Berg and Junker back on Celtic’s radar

Celtic are once again looking at moves for Bodø/Glimt midfielder Patrick Berg and Urawa Red Diamonds forward Kasper Junker ahead of the January window, according to Celtic Underground.

The Lowdown: Summer links

As we know, the Hoops were extremely busy over the summer in terms of incomings and outgoings, with attackers Kyogo Furuhashi and Jota starring in Glasgow.

However, Celtic’s only senior midfield addition, James McCarthy, has struggled for game-time under Ange Postecoglou, whereas Giorgos Giakoumakis has had his fitness and injury issues.

Two men who were linked with a Parkhead switch over the last 12 months are Berg and Junker, and it seems as if they could be on the Hoops’ radar once again ahead of the winter window.

The Latest: ‘Apparently’…

Celtic Underground took to Twitter late on Tuesday evening, claiming that Berg and Junker are two players being looked at once again. They tweeted: “Patrick Berg and Kasper Junker being looked at again apparently.”

Norway international Berg has played primarily as a defensive midfielder this season, whereas Junker has already scored 16 goals for his new club after only moving to Japan in April in a deal worth £1.89m, with both players out of contract in December 2022.

The Verdict: Interesting…

You’d expect that interim Celtic CEO Michael Nicholson will know all about the pair following their respective transfer links over the summer, so this latest update is certainly an interesting one.

Kieran Devlin claimed earlier this month that he believes the boat may have been missed in regards to a move for Berg following an impressive performance against AS Roma in the Europa Conference League.

Meanwhile, Junker has only just changed clubs, so it may come as a real shock if the Hoops manage to sign the pair during January.

It appears as if transfer business will materialise at Parkhead during the winter window, but whether that will involve Berg or Junker remains to be seen. Still, Celtic could try their luck.

Simon Jones undergoes more scans

Worcestershire are awaiting the results of scans on Simon Jones to find out if he is likely to be able to play again in the near future.Jones, who has been dogged by injury since he was forced to miss the final Test of the 2005 Ashes series, underwent surgery on his knee in April and at the time it was expected he would be able to play the second half of the summer. A comeback in the second team had tentatively been set for June 30, but his knee is still causing concern and so the county have sent him for another scan.”We’ll know more in the week,” Steve Rhodes, the county’s director of cricket, told the Press Association. “We’re waiting for some stuff from the surgeon. We’ve got the results of scans and tests and all sorts of stuff to come and we’ll get the surgeon to tell us what’s going on. Then we’ll know exactly what the plan of attack will be.”

MCFC fans react to Sterling news

Manchester City fans have been reacting to the news that Pep Guardiola is set to play Raheem Sterling in a central role.

Since making the move to the Etihad Stadium, £81m-valued Sterling (Transfermarkt) has been a star for the Citizens. In 302 appearances in all competitions, he has found the back of the net 115 times, while also providing 88 assists (Transfermarkt).

He has also helped the club win three Premier League trophies amongst plenty of other pieces of silverware.

However, he has started just two league matches this terms and does not appear to be a key member of Guardiola’s plans currently.

According to Martin Blackburn, Sterling has had a heart-to-heart with Guardiola, who has now assured the 26-year-old he will be given more chances in a central role, a position he has scored 21 times from 44 games in throughout his career.

The news was shared on Twitter by @City_Xtra, and it attracted plenty of attention from the supporters. They took to the social media platform below.

Let’s see what the fans had to say about the Sterling news below

“He need to perform if he want play more. Thats the direspectful for other player that work harder to get play in the team”

“I am sorry bro I ain’t starting you over ferran its just facts”

Credit: @retroman09

“i appreciate the fact that he seems to want to be commited to city and wants to do the best for us, but in a central role when he isnt in form at all just doesent sound like a good combo at all. the reality is we are playing better with him out of the squad, dont see a way back”

“This is disrespectful to Torres”

“Current Sterling would not bench Grealish, Jesus, Foden or Mahrez so the wing is a no go. Even Ferran has done well enough to keep CF. Sterling gets a game to show he’s good enough to stay at city and if he doesn’t impress. Thanks for all youve done king”

“Then he needs to perform. It’s simple. He’s been shocking for several seasons now. His slump in club form isn’t just the odd game. He loses the ball far too much. Doesn’t get enough assists. And lacks goals at present.”

Rangers: Ianis Hagi impressed v Germany

Rangers have a rare weekend off from competitive action as international matches take over this week ahead of a return to the Premiership against Hearts on 16 October.

Whilst Gers fans may be twiddling their thumbs waiting for their club to play again, the international break provides an opportunity for them to watch players in a different setting whilst playing for their countries.

It also affords the players a chance to show Steven Gerrard, assuming he keeps track of their international performances, that they deserve a place in the Rangers XI. One player who may have needed this boost is attacking midfielder Ianis Hagi, who has failed to register a goal or assist in his last three appearances for the Scottish giants.

The 22-year-old lined up for Romania against European giants Germany in a World Cup qualifier on Friday night and put in a superb performance to put himself firmly in Gerrard’s thoughts ahead of next weekend.

The Gers playmaker was unable to help his team to victory as Romania succumbed to a 2-1 defeat, but his performance stood out as he scored the opening goal and caught the eye with the rare moments he had on the ball throughout the match.

He stunned the home crowd with a sensational goal to open the scoring on the night. He weaved inside and out of several Germany players, nutmegging Chelsea’s Antonio Rudiger, before unleashing a pinpoint left-footed effort into the bottom corner past the despairing dive of Barcelona’s Marc-Andre ter Stegen. This meant that he completed 100% of his attempted dribbles in the game, picking his moment with perfection to punish Germany.

Along with his goal, Hagi put in lots of hard work defensively. As per SofaScore, he won 75% of his duels as well as making one interception, one clearance and one tackle for Romania. This shows that he was not afraid to track back and put his foot in despite playing out wide, proving that he has a willingness for the more industrious side to the game.

Gerrard will surely have been impressed with this performance from Hagi as it shows what he can do in matches where his team may not dominate possession, in the Europa League for example. The 22-year-old proved that he can produce moments of magic whilst also being disciplined defensively, which could increase his chances of starting at Ibrox next week.

Marsh introduces baseball star to the rising ball

Culture clash: Shaun Marsh lines up next to Manny Ramirez of the LA Dodgers © AP

It wasn’t the same as when Babe Ruth met Don Bradman, or Shane Warne showed Michael Jordan his flipper, but Shaun Marsh has traded tips with the baseballer Manny Ramirez in a cross-cultural exchange in Arizona. Marsh, the Australia one-day international, showed Ramirez, the LA Dodgers and former Boston Red Sox slugger, some of things needed to succeed as a batsman in the game Robin Williams called baseball on valium.Ramirez stepped on to the Arizona Cricket Club field on Wednesday to test himself against a “cricket pitcher” and managed to connect during the eight-ball over. “I have faced some tough pitchers before, but we don’t have to ever swing at a bouncing ball that is rising as it passes us,” Ramirez said after padding up. “Shaun is a great hitter and he gave me some great pointers.”I hadn’t watched much cricket in the past, but the game is a lot like baseball. Shaun said I definitely have a future in the game.”Marsh was impressed after his short coaching clinic. “I thoroughly enjoyed coming to the United States and being able to spend some time sharing my passion for the sport with someone who is just as passionate about his sport as Manny is,” he said. “Maybe he can return the favour next spring.”There are a few similarities for Marsh and Ramirez: they are capable of launching balls out of stadiums and are both out with hamstring problems. Marsh hurt his leg during an ODI against New Zealand last month while Ramirez is taking a break from spring training after re-injuring himself during a practice fixture against the Colorado Rockies on Sunday. The major difference between the pair is Ramirez has just signed a two-year contract with the Dodgers worth US$45m, dwarfing the US$30,000 Marsh earned playing for King’s XI Punjab in the inaugural Indian Premier League. The television channel Directv, which will show will show the upcoming IPL in the United States, organised the get-together of the two big hitters.Back in 1932 Bradman chatted to Ruth at a New York Yankees-White Sox game and in 1994 Warne caught up with Jordan, who was then playing for the White Sox. Warne later wore 23, the number made famous by the basketballer, on his one-day shirts.

India rely on Mithali Raj for victory

India ensured that they did not have to depend on net run-rates to qualify for the Super Six by beating Sri Lanka by 35 runs at the Bankstown Oval in Sydney. It was India’s second victory in the group stage while Sri Lanka finished without a win from three games.India’s victory was far from convincing. They once again relied on Mithali Raj for most of their runs and would have been left with a paltry total if not for her contribution. She made 59 out of 169 against England and today she scored an unbeaten 75 out of a total of 137 for 7.Raj began her innings with India in early trouble at 11 for 2, a position which deteriorated rapidly with wickets falling regularly with hardly any addition to the score. Six of the top eight batsmen failed to score more than five but Raj remained steady through the innings. Even so, India were struggling at 78 for 7 in the 40th over before they were lifted by a quick 24 from their captain Jhulan Goswami.Raj hit only one four in her 120-ball innings and added 59 for the seventh wicket with Goswami. Their partnership lifted India to 137, which was less than what they had managed against England. Udeshika Prabodhani, Chamari Polgampola and Suwini de Alwis picked up two wickets each for Sri Lanka.Raj was happy that her performance came at a vital moment. “It came at the right time. We did struggle in those initial overs when we were four down for 38 runs. So there was a lot of pressure,” she said. “I think our only concern would be our batting. It has really let us down against England and even today where we collapsed quite early.”Faced with a small target, Sri Lanka’s openers began slowly but steadily. Dedunu Silva and Polgampola added 37 but they fell in quick succession, leaving Sri Lanka on 41 for 2. These wickets triggered a collapse and the chase never got back on track. Apart from Eshani Kaushalya who made 20, none of the others made significant contributions . Sri Lanka were dismissed in the 45th over, 35 runs short of the target. Amita Sharma played a big hand in India’s win, taking three top and middle order wickets to finish with 3 for 19 in ten overs.

Tottenham Hotspur: Spurs facing Takehiro Tomiyasu setback

Tottenham Hotspur have been jolted in their pursuit of Bologna defender Takehiro Tomiyasu, with one of their London rivals locked in talks to sign the 22-year-old, as relayed by David Ornstein on Twitter.

The Lowdown: ‘Dependable’ Tomiyasu has excelled in Italy

Producing an impressive level of consistency since moving to his current club in 2019, Tomiyasu has shown a dependability in both centre-back and right-back positions.

Adept at mopping up sticky situations at the back, the Japan international obtained a commendable average of 3.3 clearances per Serie A game last season [WhoScored].

Earning adulation for his performances, he was labelled a “very, very dependable player” by Italian football expert Conor Clancy earlier this month [Football FanCast].

The Latest: Late twist in the tale as Arsenal look to strike

Tomiyasu’s form has seen Tottenham Hotspur register serious interest in his services this summer, even having a £15.5m bid rejected for the Japan international in early July [Sky Sports].

However, there could now be a sting in the tail. According to The Athletic journalist Ornstein on Twitter, Arsenal are said to be working on a deal to sign Tomiyasu before tonight’s transfer deadline.

In a surprise turn of events, the Gunners reportedly have ‘talks underway’ to sign the 6 foot 2 ace, although any movement may be dependent on positional departures at the club [The Athletic].

The Verdict: Royal arrival could soften Tomiyasu blow

Losing out on Tomiyasu may come as a source of frustration for Tottenham, but the seemingly imminent arrival of Emerson Royal will help to soften the blow for Nuno Espirito Santo.

A regular for Bologna in 2020/21, the former Sint-Truiden defender featured 33 times in all competitions, scoring twice [Transfermarkt].

Following that up with a strong showing at the Olympic Games with his native Japan, helping them to reach the semi-finals [Eurosport], it is clear to see why Spurs wanted to secure his signature.

Nevertheless, with three senior right-backs on the books in N17, any notion of Tomiyasu pitching up at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium this window has probably run its course.

Celtic predicted XI to face St Mirren

Celtic have tapped into a rich vein of form in all competitions and are swatting their opponents aside with relative ease of late.

The Hoops have won their last five competitive matches, scoring an impressive 18 goals in the process, against Jablonec (two legs), Hearts, Dundee and AZ Alkmaar.

They now face St Mirren in the Premiership as they look to make it six wins on the bounce and two wins from three in the league. Celtic Park will surely be rocking after recent results and that should create a sublime atmosphere to inspire the players during the match.

Who will be able to enjoy it from the start? Here is our predicted XI for this afternoon…

We are predicting that Ange Postecoglou will make two changes to his XI from the 2-0 win over AZ Alkmaar in the Europa League earlier this week.

The first player we believe will come back in is Odsonne Edouard. The former PSG attacker started and scored in Celtic’s 3-2 win over Hearts in the League Cup last weekend and was rested for the clash with AZ Alkmaar, with Liel Abada coming in on the wing and Kyogo Furuhashi moving centrally.

However, Abada failed to take his chance as he produced a disappointing performance. He was given a FotMob rating of 6.5, the lowest in the side, as he created zero chances and only had 30 touches during his time on the pitch before being substituted. This is why we think that Edouard will be brought back into the team for the clash with St Mirren today.

The other change we are predicting is James McCarthy for Tom Rogic. Celtic signed the Irishman from Crystal Palace on a free transfer this summer but he has been restricted to two 15-minute substitute appearances thus far.

Postecoglou labeled McCarthy as “top-class” upon the midfielder’s arrival at Parkhead. The 55-year-old said: “I’m delighted that we have signed two top-class players in Joe and James. Both of them have a wealth of experience at both club and international level, and that is something which can only benefit the squad, and I’m looking forward to working with both of them.”

This change is not because of Rogic’s form, but rather to give McCarthy a chance to show off his quality in front of the home fans for his full debut. It also gives the Australian midfielder a rest to make sure he is fully fit for the second leg against AZ Alkmaar next week.

With the Hoops on a winning run, we are backing Postecoglou to stick with the other nine members of the XI from the win over the Eredivisie club so as not to disrupt momentum too much.
