Eu saúdo a vocês.

Michael Dighton named Canada's coach

Michael Dighton, the former Tasmania batsman, has been named Canada’s new coach. Dighton replaces ex-Sri Lanka wicketkeeper Pubudu Dassanayake, who took over as Nepal’s coach on October 1.A handy batsman, Dighton, 35, has played 71 first-class matches, including some on the English domestic circuit for Derbyshire and Hampshire. He has also played the Clydesdale Bank 40 (England’s domestic 40-over tournament) for Netherlands, as an overseas signing. He assisted the Netherlands squad during the 2011 World Cup, and has previously worked as head coach of Cricket Australia’s National Emerging Talent Rookie Squad and batting coach of the Tasmania Under-23 side.Vimal Hardat, Cricket Canada’s vice-president, said the board were pleased to have Dighton heading the national team. “We are thrilled to have someone of Michael’s background on board to direct our drive to the 2015 Cricket World Cup and restore our position as one of the top Associate Cricket Nations,” he said. “Michaels drive and determination to succeed will be a welcome addition to our programmes.”Dighton said he would initially focus on the basics. “I will place much emphasis on physical preparation [fitness] and fielding, the two areas that we can control and always improve on,” he said. “I will encourage an attacking and dynamic brand of cricket, combined with smart decision making.”

McDermott tells Johnson to get a grip

Having waded through the many technical tweaks and tips offered by Troy Cooley over five years, Mitchell Johnson’s first advice from his new bowling coach Craig McDermott must have seemed fiendishly simple: a new grip.Cooley and Johnson had been close to inseparable on Australian tours since the summer of 2006-07. But McDermott’s suggestion, that a more pronounced split of Johnson’s fingers across the ball might contribute to better seam position and greater control, indicates that a fresh pair of eyes could be useful for a bowler who at 29 has never quite managed to assume the spearhead’s mantle. The greatest difference between Cooley and McDermott is the international experience they each have to call on. Cooley’s modest Sheffield Shield career with Tasmania bears little comparison with McDermott’s 291 Test wickets and countless spells under the most intense of cricket’s spotlights.”It’s good to have Craig on board with his Test experience,” Johnson said in Brisbane. “I had a good relationship with Troy Cooley and worked really well with him, but having Craig there with his Test and international experience is going to be a big boost for us.”I haven’t worked on too many technical [aspects] with him; just my fingers, split fingers and things like that. Nothing too out there, but just little things here and there, which has been good. But having him on tour in situations where we might come off the field and he might see something that we’re not seeing, it’ll be good to have that experience.”Johnson’s mention of split fingers brought its own memory – many can recall McDermott’s split-finger slower ball, which comically confounded Aravinda de Silva and Hashan Tillakaratne during a World Series ODI in Melbourne in 1996. But when pressed to expand, Johnson related the fact that his stock grip had perhaps encouraged him to spray the ball in the past, and that his new mentor had suggested the adjustment.”I bowl with my fingers close together and I don’t have as much control with the ball,” he said. “So this just helps me stand the seam up a little bit; or hopefully that’s the plan – to stand that seam up a little bit and give me that balance with the ball.”I’m not going to be fiddling around with my wrist or anything like that at this [point. I’m going on 30 now and I don’t think fiddling around too much like that is going to help me.”Subtle advice on technique and tactics, plus a large helping of empathy, is a formula that has worked well for numerous bowling coaches across the globe. Former Indian bowling coach Venkatesh Prasad describes himself as more of a tactical advisor than a technical seer, while David Saker’s emphasis with England’s attack in Australia was as much about knowing the conditions as the bowling action.Johnson agreed that McDermott would be useful as he seeks to draw a line under the Ashes gremlins in his action that first surfaced in 2009 and returned again last summer, either side of a freakishly incisive spell on the second day of the third Test in Perth. Either side of the lunch break Johnson had appeared unplayable, but by the end of the summer England and their attendant Barmy Army had enjoyed very much the better of the duel.”That’s just the pressure of the game sometimes,” Johnson said. “I struggled over in England in an Ashes series [in 2009] and probably let it get to me. Towards the end of that series I started to feel okay, but I guess it’s just the build-up and the pressure of an Ashes series.”I haven’t found it in any other series, I haven’t struggled that much with the pressures, but it is a big thing, the Ashes. I haven’t thought too much about it but I would like to get better at it.”I think for me I put too much pressure on myself, because I try to bowl the perfect ball all the time and then I put too much pressure on myself. And in a big series like that you just can’t do that.”You look at their [England’s] squad, they’d been playing well for a long time, they’ve got a very good opening pair at the moment, a bit like a Justin Langer/Matthew Hayden sort of relationship. They’re working really well as an opening pair. So there’s a few things that come into it but I think I definitely try to bowl that perfect ball too much.”Johnson’s mental approach is now to close the gap between his best and his worst, so he may deliver sturdy spells even if the planets have not aligned as they did at the WACA ground last December.”Today was a perfect example, I didn’t feel at my best today but still worked through it and bowled good enough I think,” Johnson said. “I had a chat to Craig about it after and he said I looked pretty good. Having him and his experience as well is going to help me in the rest of my career.”Definitely it’s something I’m going to keep working on. You have your bad days but you’ve still got to go out there and perform, I’ve just got to find that balance.”That right balance, and the right grip.

Mohali gears up for 'mother of all finals'

Hotels are full, tickets are being sold for ten times their original price, and the Prime Minister will be there. Such is the build-up for India v Pakistan

ESPNcricinfo staff26-Mar-2011Games don’t come much bigger than an India v Pakistan World Cup semi-final, so it’s no surprise Mohali, which will host the match on March 30, has become the most sought-after destination in India. The Indian prime minister Manmohan Singh will be there, and so will industry heavyweights, and IPL franchise owners, Mukesh Ambani and Vijay Mallya. Not only is there a mad scramble for tickets on the black market, but all the hotels are reportedly booked within a 25-kilometre radius and there is even a shortage of parking space at the airport for those with private planes. The stakes for the game were raised (as if a place in the World Cup final was not enough) on Friday when Singh sent a note to Pakistan prime minister Yousuf Gilani, and president Asif Zardari, inviting them both to the contest, the first such gesture since the 2008 Mumbai terrorist attacks.”I propose to be at Mohali to watch the World Cup semi-final match between India and Pakistan to be held on 30th March,” the note said. “There is huge excitement over the match and we are all looking forward to a great game of cricket that will be a victory for sport. It gives me great pleasure to invite you to visit Mohali and join me and the millions of fans from our two countries to watch the match.”Security
The Chandigarh police are taking no chances with such a high-profile match, and have completely cordoned off the Pakistan team hotel. They have also given the team a list of dos and don’ts during their stay in the city. “More than 1000 policemen have been pressed into service,” HS Doon, senior superintendent of Chandigarh Police, told the . “We are using jammers and the team has been told to co-operate with us. Any team member, who wishes to go out of the hotel, will have to inform us at least four hours in advance.”An ICC official told ESPNcricinfo that there is an additional buzz in addition to the excitement and passion in Mohali considering India are playing Pakistan. “It is a mother of all finals even if it is just the semis,” the official said. It is also understood that the ICC is happy with the security arrangements at the venue. “The level of security that was expected is in place,” the official said.Accommodation
Hotels all over the city are packed and have been forced to turn away people. “We are full over the next five days,” Saera Dir, the sales and marketing head for the Taj Hotel, told the . “For the last one week, we have been politely declining requests from at least 50 clients every day.”Of course the lack of space in Chandigarh is not something that will deter an intrepid fan. “We could not get any bookings in Chandigarh or Mohali,” Gurgaon-based businessman, Rohan Gupta said. “The room we got was at a resort nearly 25km from the stadium. But we don’t mind as long as we can enjoy the excitement of the match in the stadium.”Tickets
Tickets have been sold out for days, but fans are still thronging to the PCA Stadium in the vain hope of finding them from somewhere. “I have been coming here since Monday, but have not been able to get any ticket,” Vikas Sharma, a young executive with a private company, told the .The rush for tickets has naturally led to allegations of black-market profiteering, with tickets going for as much as 10 times their original value. “The tickets are available, but you pay Rs 3000 for a Rs 250 ticket and shell out Rs 10,000 for a Rs 1000 ticket,” Ram Kumar, a bank officer in Chandigarh, told the same newspaper. The Punjab police admitted this is a problem but said they will do what they can to stop the illegal sale of tickets. “It is a problem and many cricket lovers will suffer due to this,” Mohali district police chief Gurpreet Singh Bhullar said. “We will try our level best to check black-marketing of tickets. Our officials will be deployed in plain clothes around the stadium and at various other locations to catch the black-marketeers.”

“We will try our level best to check black marketing of tickets. Our officials will be deployed in plain clothes around the stadium and at various other locations to catch the black-marketeers.”District police chief Gurpreet Singh Bhullar

While fans wanted to know how the local cricket association sold tickets in bulk to individual buyers, the association said it was powerless to stop the practice. “Our preparations are going on in full swing for this match,” GS Walia, joint secretary of the Punjab Cricket Association, said. “We cannot do anything directly in case of black-marketing. People came, stood in queues and bought tickets. Now if they sell them to anybody else in black, how can we keep a track? It is not under our control. But there will be enough security checks to ensure the genuineness of tickets.”Transportation
According to the , space at Chandigarh airport is limited so private jet owners have been asked to arrange for their planes to drop them off, then head off to places like Amritsar or Delhi to park for the day, before returning to pick them up after the match. Those fans who have to fly commercial airlines should be prepared to pay a huge premium, reported , a business paper. Business-class tickets are sold out, and an economy ticket for the 30-minute flight between Delhi and Chandigarh will cost between Rs 7407 and Rs 10,482 on March 29. A flight to Chandigarh from Delhi on any other day costs about Rs 3200.”With business-class seats already sold out, and full-service fares reaching the maximum levels – Rs 9000 on Delhi-Chandigarh and Rs 22,000 on Mumbai-Chandigarh – the airlines will need to add some excess capacity to take advantage of the peaking demand for 29-31 March,” Aloke Bajpai, the founder of travel portal iXiGO.com,” told . “Even tertiary sectors to Chandigarh, such as Jaipur-Chandigarh, are selling at Rs 8000.”Meanwhile the also reports that a special bus service is being set-up at Wagah, which is at the border between India and Pakistan, to make it easier for Pakistan fans to get to the stadium. About 6500 visas are expected to be issued for the game.Advertising
The overwhelming interest in the game has also proved to be a godsend for the broadcaster, ESPN Star Sports (ESS). Four years ago, ratings tumbled after India were knocked out in the group stages, making it much harder to sell advertising space. Things couldn’t be more different this time around. “There are very few spots left,” Sanjay Kailash, executive vice-president, ad sales and new media for ESS told the . “We are looking at substantially higher rates compared to what we were selling before the tournament started.”

Joe Crann critical of Sam Hutchinson error

Sheffield Star journalist Joe Crann criticised Sam Hutchinson’s error in Sheffield Wednesday’s 1-0 defeat away to Sunderland in their League One semi-final first leg clash.

The Lowdown: Owls beaten at Sunderland

The Owls took on the Black Cats at the Stadium of Light on Friday evening, in what was their biggest game of the season to date.

Wednesday fell behind through Ross Stewart’s goal just before half-time, following Hutchinson’s mistake in his own half, as he allowed the striker to nick the ball off him and score.

Darren Moore’s side failed to find an equaliser in the second half, in what was a hugely disappointing performance overall by the team.

The Latest: Crann critical of Hutchinson

Taking to Twitter during the game, Crann made his feelings known about Hutchinson’s key moment, in what he also described as a ‘huge mistake’ and particularly infuriating due to his good display up to that point:

“So frustrating, that… Sam Hutchinson had been SWFC’s best player on the pitch up until that mistake.”

The Verdict: Bad moment for dependable figure

Hutchinson has been such a dependable figure over the years, putting his experience and quality to good use, but this was a night to forget for him.

His error was so uncharacteristic, with the 32-year-old dawdling in possession, and he eventually lost four out of six individual duels (66%) when all was said and done, according to Sofascore.

Hutchinson is a mentally strong figure who won’t let the mistake affect him, however, and it wouldn’t be a surprise to see him produce a big performance in the second leg at Hillsborough on Monday night.

Phil Hay drops Leeds United team news hint

Leeds United are back on the road again on Monday night with a showdown against Crystal Palace in the Premier League.

Heading into this clash off the back of a 3-0 win against Watford, Jesse Marsch’s side have the chance to secure another victory and move away from the relegation zone.

[snack-amp-story url=”https://www.footballfancast.com/web-stories/read-the-latest-leeds-news-transfer-rumours-gossip-marsch-raphinha-dest-philhay” title=”Read the latest Leeds news!”]

In terms of what the travelling squad could look like for Monday’s match, it seems as though an early clue has been dropped over the possible inclusion of two players in particular.

What’s the news?

In response to the announcement of the Leeds U23 starting XI for their league clash against Manchester City on Friday evening, journalist Phil Hay had this to say about the absence of attacking duo Joe Gelhardt and Sam Greenwood.

He said: “Marsch hinted that certain players might be missing tonight ahead of Palace away on Monday. Cresswell and Summerville start but Gelhardt and Greenwood not involved.”

This suggests that rather than be involved with the U23s on Friday, the attacking pair could be in the senior squad to take on the Eagles at Selhurst Park.

Fans will be delighted

Taking into account how Leeds have striker Patrick Bamford out with an injury, having the option to rely on Gelhardt and Greenwood if needed will be the best way forward for Marsch.

Should the young duo find themselves in the squad on Monday, as they were for the win over Watford, this would surely delight a lot of Leeds fans, especially if they manage to get any minutes on the pitch or even grab a goal or assist.

As this is what Greenwood managed to do when he provided the assist for Jack Harrison’s goal at Vicarage Road after replacing Dan James, Marsch could give him a chance to shine once again this time around as he is evidently improving game by game.

Gelhardt, meanwhile, has enjoyed a breakthrough campaign where he’s become a fan favourite in Yorkshire. He has found the back of the net twice and provided three assists in 14 league appearances this season, showing that he is also capable of being an attacking threat for the side.

As a result of their youthful exuberance and newfound importance to Marsch’s charges, supporters will be delighted that they’ll be rested and fully fit to play on Monday evening.

Moving forward, with Leeds needing to rack up as many points as possible to make sure they don’t end up back in the Championship, the 48-year-old could be relying on the young duo for the remaining games of the season.

Spurs: Gold drops Doherty update

Antonio Conte has been dealt a huge injury blow concerning Tottenham Hotspur right-back Matt Doherty.

What’s the latest?

That’s according to Alasdair Gold, with the football.london journalist revealing in a post on Twitter that the 30-year-old now looks set to be ruled out for the remainder of the season after sustaining a knee injury in the 4-0 win over Aston Villa on Saturday afternoon.

In his tweet, Gold said: “Understand it’s bad news for Matt Doherty and Antonio Conte. The Irishman is out for the rest of Spurs’ season and more.”

[snack-amp-story url= “https://www.footballfancast.com/web-stories/read-the-latest-spurs-news-transfer-rumours-gossip-martinez-dybala-spence-conte-2” title= “Read the latest Spurs news!”]

Conte will be fuming

Considering how impressive Doherty has been for Conte since his arrival in north London last November, the news that the right-back looks set to be ruled out for the remainder of 2021/22 is sure to have left the 52-year-old manager fuming.

Indeed, after being used sparingly over the Italian’s first 11 Premier League fixtures in charge of the club – starting just once in these games – the £10.8m-rated full-back looked to have gained Conte’s favour over the club’s last ten league outings – starting all but two of these fixtures, being given the nod from the off in the last seven consecutive top-flight matches.

It is not difficult to understand why this was the case, as the £74k-per-week defender was beginning to show the sort of form that convinced Spurs to part with £14.7m to bring him to north London back in August 2020 – with the Irishman having scored two goals and registered four assists over his last 11 Premier League fixtures.

However, following Gold’s latest update, it would now appear as if the former Wolverhampton Wanderers full-back’s campaign has been brought to a premature end, something that – considering just how close the race to secure a top-four spot currently is – will undoubtedly come as a huge blow to Conte and his side.

Leeds plotting moves after Aaronson blow

Leeds United are still looking to bolster Marcelo Bielsa’s playing squad before Monday’s transfer deadline despite suffering a blow to top target Brenden Aaronson…

What’s the word?

Indeed, the American midfielder has been subject to intense interest from the Yorkshire giants this January transfer window but RB Salzburg have rebuffed all of their advances so far, including a £15m bid last week.

However, according to reliable Express journalist Ryan Taylor, those at Elland Road are working hard to bring in alternative options.

“We haven’t really heard much on specific names, but from some of the people I’ve spoken to, it seems like there is other stuff going on [than the Aaronson pursuit ]behind the scenes,” he revealed to GIVEMESPORT.

Exciting news

Now, this is surely going to alleviate some of the fears from the Whites’ faithful.

It’s no secret that manager Marcelo Bielsa desperately needs reinforcements to his depleted squad, having had to deal with a major injury crisis at Thorp Arch throughout the season.

Earlier this month, he was left with eight academy prospects on a bench of nine players for a Premier League clash against West Ham United and is still missing several key stars, including skipper Liam Cooper and defensive midfielder Kalvin Phillips.

[snack-amp-story url = “https://www.footballfancast.com/web-stories/latest-leeds-united-lufc-transfer-rumours-gossip-bielsa-orta-radrizzani-elland-road-updates” title=”Read the latest Leeds news, transfer updates and much, much more!”]

That’s why Leeds have seemingly targeted an engine room addition in Aaronson, a role they have been looking to strengthen for several windows now but with a lack of options available, that has become a priority.

However, they will struggle to convince the Austrian champions into a sale before Monday, leaving that deal likely to happen in the summer instead.

But it still leaves Bielsa in a tricky situation, so it’s got to be hugely encouraging to see this latest update from Taylor, who is usually on the money with Premier League transfers.

United have been linked to other midfield names in recent times, including Derby County gem Jason Knight, Marseille powerhouse Boubacar Kamara and long-time target Nahitan Nandez.

Either way, the fact that Victor Orta and co aren’t resting on their laurels after missing out on Aaronson is hugely exciting news and many supporters should be thrilled.

It could be a busy few days in west Yorkshire.
