Marsh brothers hand Warriors big win

A scintillating 53-ball century from big-hitting Shaun Marsh led Western Australia to a convincing win over New South Wales at the WACA. Former Australian opener Geoff Marsh watched from the stands as son Shaun hit the Blues attack to all corners, racking up a 168-run Big Bash record-partnership (for any team and any wicket) with fellow-opener Wes Robinson. So swift was Shaun’s second fifty that when he reached his hundred, Robinson was on just 54 – having beaten Shaun to the half-century mark. The Blues bowlers had started steadily through Josh Hazelwood and Mitchell Starc, backed up by some darting offspinners from Dominic Thornely, and had restricted the hosts to 87 off the first 12 overs. However, when Thornely exited the attack, Marsh unleashed fury on Dwayne Smith, Moises Henriques, and the often wayward Aaron Bird.He blasted six fours and the same number of sixes, including several effortless drives over long-off as the Warriors set the Blues an imposing target for victory. The visitors came out swinging with David Warner falling early to a good catch by Luke Pomersbach at cover from a lethal cut shot. Usman Khawaja fell shortly after trying to pull Michael Hogan and when Henriques was bowled trying to loft Brad Knowles, the Blues looked in dire straits.Aaron Heal ended a mini fightback from Steve Smith and Phil Jaques, dismissing them in consecutive balls and when Mitchell Marsh was handed the ball for the first time in Twenty20 cricket, the visitors were in for a tough time. The younger Marsh brother showed he’s got plenty of talent with the ball, regularly hitting the mid-130s kph, and gave father Geoff even more to smile about, taking 4 for 6 in just 2.2 overs to wrap up a comprehensive win.The Warriors moved to third on the table and will host Victoria on Sunday night, while the Blues dropped back to fifth (with a net run-rate of -1.667) with home matches against Queensland and South Australia to come.

Tottenham: Davinson Sánchez eyed by Napoli

According to reports by Il Mattino (via Sport Witness), Tottenham centre-back Davinson Sánchez has been shortlisted as an option for Napoli as they seek to replace Kostas Manolas in the January transfer window.

The Lowdown: Sánchez a regular under Conte

The 25-year-old struggled for playing time under former Spurs manager Nuno Espírito Santo, remaining on the bench for the last four games of the Portuguese’s tenure at the club. However, the Colombian has been a regular for Antonio Conte in his back-five system, having played the full 90 minutes in Spurs’ last three games.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/spurs-latest-updates-5/” title=”Spurs latest updates!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

Sánchez is an important component of Tottenham’s defence as he leads the squad in offsides won per game (0.6), demonstrating his astute presence in the back-line.

The Latest: Napoli eyeing Sánchez

According to reports by Il Mattino (via Sport Witness), Napoli are searching for a replacement for Manolas following his transfer to Greek side Olympiacos.

Il Mattino have claimed that Sánchez is on the list of players that the Azzurri are monitoring ahead of the January transfer window. The Serie A title challengers have a limited budget, so it has been said that they will look for a potential loan deal whereby they only need to pay the player’s wages.

The Verdict: Exit seems unlikely

Arriving at Spurs in a deal worth £42m, it does not come as a surprise that top European clubs are interested in the 25-year-old defender. Former Tottenham boss Mauricio Pochettino once labelled Sánchez ‘a beast’, whilst his one-time Ajax manager Peter Bosz claimed that ‘he was a monster’.

Given the Colombian’s increased game-time at Spurs this season, it seems unlikely that Conte would let Sánchez leave halfway through the campaign, especially as the 52-year-old likes to utilise three central defenders in a back-five formation.

If Napoli want to pursue Sánchez, it seems highly unlikely that anything will come to fruition in the January transfer window, especially on a loan deal.

Leeds United suffer Rodrigo injury blow

Leeds United manager Marcelo Bielsa has suffered a fresh injury blow with Rodrigo now ruled out for the Premier League clash against Chelsea this weekend.

What’s the story?

A statement from the club read: “Rodrigo has been suffering from bilateral heel pain for some time. The player and medical staff have deemed it necessary to reduce his activity for the time being, in order to aid his long-term recovery.”

Bielsa will be worried

If you thought things were just beginning to ease up slightly for Leeds on the injury front with the returns of Luke Ayling and Patrick Bamford last weekend, think again.

The Whites’ disastrous luck with injuries has struck again, and not only will they be without talisman Kalvin Phillips for an extended period of time, their club-record signing in Rodrigo is set to be missing for a while too.

The Spaniard has scored just twice in 15 games in all competitions this term, and what has been particularly disappointing is that he has been given a runout as the sole centre-forward in Patrick Bamford’s absence.

The former Valencia man has shown flashes of his ability, and it was a particularly impressive performance against West Ham which really caught the eye of The Athletic’s Phil Hay.

Writing on Twitter, he said: “I thought Rodrigo’s false nine performance on Saturday was worth another look. Lots to admire and ponder in his positioning, movement, interplay and switches of position with Raphinha. More displays like that could spark Leeds United into life.”

With Rodrigo now out for the foreseeable future, even more of the goalscoring onus is placed on the shoulders of Bamford, who could really do with some help having just returned from injury himself.

This latest update on Rodrigo is sure to have Bielsa worried.

Meanwhile, Leeds could sign a Rodrigo upgrade in this star…

Celtic had a nightmare on Vasilis Barkas

Having joined Celtic in what was a £4.5m deal back in the summer of 2020, the general opinion at Parkhead was that the Bhoys had signed their number one goalkeeper for, at the very least, the length of the 27-year-old’s four-year contract.

Indeed, upon Vasilis Barkas’ arrival in Glasgow, The Athletic’s Celtic correspondent, Kieran Devlin, wrote an article suggesting that the Greece international was the solution to Celtic’s goalkeeping crisis, with the journalist dubbing the shot-stopper “calm, commanding, tall – a complete keeper.”

Devlin was not the only person who appeared convinced of the £20k-per-week man’s ability, with Antonis Oikonomidis stating that Barkas’ best traits are “his flexibility and his calmness.”

The Greek journalist continued: “He’s quick to save with his hands, and knows how to save with his feet, how to catch crosses and corners, how to command his defence. He’s strong, he’s tall [6ft5], he’s a good all-round keeper – a complete keeper.

“But his calmness is his best quality, how stressful the occasion doesn’t matter and he is always very calm. He knows how to handle pressure. He never looks worried even in big games.”

However, after making just 23 appearances in all competitions for Celtic to date, only one of which has come under the management of Ange Postecoglou this season, recent reports have suggested that the Hoops are ready to cut their losses on the shot-stopper, with a January departure looking increasingly likely for the 27-year-old.

It is not difficult to see why Postecoglou is looking to move the £2.52m-rated ‘keeper on, as, over his 15 appearances that came in the Scottish Premiership last season, Barkas made just one save and conceded 0.7 goals on average per fixture – with these returns seeing him earn a seasonal SofaScore rating of just 6.79, ranking him as the club’s joint ninth-worst performer in the league.

And, with summer signing Joe Hart now being Celtic’s undisputed number one, the club’s nightmare regarding Barkas’ signing has only been highlighted further, with it appearing incredibly unlikely that the Hoops will recoup their £4.5m outlay, or even his current Transfermarkt value, upon his potential sale this winter.

However, when taking into account the player who Tam McManus dubbed as “horrendous” has also cost Celtic around £1.4m in wages since his arrival at the club – bringing the total amount of money spent on the shot-stopper to a whopping £5.9m – it would very much appear a good idea to get the 27-year-old’s wages off of the club’s books in January, even if it means giving him away for peanuts.

Spurs’ Eric Dier disappoints in Conte debut

Antonio Conte was given a damning insight into the mess into which he’s walked at Tottenham Hotspur as he took charge of his first match in the UEFA Europa Conference League on Thursday night.

Spurs got revenge on Vitesse by defeating them 3-2 in north London but it wasn’t without its scary moments. Five goals, three red cards. An absolutely chaotic second-half. And 90 minutes which epitomised their struggles.

Cristian Romero saw red for a second bookable offence which left the Italian in the lurch on the hour mark but he wasn’t the only player to let his new manager down on the night.

One of those was also his defensive partner Eric Dier, who will be a lucky man to keep his place under Conte in the coming weeks and months.

As the most central of the three defenders, the 27-year-old was present on the ball more than any other Lilywhites player, registering 82 touches, but he was a little off-par with his ball-playing, managing a passing accuracy of just 86%, which was slightly below his average in the Premier League.

However, more worryingly, he failed in his defensive duties, winning only two of his five duels (40%), whilst he was dribbled past once, committed one foul and lost possession ten times, as per SofaScore.

The Englishman was also partially at fault for Jacob Rasmussen’s goal as he was well beaten by the visiting centre-back inside the penalty area to make the game 3-1.

It’s easy to see why some supporters have often dubbed him a “liability.”

Dier’s dismal display was described as “unconvincing” by the Evening Standard’s Dan Kilpatrick in his post-match ratings column. It’s also rather telling that Hugo Lloris received his fair share of plaudits as the Frenchman often bailed out his defenders with some fine saves throughout the game.

The £19.8m-rated colossus, who is reportedly earning around £85k-per-week in N17, won’t have impressed the 52-year-old too much as his and the team’s defensive frailties were put on full show against the fifth-placed side in the Eredivisie.

Newcastle set to miss out on Marc Overmars

A worrying update has emerged on Newcastle’s pursuit of Marc Overmars, regarding the sporting director role at St. James’ Park.

What’s the talk?

According to Duncan Castles of The Times, the Dutchman will not be taking the job and the Magpies will now be looking at other candidates, although it remains unclear as to whether he rejected an offer or was not given the choice.

This comes after The Mirror reported last week that PIF had opened talks with the former Arsenal man over a deal to join the club.

Gutting

This update from Castles will surely leave Newcastle fans feeling gutted. Overmars has enjoyed success in a behind-the-scenes role at Ajax since becoming their director of football in 2012, having previously been a technical coach in the academy after retiring as a player – representing the likes of Barcelona and Arsenal.

CIES Football Observatory recently named Ajax as the top training club in Europe in 2021, having trained the most footballers playing in 31 top divisions across the continent. 81 players are currently playing professional football in Europe after coming through the academy at the Dutch giants, showing the incredible work being done by the Amsterdam club.

[snack-amp-story url= “https://www.footballfancast.com/web-stories/check-out-the-latest-newcastle-pif-news-martinez-ward-prowse” title= “Read the latest Newcastle news!”]

Overmars, along with manager Erik ten Hag, has created an environment where young players have a pathway to the first team and the right conditions to thrive when they get there. This has resulted in the likes of Frenkie de Jong and Matthijs de Ligt coming through the ranks before sealing £75m+ transfers to Barcelona and Juventus respectively in recent years.

The Dutch director, therefore, could have joined Newcastle and installed a similar philosophy in an attempt to unearth the next Alan Shearer or Paul Gascoigne. Magpies supporters would have no doubt enjoyed this as it would mean more homegrown players potentially coming through their ranks to play in the first team. Mix that with some new, experienced, signings and there would have been reasons to get excited.

This is why the update from Castles will be gutting for the Toon Army to read, as Overmars could have been an excellent appointment for the club given his impressive track record of developing youth with Ajax. It will be interesting to see where PIF go now in their pursuit of a figure to work alongside whoever the new head coach ends up being.

Kent in Rangers squad vs Brondby

Many Glasgow Rangers fans have been left buzzing as some early team news ahead of their game at Brondby in the UEFA Europa League has emerged.

Speaking in his pre game press conference ahead of the match, Steven Gerrard has now revealed that Ryan Kent will travel with the squad after training with them, while Ryan Jack has also been training and has an ‘outside chance’ of being involved on the weekend, although Glen Kamara is currently rated at ’50/50′ to be able to play after receiving a knock on his ankle.

Nonetheless, the Ibrox faithful we’re particularly pleased to hear the news of Kent’s return, given how long he has been out injured now.

The Light Blues have only managed to win four of the seven matches in the Scottish Premiership without him (Transfermarkt), with the 6-1 demolition away at Motherwell on the weekend the only real convincing performance.

With them currently lingering in third place in their group, the winger’s return will no doubt boost their chances of qualifying for the knockout stages – he has bagged five times and provided 11 assists in his Europa League career.

Southampton: Walcott’s value has plummeted

Martin Semmens was appointed CEO of Southampton in 2019 and has overseen a number of transfer windows whilst working with Ralph Hasenhuttl at St. Mary’s.

The pair have worked together in five windows since Semmens was made CEO and that has seen countless players arrive and leave the south coast club, some successfully and others, not so much.

Sometimes you can land a player who is on the rise and making progress in their career. For example, Southampton signing Virgil van Dijk from Celtic for £14m before later selling him on to Liverpool for £76m, showing that they were able to sign someone who had scope to develop further and increase their value.

This is a profitable way to go about player recruitment and that is a prime example of how it can work. Southampton made £62m in profit on that particular investment, whilst enjoying Van Dijk’s talents on the pitch in the Premier League in the intervening period.

However, sometimes it can go the other way and a player comes in already declining. This is where it can get tricky as they come in at a certain level of quality on x amount per week in wages and then the levels drop as time goes on, whether that be due to their age or other factors at play.

One example of this is a current first-team player in the form of ex-Arsenal forward Theo Walcott, who Semmens has had a nightmare with.

The former England international joined Southampton on loan from Everton in the summer window of 2020, before signing permanently, on a free transfer, in 2021.

Three years ago, Walcott was valued at £18m by Transfermarkt following a transfer to Everton from Arsenal, having scored 108 goals in 398 matches for the Gunners after joining them from Southampton as a youngster.

He then struggled to find his form at Goodison Park, scoring 11 times in 85 games. This saw his value drop to £5.4m upon his switch to St. Mary’s on loan in 2020, with the winger managing three goals and three assists in 26 matches for the Saints last term.

Walcott’s numbers were declining and his value continued to plummet as he hit a low of £4.5m after signing for Southampton permanently earlier this year. This is a £13.5m decrease in three years and shows that he has been on a downward spiral that started before he rejoined the Saints and has continued throughout his time at the club.

He was earning a reported £55k-per-week on loan, before cutting his £150k-per-week Everton salary in half to earn £75k-per-week this term. This means that he earned roughly £2.9m in his loan spell and is set to earn the best part of £8m from his permanent contract.

So, whilst Walcott may have signed for the Saints on a free transfer, he could end up costing the club over £10m by the time he has left. This means that Semmens has splashed out a big chunk of change on a player who is clearly on a downwards trajectory, and still falling, money which could have been spent on a younger player with potential.

Therefore, Semmens has had a mare with the veteran winger he has signed an out-of-form player whose value is continuing to decrease on big wages. This money could have been better spent elsewhere and that is why signing Walcott could be seen as a mistake.
