Leeds United: Bielsa must consider permanent signing of loanee Jack Harrison

Despite only being 22-years-old, Jack Harrison has already experienced a whirlwind of a career to date.

The winger moved to the United States as a teenager and emerged as one of the most promising talents in high school football. After one year of representing Wake Forest University in the Atlantic Coast Conference, he was drafted as the number one pick in the Major League Soccer SuperDraft in 2016 by Chicago Fire, before immediately being traded to New York City FC.

After two impressive seasons with the club, Harrison moved to Manchester City last year, spending the remainder of the 2017/18 campaign at Middlesborough. Now on loan at Leeds United, the England under-21 international has shown glimpses of his talent under Marcelo Bielsa with his latest appearance against Millwall particularly catching the eye of the club’s supporters.

With the Whites currently fighting it out with Norwich City and Sheffield United for automatic promotion in the Championship, Harrison has the opportunity to make a crucial impact in the final seven games. If he is able to demonstrate an improvement to his ability in the final-third, he could create an ultimatum for Bielsa to have to consider in the summer.

The winger clearly has the potential to develop into a player who could easily thrive in the top flight of English football and so if Leeds do secure promotion in May, they could consider permanently signing him at the end of the season. A move to Elland Road could benefit Harrison as he is unlikely to start for a City side who boast the likes of Raheem Sterling, Leroy Sane and Riyad Mahrez in the positions that he currently occupies for the Whites.

Therefore, for the sake of his career, it may be a good idea to consider a switch to the Yorkshire-based outfit if Bielsa decides that he wants to keep him at the club. Leeds themselves – potentially missing out on Daniel James – would be picking up a real talent and one with a huge sell-on value, so it’s a deal that’d make sense, despite Noel Whelan criticising him earlier this season when speaking to BBC Radio Leeds, relayed by HITC.

What do you think Leeds fans? Should the club consider a permanent move for Harrison in the summer? Or should they focus on bringing in another player in his position? Let us know below.

Transfer focus: Barcelona open door for Man City to reignite interest in Luka Jovic

[ad_pod ]

Manchester City’s most pressing transfer objective appears to revolve around their endeavour to sign a new defensive midfielder to succeed Fernandinho at the base of their midfield.

But every time Pep Guardiola and Txiki Begiristain identify a dream target they are usurped by a fellow European giant. First Chelsea swooped in to steal Jorginho from under their noses, and Barcelona have become the latest nemesis to frustrate the champions by agreeing a deal for Ajax’s Frenkie de Jong.

The Catalan giants have waved goodbye to Xavi and Iniesta in recent years and Sergio Busquets’ future departure out of the Nou Camp will seal the end of an iconic era in Catalonia. Their decision to add De Jong was clearly designed to smooth the transition process – one which has already been aided by the signing of Arthur – and, barring Ajax, of course, City were the biggest losers from the deal.

Looming on the horizon is another transfer conundrum for City’s bigwigs to dissect: finding a worthy replacement for Sergio Aguero. On the surface that is about as unenviable a task one could be entrusted with, but the rise of Luka Jovic has revealed a talent who has showcased the level of potential you would expect from the Argentine’s heir.

And, while Barcelona had been threatening to haunt City in the transfer market for the second time with a deal for the Eintracht Frankfurt sensation, Mundo Deportivo journalist Francesc Aguilar has claimed that they have cooled their interest due to the enormity of his potential price-tag and the fact they are unwilling to replace Luis Suarez.

According to a report from the Daily Mail published in February, City are keeping tabs on the 21-year-old attacker. Now that Barcelona have cooled their interest, though, it’s the perfect time for City to revive their long-standing desire to bring Jovic to the club.

The Serbia international only turned 21 shortly before the turn of the year, yet his goal scoring record points towards a level of experience which extends well beyond the formative stage he finds himself in. A return of 24 goals from just 38 appearances underlines his prolific ability in the final-third, while the fact he is yet to score from outside the penalty area this season reveals where his dead-eyed expertise predominantly lie.

There is a suggestion that perhaps Jovic is too similar to Gabriel Jesus in that respect but, with the right level of exposure to Guardiola’s methods at an early age, he could blossom into a complete forward on Aguero’s level. The stylistic transformation of Raheem Sterling from conventional winger to goal-hungry attacker attests to Guardiola’s ability to fine-tune the weaker aspects of a budding talent’s repertoire.

Red Star Belgrade’s general director Zvezdan Terzic once claimed “Jovic will become the best striker in Europe”, and his glowing spell in the Bundesliga has added a weight of legitimacy to that sensational verdict.

With Barcelona reportedly out of the running for one of the most coveted signatures in Europe, City have a dream opportunity to bring Aguero’s heir to Manchester.

Aston Villa fans lose it over John McGinn performance

[ad_pod ]

John McGinn. He can play a little bit.

The 24-year-old followed his brace against Nottingham Forest during the week by scoring once in Aston Villa’s 3-0 win over Middlesbrough on Saturday afternoon.

Villa signed the midfielder from Hibernian last summer and he has proved to be outstanding in the second tier of English football.

According to WhoScored, as well as scoring and assisting Anwar El-Ghazi at Boro, McGinn had four shots, three dribbles and boasted a pass success rate of 90%.

As expected, the Villa supporters were absolutely delighted with what they saw from the 13-time Scotland international on the afternoon and many took to social media to lavish praise on him.

Villa are now sixth in the Championship following an excellent run of form and if McGinn continues to produce then Dean Smith’s side will certainly take some stopping.

A selection of the Twitter reaction from the Villa fans can be seen below:

Todd Astle in New Zealand Test squad

The uncapped legspinner Todd Astle has been named in New Zealand’s Test squad for their upcoming tour of Sri Lanka. Astle will have a strong chance of making his debut in the spin-friendly conditions, given that Jeetan Patel is the only other slow bowler in the squad, with Tarun Nethula having been axed and Daniel Vettori ruled out after suffering an Achilles tendon problem during the World Twenty20.New Zealand have named a 15-man squad for the two Tests, in Galle and Colombo in the second half of November, and a 15-man group for the one Twenty20 and five ODIs that precede the Tests. Three members of the World T20 squad have not been included for the limited-overs games: the injured Vettori; the fast bowler Doug Bracewell; and the opener Martin Guptill, whose workload is being managed. The Test squad features the batsman Rob Nicol, who played two Tests against South Africa in March before he was dropped and treated as a limited-overs specialist for the next few months. But the only uncapped player in the group is Astle, the Canterbury legspinner, who has picked up 127 first-class wickets at an average of 34.79 in a career spanning seven seasons.Astle, 26, was the second-leading spinner in the Plunket Shield last summer, with 31 victims at 38.35, and the national selection manager Kim Littlejohn said his all-round skills gave him the edge ahead of other bowlers.”He has the ability to contribute in all three facets of the game and deserves his opportunity after a putting in consistent performances over a number of seasons,” Littlejohn said of Astle. “Tarun Nethula has missed out on selection this time. We think he would benefit from a return to regular first-class cricket where he can get some overs under his belt and stake his claim for reselection.Littlejohn also said the wicketkeeper-batsman BJ Watling was not included in the Test squad as it was considered better for him to be given some game time in the Plunket Shield. “BJ Watling will return to New Zealand after the one-day matches,” Littlejohn said. “He has spent a lot of time touring but has had limited opportunities to play and we believe it is best for his development if he’s made available for the upcoming Plunket Shield fixtures.”Trent Boult, Andrew Ellis and Tom Latham were all named in the squad for the T20 and ODIs, having not been part of the World T20 group. Littlejohn said the decision to leave Bracewell out had been made to allow him to work on some technical problems ahead of the Test series.”Doug Bracewell will miss the short-form matches so he can spend some time working on a few minor technical issues with his action,” Littlejohn said. “The best approach is to spend time getting things right in domestic four-day cricket ahead of the Test series.”Ronnie Hira and Adam Milne have been included in the ODI squad having previously being selected in T20 sides. We have been impressed by the development of both players and they offer the side something a bit different.”It has been a demanding period for the Black Caps, especially for the players who compete in all three forms. As part of the on-going management of player workload we have decided to rest Martin Guptill for the T20 and ODI matches so he can refresh for the upcoming international commitments.”The tour begins with a T20 on October 30 in Pallekele, before five ODIs from November 1 to November 12. The Test series runs from November 17 to November 29.Test squad Martin Guptill, Rob Nicol, Daniel Flynn, Brendon McCullum, Ross Taylor (capt), Kane Williamson, James Franklin, Kruger van Wyk, Doug Bracewell, Tim Southee, Todd Astle, Neil Wagner, Trent Boult, Jeetan Patel, Chris Martin.ODI and Twenty20 squad Rob Nicol, Brendon McCullum, Ross Taylor (capt), Kane Williamson, BJ Watling, James Franklin, Jacob Oram, Tom Latham, Nathan McCullum, Andrew Ellis, Kyle Mills, Tim Southee, Trent Boult, Ronnie Hira, Adam Milne.

Crystal Palace: Jairo Riedewald didn’t deserve to be dropped by Roy Hodgson

Before a ball had even been kicked in the encounter between Crystal Palace and Sheffield United last time out, we detailed why Jairo Riedewald deserved to keep his place in the starting XI despite Patrick van Aanholt’s return to training.

The former Chelsea and Sunderland left-back had been out with a hamstring injury for several weeks, enabling Riedewald to step in over the festive period and beyond, with good effect.

His first outing following injury to Van Aanholt came when he replaced the Dutchman against West Ham on Boxing Day, where the former Ajax man leapt in front of a Robert Snodgrass snot which looked destined for the net in the 87th minute – it appeared to prevent a goal, and then Jordan Ayew went on to net a winner in the 90th minute.

Excellent displays against Norwich and Arsenal ensued – both of which were met with praise by Crystal Palace supporters on Twitter – while the 23-year-old even won the club’s Player of the Month award for January.

So, after Roy Hodgson dropped the No.44 to the bench as soon as Van Aanholt returned ahead of the Sheffield United game, it left a sour feeling.

After all, Riedewald had been forced to wait for his chance. With no reported injury problems, he failed to make a single Premier League appearance last term, and almost joined SC Paderborn last summer.

So, when a chance arose, he did nothing but grab it with both hands – it was unjust of Hodgson to immediately remove him from the lineup upon Van Aanholt’s return.

What sort of message does that send out? One which says: “Thanks for your extreme patience and efforts, but you will never have a chance of becoming a first-team regular no matter how well you perform”?

Premier League experts will get full marks: The ultimate quiz on top flight transfer flops…

It was cruel of the former England manager, and may well have sent out a negative vibe to the rest of Crystal Palace’s fringe players as well.

In other news, this piece of transfer news is a testament to Dougie Freedman’s scouting ability…

Everton ready to bid £15m for Cedric Soares

[ad_pod ]

According to The Sun (print edition, page 53, Friday 11th January 2019), Everton are readying a £15m bid for Southampton’s Cedric Soares, with the south-coastal club willing to sell the Portuguese right back this month – he would surely be an upgrade on Seamus Coleman at Goodison Park.

What’s the word?

Well, The Sun reports that the Toffees are keen on signing the 27-year-old this month and that the Saints will accept £15m for his services – just over twice what they paid Sporting in 2015.

Having brought in some big names from some big clubs such as Barcelona over the summer, Everton looked in a pretty strong position to be challenging for the top six, but there are clearly some weaknesses in the squad that are preventing them from becoming the finished article.

Seamus Coleman is getting on a bit and has looked the weaker of Marco Silva’s four starting defenders – while signing Soares would not be transformative enough to prevent recent drubbings from occurring again, he would be a huge upgrade on the Everton man.

A right-back in his prime

Coleman has established himself as one of the Premier League’s best right-sided defenders in recent years but has gone slightly off the boil this season and, at 30, may not be able to keep up the lung-busting runs that made him so effective at both ends of the pitch for much longer.

Similarly, Soares hasn’t been quite at it this campaign but, in all fairness – until the arrival of Ralph Hassenhuttl – none of the Saints squad had been. However, the diminutive defender has proved his quality over the years and won the Euros with his national side in 2016 – he would undoubtedly be an upgrade on the Irishman.

At 27, the right-footer is in his prime and, for £15m, represents great value for an Everton side who have been largely building for the future rather than finding quality in the present.

What do you think, Evertonians? Would you like to see Marcel Brands bring Cedric Soares to Merseyside this month? Let us known by voting in the poll below…

Newcastle Injury News: Paul Dummett to hand Benitez defensive gift

[ad_pod ]

Rafa Benitez is to go from a defensive headache to joy as the international break ends with Paul Dummett returning from injury.

The key Newcastle United left-back has missed the Tyneside club’s last two fixtures, at home to Leicester City and away to Manchester United, with the Magpies going on to lose both ties.

Dummett initially still faced an international call-up for UEFA Nations League matches over the break, but pulled out of Ryan Giggs’ Wales squad without playing a minute in order to receive further treatment to his hamstring strain.

The return of Dummett will bring joy to Benitez, as the Spaniard will have a key figure in the St James’ Park ranks back amongst his options for the visit of Brighton to the northeast.

Premier Injuries mark the Newcastle born defender at a 75% chance of playing at the weekend for the Toon, who called on his services in every game this season until injury struck.

Returning ever-present

Having been an ever-present member of Benitez’s team this season before developing the thigh injury, his absence triggered a question for the Spaniard on who could feature in his place.

The 22-year-old Kenedy initially stepped in at left-back having previously been utilised in midfield, but this lasted just one match before right-back Manquillo was brought in to the fold in his place.

The makeshift nature of Dummett’s replacements highlights the need at Newcastle for the Welshman’s return, with no clear alternative at the ready.

Should Newcastle find themselves in a repeat of last year, when the man capped three times by his country was ruled out for 16 matches through a hamstring injury, the January market must be used on Tyneside.

Rare to be a short absence

Dummett’s two-match hiatus signals a glimmer of fortune at St James’ Park, for all but one of the Welshman’s previous spells out have proved lengthy.

The 16-match  spell on the sidelines last season was the 27-year-old’s fifth hamstring injury of his career, having also suffered an injury to his knee back in 2015.

Excluding his current absence, 292 days have passed with the left-back unable to play, missing 33 matches in total.

Selling Chuba Akpom is the right move for Arsenal

Arsenal’s summer transfer window has arguably been one of the best the club has had in the last few years.

With the transfer window ticking down, Arsenal have completed most of their summer business and will now only be looking to sell off some players to help bolster their budget and remove some of the deadwood from the squad.

The Gunners are returning from their tour pre-season tour of Singapore which saw them beat PSG but lose to Atletico Madrid, and with there will likely be a flurry of players departing the squad as the club trims its squad for the season. According to Goal.com, Greek Super League, PAOK are to make a £2 million bid for Arsenal striker Chuba Akpom.

The Breakdown

The Arsenal academy player has been at the club since the age of six but according to the report, he is not a part of Emery’s plans for the upcoming season.

At 22-years-old, Akpom has spent loan spells with Brentford, Coventry City, Nottingham Forest, Hull City and most recently, Belgian Second Division side, Sint-Truiden.

The youngster has struggled to translate some of his solid performances at youth level into senior football. Although Akpom managed 35 games for Hull City in the 2015/16 season, the young forward has never progressed since then.

Last year’s loan move to Saunt-Truiden saw him make 10 games, scoring five goals but with Eddie Nketiah, Lucas Perez, Danny Welbeck, Pierre Emerick-Aubameyang and Alexandre Lcazette all ahead of him in the team, selling Akpom seems a wise move.
