Liverpool’s lacklustre midfield showed where FSG must strengthen

Comparing it to the lofty standards Liverpool have set for themselves this season, their defeat against Arsenal on Wednesday night, and the sheer manner of it, was arguably one of their worst displays of the campaign.

Jurgen Klopp’s side looked uncharacteristically sloppy both in defence and further forward, making simple mistakes, and routinely passing the ball out of play when under no real pressure.

And it was of course two major howlers on the part of Virgil van Dijk and Alisson that gifted the Gunners all three points, but whilst the duo had a rare off-night, the central midfield area was an area of big concern.

Can you name every one of Liverpool’s top goalscorers in the PL era?

World Class score: 95% | Expert score: 80% | Veteran score: 65% | Intermediate score: 45% | Amateur score: 30% | Try Again: 5%

Both Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and Georginio Wijnaldum in particular failed to really grab the game by the scruff of the neck, and when Arsenal appeared set on defending the width of their penalty area, showed none of the guile or creativity needed to break them down.

Oxlade-Chamberlain – valued at £25.2m- and Wijnaldum – valued at £36m – did virtually nothing all game to threaten the Arsenal back-line, with very few runs made in behind the opposition defence, and no cute passes or trickery to beat a man.

As per Sofascore, they combined for just one shot on target, and that too being a relatively tame half-volley from Oxlade-Chamberlain. They also only managed to pull off one successful dribble between them, and had just 99 touches altogether – to put that into context, Andy Robertson, Liverpool’s left-back, had 128.

The Reds sorely needed one of their more central players to offer up something more than just intensity with their running, and it was quite telling that Liverpool looked a whole lot more dangerous when Naby Keita took to the field. The Guinea international completed all three of his attempted dribbles, and in the second-half, the Reds racked up 17 total shots on goal, compared to just the seven in the first.

Whilst Klopp has clearly found a formula that works, Wijnaldum and Oxlade-Chamberlain’s lack of creativity showed exactly where FSG must look to strengthen this Liverpool squad in the summer.

And despite missing out on striker Timo Werner to Chelsea, there may just be another position the Reds could do with some reinforcements.

Tottenham Hotspur: Spurs face competition for Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg amid interest from Ajax and Everton

Tottenham face stiff competition for Southampton star Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg as Ajax have now entered the race, amid interest from Everton.

According to Voetbal International, Ajax are looking to steal a march on Spurs, as Hojbjerg has entered the final 12 months of his contract.

The Dane was stripped of the captaincy by Ralph Hasenhuttl after refusing to sign a new deal.

Spurs have been chasing the former Southampton captain for quite some time now, as Sky Sports revealed Jose Mourinho has made him one of his top targets in the summer.

The ex-Bayern Munich ace, who made 25 appearances for the Bundesliga champions, is represented by Pini Zahavi. His agent has been in discussions with the Lilywhites to hash out terms ahead of a potential move.

Mourinho has a strong relationship with Zahavi, which may make negotiations between the two clubs a whole lot easier.

The super-agent has been responsible for some of the biggest transfers in the world, as he helped to orchestrate Neymar’s world-record transfer from Barcelona to Paris Saint-Germain.

However, it won’t be plain sailing for Spurs, as Hojbjerg has worked with Erik ten Haag during his time in charge of Bayern Munich’s reserves.

The 24-year-old has played 30 games in the Premier League for the Saints this season, supplying one assist, taking 1.4 shots per game, averaging 1.5 interceptions and successfully completing 1.6 clearances on average (WhoScored).

Ajax are convinced this could play a big factor in their attempts to persuade the midfielder to move away from the South Coast.

Spurs have struggled to fill the void ever since Mousa Dembele left for China. Tanguy Ndombele hasn’t worked out as well as intended, as the club’s record signing has been involved in a public dispute with Mourinho.

Hojbjerg is strong on the ball, reads the game well, and is a powerful threat in the air. All of these qualities are exactly what Spurs have been looking for lately, and Levy must make every effort to sign him, no matter the cost.

Crystal Palace: Fans go crazy reminiscing over ‘Crystanbul’

A lot of Crystal Palace fans are raving over a dramatic thriller against Liverpool which was played six years ago at Selhurst Park.

The club posted highlights of the game, in which recently promoted Palace were battling for safety and had to face the Reds who were fighting for the league title against Manchester City, via BBC Sport. No one could have expected the 90 minutes that the footballing world was about to see, as Liverpool eventually held a 3-0 lead and the away end were singing for them to score more.

However the final ten minutes saw a historic comeback as a deflected strike from Damien Delaney gave the club the faintest of hope, before a brace from Dwight Gayle including an 88th minute equaliser meant the South London side salvaged a draw and damaged Liverpool’s chances of winning the title.

The great comeback made Selhurst Park erupt and gave the Palace faithful a very memerable night under the lights in the division. The game is now dubbed ‘Crystanbul’ as the comeback was similar to Liverpool’s in the Champions League final in Istanbul.

Here is what fans had to say following the tweet:

– Personalidade, humildade.

Tottenham fans react to Mauricio Pochettino statement

Loads of Tottenham Hotspur fans on Twitter have been reacting to a tweet from Alasdair Gold, who was relaying a statement provided to the League Manager’s Association by former Spurs boss Mauricio Pochettino following his exit earlier this month.

The Argentine’s reign with the north London outfit came to an end following their 1-1 draw at home to Sheffield United just over a fortnight ago, with Jose Mourinho replacing him less than 12 hours after the initial announcement.

The 47-year-old has certainly taken his time before saying anything about his departure, saying that he did his best to achieve the aims he was given in his first meeting with owner Daniel Levy.

While this season may not have been the best, leading the club to a Champions League final and securing plenty of top-four finishes in the Premier League represented great progress, and it is a fact that hasn’t been lost on those supporters responding to the statement.

While one said “it’s happening again” with a crying meme, another said they were “gutted” that the former Southampton man wasn’t given longer in the new stadium – perhaps rightly so, but something clearly wasn’t right on and off the pitch this term before Pochettino went.

Here is just a selection of the Twitter reaction…

Juventus fans slam Federico Bernardeschi on Twitter after AC Milan win

It was quite the weekend for Maurizio Sarri and his Juventus squad. The Bianconeri had to face off against AC Milan in a big Italian derby and after a tough bout, the hosts ended up snatching away all three points with a rather narrow 1-0 victory.Watch Italian Football Videos With StreamFootball.tv Below

And interestingly enough, it was Sarri’s big decision to take off Cristiano Ronaldo and bring Paulo Dybala into the mix that got them the winning goal in the end.

But not everyone had a brilliant game, not in the slightest.

Many of the Juventus fans were simply not satisfied with Federico Bernardeschi and they were quick to slam him and his recent display for their club.

Bernardeschi tweeted after the game with his message saying how Juventus always find a way to win, but some of the fans responded saying that they can do without him and that he is not really the reason for their success.

You can see some of their harsh tweets down in the collection below:

Tottenham fans love Danny Rose’s omission against Red Star Belgrade

Danny Rose was left out of the Tottenham Hotspur squad altogether for Tuesday’s Champions League clash with Red Star Belgrade.

The England international has been a regular for Mauricio Pochettino’s side this season – making nine appearances in all competitions – despite being strongly linked with a move away from the club over the summer.

Rose was not included in Tuesday’s European affair, though, with Ben Davies selected at left-back and Juan Foyth providing the cover on the bench.

It remains to be seen what the future holds for the defender, who will see his contract at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium expire in the summer of 2021.

However, it would be fair to say that the majority of Spurs fans were pleased to learn that Rose was nowhere to be seen against Red Star Belgrade, who were thumped 5-0.

Toby Alderweireld was also left out of the squad with the Belgium international’s contract set to expire at the end of the season.

Liverpool boss Klopp hasn’t done enough to sit amongst club legends, claims Mills

We’ve heard some things in our time. After being crowned champions of Europe last season, Liverpool are primed to break the Premier League record for most games won in a row (18) when they face their struggling arch-rivals Manchester United. But for some, this isn’t enough.Watch Liverpool Live Streams With StreamFootball.tv Below

Danny Mills might not be everyone’s first port of call when it comes to sourcing Liverpool opinions and he won’t have put himself in Reds’ fans good books with his latest verdict.

During a recent interview with talkSPORT, a bastion for absurd opinions and claims, the former Leeds and Manchester City midfielder questioned whether Jurgen Klopp’s one trophy, the Champions League, would be enough to put the German amongst the Liverpool greats.ÂMills played for 14 years and won one trophy, the League Cup (often considered the Micky Mouse cup).
