Arsenal’s 3 worst players v Man City

Arsenal may have felt very aggrieved to have lost 2-1 at home to Manchester City in Saturday’s Premier League encounter.

They were playing so well against the reigning champions at the Emirates Stadium – going a goal up through Bukayo Saka before Granit Xhaka gave away a penalty for Riyad Mahrez to equalise – until Gabriel found himself sent off for two quick yellow cards which turned the game on its head, as Rodri bundled in the winner in injury time.

Using statistical experts SofaScore, The Transfer Tavern have now analysed who the three worst performers (to have played at least 45 minutes) for the Gunners were on the day:

Aaron Ramsdale (6.0)

Perhaps unlucky to come in third-worst, as he could do nothing really for both goals, Ramsdale was given a overall rating of 6.0 by SofaScore.

Admittedly, the goalkeeper failed to make any saves and also gave the ball away on 22 separate occasions from his 38 touches, the most out of any player on the pitch.

Granit Xhaka (5.8)

While given the joint-worst rating (5.8) among the Arsenal line-up by SofaScore, Xhaka is second on our list through other factors.

Although he gave away the penalty for a foul on Bernardo Silva, he looked fairly solid up until that point.

However, the Switzerland international lost out on seven of his duels in total and failed to register a shot, successful dribble, key pass, cross or accurate long ball. He actually recorded fewer touches than Ramsdale (35) and also lost possession twice.

Gabriel (5.8)

Perhaps unsurprisingly, Gabriel was rated as the Gunners’ joint-worst player as SofaScore gave him a 5.8 rating along with Xhaka.

His two yellow cards were silly to say the least, and it ended up swinging the match in City’s favour. The 24-year-old also lost two duels and failed to block any shots or make any interceptions, losing the ball three times.

In addition, he only had 19 touches in total, the fewest out of any Arsenal player to have started the match.

Mohammad Rameez derails Sialkot

Group BAn astonishing 16 wickets fell on the opening day at the Jinnah Stadium as the Rawalpindi right-arm seamer Mohammad Rameez took 6 for 43 to send Sialkot crashing to 107. The hosts found themselves at an embarrassing 53 for 9, but Naved Arif scored 49 at No.10 to push the score past 100. Only three Sialkot batsmen went past double figures as Rameez wreaked havoc. Rawalpindi made a more assured start but lost four wickets – Arif chipped in with two – and took the first-innings lead. The opening day at the National Ground between the hosts Islamabad and Peshawar was all about three players – Ali Sarfraz, Riaz Afridi and Azam Khan. The ball dominated the bat with 12 wickets falling, and the only batsman to make a significant contribution was Sarfraz, who scored 96 in Islamabad’s total of 256. Afridi, the right-arm seamer took five wickets while Azam, another right-armer, took four to support Afridi. Islamabad’s lower order chipped to beef up the score after a disappointing 111 for 6. Peshawar lost their openers in reply and ended the day at 47 for 2.A combined bowling effort by Lahore Ravi helped bowl out Quetta for 220 at the Lahore City Cricket Association Ground. Shahzad Tareen top scored with 68 but he didn’t get decent support from the rest. His knock came off 110 balls with nine fours. Mohammad Irshad was the leading wicket-taker with three wickets while Waqas Ahmed, Junaid Zia and Aamer Hayat took two each. The Lahore openers were unbeaten at stumps.Continuing his good form from the previous game, where he scored an unbeaten 200, Abbottabad captain Adnan Raees made an unbeaten 101 as his team finished on 279 for 9 against Multan in Okara. Opener Fawad Khan also made a significant contribution – 89- and shared a stand of 97 for the third wicket with Mohammad Kashif, before Raees joined him for a bigger stand of 112 for the fifth. When Fawad was dismissed by Ansar Javed, Multan fought back to pick up quick wickets. Javed ended the day with 3 for 65.Group AHabib Bank Limited grabbed the advantage on the first day against Sui Northern Gas Pipelines Limited in Islamabad. Half-centuries from opener Naeemuddin and captain Azhar Shafiq had taken SNGPL to a comfortable position at 149 for 2, but a collective bowling display from HBL saw to it that the opposition was bowled out for 245. Left-arm spinner Abdur Rehman starred with 4 for 59, and was backed up by fast bowler Sarmad Anwar (3 for 47) and Mohammad Aslam (2 for 37). The trio, with their burst of wickets, caused a collapse, as eight wickets fell for 96 runs. In reply, HBL were in a spot of bother, with opener Shan Masood retiring hurt and Saleem Elahi falling to Asad Ali; they were 10 for 1 at stumps.Water and Power Development Authority held the edge against Karachi Whites at the National Bank of Pakistan Sports Complex. In an admirable bowling effort, WAPDA bowled out Karachi for 170, thanks to three-wicket hauls from fast bowlers Shabbir Ahmed and Azharullah. It could have been worse for Karachi, for they were reeling at 101 for 8 at on stage. A 67-run stand between Akbar-ur-Rehman (58) and No.10 batsman Tabish Khan (21) saved their blushes somewhat. It was Tabish again who led the fight in the WAPDA reply, taking three wickets to put them in a spot of bother at 86 for 4. However, Jahangir Mirza (34 not out) and Ali Azmat (25 not out) stabilized the innings in an unbeaten 42-run stand to steer their team to 128 for 4 at stumps, still 42 runs adrift.Khan Research Laboratories reached a comfortable position against National Bank of Pakistan in Rawalpindi. Driven by half-centuries from Saeed Anwar jnr, Bazid Khan and Zahoor Elahi, KRL reached 319 for 7 at stumps. NBP, boosted by Wasim Khan’s three-for, had limited KRL to 115 for 4, but a 165-run stand between Bazid and Elahi turned the balance in their favour. However, KRL received a setback towards the end of the day, for they lost three wickets for 21. But with Elahi still at the crease on 76, and Jaffar Nazir (14 not out) supporting him in an unbeaten stand of 18, KRL are in with a chance of extending their advantage much further.Sui Southern Gas Corporation dominated Lahore Shalimar on the opening day at the Gaddafi Stadium. Opener Azeem Ghumman smashed an unbeaten 143, laced with 11 fours and a six, to mark a productive day for SSGC, who were boosted by four important partnerships. The lowest stand of the day was between the openers, and it yielded 59 runs. Ghumman then added 79 with Imran Abbas, followed by 65 with Bilal Asad. He signed off day one with an unbeaten partnership of 94 with captain Saeed Bin Nasir (57 not out) to take his team to 297 for 3 at stumps. Lahore face the possibility of an imposing first-innings score, and will have to strike early on the second day to give themselves a chance.Pakistan Customs walked away with first-day honours against Zarai Taraqiati Bank Limited at the Marghzar Cricket Ground. Debutant Ahmed Jamal (4 for 61) and Tahir Mughal (3 for 46) shared seven wickets between them to leave ZTBL at 224 for 8 at stumps. The pair got into the act from the outset, with Mughal dismissing opener Inam-ul-Haq for a duck. Opener Zohaib Khan resisted with a 175-ball, barring a 55-run stand for the fourth wicket, there wasn’t much support from the other end. But the lower order stepped up to the task after Zohaib fell; Mohammad Khalil chipped in with 22 and Kashif Daud made a handy 18 to rally around wicketkeeper Zulqarnain Haider, who remained unbeaten on 59. From a precarious position at 116 for 6, ZTBL recovered to a more respectable position, though Pakistan Customs still hold the cards going into the second day.

Spurs may ‘push the boat’ for Rudiger

Speaking to GiveMeSport, journalist Dean Jones of Eurosport and author of their transfer notebook has made a promising claim involving Antonio Rudiger and Tottenham Hotspur.

The Lowdown: Spurs weigh moves…

As January fast approaches, all eyes will be on whether new Lilywhites boss Antonio Conte gets the sufficient backing needed to turn his side into a Premier League and European force again.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/spurs-developments-2/” title=”Spurs developments!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

Over two years since Mauricio Pochettino guided them to a Champions League final, the first in Spurs’ history, it’s safe to say they haven’t reached those heights since.

Three new managers have come in off the back of the Argentine, with Jose Mourinho and Nuno Espirito Santo both given their marching orders before Conte’s highly-anticipated arrival.

He has been linked with adding a plethora of Serie A stars to his new Tottenham roster and there has even been talk of a £150 million transfer kitty.

Speaking to GMS, a name Spurs could now ‘really’ target is Chelsea star Rudiger, with Jones sharing the latest.

The Latest: Spurs could ‘really’ pull out the stops…

The Eurosport reporter and transfer ‘insider’ claims Tottenham may ‘really’ pull out the stops to sign him for Conte as he makes a promising claim.

“I think Tottenham are willing to really push the boat out to get Rudiger,” he said.

“I think the change in manager would have helped them turn his head a little bit.

“But Rudiger knows he’s basically got a pick of the teams when it comes to when his contract’s up.”

The Verdict: Get it done…

A colossal Champions League-winning centre-half with nearly half a century of caps for Germany, we believe signing the 28-year-old on a free deal is an absolute no brainer.

Currently in his prime, Rudiger has enjoyed a resurgence under Thomas Tuchel and became an undroppable figure in Chelsea’s run to the European Cup final last season.

He’s continued to be a mainstay for Tuchel this campaign, having started ten from 11 of the Blues’ top flight matches so far with only goalkeeper Edouard Mendy equalling that number (WhoScored).

A fixture in Chelsea’s table-topping side, the defender has attracted plenty of praise for his imperious form over 2021. Rio Ferdinand, speaking to FIVE (via The Metro), lavished praise on Rudiger back in late August – calling him ‘unbelievable’ and ‘like an animal’.

The former Man United defender also contested that Chelsea’s colossus has been the ‘best defender in the Premier League’ since Tuchel’s arrival at Stamford Bridge.

If Spurs can really pull out the stops to secure him on a free transfer ahead of next summer, it’s safe to say managing director Fabio Paratici will have orchestrated a masterstroke.

Wolves loan players back with first team

Many Wolves fans have been left buzzing as news emerged on a few of their loaned-out players.

As per The Express & Star, the quartet of Ryan Giles, Dion Sanderson, Connor Ronan and Austin Samuels, who are all out on loan to various clubs this season, are currently back in the Midlands, where they are working alongside Bruno Lage and a reduced first team squad during the international break.

Giles has been playing at Cardiff City and Sanderson is at Birmingham City, while Ronan and Samuels are in the Scottish Premiership with St Mirren and Aberdeen respectively.

All four players have signed new deals with Wolves in the last year, which implies that they have a future at the club, so it is good that they are working with some of the first team squad in order to continue their development.

Division One

Michael Di Venuto scored a career-best 254 not out to lead Durham to 473 for 4 before they declared against Sussex at Chester-le-Street. The hosts, who were on 264 for 2 overnight, lost Gordon Muchall soon after the start, which was delayed by rain to 12.20 pm, but Di Venuto and Dale Benkenstein added 173 for the fourth wicket to put Durham in command. Di Venuto scored Durham’s second-best first-class score and the only chance he had during his innings was on 180 when Ollie Rayner dropped a tough catch at first slip .An interruption for bad light forced Durham to declare in order to have as much time as possible attacking the Sussex batsmen. Michael Yardy led Sussex’s steady reply, remaining unbeaten on 54, but the visitors lost Chris Nash, lbw to Callum Thorp, for 19. Ed Joyce played fluently but had to retire hurt on 32 after getting hit on the elbow by Steve Harmison. Sussex ended the day on 119 for 1.Somerset’s bowlers struck timely blows on a rain-shortened day at Taunton to reduce Nottinghamshire to 77 for 3 at stumps. Andy Caddick had Matthew Wood caught by Arul Suppiah and had Paul Franks caught behind to reduce the visitors to 37 for 2. Suppiah took another catch off the bowling of Charl Willoughby to nip a budding partnership by dismissing Adam Voges for 10. Earlier in the day, Somerset had declared on 401 for 8 after resuming on the second morning at 316 for 5. Ryan Sidebottom competed his five-wicket haul while Peter Trego was unbeaten on 66.There was no play on the second day between Worcestershire and Warwickshire at New Road because of rain.Click here for John Ward’s report from the second day between Lancashire and Yorkshire at Old Trafford

Division Two

Graham Wagg and Tim Groenewald took all seven Kent wickets to fall on the second day Canterbury, reducing them to 249 for 8, to give Derbyshire a chance of securing a first-innings lead. Wagg, who picked up 5 for 83, took his first three wickets with medium pace before turning to left-arm spin for his last two scalps. Groenewald took the other two, finishing with 3 for 67. Kent were struggling at 135 for 6, after Justin Kemp walked across his stumps and was bowled around his legs by Wagg, when James Tredwell and Ryan McLaren added 58 for the seventh wicket. It was then that Wagg decided to resort to spin and trapped McLaren leg before for 29. Wayne Parnell was caught at mid-off soon after but Tredwell dug in and remained unbeaten on 67, with Kent still trailing Derbyshire by 54.A strong performance from the Middlesex top order has given their team the advantage against Northamptonshire at Lord’s. After taking the final Northamptonshire wicket – David Lucas lbw to Tim Murtagh – for no addition to the overnight score of 288, Middlesex’s openers, Sam Robson and Nick Compton, added 167 for the first wicket. It was Middlesex’s highest opening partnership of the season. Robson made 75 and Compton a more aggressive 82 off 94 (he had reached his fifty off only 46) balls to put his team in control. However, their dismissals came in a short span of time and though Eoin Morgan held one end up with 71, the Northamptonshire bowlers chipped away at the other, reducing the hosts to 310 for 6 before rain stopped play. Middlesex will hope that their lower-batsmen stick around long enough to help build a sizeable lead.James Taylor became the first teenager to score a double-century for Leicestershire and led his team into a commanding position against Surrey by the end of the second day at The Oval. Taylor, who resumed this morning on 52, scored an unbeaten 207 while Tom New made 53 and Jacques du Toit, who was playing his first Championship game of the season, cracked 100 off only 123 balls. Leicestershire added 303 runs for the loss of only one wicket, with Taylor and du Toit adding 230 in only 42 overs, before declaring on 593 for 5, giving their bowlers a little more than two days to dismiss Surrey twice. Rain , however, ensured that Surrey did not have to bat today. The second day’s play between Gloucestershire and Glamorgan in Bristol was severely truncated by rain. Gloucestershire were comfortably placed at 337 for 5 at the end of the first day but Glamorgan’s bowlers fought back on the second, limiting the hosts to 400 for 9 before they declared. Glamorgan’s openers, Gareth Rees and Warren Bragg, added 35 runs before play ended.

Southampton: Ferry enjoying time on loan

With Southampton having scored just six goals in their opening eight Premier League games of the season, it’s safe to say Ralph Hasenhuttl’s side have not been in the best attacking form so far in this campaign.

One attacking player that is making a difference away from Southampton is 20-year-old left-midfielder Will Ferry, who is currently on a loan deal from the Saints with League Two club Crawley Town.

Ferry joined Southampton’s U18 side from Bury’s U18s back in the 2017 summer transfer window for an undisclosed fee.

Since then, Ferry has featured in 23 matches for Southampton U18s where he has managed to score seven goals and provide nine assists along the way.

The player has also managed to make 33 appearances for Southampton’s B team, netting five and assisting on seven occasions but has yet to make his senior debut for the Saints.

During his time with Crawley, Ferry has managed to score one goal and provide three assists in ten outings for the club so far this season across all competitions, getting plenty of minutes under his belt which should be very pleasing for Hasenhuttl and the supporters.

In addition to this, Ferry has racked up an average of 1.4 shots per game in League Two as well as 1.3 key passes per game, showing just how much of an attacking threat he has been for the club since his arrival at Crawley.

He’s certainly delivering on the immense promise that made Crawley pounce on his temporary signature with their CEO, Erdem Konyar, saying in August: “Will is an exciting young player.”

Moving forward, if Ferry can keep playing regularly for Crawley until the end of his loan spell and keep adding some more goals and assists to his tally, we feel he could definitely be in contention to eventually make his senior debut for the Saints when he returns at some point.

Given the age of some of Southampton’s current wingers such as Theo Walcott (32) and Nathan Redmond (27), there’s every possibility that Ferry could well be a regular first-team player for the Saints in the future alongside the likes of Nathan Tella and Moussa Djenepo. With that many options on the flanks, however, the boss would have an undoubted dilemma as to who to select.

The Irishman is some way off being Premier League ready but his potential and star qualities lower down the leagues is standing him in good stead.

Steven Gerrard must unleash Fashion Sakala

Rangers travel to Fir Park on Sunday afternoon as they look to extend their lead at the top of the Premiership table.

The Gers went into the weekend two points clear at the summit, with seven wins, three draws and one defeat in 11 top-flight matches.

Steven Gerrard’s side came from 2-0 down to draw with Aberdeen earlier this week in their last Premiership match, with Alfredo Morelos and James Tavernier finding the net.

Imagine him & Morelos

One change that Gerrard must make to the XI is the introduction of Fashion Sakala in place of Romanian forward Ianis Hagi.

Imagine a front three of Morelos and Sakala with Kemar Roofe in support. It could strike fear into the Motherwell defenders, as the trio have contrasting styles and different threats which would allow Rangers to mix up how they play going forward.

Whilst the Zambia international has the pace and movement to make runs in behind and stretch the defence, Morelos can hold up the ball and then find space in the penalty box to poach goals.

Ross Wilson previously hailed the pace and power that Sakala is able to provide for Gerrard’s squad upon the 24-year-old’s arrival at Ibrox earlier in the summer.

The Gers’ sporting director said: “Fashion has had an excellent season in Belgium and we believe he will develop further still working with all of our staff at the training ground. Fashion is a determined, humble and positive guy and we are sure he will fit the group here.

“We wanted to add more pace and power to the group across January and the summer and I am pleased that we have done that, firstly with Scott Wright and now with Fashion Sakala. I know Steven and the coaches are excited to work with Fashion and I am sure that he will further enhance his growing reputation here with Rangers.”

We published an article explaining why Hagi should be axed from the starting XI, and Sakala could be the ideal replacement to come in and form a partnership with Morelos. The Zambian’s aforementioned pace could suit the Colombian’s slower style to create variation in the Gers’ attack, whilst his one goal and one assist in two Premiership starts suggests that he has the potential to make an impact in the final third.

His dynamism could help to unlock the Motherwell defence and create space for Morelos and Roofe to do their damage in the final third. That is why Gerrard must unleash him on Sunday, not least as he has already scored against Graham Alexander’s side this season…

Liverpool linked with move for Ricardo Pepi

Liverpool have so far enjoyed a blistering start to their 2021/22 campaign, having scored 22 goals in eight Premier League games and 11 goals in their first three Champions League matches of the season.

Despite this impressive start to the season in front of goal, however, it seems as though the Merseyside club have their eyes on securing their next long-term attacking star in the near future.

What’s the news?

It has recently been reported by CBS Sport that Liverpool are one of the clubs currently interested in signing FC Dallas striker Ricardo Pepi alongside German duo Bayern Munich and Borussia Dortmund, as well as Inter Milan and Ajax.

Firmino heir?

The 18-year-old, who is currently valued at £2.25m by Transfermarkt, has made 55 appearances for Dallas across all competitions, racking up 16 goals and four assists in the process.

This season has seen the teenage striker – described as “absolutely lethal” by American soccer legend Landon Donovan, who knows a thing or two about scoring goals with a tally of 190 in 492 club games across his career – score an impressive 13 goals in 27 MLS games so far with two assists to his name as well, which is probably why so many European clubs are reportedly interested in signing him.

In addition to his impressive goal tally, the teenager has also averaged 2.4 shots and one key pass per game whilst making four big chances in the process according to SofaScore, showing how much of an attacking threat he can offer.

In terms of a potential move to Liverpool in the future, we feel that Pepi could be a possible long-term replacement for 30-year-old centre-forward Roberto Firmino, who despite his excellent recent form has been questioned in the past over his goalscoring consistency.

Moving forward, we feel that a move for the American youngster is something Liverpool should definitely explore if they can get him for a cheap price, as he could develop and progress at Anfield before potentially growing into a regular first team player further down the line, especially if Firmino leaves the club when his current contract ends in the summer of 2023.

Everton continue to eye Maitland-Niles

The transfer window has only been closed for a matter of a month but Everton are already considering their January targets.

It emerged over the weekend that the Toffees might be contenders to sign Aaron Ramsey from Juventus but he’s not the only Arsenal associated player linked with a move to Merseyside.

What’s the word?

An individual Everton were keen on signing throughout the final stages of the summer window was Ainsley Maitland-Niles.

They lodged a bid to sign the player on loan that Arsenal unfortunately rejected.

The man in question wasn’t happy with that decision, taking to Instagram in dismay as he revealed he just wanted to play football.

The Gunners had been seeking a permanent deal for the versatile defender and midfielder but Everton could return with an improved offer in January.

According to reports (Via Transfer Market Web), Rafa Benitez’s side are planning a winter swoop for the England international.

Gray 2.0

It’s well documented just how little money Everton have to invest in the playing squad at the moment.

Benitez and Marcel Brands acquired five players over the summer but only one of them cost a transfer fee.

That happened to be Demarai Gray, someone who at just £1.7m is quickly becoming the bargain of the summer.

Although Everton parted ways with a measly sum to sign him, there were questions raised about whether he’d be consistent enough for the Toffees.

During his time with Leicester, the 25-year-old failed to live up to his true potential, scoring only 13 goals in 169 outings.

However, since signing for Everton, he looks like he’s finally discovering consistency and making himself a potent threat.

In eight outings for his new club, Gray has scored three goals and contributed a solitary assist.

At the age of 24, Maitland-Niles is also a player who is yet to really find himself. He wants to play in midfield but it’s at wing-back or full-back where he’s played more prominently for both club and country.

His attitude has been a continued problem for Mikel Arteta in north London but the £14.4m-rated gem might just need a new home.

Described as a “Rolls-Royce” by Martin Keown, the Gunners academy graduate caught the eye while on loan at West Brom last term.

A permanent move to Everton, therefore, could help him to build confidence and start producing game-changing performances on a more regular basis.

Merseyside has helped Gray realise his potential and it’s even helped Andros Townsend find the net on a regular basis.

Benitez is working miracles at Goodison right now; Maitland-Niles must join the party.

Livramento was Southampton’s shining light

Ralph Hasenhuttl’s Southampton were left disappointed as they lost 1-0 to Bruno Lage’s Wolves at St. Mary’s on Sunday.

The Saints are without a win in their six Premier League matches, sitting on four points after four draws and two defeats.

Raul Jimenez scored the only goal of the game as he raced onto a long ball from Jose Sa, outmuscled Jan Bednarek and then chopped inside of Mo Salisu and Bednarek again to slot past Alex McCarthy.

Despite the defeat, there were some positives to take from the match, with one player – in particular – catching the eye – Tino Livramento.

The summer signing from Chelsea was a shining light on a dark day for the Saints as he impressed at right-back with an excellent performance. He looked assured at both ends of the pitch and was ultimately let down by his teammates to end up on the losing side.

Defensively, he was almost a brick wall. Per SofaScore, he won 75% of his duels on the pitch, winning six of seven on the ground and losing his one aerial battle. He also made one tackle whilst no Wolves players were able to dribble past him throughout the match, showing that his positioning and tackling were perfect in that sense.

On the ball, Livramento also flourished. Per SofaScore, he had 75 touches and completed 86% of his passes from full-back. He also completed his only attempted dribble and provided two key passes for his teammates, whilst forcing a solid save out of Jose Sa with a low-driven effort in the second half. On another day, his creativity may have seen him end the game with an assist, but his teammates were unable to make the most out of either of the openings he created.

This shows that he has the quality to make an impact going forward, whilst also offering a balance by being able to keep it tight defensively and not gift any openings to the opposition.

Therefore, Hasenhuttl will surely be delighted by what he saw from the young defender and feeling grateful that his club were able to snap him up from Chelsea in the summer window.
