy, who’s been labelled “sensational” by one analyst, has outscored Nicolas Jackson and Nkunku in 2024/25, whilst also registering a higher goal-per-shot-on-target rate – demonstrating his clinical nature in the final third.

He’s also won more fouls per 90, whilst also registering more shots per game – offering an all-round presence that the Blues have greatly missed in recent months.

However, the 29-year-old has dominated aerially, winning more of the duels he’s entered in the air, finally allowing Maresca to have that target man that he’s craved since joining last summer.

Whilst £70m may appear to be a mammoth sum of money for a player entering the back end of his career, the Dortmund attacker has the star quality to make an immediate impact in West London.

With the majority of the side being full of youngsters, the balance between them and Guirassy could be a successful one, massively aiding the club in their title ambitions throughout 2025/26.

Markram unfazed by lean patch with bat: 'That's just the nature of the beast'

The South Africa batter on finding his touch, dealing with conditions in the UAE, navigating a packed cricket calendar, and more

Ashish Pant26-Sep-2024It has been a strange 2024 for Aiden Markram. As captain, he has been phenomenal. He started the year leading Sunrisers Eastern Cape to their second successive SA20 title and then became the first captain to guide South Africa into the final of a men’s T20 World Cup in June. The T20I series loss against West Indies was little more than a blemish on his record. But his returns with the bat have taken a hit. There was a breathtaking century against India in the second Test in Cape Town in January, but barring that, his only 50-plus score this year across formats is the unbeaten 69 he hit in the third ODI against Afghanistan last week. It was a crucial innings in many ways, helping South Africa avoid a 3-0 clean sweep, but Markram’s form in general has been a concern. This becomes especially true in T20Is, where he last scored a half-century in October 2022.Markram, however, isn’t concerned about his lean patch, insisting he has felt “quite good with bat in hand.”Related

  • Shamar Joseph, Naseem Shah, Josh Little among internationals shortlisted for SA20 auction

  • Markram 69 helps South Africa sign off with big win

“I mean, it’s all just cricket, really. You can feel as good as you want and not score runs, and that’s just the nature of the beast, unfortunately,” Markram told reporters in an interaction organised by ahead of the two-match T20I series against Ireland.”Some challenging wickets at the World Cup, but all in all, been feeling quite good with bat in hand. Obviously, was nice to get some runs in the last ODI, but a lot of the time I just measure form as to how much I can contribute to my team winning games and not necessarily the amount of runs that I’m scoring.”So that’s what I’m going to take with me moving forward, and hopefully, I can score some runs so that the team is in a good position and can win games are cricket.”Markram will hope to quickly find his 20-over rhythm, especially after South Africa’s heavy defeats to Afghanistan in the ODIs and the fact that they haven’t brought their strongest set of players on this UAE leg.Heinrich Klaasen, David Miller and Kagiso Rabada are some of the key names missing from the squad for the Ireland series. Nine of the 15 players in the T20I squad are yet to play more than ten T20 games. Add to that Reeza Hedricks’ lean run and that leaves a South Africa unit devoid of experience and form.Markram, though, feels that the players selected for this tour all have what it takes to succeed at the international level.”There’s a few guys that have put up their hands domestically back at home in the SA20 itself as well,” he said. “You look at a guy like Wiaan Mulder come on. Matthew Breetzke had a really good SA20. And then Nqaba Peter, of course, he’s got that X-factor. He’s still really, really young and really raw, but he has a lot of those attributes that we like as a team.”So there’s a few guys that deserve to be here firstly, and deserve to have that opportunity to grow their games as cricketers and get exposed to international cricket. And hopefully, if they get a fair opportunity and feel really comfortable in the environment, they can start putting in some nice performances for the team.”Markram became the first South Africa captain to lead the team into a World Cup final•Getty ImagesAnother thing that the South Africans have had to contend with on this UAE tour is the conditions. In sweltering heat in Sharjah during the ODI series, they often found themselves under the pump. The conditions are unlikely to change much when it comes to Abu Dhabi, but Markam feels having been in the UAE for a while should hold them in good stead.”From your heat point of view, it’s just as hot here [in Abu Dhabi], if not hotter and slightly more humid [than Sharjah]. So, it’s nice to have been here now for a while and played in an ODI series going into this T20 series. That’s a big positive for us,” he said. “Sharjah obviously spun quite a bit, or at least a fair amount, and the wicket was pretty placid. I think Abu Dhabi, I haven’t played too much cricket here, but I don’t think it’s going to be as bare a wicket as maybe Sharjah was.”If I look at our nets that we had last night, it’s actually a little bit of movement off the wicket, and they left quite a bit more grass on it compared to Sharjah. We’ll have to be sharp. We’ll have another look at it today at training and try get as much info as we can, just from looking at it with the naked eye. But it’ll ultimately come down to us assessing it in the first few balls, first over tomorrow, and coming up with those plans.”The last time South Africa faced Ireland in an international game was back in 2022 and while the Irish spinners might not trouble the South African batters as much as Afghanistan’s did, Markram is not taking them lightly.

“It is quite a busy schedule, but if you’d offered this to us as a kid growing up, we would have given lots for it”Markram on the cricket calendar

“We’ve all seen how good the Irish team has been over the last few years, and how much they’ve progressed as a team” he said. “Naturally, we don’t face them maybe as much as other teams, so it’ll just be trying to get accustomed to that as quick as we can, and trying to get an understanding of their plans as quick as we can, so that we can try to combat it ourselves.”South Africa have a busy schedule in front of them. After the T20I and ODI series against Ireland, they next travel to Bangladesh before going back home for a T20I series against India. Then they host Sri Lanka and Pakistan at home followed by the SA20 before they travel to Pakistan for a tri-nation series, also involving New Zealand.Markram, however, feels that a packed cricket schedule has become the norm and rotating and managing players will be the way forward.”Yeah, there’s lots of cricket. But we’re not the only team that’s playing lots of cricket. All the teams around the world are playing lots of cricket,” he said. “It’s down to the individual to manage their time wisely, look after their body, and give themselves the best chance of being really sharp for each and every series.”It is quite a busy schedule, but if you’d offered this to us as a kid growing up, we would have given lots for it. That’s sort of how we try to see it, and we take each series on as best we can.”

Mumbai Indians need a replacement for Pollard, and back-ups for Bumrah and Archer

But do they have the money to pursue big names like Curran or Stokes?

Vishal Dikshit19-Dec-20226:10

How can Mumbai make up for last year’s auction?

Who they’ve got
After releasing as many as 13 players last month, Mumbai would be eager to put together an all-round squad after not making the playoffs in the last two seasons. They have good options in top-order batters and finishers, but need to pick up a few players to round off their bowling attack, in both the spin and pace departments.Follow the 2023 IPL auction LIVE

You can watch the auction live in India on Star Sports, and follow live analysis with Tom Moody, Ian Bishop, Wasim Jaffer and Stuart Binny right here on ESPNcricinfo.

Current squad: Rohit Sharma (capt), Tim David, Ramandeep Singh, Tilak Varma, Suryakumar Yadav, Ishan Kishan, Tristan Stubbs, Dewald Brevis, Jofra Archer, Jasprit Bumrah, Arjun Tendulkar, Arshad Khan, Kumar Kartikeya, Hrithik Shokeen, Jason Behrendorff, Akash MadhwalWhat they have to play with
Mumbai can spend up to INR 20.55 crore (USD 2.4 million approx.) for a total of nine slots remaining in the squad, of which at most three can be overseas. What they need
The biggest name Mumbai are going to be without this time is Kieron Pollard, and they also let go of a few fast bowlers and a couple of back-up spinners ahead of the auction. More than anything, they need a back-up quick for the injury-prone Jofra Archer and a fast-bowling allrounder. As Jasprit Bumrah bowls primarily at the death in the IPL, they may want to bring in another Indian quick in their line-up for the powerplay, a role Trent Boult played very well in 2020. They also haven’t had a big-name Indian spinner in their attack in recent years and could do with one, along with picking a second wicketkeeping option as back-up for Ishan Kishan. The likely targets
For the fast-bowling allrounder’s slot, Mumbai could bag one of the big names like Ben Stokes, Cameron Green or Sam Curran to make up for Pollard’s absence.Adam Zampa, Tabraiz Shamsi and Adil Rashid are three high-profile spinners in the auction pool, although picking an overseas spinner becomes tricky for the team combination. The star Indian spinners have all been retained by the teams, which slims down Mumbai’s options to Mayank Markande, M Ashwin (they released both recently), Shreyas Gopal and Amit Mishra.Riley Meredith is another name they let go of before this auction but may want to reconsider as a back-up for Archer. Dushmantha Chameera’s pace could also be a useful option, especially on the bouncy Wankhede pitches. One option for the back-up wicketkeeper’s slot is N Jagadeesan, who hit five straight one-day centuries recently, including a 277. Mohammed Azharuddeen is another T20 name, having smashed a 37-ball century against the domestic Mumbai side in Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy in the 2020-21 season.Among the India quicks, Mumbai could look at Shivam Mavi for pace or the 23-year-old Vidwath Kaverappa, who bagged 18 wickets in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy.

'There's an awful lot of fight left in me' – Lauren Winfield-Hill rediscovers her England ambition

Crohn’s disease made batter consider giving up on World Cup dream but now she has illness under control

Valkerie Baynes26-May-2021After a long battle with ill-health, World Cup winner Lauren Winfield-Hill has set her sights on opening the batting for England again when they defend their title next year.Winfield-Hill was diagnosed with Crohn’s disease in October 2019 but it was only four months ago that she found herself in one place long enough to establish a course of life-long medication that she has found to be, quite literally, a game changer.”You have to have regular doctor’s checks, regular bloods, you have to be able to have a chance to see if it’s working,” Winfield-Hill tells ESPNcricinfo. “So basically I just had to go on steroids for a year to tide me over, until it came to a point where you can’t really stay on steroids any longer. [But now] we’ve got a really nice window of three months at home.”It was just finding the window to get set up on the meds and then within six weeks I’m like, ‘holy Hell, I feel so much better’. I didn’t realise how naff I was feeling.”

“We’ve got a really exciting 12 months coming up that I don’t want to be carrying drinks for”Lauren Winfield-Hill

She had become so used to fatigue, vomiting episodes and “feeling sub-par” that Winfield-Hill recalls thinking she would never feel any different. It became so bad that she considered giving up on her England aspirations.”I had a really rough time in one of the bubbles during the West Indies’ [tour],” she says. “I had a real bad flare-up and I was just like, ‘You know what? I don’t think I can keep playing international sport, I’m not well enough, my body just can’t tolerate the workload’.”I remember saying to the specialist, ‘I don’t know about playing sport like this, it’s getting really hard’. He said: ‘Trust me, once we get you on these meds, you will be fine, you’ll be great, you’ll feel good; don’t throw the towel in.'”Not only did she begin to feel better, but her pre-season numbers are proof that she is doing better also.”We did some testing and I punched out some really great scores,” she says. “I’ve always really prided myself on being a good trainer and a good professional and for a long time I was like, ‘why am I plateauing physically?’ I was pretty jaded.”For three years I went nowhere physically. Now all of a sudden I’m up at the front of the pack and it’s like, ‘thank God that’s what was going on, rather than trying really hard and working as hard as I’ve ever worked and getting nothing back’.”Lauren Winfield-Hill has been producing strong pre-season training scores•Getty ImagesWinfield-Hill was England’s leading run-scorer for the T20 leg of the 2019 Ashes series, some distance behind Meg Lanning and Ellyse Perry, batting in the middle-order. She travelled to Malaysia for England’s white-ball series against Pakistan but didn’t get to bat in the one T20 she played. She made 1 and 4 not out in her two innings at the Women’s T20 World Cup at the start of last year, batting at No.8, and was part of England’s squad for their home T20 series against West Indies last summer without playing a match.”You spend a lot of time training for not a lot of output at times in terms of game-time,” she says. “And it’s difficult being a senior player and carrying drinks and not getting an opportunity.”There’s an awful lot of fight left in me. I don’t see myself as a real senior player because I have been out of the team a lot. I’m fairly experienced, but my game-time has not always been that consistent so, in cricket years, I still feel young. Physically I feel better than I’ve ever felt.”We’ve got a really exciting 12 months coming up that I don’t want to be carrying drinks for. I want to be playing in the World Cup. In the 2017 World Cup that we won, I was at the top of the order and I’d like to be there to defend it.”Related

Winfield-Hill scored an unbeaten 140 opening for England Women A in a pre-season warm-up against England Women at the start of May. Now she is preparing for Northern Diamonds’ first match of the Rachael Heyhoe Flint Trophy against Central Sparks at Headingley on Saturday. Beyond that, she has the Hundred to look forward to in July, where she will represent Northern Superchargers.”I’m a lot more relaxed in knowing that there’s going to be lots of opportunities,” Winfield-Hill says. “Sometimes it can be quite difficult when you don’t have a lot of cricket lined up, to put a lot of pressure on: ‘I’ve got to do it in this next game, I have to perform, it’s not that many games to come’. That mindset can be really crippling.”I’ve just really tried to focus on what I need to do to be a really good solid opening batter that also has versatility to bat in other spots, but knowing what my goals are and being quite focused on that.”But she remains wary of putting too much pressure on herself.”It’s just a big trap, isn’t it, with anything where you set your sights too high and you put a lot of pressure on yourself and you miss the steps along the way,” she says.”So I’m just trying to keep everything really simple. I’m just trying to play as well as I can in the next game I play, or the next time I train.”We’ve got a few domestic games now in the Rachael Heyhoe Flint Trophy. If I manage to continue some nice form in that, then I’ve every chance of being able to achieve those goals in an England shirt.”In that first England internal game… it wasn’t like I was setting out some big stall and this big goal to have a great day out. It was just, ‘play as well as you can, next ball, play as well as you can, try and win the game for the team and keep it really simple’. I’m just trying to strip it all back.”Winfield-Hill played three matches last year in the competition’s first season, when the Diamonds finished runners-up, beaten in the final by Southern Vipers. For the early part of this season, the Diamonds have England stars Katherine Brunt and Nat Sciver in their ranks too.”It’s going to be a dogfight the first few games because it’s not glorious sunshine, rock-hard wickets,” Winfield-Hill says. “It’s not a batter’s paradise just yet but I’m really excited.”It’s amazing to see how, with a proper winter under their belts, how much girls have improved, having never really had the opportunity to train much before.”Lauren Winfield-Hill hopes a good start with Northern Diamonds will lead to England selection•Getty ImagesFive Diamonds players – Hollie Armitage, Beth Langston, Linsey Smith, Phoebe Graham and Jenny Gunn – hold full-time professional contracts under the ECB’s new women’s domestic structure. A number of teams have reported positive knock-on effects whereby players not on full-time contracts are benefiting from working within a professional set-up.”No doubt about it, you’re looking to go one better than last year,” Winfield-Hill says. “We’ve got the talent in the group to be able to do it – you don’t get to the final by accident.”A lot of those competitions – you had the Super League, the Heyhoe Flint Trophy – it’s been dominated a lot by teams from the south and it’s just having the exposure of being in those big finals. The more you do that, the more you learn from those situations, one of these days you’ll get over the line in those big games.”

Newcastle now determined to sign one of the "most intelligent creators" in Europe

Newcastle United have now reportedly set their sights on welcoming an impressive Bundesliga talent back to the Premier League in 2026.

Newcastle receive shock Wissa hope before Burnley

In their 2-2 draw against Tottenham Hotspur on Tuesday night, Newcastle certainly could’ve done with the added firepower of Yoane Wissa. They welcomed the news that he’d been left out of the DR Congo squad for the African Cup of Nations, but were yet to welcome their summer signing back from the sidelines.

That, however, could be about to change. The Daily Mail’s Craig Hope dropped an unexpected update on Wissa’s fitness on Wednesday afternoon, claiming that the forward is now “pushing” to make a shock return to the bench against Burnley.

With fixtures coming thick and fast, to say Wissa’s return against Burnley would be a major boost for Eddie Howe would be an understatement. The Newcastle boss is yet to see his summer signing in action.

The returning forward may not be the only player to hand Howe a much-needed boost in the coming months, either. The January transfer window is now less than a month away and reports are claiming that Newcastle are preparing their move to sign Igor Thiago in a Wissa repeat.

The Brentford forward, who replaced Wissa in West London, has only been outscored by Erling Haaland in the Premier League so far this season and may have done enough to earn a big move.

It looks like those at St James’ Park are ready to add that quality in depth all across the pitch too, with Bilal El Khannouss also emerging as a 2026 target.

Newcastle determined to sign El Khannouss

As reported by TeamTalk, Newcastle are now determined to sign El Khannouss in 2026 and could attempt to secure his signature once his loan spell at VfB Stuttgart comes to an end next summer.

£65m Newcastle duo should be fuming with Howe's team selection vs Spurs

During his time away from Leicester City, the midfielder has thrived – scoring five goals and creating another six in all competitions. But his heart remains set on a return to the Premier League that Newcastle could offer him next year.

Dubbed one of the “most intelligent creators” by Como scout Ben Mattinson back in April, it’s clear that El Khannouss wants to end some unfinished business in the Premier League.

The 21-year-old went out with a whimper at Leicester City last season, but could come roaring back to England’s top tier courtesy of Newcastle next year.

Litchfield, Voll hurt Melbourne Stars' qualification chances in rain-affected game

Stars, who entered the match placed second on the ladder, will now wait nervously on other results

10 overs Melbourne Stars suffered a costly WBBL loss just before finals as Sydney Thunder captain Phoebe Litchfield dominated a rain-affected encounter. Unable to reach the finals, Thunder destroyed the title-contending Stars by nine wickets in their last game of the tournament at the Junction Oval in Melbourne.Due to persistent rain, the match was shortened to ten overs a side as the Stars managed just 66 for 6 after being sent in to bat. Litchfield and fellow Australia young gun Georgia Voll made light work of the DLS-revised target of 76, securing the winning runs with 17 balls to spare. With just 11 runs needed and rain starting to fall again, Litchfield attempted one big shot too many and was out to Annabel Sutherland for a destructive 37 from 23 balls. Voll was untroubled by losing her opening partner, making an unbeaten 33 from 18 balls.Fellow big-hitter Laura Harris smashed the winning runs with a reverse ramp for four. Voll also chimed in with 2 for 13 to be named player of the match. The defeat is bound to have serious ramifications for the Stars, who entered the match placed second on the ladder. Hobart Hurricanes are locked in to host the final on December 13 as minor premiers, but the other three spots in the four remain up for grabs.Stars will wait nervously on other results, with Perth Scorchers hosting the winless Brisbane Heat on Saturday night. If the Scorchers, as expected, win, they will jump ahead of Stars into second. In the last game before finals, Sydney Sixers can also overtake Stars if they beat Adelaide Strikers at North Sydney Oval on Sunday.Thunder will finish the tournament in seventh, winning four of their 10 games.

Lost the ball 53x: Liverpool have two stars to blame for Isak nightmare

Liverpool suffered yet another defeat, their eighth in 11 games across all competitions, as the troubles continue to mount at Anfield. Arne Slot’s side were thrashed 3-0 at the hands of Nottingham Forest, who have now won away to the Reds in two consecutive seasons.

It was a dire performance once again from the Merseysiders, who looked short of any sort of creative ideas and weak at the back. The first goal came from a corner again, with Murillo peeling away into space and picking up a loose ball, which he fired past the returning Alisson to put Forest 1-0 up.

The East Midlands outfit thought they had a second, but Igor Jesus saw his goal disallowed for a contentious handball. Their second came seconds into the second half, with right-back Nicolo Savona ghosting into the penalty box and hammering home from ten yards or so.

Forest captain Morgan Gibbs-White capped off a wonderful day out for his side in the 78th minute. After brilliant play from Omari Hutchinson, he saw his shot saved by Alisson. However, the Brazilian could only palm it into the path of Gibbs-White, who clinically finished to seal the win.

It was another poor showing from the Reds, with Alexander Isak struggling once again.

Alexander Isak’s stats vs. Forest

The start of Isak’s Liverpool career has been very stop-start. He’s missed six games in total, for various reasons, and hasn’t played in the Premier League since the 19th of October.

His return to top-flight action against Forest was disappointing.

The Sweden international, who is still searching for his first Premier League goal in Red, was hooked by Slot after just 68 minutes, with his side still searching for two goals to bring them back into the game.

Indeed, his numbers reflect just how poor a performance it was from Isak. He managed just 15 touches, losing possession seven times, and only had one shot, which accumulated an expected goals tally of 0.13xG.

Stats from Sofascore

One person who was critical of the Liverpool number nine was Goal journalist Stephen Darwin. He gave the Swede a 2/10 for his performance at Anfield, pointing out that he ‘wasn’t even close to breaking his duck’ when it comes to Premier League goals.

However, the blame cannot solely lie with the striker, who didn’t necessarily get the service he needed.

Two players who struggled to get the ball to Isak

One of the key things that Darwin stressed in his review of Isak’s performance was the fact that he ‘hardly had a kick’ of the ball. Of course, 15 touches makes for poor reading, but you still have to provide the ball for your centre-forward.

Two of the players who struggled with exactly that were wingers Cody Gakpo and Mohamed Salah. Generally speaking, it was not the worst performance, with Salah creating three chances and Gakpo one, although they were sloppy in possession, losing the ball a combined 53 times.

However, it was their service to the Reds centre-forward which was inadequate at best. According to Stats Zone, the Liverpool number ten passes to Isak just three times, and Dutch international Gakpo twice.

That is certainly not the level of service he needs to help him start finding his best form in front of goal. Perhaps it is due to the clash of profiles. Both Salah and Gakpo are inside forwards who like to cut inside, entering similar areas to those Isak operates in.

Alternatively, the problem could simply be a lack of time spent on the pitch with their new teammate. Isak has missed such a large portion of the season that it simply might take some time for the trio to gel.

Regardless, it is a problem Slot must fix quickly. The Reds’ form is a huge concern, as they slip further down the Premier League table. The Dutchman must get his big-money striker and first-choice wingers firing, as they look to rectify this poor form.
