Liverpool fans furious after Melissa Reddy’s contract update

In what may go down as one of the biggest twists of the summer transfer window, RB Leipzig striker Timo Werner is on the verge of joining Chelsea, not Liverpool.

The Germany international waxed lyrical about Jurgen Klopp and the Reds earlier this year, hailing the former as the “best coach in the world”, and that his style “might be a good fit” at Anfield.

But now, the Reds have pulled out of the race to sign him, with their Premier League rivals Chelsea reportedly agreeing a deal to lure him to Stamford Bridge.

And along with the news that Liverpool won’t be making Werner their newest signing, The Independent’s Melissa Reddy has revealed that the Merseyside club’s “priority” has been to “lock down Virgil van Dijk and Alisson for the long-term, while continuing to reward players that have delivered Champions League success and are close to ending a 30-year wait for the league title”.

After hearing Reddy’s update on why they didn’t move for Werner, Liverpool fans flooded to Twitter to voice their reactions.

A couple of Liverpool supporters couldn’t quite believe that the Reds look like they’re heading for a second consecutive summer without spending – last year only saw them bring in Sepp van den Berg for some money, with both Adrian and Andy Lonergan arriving on free transfers.

Another couple of fans felt that the whole idea that the club snubbed the chance to sign Werner in order to renew contracts, seemed to be a way of “spinning” the story, and didn’t seem to buy it.

Whilst it is true to point out the Reds have achieved considerable success over the past couple of seasons, simply avoiding refreshing the squad due to wanting to “reward” players who are already there, is just a recipe for stagnation.

Things are going great for Liverpool, with the Premier League title likely to be on its way very soon, but without new signings, the Reds risk standing still and just letting their rivals play catch-up.

It’s no surprise to see fans of the Merseyside club so frustrated.

Tottenham fans react to Hojbjerg latest

It’s no secret that Tottenham are interested in Southampton midfielder Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg after reports this week stated that the London club are in for the Dane.

With the midfielder entering the final year of his contract, one would imagine that he’d be available for a cut-price fee, but unfortunately for Spurs, it seems as though that’s not the case.

Ralph Hasenhuttl made it abundantly clear with his comments earlier this week that the Saints wouldn’t be letting the former Bayern Munich man go for cheap, and The Times have stated that the south-coast outfit value the midfielder at £35m.

This news has Tottenham fans concerned, partially down to the reputation Daniel Levy has garnered for himself when it comes to being a tough negotiator and refusing to pay over the odds for a player.

The pessimists amongst the fanbase are already blaming Levy for the deal falling through, despite no reports backing up those claims.

You can’t help but feel Levy is being a little hard done by here, fans are already angry with him for not completing a deal that may still yet be done, and even if he does refuse to pay, is that necessarily a bad thing?

Hojbjerg is a good player, but £35m for a player in the final year of their contract is preposterous, especially when they’re not from a top side.

Other’s simply weren’t happy with the valuation, stating that Hojbjerg isn’t worth the £35m that Tottenham are being quoted.

One fan claimed that better players were available at that price point, and with Liverpool being reportedly being asked for just £1m more for Thiago Alcantara, who is a regular for one of Europe’s top sides, you have to say that these fans may have a point.

Man Utd fans discuss interest in Atletico’s Thomas Partey

After signing Bruno Fernandes and Odion Ighalo in the January transfer window, Manchester United looked a completely new team before the footballing world was postponed.

The Red Devils remained undefeated with their two new arrivals in the ranks, and with talks of a potential big-money summer move for Borussia Dortmund sensation Jadon Sancho, things are beginning to look rosy again at Old Trafford.

And now, Spanish publication Mundo Deportivo have claimed Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s have reignited their interest in Atletico Madrid enforcer Thomas Partey but that they will face competition for his signature from Italian sides like AS Roma and Inter.

After hearing about the update on their pursuit of Partey, United fans took to Twitter to voice their thoughts on the situation.

A couple of United fans felt that Partey could be the missing piece in both their midfield and squad, suggesting that he could offer a different dimension to the line-up.

With Paul Pogba’s future still up in the air, a move for a central midfielder certainly makes a whole lot of sense for United.

Partey has shown that he can be a very impressive anchor man for Atletico, but with the guile and creativity to be a force on the ball too. As per Whoscored, he averages 2.1 tackles, 1.4 interceptions, 1.9 dribbles and 0.7 key passes per game in La Liga this season.

If United can fend off interest from Partey’s other suitors, then the £36m-rated star could be a shrewd signing.

Arsenal fans respond to valuation of squad as 12th highest globally

Although results so far in the current campaign might suggest otherwise, Arsenal’s squad has been valued as the 12th highest globally by Transfermarkt, and these Gunners’ fans have been quick to vent their feelings given the current predicament at the club.

The north London side’s inconsistent start to the 2019/20 season has been compounded by Unai Emery’s dilemma in dealing with Granit Xhaka’s response to being substituted and booed against Crystal Palace.

Meanwhile, pressure is seemingly mounting on the Spaniard with the Daily Mirror reporting he has just one month left to save his job.

Transfermarkt cite Nicolas Pepe (£67.5m), Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang (£63m) and Alexandre Lacazette (£63m) as the club’s three most valuable assets in their squad’s value, but the trio will have to start delivering a series of impressive performances to ease the impending pressure on Emery if the former PSG boss is to keep his job at The Emirates.

Following a tweet from Arsenal Fan TV, these are some of the best reactions to Arsenal’s reported squad value.

Barcelona fans react to the latest Spanish Super Cup update

And now it’s already official – the latest iteration of the Spanish Super Cup is not going to take place in Spain but rather in Saudi Arabia, as the RFEF have now already confirmed.

Interestingly enough, we already have the semi-finalists for the event: Barcelona will face Atletico Madrid while Real Madrid will lock horns with Valencia.

But even though those match-ups look really interesting and are bound to make for exciting games, football was not really at the centre of many of Barcelona fans’ attention.

They were more concerned about the venue itself and it seems that many of the Cules were definitely not happy with the Super Cup taking place in Saudi Arabia instead of Spain.

Some of them seem to think this is a loss for football and that it’s all about the money nowadays.

Crystal Palace fans react as Wilfried Zaha is linked with £70m Old Trafford return

Crystal Palace fans have taken to Twitter to react after it was reported that Manchester United are lining up a £70m reunion with Wilfried Zaha.

The report states that the Red Devils – who sold Zaha for just £3m back in January 2015 – believe the Ivory Coast international is a wiser player than he previously was, and feel that he can be a success at Old Trafford this time around – as a result, they are prepared to pay the high fee Palace want.

Zaha – who turned 27 yesterday – has endured a tough campaign so far, failing to find the back of the net in 12 Premier League appearances following a failed transfer request back in the summer – he was said to be ‘devastated’ after the Eagles blocked his move.

In total, the Ivorian has just one assist to show for his efforts this season.

One Palace supporter said “please” after hearing about the transfer news, whereas another fan said that there is “no chance” of anyone paying £70m for the former Cardiff player.

Let’s take a look at some more of the Twitter reaction…

Leeds’ decision to move Stuart Dallas into midfield not paying off

This article is part of Football FanCast’s The Chalkboard series, which provides a tactical insight into teams, players, managers, potential signings and more…

He might come across as a Swiss Army Knife, but it looks like he might be missing a couple of tools.

Given the recent injuries to Liam Cooper and Jamie Shackleton, there has had to be a couple of tweaks to the team setup. As a result of these, Stuart Dallas has been moved out of his right-back position that he started off the season in and been shifted into a central midfield role instead.

Dallas comes across as a great utility player, someone who can fit into a number of different positions given the amount he’s had to play throughout his career. But as a central midfielder, he’s just not cutting the mustard.

On the chalkboard

Dallas has always been more effective out wide, whether that be as a winger or a full-back. In fact, if you look at where his goals involvements have come when he’s been playing for Leeds, all of his assists have come when he was playing out on the left-wing, and all of his goals have come from the flanks.

Whilst he may be cut out to fill in multiple positions on the pitch, he just isn’t creative enough when it comes to playing central midfield, and that is holding himself and Leeds back.

He averages a 74.3% pass completion rate through his career, when you compare that to the other midfielders like Adam Forshaw and Mateusz Klich, both of them are pushing north of 80%.

For him to play in the middle, the £1.8m-rated utility man needs to be far more careful in possession.

The injuries to Cooper and Shackleton should have been a chance for Marcelo Bielsa to try out some new players in their respective roles.

However, he should have gone for players who are more natural in those spots, like bringing young Mateusz Bogusz or Robbie Gotts into midfield, rather than shoe-horning someone who just isn’t effective there.

Hopefully this Dallas experiment won’t be carrying on much longer, or it could end up with Leeds dropping more than the five points they have already from Millwall and Preston.

Liverpool shown exactly why Roberto Firmino must never be dropped

[ad_pod ]

This article is part of Football FanCast’s Off the Bench series, which places in-game managerial decisions and squad selections under FFC’s microscope.

After surprisingly falling behind to a Jetro Willems strike, Liverpool battled back to secure a 3-1 victory over Newcastle and maintain their perfect record in the Premier League.

Snapshot

In the Reds’ first game after the international break, Jurgen Klopp sprung a surprise in his team selection by opting to start Divock Origi ahead of Roberto Firmino.

The German’s thinking may have revolved around him having one eye on the Champions League clash against Napoli on Tuesday night, but the decision back-fired early on. Steve Bruce’s side caught the Reds off guard in the opening few minutes, and duly took the lead through a fine Willems goal.

Sadio Mane then equalised for the home side with an impressive effort of his own, before the true turning point of the game occured. Origi was forced off with just ten minutes remaining in the first-half, and Firmino’s introduction simply turned the game on its head.

Off the bench

The Brazilian is a real live-wire with his movement off the ball and constant pressing of the opposition. His style of play makes him every manager’s dream. And on Saturday, Firmino proved exactly why Klopp simply cannot afford to just leave him on the bench – no matter the policy on rotation.

The Liverpool boss’ initial game-plan saw Origi play from the left, and Mane occupy the middle. Firmino’s introduction however saw normal service resume, and the 27-year-old under-lined why he is such an important cog in the Reds’ attacking machine.

In just over an hour of play, the Brazil international registered four key passes – one of which forced a mistake for Mane’s second goal, and another oozed quality and panache to set up Mohamed Salah’s strike. His tricks and flicks all seemed to come off, and he helped stitch the play together up front. There were a lot more patterns to the Reds’ play, and there seemed to be more cohesion than when Origi was in the side.

If there is one lesson Klopp must take away from the clash at Anfield, it is that Firmino is simply irreplaceable.
