Vieira could unearth Palace gem in Robert Street

It’s an exciting time to be a Crystal Palace fan. The club’s ambition off the pitch is being matched by some encouraging results and performances on the field of play.

Last week was as about as good as Eagles supporters have had it for many years. The official opening of their new Category 1 Academy and state-of-the-art facilities was followed up by a victory over reigning Premier League champions Manchester City in their own backyard.

At the unveiling of the new youth facilities, chairman Steve Parish outlined the transformative effect that he hopes the upgraded setup will have on the south London club.

He said: “The new Academy will have a transformative effect on the future of the football club and the local community, not only enabling us to attract and retain the best players in one of England’s richest footballing areas but also to help scores of young people and local schools enjoy the facilities.”

With the likes of Wilfried Zaha, Aaron Wan-Bissaka and Tyrick Mitchell paving the way for Palace’s future stars, it appears as though the coming years are set to mark a new chapter in the Eagles’ history.

One player who become a household name in years to come is striker Robert Street. The 20-year-old has risen through the ranks at his boyhood club and is currently enjoying a stellar campaign for the under-23s.

In 12 appearances for Shaun Derry’s charges, Street has bagged an impressive seven goals and provided one assist, with his eye-catching displays earning him a place on the bench for two Premier League encounters.

Palace’s official website describes the youngster as a “talented” forward, and he’s certainly someone who should generate plenty of excitement among the fans.

“A combative attacker in the Palace ranks, Street followed the lead of fellow young hotshot and former Palace forward James Daly by progressing through the Under-18s to sample Development football,” Street’s description reads.

“The talented frontman was rewarded for his efforts with a professional contract in summer 2020 and followed this with a loan move to Torquay United in January 2021.

“After his return to the Under-23s side, he scored a crucial goal in the play-off victory over Wolverhampton Wanderers to send Palace within touching distance of promotion.”

Only time will tell if Street has the quality and desire to make the step up to Vieira’s first team squad on a regular basis, but the signs are encouraging for Palace’s latest attacking talent.

Leeds surely worried by Bamford latest

The Athletic’s Phil Hay has confirmed that Patrick Bamford will once again be missing for Leeds United as they take on Leicester City this afternoon, while the striker himself has delivered the latest update on where things currently stand with his injury.

What’s the story?

Writing on Twitter on Friday, Hay said: “Bielsa’s pre-Leicester press conference this morning – Bamford, Ayling and Koch are all still unavailable for Sunday. Sounds like everyone else is ready.”

Earlier this week, Bamford himself admitted that his recover from injury is dragging out longer than he initially expected. He said: “It’s okay. It’s a little bit slow. It is [getting better], day by day. It’s just taking a little bit longer than I first thought.

“I think the thing that has got under my skin a little bit this time is that I anticipated I would be back in four weeks and the fact that it has taken longer than that is a little bit hard to get my head around. But now I am seeing improvements.”Fans will be worriedGiven that Bamford was Leeds’ top scorer last season with 17, it’s no surprise that the Whites have really struggled for goals to start this Premier League campaign – they’ve managed just ten in their opening ten games.Former Leeds striker Noel Whelan recently voiced his concern about the kind of impact that not having Bamford in this side would have.He said: “It was one of my biggest fears. How can we live life without Patrick playing from when he’s the one player that really strings everything together up front?”He runs in behind, he runs the channels, takes centre-halves out of positions. His energy, his work right across the backline in the opposition’s defence. There’s not a player like him at the club. That was my worry, if anything did happen, which it has done now. We have seen that difficult side of the game going forward.”The longer that Bamford remains out, the more difficult it becomes to see how the Whites genuinely address their goalscoring issues up front. While Rodrigo may have netted against Norwich last week, the Spaniard hasn’t exactly shown himself to be a prolific forward just yet, and fans will surely be concerned as to when their star centre-forward will come back.Meanwhile, Phil Hay has dropped an exciting 49ers claim…

Hernanes

Crystal Palace: Fans love Eberechi Eze update

Crystal Palace star Eberechi Eze took to Twitter on Tuesday evening to provide an update on his comeback from an Achilles injury.

And, as to be expected, a number of Eagles supporters have been quick to react to the footage on social media.

The 23-year-old suffered a freak injury in training towards the end of the previous campaign, which, at first, some thought would keep him out until the New Year.

However, he appears to be making good progress, with reports in August believing the attacking midfielder was way ahead of schedule in regards to his rehabilitation.

Eze posted a nine-second video on Twitter on Tuesday of himself taking part in a short but sharp running drill which ended with a bit of ball work.

Palace fans react

Crystal Palace retweeted Eze’s clip, which led to a number of Eagles fans giving their positive thoughts. This is what some had to say, with many struggling to hold back their excitement.

“He’s gonna be back before Xmas isn’t he? Looking forward to an Edouard, Zaha, Eze, Olise front four before the end of the year. Oh my goodness!!”

Taylor and Ryder carry resurgent New Zealand

Ross Taylor battled his way to a third Test century and riding shotgun was Jesse Ryder, with his second century in as many games, as New Zealand rounded off what had started as a disastrous day to end in a comfortable position

How they were out
Ton-up twins: Ross Taylor and Jesse Ryder hit centuries in a record fourth-wicket stand•Getty Images

Ross Taylor wasn’t at his fluent best at McLean Park but, on a day when almost everything went his way, he didn’t need to be. He swished, flashed and edged but luck was on his side and he was dropped twice. He eventually battled his way to a third Test century to give New Zealand some much-needed oomph. Riding shotgun at first before stepping into the driver’s seat was Jesse Ryder, with his second century of the series, and New Zealand finished what had started as a disastrous day in a dominant position. There were significant moments right from the start of this Test. For starters, Virender Sehwag walked out to toss instead of MS Dhoni, who was ruled out with a sore back. Then Daniel Vettori won the toss and chose to bat on a pitch that was a source of discussion because of a supposed fungal infection on the surface, and one he described as not having a consistent grass cover. That was followed by an almost typical New Zealand start with three wickets falling for just 23.At that stage it appeared Vettori’s call for his batsmen to play out at least 120 overs had fallen on deaf ears, but a record fourth-wicket partnership for New Zealand that followed vindicated his decision to bat. Taylor and Ryder put on an excellent rearguard effort and reached significant centuries.Perhaps sensing this was the chance to get himself into form after an indifferent ODI series and two scratchy innings in Hamilton, Taylor played an innings filled with fiery and chancy shots. He had a slice of fortune on 4 when Yuvraj Singh was unable to latch on to a thick outside edge at third slip. Taylor continued to attack, edging three of four boundaries in one Munaf Patel over, and initially had the bowlers hoping that he would play one shot too many.Taylor and Ryder carried on tenaciously, with the third-man area proving most lucrative for Taylor in particular, who nicked and slashed through the slips and gully. All of the four primary bowlers were unlucky throughout, with many edges falling short of fielders or going over their heads. When Rahul Dravid failed to hold a tough catch at slip with Taylor on 92, India’s hopes of preventing Taylor’s innings from swelling to three figures were dashed.Smart StatsThe 271-run stand between Jesse Ryder and Ross Taylor is New Zealand’s highest in Tests for the fourth wicket. It’s also the second-highest by any team against India. It’s only the fourth instance – and the highest – of a team adding more than 200 for fourth wicket after being three down for less than 25. The last time it had been achieved was 26 years back, also against India, when Larry Gomes and Clive Lloyd added 237 after West Indies were 1 for 3 at Port of Spain.Of the 151 runs Taylor scored, 54 came behind point, including 24 in the third-man region. In contrast, only four of Ryder’s runs were scored through third man.Taylor was most severe on Munaf Patel and Ishant Sharma, scoring 66 from 67 balls he faced from him. Against Zaheer Khan, he scored 37 from 58. Ryder was more prolific against Zaheer, scoring 36 from 40. Against Ishant and Munaf he managed 44 from 77.Taylor’s hundred broke a lean spell that had lasted 14 innings – in his last eight Tests he had only 322 runs at an average of 23. This is his third Test hundred, and his first against India – his previous two had both come against England. The milestone came on the stroke of tea with another squirt through gully and Taylor soaked up the applause from his home crowd. The angst gone, Taylor laced two more boundaries in the over before tea and on resumption he hit a six off Harbhajan. In the last 90 minutes of the day Taylor was placing the ball at will, as a fierce cut, a straight punch over Munaf and a slash to third man in one over exemplified. But his decision to slog one from outside off stump got him out just short of his Test best. India had a running, tumbling Yuvraj at deep square leg to thank for the breakthrough.Unlike Taylor, Ryder combined a craftsman’s patience with an artist’s flair. He has been the scourge of India’s bowlers and once again he tormented them with an innings that blended straight-bat defiance with dabs of panache. Having partnered Vettori to a century on day one of the series opener, Ryder understood his role and had no qualms about playing second fiddle as long as Taylor was around.Ryder’s approach was simple: if the ball was on the stumps, he would defend, and if it was wide enough, he would put it away. He bided his time against the seamers and blossomed against spin after edging one off Harbhajan between slip and the wicketkeeper, Dinesh Karthik. But Ryder is someone who tempers the old game with new age flair and he found time to slog Virender Sehwag for four and six.Once he reached his hundred, and more so after Taylor departed, Ryder opted for caution over charisma. The bat came down straight, the head remained still and the eyes were steely. Ryder had the chance to bat longer with batsmen still to follow. With James Franklin, who was lucky that Billy Doctrove didn’t spot an edge and Yuvraj spilled a sitter at slip, Ryder added a further 57 to the total. There has been considerable discussion about the shortcomings of this New Zealand side in the first few months of 2009. A lot of it has centred around the inexperienced batting line-up, of which Taylor is the most accomplished and qualified. His side needed a hundred from him and Taylor stepped up when New Zealand were 23 for 3. Ryder, in his eighth Test, played a mature innings and again proved just why he has been talked of as a special talent since his formative years.

Wolves FIFA 22 ratings leaked

Many Wolves fans have been left fuming as some ratings for their players in the video game FIFA 22 have been ‘leaked’.

The makers of FIFA 22 have been ‘leaking’ ratings of some players ahead of the game’s launch, with Lionel Messi being the highest-rated player at 93.

Talking Wolves have now shared some ‘leaked’ ratings for some Molineux players, with the highest rating being given to Raul Jimenez at 83.

Several Wolves fans are particularly angry at the ratings rumoured to be given to Ruben Neves (82), Pedro Neto (78) and Adama Traore (78), as they feel those figures are not a true reflection on the players’ ability.

Nonetheless, it will no doubt be interesting to see how their ratings compare to other players in the Premier League once the full game is released.

Wolves fans on FIFA 22 ratings

These supporters of the Molineux club fumed as the rumoured ratings were shared on Twitter, with one even going as far as to claim that Traore’s rating is ‘insane’:

Wolves: Fans react to Silva’s U23 inclusion

Fabio Silva lined-up for Wolverhampton Wanderers’ Under-23s in Monday’s Premier League 2 clash with Sunderland.

The striker got on the scoresheet for James Collins’ side, but a Bill Harris hat-trick for the visitors saw them fall to defeat.

Limited involvement for Silva under Lage

Silva, a £35.6million addition in 2020, was an unused substitute in the senior team’s 1-0 win over Southampton at the weekend.

He’s played only 18 minutes of Premier League football since Bruno Lage took over from Nuno Espirito Santo.

The signing of Hwang Hee-chan from RB Leipzig appears to have pushed him further down the pecking order.

Both of Silva’s starts under the new boss have come in the Carabao Cup.

He able to notch two assists in the 4-0 rout of Championship strugglers Nottingham Forest last month.

It remains to be seen whether Wolves will look to loan out Silva for more regular game time when the January transfer window rolls around.

Fan feed Talking Wolves relayed the team news, and here’s what supporters made of it.

What did Wolves fans think of Silva’s Under-23 runout?

“Best place for him. Nowhere near a Premier League player. Waste of big money.”

“He’ll be back playing in the Portuguese league soon. He’s just not good enough, not his fault we spent way too much on him”

Saints fans rage at Obafemi news

Southampton fans are far from happy with the news that Michael Obafemi was sold to Swansea City in a last-gasp deal on Transfer Deadline Day.

The Saints ended up being busy during the summer transfer window, bringing in no less than six fresh faces (Transfermarkt). Of that group, two were strikers – Adam Armstrong is Danny Ings’ replacement, while Armando Broja was also brought in to provide extra strength in depth.

With two brought in and one going out, it seems there may have been one centre-forward too many on the books. As such, Obafemi has been sold to the Swans (southamptonfc.com) for a fee of £1.5m to £2m. This news has not pleased the Saints supporters, however – they seem to have wanted the Ireland international to remain at St. Mary’s Stadium.

The news was confirmed on Southampton’s official Twitter account late on Tuesday evening, and it attracted plenty of news from the supporters. They took to the social media platform to share their thoughts, with some clearly ‘gutted’ as one fan put it.

Let’s see what the fans had to say about the Obafemi news

“Don’t get this…we held on to hesketh until he is 24, slatterly, Sims etc to prove themselves but don’t give the same opportunity to a lad who clearly has the potential at 21. He has pace, power and an eye for goal as he showed in the Chelsea game, a loan as a better move.”

Liverpool eye up Marcelo Brozovic signing

Liverpool are reportedly interested in completing a deadline day move for Inter Milan and Croatia midfielder Marcelo Brozovic.

The Lowdown: Wijnaldum replacement needed?

Gini Wijnaldum joined Paris Saint-Germain earlier on in the summer, but the Reds are yet to replace the Dutchman in the middle of the park.

Granted, Harvey Elliott has come in and shone, while Naby Keita and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain are back fit, but a new signing wouldn’t go amiss.

[freshpress-quiz id=“359326”]

The Latest: Liverpool want Brozovic

According to Inter Live [via Sport Witness], Liverpool are eyeing up a last-minute move for Brozovic, who is valued at £36m by Transfermarkt.

The Croatia international played in the 2018 World Cup final defeat to France and has made 244 appearances for Inter, winning the Serie A title last season.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/latest-liverpool-transfer-news-2/” title=”Latest Liverpool transfer news!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=“none”]

The Verdict: Hard to see happening

In truth, it is hard to see Brozovic making the move to Anfield, considering that he turns 29 later this year and therefore doesn’t represent a long-term signing.

Liverpool look well-stocked in midfield despite Wijnaldum’s exit – Elliott’s emergence has helped hugely in that respect – and they should be looking to add another attacker instead.

Last Saturday’s 1-1 draw at home to Chelsea highlighted the need for a greater goal threat in the final third from the substitutes’ bench as Jurgen Klopp’s men ran out of ideas against 10 men.

In other news, some Liverpool fans are desperate for the Reds to sign one player. Find out who it is here.
