The Chalkboard: Birkir Bjarnason deserves big chance in derby following McGinn injury

Aston Villa are expected to be without Scotland international John McGinn for the Second City derby with Birmingham City after the central midfielder withdrew from international duty with a calf injury.

[ad_pod ]

The Chalkboard

Dean Smith has called on the services of McGinn more than any other central midfielder since taking over at the helm from Steve Bruce. The Scotland international has recorded a total of 15 Championship appearances so far this season, almost twice as many as his rivals for the position.

In his outings for the claret and blue side of Birmingham, the 24-year-old has led the way for tackles with 31 completed – seven more than any other Aston Villa player.

The Villa number seven has also recorded 16 interceptions and been involved in the flow of the game with a pass every other minute, per WhoScored, helping his side to 24 points – level with Birmingham but ahead on goal difference.

Smith, however, is expected to be without the Glasgow-born ace after he withdrew from international duty prior to tests against Albania and Israel.

Playmaker FC’s Matchday with Max caught up with Jamaica’s women’s team. See what happened when he met the history makers in the video below…

Who can step up?

With the 13-cap Scot ruled out with a calf strain, Villa will have spent the international break looking at who can step up to replace an in-form midfielder that scored one and assisted another last time out against Derby County.

Conor Hourihane had partnered McGinn at Pride Park and gave no reason to be dropped after also scoring on the 84th minute in a display featuring an 85% pass success rate and taking four of his side’s five corners.

The decision facing Smith is, therefore, between Birkir Bjarnason and Glenn Whelan. Neither have featured regularly since mid-October but their experience will be a welcome comfort for the loss of a key member of the squad.

Bjarnason’s chance to return

Every Villa player will be itching for a call-up for the Second City derby on Sunday, but the man that should be listed alongside Hourihane is Bjarnason.

The 30-year-old has not featured since October 26, playing 41 minutes at QPR, but has proven to be a creative but defensively sound option in his nine outings this season, netting twice to aid his side in securing a win against Wigan and a draw to Bristol City.

When playing centrally, the 74-cap Iceland international has attempted a tackle every 29.3 minutes and was successful in winning the ball 12 times while only being dispossessed by the opposition on two occasions, according to WhoScored data.

That ability to contribute in both aspects of the game, defensively and offensively, should see Bjarnason get the chance to impress in the derby ahead of Whelan.

Liverpool fans impressed with Ejaria’s goal for Rangers in thrilling Motherwell clash

During a season, most fans like to keep track of the players that are elsewhere on loan.

Liverpool have a handful of youngsters plying their trade at various clubs on a temporary basis.

Ovie Ejaria is one of them and the midfielder is currently on loan at Rangers, which are being led by manager Steven Gerrard.

The former Liverpool captain signed the 20-year-old on a deal until the end of the season.

Gerrard is already well aware of Ejaria’s qualities having been part of the academy coaching staff for over a year before taking over at Rangers.

Ejaria has been part of the Liverpool fold since 2014 when he joined from Arsenal’s academy, and he remains on the fringes of first-team action.

Since moving to Rangers, the midfielder has made 11 appearances in all competitions and he scored his first goal for the Scottish outfit in a thrilling 3-3 draw with Motherwell.

The result of a counter-attack ended in Ejaria taking a few touches before sweeping it past the goalkeeper and into the back of the net.

PL25: The history of Tottenham vs Liverpool

Liverpool and Tottenham face each other this weekend in the Premier League’s headline clash, and both are members of a very elite club of teams to have featured in all of the Premier League seasons to date. Indeed, Sunday’s 4pm kickoff will be the 51st time the Reds have faced Spurs in the league since the reincarnation of the English top flight, but how have they fared in this fixture throughout the last quarter-century? Football FanCast takes a look…

Head-to-Head

Liverpool have taken more points against only two other teams in Premier League history, while only two teams have beaten Tottenham on more than the Reds’ 23 occasions – so perhaps the vast differences in terms of wins and goals scored throughout the last 25 years should be no surprise. In fact, Tottenham haven’t beaten Liverpool in their last ten attempts across all competitions (nine in the top flight), losing seven and drawing three with an aggregate scoreline of 24-7. The fixture has evened out somewhat more recently though, with three draws in the last four Premier League meetings which have had both Jurgen Klopp and Mauricio Pochettino at the helm, and Tottenham will take encouragement from the fact they’ve fared much better at home, boasting a higher win rate than Sunday’s visitors on their own patch – but it remains to be seen if Wembley can have the same effect as White Hart Lane.

[ad_pod id=’leo-vegas’]

The Top Scorer

Equally unsurprisingly considering the aforementioned head-to-head record, the top scorer chart has been dominated by Liverpool players down the years, with the exception of Robbie Keane who once faced Spurs while on the books at Anfield but could only notch up an assist. Top scorer Robbie Fowler, meanwhile, scored all six of his Premier League goals against Tottenham while playing for Liverpool in the space of eleven games. Reds icon John Barnes produced a similar strike rate – four goals in eight games, consisting of a brace in a 6-2 win during the first Premier League season and another at the start of the 1995/96 campaign.

The shared (cult) hero – Peter Crouch

Some more illustrious names fall into the category of playing for both clubs in the Premier League; Jamie Redknapp, Robbie Keane, Danny Murphy, Nicky Barmby and Brad Friedel to mention a few. But few players struck such a perfect equilibrium of appearances for both teams and few went on to earn cult hero status in quite the same way as Peter Crouch. While neither group of fans completely warmed to the towering striker, who was often seen as a rather unfashionable front-man, his strike-rate for the Reds wasn’t half bad – 42 goals in 132 appearances across all competitions, despite often featuring as a substitute – although three seasons at White Hart Lane produced just 24 goals. Perhaps most tellingly of why he was never the beacon of popularity, however, his two tenures produced just one trophy – an FA Cup in 2006.

The Classic Contest – Tottenham 3-3 Liverpool

With the end of the season on the horizon, Tottenham and Liverpool both entered this March fixture at White Hart Lane desperate for a win – the 16th-placed former looking to push themselves clear of the relegation zone and the latter needing all three points to have any hope of closing the gap on Manchester United in the title race. Inevitably then, both teams drew. But the fans were left more than satisfied as the players put on a six-goal thriller in which Tottenham took the lead three times and the Reds equalised three times, no leveller coming less than 15 minutes after the prior goal.

Jurgen Klinsmann, during his much-fabled loan spell back in north London after leaving in 1995, opened the scoring after just 13 minutes with a trademark header, but the Reds hit back shortly after as Michael Owen jinked down the left flank before squaring the ball to Steve McManaman for a relatively routine finish. The iconic David Ginola then put Tottenham ahead once again with a delicate curler that sneaked into the bottom corner under a flailing Brad Friedel, only for Paul Ince to acrobatically net a bicycle kick to make it 2-2. That lead to a thrilling final ten minutes in which Ramon Vega rose highest at a corner to put the Lilywhites in front. However, McManaman soon capitalised on the Swiss defender’s rather shambolic efforts at the other end to poke home a rebound off the post and ensure the spoils were shared.

Prudent planning made Kyle Walker expendable for Tottenham

As was evident during the recent win over Arsenal, Tottenham’s squad is ridiculously strong. While the expensive signings of Vincent Janssen and Moussa Sissoko are still to wholly convince, their strength in depth in key areas of the squad is one of the main reasons Mauricio Pochettino has been able to challenge for the Premier League title for the past two seasons.

This season more than ever, following the tactical shift on these shores that has seen variations of a 3-4-3 formation become so popular, we’ve been hearing just how important full-backs are. In Kyle Walker and Danny Rose, Spurs boast perhaps the strongest pair in the league, so recent suggestions the former could leave this summer would be a major worry to most teams in England.

Over the last few years, Walker has established himself as England’s No.1 right-back, which is no mean feat. For all of the problems plaguing the Three Lions, England’s options in those particular berths are rather strong indeed. As previously discussed in detail in another article, the likes of Nathaniel Clyne, Kieran Trippier and even Adam Smith offer much in the way of dynamism from that area.

If Manchester City’s reported interest in bringing the former Sheffield United man to the Etihad as Pep Guardiola plots the second wave of his revolution is true, it’s easy to see why. The Spaniard, who relied so heavily on the excellent Dani Alves while in charge of Barcelona, has had to make do with the ageing Bacary Sagna and Pablo Zabaleta all season, in a position on the pitch so important to the way in which his teams usually operate.

That’s not to directly compare Walker with the aforementioned Alves, of course, but the role he’d likely be handed at City is similar. Indeed, England is one of the only countries in Europe that still refers to players in that role as ‘full-backs’, with our continental brethren largely referring to the position as ‘laterals’, suggesting far more attacking enterprise.

So, Walker would stretch the pitch for City and offer much more in the way of a direct outlet to some of their possession play. Clearly, an athlete of such ability to bomb up and down the flanks like Walker would be a miss to any side.

Still, herein lies the beauty of Tottenham’s squad. Kieran Trippier, while not as searingly quick, is a more than capable replacement for Pochettino should Walker leave. The former Burnley man – ironically released by City – has had to wait for his chance, though proved particularly impressive in the north London derby.

We keep hearing about how the redevelopment of White Hart Lane will impact Tottenham, much as it did Arsenal during their stadium move, and how Spurs may be forced into selling one of their prized assets.

The likes of Dele Alli, Eric Dier and Toby Alderweireld have all been touted as potential summer exits as Daniel Levy and Mauricio Pochettino attempt to balance the books while remaining competitive at the summit of English football.

Well, if anyone is to leave, Tottenham are very well suited to allow Walker to go. With elite full-backs coming at such a premium these days, as well as the one English players come at, any fee a Premier League rival would have to pay for him is likely to be approaching a world-record one for a player in that position.

In Trippier, as well as the emerging Kyle Walker-Peters (a dynamic full-back of immense potential earning rave reviews in the youth ranks), Tottenham can afford to sell. Crucially, they have all the power in any negotiation and Levy certainly drives a hard bargain.

Whether or not top brass on Hotspur Way had planned the signing of Trippier back in the summer of 2015 in anticipation of the current situation is up for debate. Perhaps that’s lavishing too much praise on the transfer gurus at White Hart Lane, though the signing of a man who is thought to have cost them just £3.5m could allow Spurs to cash in on a deal potentially worth £50m this summer.

Selling Walker would benefit Tottenham off the pitch. However, unlike previous big sales from the club, they’re well prepared to deal with his exit without losing too much in the way of quality.

3-5-2: This Aston Villa XI will beat Newcastle this weekend

It’s another sobering moment for Aston Villa and Newcastle this weekend.

The two former Premier League names face off in the Championship as they look to bounce back to where they feel they belong at the first time of asking.

So far, Newcastle have made the better job of it as the Villains have struggled to adapt to second tier life.

It was a worry that many of their fans had and their inconsistency this season could put paid to any promotion chances having won once, drawn five times and lost twice so far this year.

Nevertheless, Roberto Di Matteo will be confident he can turn things around ahead of playing the Magpies and despite drawing a lot, at least they’re not losing too many.

It could be a sign that things are about to improve, then, and here at Football FanCast we think Villa could take the victory if they go for this line-up…

Pierluigi Gollini

The young ‘keeper has been okay so Villa fans will be pretty happy with what he could become.

Nathan Baker

He’s played just three times this season but looks set for a decent run in the side now with Villa playing a back three.

Tommy Elphick

The former Bournemouth man knows this league well and could be a key asset to any promotion push.

James Chester

Chester also knows how to perform at this level and should start.

Leandro Bacuna

Bacuna is being asked to do the wing-back role and that might just be his best position.

Mile Jedinak

Jedinak is the battler Villa needed so should start.

Jack Grealish

Grealish will play but needs to start proving himself again.

Ashley Westwood

Westwood is a good footballer and will have to get on the ball a lot for Villa to win.

Jordan Amavi

Villa’s other wing-back, he’ll be key to giving the side some width against the Magpies.

Jordan Ayew

Ayew has the trickery to cause Newcastle problems and the Villains will need him on top form.

Rudy Gestede

Gestede can be a real handful with the right service and with Villa’s wide formation they’ll be hoping to do just that this weekend.

No rebote, Diego conferiu.

O importante é a vitória.
