Fifth day drowned as series ends in rainy stalemate

The stadium at Pallekele could have scarcely had a worse debut. After five hours of incessant rain on the final day, play was finally called off without a ball being bowled – the second completely washed-out day during the match. On the three days that play was possible, only 103 overs were bowled, in which West Indies made 303/8 after having been put in to bat by Kumar Sangakkara. The entire series, which ends in a nil-all stalemate after rain in all three Tests, has been an incredibly disappointing one for fans, players and broadcasters alike. The tour hasn’t had a full day’s play since the first day of the first Test in Galle, but there have been several individual performances shining out through this depressing excuse for a Test series. Chris Gayle’s fantastic triple-ton helped West Indies dominate the first Test, while Kumar Sangakkara’s 150 in Colombo gave Sri Lanka control in the second. Darren Bravo announced himself with three mature half-centuries, which were not only impressive given their context, but aesthetically pleasing as well and Ajantha Mendis showed signs of a return to form through a succession of testing spells. The teams can’t claim to have gained much from the series and will hope that the late monsoon rains will abate in time for the one-dayers, the first of which is on Thursday.

Rangers: Worrying Morelos claim emerges

A big Rangers transfer claim has emerged on Alfredo Morelos and his future in Glasgow…

What’s the talk?

Transfer insider Pete O’Rourke has tipped the Colombian to be the subject of interest from clubs south of the border this summer. The attacker is set to miss the rest of the season through injury and O’Rourke believes that the Gers fans may not see him in action again.

He told GIVEMESPORT: “It could be a real possibility that we have seen the last of Morelos in a Rangers shirt. We’ve had speculation about his future every transfer window since he’s been at the club.

“He’s scored goals again in Europe, which is going to attract interest from teams in the Premier League and across Europe, and he will not be short of offers in the summer because of his goalscoring record.”

Van Bronckhorst will be terrified

This update will surely leave the Ibrox head coach scared, as losing Morelos would be a gigantic blow to his side ahead of next season.

The prolific goalscorer has been crucial to the Gers this term and his exit would take a huge attacking threat away from the team.

In the current Premiership campaign prior to his injury, he scored 11 goals and provided seven assists in 25 starts whilst averaging a sublime SofaScore rating of 7.32. He created two chances per game and nine ‘big chances’ for his team-mates as he showed that he can be a regular scorer and provider from the number nine position.

Earlier this year, Van Bronckhorst hailed the striker’s intelligence on the pitch as he said: “I think Morelos is doing really well in finding the moments to be available as a target man but also keep his threat in the 18-yard box, because that is where he is very dangerous. I think his knowledge of when to come or when to stay away is getting better and better.”

Morelos has also excelled in the Europa League, in which he scored four goals in eight starts to help the Gers on their way through the competition, with Van Bronckhorst’s men now set to face RB Leipzig in the first leg of the semi-finals this week.

His superb statistics domestically and in Europe illustrate how important he has been for Rangers and why losing him would leave a significant hole in the squad. There is no guarantee that Ross Wilson will be able to adequately replace him, and that is why the Dutch head coach will now be scrambling to convince the Colombian to stay at Ibrox.

Fast bowlers thrive after North century

The Australians continued their dominance of the warm-up match against the Board President’s XI in Chandigarh by producing another powerful performance on the second day

The Australians continued to dominate their tour game against the Board President’s XI. After the openers, Simon Katich and Shane Watson, scored centuries on day one, Marcus North, who would have been under some pressure after he scored just 36 runs in four Test innings against Pakistan, scored 124 unbeaten runs in less than three hours to take the Australians past 500. Ben Hilfenhaus and Peter George then ran through the Board President’s XI top order to reduce them to 53 for 5 at one stage. The only matter of concern for the Australians would be Nathan Hauritz, their lead spinner, who was played with ease by the BP XI lower order. Piyush Chawla scored an unbeaten and entertaining 64 off 73, and made sure his side wasn’t embarrassingly bowled out in one session of play on a slow pitch. There was a scare for the Australians early on as Pragyan Ojha removed both Ricky Ponting and Michael Clarke in his second over of the day. Ponting played back to one that pitched on an in-between length, and seemed to suggest the ball stayed a bit low too. Clarke jumped out of the crease, found he wasn’t quite to the pitch of the ball, and was given bat-pad. Suddenly the quiet BP XI fielders became chirpy. The small crowd started cheering the spinners. Out came an extra set of shin pads, helmet, and abdomen guard. But North and Tim Paine thwarted it all in a 167-run partnership that ended when North was called back to give the rest a chance to bat.North is a notoriously nervous starter, and he seemed to make a conscious effort not do anything silly in the first 30-40 balls he played. It showed in how he let Paine do the early scoring, and only opened up when Chawla presented him with a long hop. In the next few overs, he pulled and drove Umesh Yadav for fours, and lofted Ojha over midwicket for another.Another period of acceleration was to come. There was a point when North was on 26 and Paine on 17. By the time Paine reached 19, North had moved to 49. He played almost all the shots except the straight drive. He wasn’t made to. The bowlers allowed him to stay on the back foot and cut and pull. When he drove, he drove through extra cover. The sweep was used sparingly: in fact he swept only thrice in scoring his first 59 runs. When he grew in confidence, he started sweeping and lofting more, and raced to his century. Paine provided the ideal solid base at the other end. He seemed to be enjoying tiring the bowlers down. After North ended his innings, though, the BP XI got quick consolation wickets, the last five falling for 11. Michael Hussey’s comeback will make sure the tail is not that long in the Test matches. The collapse at the top of BP XI innings was more spectacular. In his second over, Hilfenhaus surprised Gautam Gambhir and Ajinkya Rahane with extra bounce. Gambhir went back looking at the fingers of his right hand, and Rahane looking at some spot on the pitch. Peter George, known to be in the Glenn McGrath mould, started accurately, and removed a left-hand batsman, Shikhar Dhawan, with the first ball he bowled to him. It was a McGrathesque dismissal: the ball pitched around off, and took the edge of the hanging bat. He got Saurabh Tiwary caught-behind too, but that was a loose shot away from the body. Between those two dismissals, Mitchell Johnson squared Cheteshwar Pujara up with what seemed to be late movement away.At 55 for 5, though, spin was introduced. Chawla found it easier to negotiate and added 37 with Wriddhiman Saha. He used his feet a lot, and got to the pitch of the ball with ease, lofting both the spinners for a six each, including Steven Smith in his first over. That Smith’s over was bowled three overs before stumps didn’t stop Chawla from going after him. Between them, the Australian spinners bowled 11 overs for 66 runs, and couldn’t manage a maiden. Hauritz got one inside edge from Chawla that went fine of the wicketkeeper, and that was that.A No. 7 attacking their spinners with ease was the only worrying sign for the Australians over the last two days.

West Ham make Svanberg contact

As per Corriere dello Sport (via Sport Witness), West Ham United, and by extension head of recruitment Rob Newman, have their sights on a new transfer target for David Moyes.

The Lowdown: Newman scrutinised…

Coming from Manchester City with a good reputation, even credited in playing a role over their signing of Aymeric Laporte (The Athletic), the West Ham chief has since faced criticism inside his new club.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/west-ham-newest-updates/” title=”West Ham newest updates!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

Following a questionable January window, doubts have come to light surrounding Newman and whether he is truly qualified enough to spearhead West Ham’s chase for new signings (Claret & Hugh).

In what could be a crucial summer window for the ex-Sky Blues head scout, news has now emerged on a first pre-summer move as he allegedly eyes Svanberg from Bologna.

The Latest: Newman opens pre-summer West Ham dialogue…

According to CDS (via SW), West Ham and Newman have opened pre-summer dialogue to sign the box-to-box Serie A ace – making their first move in the form of an enquiry.

This comes as Svanberg’s club could now say goodbye to their 23-year-old sensation given Bologna need to raise funds for their own summer transfer activity.

However, West Ham may need to invest significantly, with Corriere also claiming the Italian minnows will demand a ‘high’ price.

The Verdict: Take it further?

As Newman looks to redeem his regrettable transfer window, he could do worse than signing Svanberg, who has been described by an iNews source as ‘probably one of the top four’ No 8’s in Europe.

Amassing 18 international caps for Sweden already at such a young age, Svanberg’s potential seems limitless, leaving no wonder West Ham are thinking about backing Moyes with his capture.

Much could depend on his eventual price tag, though, and how much he could cost to bring to east London.

West Ham fans buzzing over Carvalho update

Flocking to Twitter, many West Ham United fans have been left pleading for the signing of Fulham forward Fabio Carvalho after an update from reliable in-the-know insider ExWHUemployee.

Hammers boss David Moyes is thought to be keen on the 19-year-old Championship starlet alongside a host of other Premier League clubs, with Southampton, Tottenham and Liverpool also said to be watching on (TEAMtalk).

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/west-ham-latest-news-copy/” title=”West Ham latest news!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

Fulham hold fears that he has already agreed to move away from Craven Cottage, with the talented teenager still yet to pen a contract extension in west London (TEAMtalk).

As things stand, the winger can leave as a free agent in the summer, and Ex believes that West Ham could well be in contention.

According to the insider, via his West Ham Way website, Carvalho is personally seen by Moyes as an alternative to long-time target Jesse Lingard, whose apparent recent comments about his future caused some consternation among the east London fan base.

While a move is more likely in the summer when the 19-year-old is a free agent, ExWHUemployee refuses to rule out the possibility of a late January swoop, believing that the story ‘could change’.

West Ham fans plead for Carvalho…

Taking to Twitter, many West Ham fans have pleaded with the club to sign the talented teenager after this insider claim, and it’s not hard to see why.

Dubbed a ‘very exciting’ player by one-time Premier League Golden Boot winner Kevin Phillips, Carvalho’s eight goals and two assists in 17 Championship appearances for Fulham highlight his sky-high potential. For a cheaper fee or on a Bosman in the summer, this potential move is certainly enough to excite the Irons faithful.

'I wouldn't drop Yuvraj from the XV' – Kiran More

Kiran More, India’s former chief selector, has criticised the axing of Yuvraj Singh from the Asia Cup squad

Siddhartha Talya07-Jun-2010

Yuvraj Singh and Yusuf Pathan being left out of the Asia Cup is a mistake, says Kiran More•AFP

Kiran More, India’s former chief selector, has criticised the axing of Yuvraj Singh from the Asia Cup squad. More said it was too close to the 2011 World Cup to drop a player of Yuvraj’s calibre. He also questioned the decision to leave out India’s more experienced pace options, the likes of Sreesanth, RP Singh, Munaf Patel and Ishant Sharma.”You can always send a message to Yuvraj,” More told Cricinfo. ” ‘Sit on the bench. You’ll be in the reserves, we are playing somebody else but be part of the team, get your fitness right, get your act right and get disciplined also.’ That would give him more encouragement. But only one player has been pointed out, and they’ve dropped him from the Asia Cup.”Yuvraj has averaged 24.7 in his last 11 ODIs, and scored a best of 43 in 14 games in the IPL this year. His fitness in the recent past has come in for criticism and he was also issued a show-cause notice by the BCCI for an alleged pub brawl in St Lucia following India’s exit from the World Twenty20.”They are making a mistake,” More said. “If the World Cup is so close by, I’ll not fiddle around with the team. I will not drop Yuvraj Singh from the XV.”More said India needed to identify a pool of 20-22 players and not look beyond them for the World Cup. However, he was surprised that none of Sreesanth, Munaf, Ishant or RP was picked for the World Twenty20, the tri-series in Zimbabwe or the ongoing A tour of England. He said the decision to ignore an experienced set of seamers hurt the possibility of their return to the national side and remain in contention for the World Cup.”I’m very surprised that RP, Ishant Sharma, Irfan Pathan and Sreesanth have not been picked. They were part of the team one and a half months back, and now they are not among the next 60 also,” More said. “They didn’t go to Zimbabwe, they didn’t go the A tour of England. Suddenly your main players are missing from the next 60, how are they going to make a comeback?”The guys who have gone to England for the A tour, they are going to do well. The matches there will not be very competitive, and they are going to come back and be in the reckoning for a place in the Indian team. Not Ishant, RP, Irfan or Sreesanth.”I don’t know if [Ashok] Dinda or [Umesh] Yadav are going to play the World Cup. They could have gone to England as part of the A team and gained some good experience for two-and-a-half-months there. It’s too early for these guys to get into the 2011 World Cup.”More also felt Yusuf Pathan had not been given a fair run before being dropped. Yusuf had a poor World Twenty20, averaging just 10.50, and has scored just two half-centuries in his 37-match ODI career. “I’m not very happy with Yusuf Pathan’s place in the batting order,” he said. “He’s been batting at No.7 all the time. You are always batting in a difficult situation at that position, and you have to score quick runs. He got 44 in his last innings; it’s not a fair call on him also.”Among the newer players in the squad, More singled out the offspinner R Ashwin as a promising prospect and said he should have played more matches on the tour of Zimbabwe. “We need a surprise bowler for the World Cup, and our concern is in the bowling department,” More said. “Ashwin has done well domestically, and is a different bowler. He’s got a lot of variety and a good height to bowl offspin. He should have been a certainty in the playing XI in Zimbabwe. I hope he gets more opportunities.”

Adams gives Hampshire hope

Jimmy Adams’ tentative 60 edged Hampshire into a narrow 148-run lead at the Rose Bowl as they bid to avoid a sixth straight domestic defeat of the season

06-May-2010
ScorecardJimmy Adams’ tentative 60 edged Hampshire into a narrow 148-run lead at the Rose Bowl as they bid to avoid a sixth straight domestic defeat of the season. Adams was the only Hampshire batsmen to make a significant impact on the scorecard as Samit Patel’s two wickets left Nottinghamshire in a strong position to avoid defeat and maintain their strong start to the County Championship Division One season.Nottinghamshire allrounder Steven Mullaney had earlier taken the away side past Hampshire’s first innings total with a sturdy unbeaten 100, ably supported by Paul Franks’ 48 from 90 deliveries. Mullaney frustrated the home attack, taking the game to Hampshire and striking 12 boundaries during his century.Mullaney and tailender Franks put on 79 for the eighth wicket before the latter was trapped lbw by Dominic Cork with the Hampshire veteran then cleaning up the tail with the wickets of Darren Pattinson and Charlie Shreck to dismiss them for 329 and claim figures of 4 for 34.Hampshire began positively with in-form Michael Carberry looking to add to his first innings haul of 132 – and he and Adams looked in good shape building an encouraging first-wicket stand. However the England batsman nicked a swinging delivery from Pattinson to wicketkeeper Chris Read with Hampshire just five runs ahead – and you could almost feel the nerves enveloping around the Rose Bowl.Chris Benham did little to quell those fears with an underwhelming 18 from 44 balls, failing to find the boundary rope before he was removed lbw by Samit Patel, unable to judge a well-pitched delivery from the spinner. At the other end Adams kept his head with some fine drives and intelligent pinch-hitting to keep the score ticking over.He lost another partner when South African Neil McKenzie again failed to deliver on his return to England as he edged a quick Shreck delivery to Read for another disappointing score of just 12. Adams’ resolve lasted until the 49th over when he popped one up to BilalShafayat in the field from Patel and the collapse continued with Nottinghamshire eyeing a total below 200 to win.Thankfully for the hosts the experienced head of Nic Pothas (29 not out) and teenager James Vince (29 not out) glued together a 50-run partnership inside 30 gruelling overs at the end of the day’s play just when it was needed.
